[Q] Help!! My phone bricked itself!! - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Somehow my phone has bricked itself. It's a Droid Incredible 2 that I purchased off an ebay power seller a few months ago. I've had no problems with it. I got myself a wireless charger for Christmas. Not sure if that is relevant or not, but wanted to give all the facts.
Last night I put the phone on the wireless charger when I went to bed like I have since Christmas. This was about 2200ish. Around 0300ish I hear beeping sounds from the charger and I hear a loud ticking sound from that vicinity as well. No idea if the ticking sound was coming from the charger. I was dead asleep and thought I might be dreaming it. Then it stopped. I went back to sleep and thought nothing of it until this morning when I picked up my phone and it was dead.
By dead I mean completely dead. Press the power button and nothing happens. Plug a charger into it and the charging light blinks once every 4-5 seconds. The phone still will not power on. Battery pull had no effect. Tried to get into recovery by holding the volume button and power button down. Nothing at all.
Any ideas before I take it down to the VZW store this evening? My phone is rooted so I may have voided my warranty and I have no way to un-root it. It seems to be a hardware issue, not a software one though so it shouldn't matter.

Sounds more like your charger fried your battery, and that's if you are lucky. The other possibility is that your charging port is fried as well, not as likely though since you said it still blinks when you plug it in. My personal opinion would be to get a new battery and charge it with your normal charger, if that works then toss the wireless one, it's probably bad news.
Unfortunately if you had purchased the phone from verizon they would have just given you a new battery free, they usually do that no questions asked one time for each customer, at least from all my encounters that's how it's been.

before you do that you need to plug your phone in for a few hours so it can get a good charge. It sounds like you wireless charger wasn't working and your phone is dead. Then pull your battery and try to turn your phone on.

good call, didn't even think about that, if it doesn't work after trying to charge it with the normal charger then most likely the wireless charger fried the battery and you it just needs to be replaced.

Sadly I don't have another battery to test with. I'm sure they have one at the VZW store I can test with (I hope). It doesn't power on even plugged into the wall though. Shouldn't it power on plugged into the wall whether there's a battery in it or not?
I'm not sure how it could have fried the charging port if it was charging wirelessly. Unless you're talking about the charging connectors inside the phone. That would be bad news altogether. But if that happened, the phone wouldn't go from fully charged to 0% in just 3-4 hours. So that would indicate the entire phone is fried which would make me extremely unhappy.

It won't charge when plugged into the charger. The charging light doesn't come on at all.

I would go to a verizon store and check on testing out another battery then. Hopefully that wireless charger didn't fry anything internally. Also, if your battery is completely dead then the phone won't bootup even if plugged in, it's like having a dead battery in your car, if you have low battery your car will start up but if you have a dead battery it won't because it needs at least a little juice to fire up the alternator. Hope that analogy made sense lol.

It did. I just figured with no battery it would bypass the battery and run just on AC power. I'm using my DInc at the moment so I still have a phone. The battery for the DInc has the terminals on the other side and I'm guessing it's not as simple as just turning the battery over. Last thing I want is to make things worse.

Nope, don't even attempt that, you might cause more problems than you already have. Bottomline though, I'd just take it in to a verizon and see how they can help you. They are usually really cool about giving a hand at most stores.

I'm desperate at this point and that still struck me as a bad idea.
I can't find any other instances on Google where using a wireless charger fried a phone.

Went to the VZW store. They said my phone had no warranty on it, but since I purchased insurance they'd overnight me a replacement. They said the battery is good. The phone itself is dead apparently. With the holiday and me getting there after 1700, I'm guessing I won't get it until Tuesday. I'm now worried about how to wipe my personal data from the phone before sending it in.

Smash the phone.. they wouldn't find out.. its an insurance replacement already and that's 99% of the reason insurance exists.. for water/smash/loss to the phone.

agreed. Assurion actually performs a master reset on devices before booting (if phone actually boots). If not they will use your phone as a donor phone. I use assurion as the rooters get out of jail card. They just dont give a damn.
In fact I have "lost" many phones just to have parts lol. Cheaper and faster shipping than eBay.

After sleeping on it, I remembered that I've got a screen lock on there so my data is all safe. The phone is programmed to nuke itself if someone enters the wrong code too many times. I'm not too worried about it now.

Not trying to sound like a ****, but it's people like you who cheat the system for their own benefits. Inturn, the prices of insurance go up resulting in ridiculous prices to pay.
Pretty soon insurance isn't even going to be worth it to buy because it will cost so much.

Not once did I ever say I cheated the system. The devices I am claiming as lost are broke. What would be the use of paying for another phone if the one I have works.
The cost of insurance being raised is due to inflation caused by shipping cost being raised due to the cost of gasoline.
In fact what I do saves me from multiple insurance claims. Example I washed my old x10. Filled claim as lost. Recieved my replacement. A month later broke my screen. Instead of having to use insurance again I simply swapped out my screens.

Strangely enough, the device now works. I put it on the charger when I had the problems with it and it wouldn't power on and the charging light just flashed. I just plugged it in again 'cuz I was bored stiff more than anything. It started charging. I pressed the power button. It powered on. Battery says it is at 14%. Should I trust this device?

Fill it wirelessly or wired? I'm thinking wirelessly. A replacement device is on it's way anyway and VZW says the battery tested good.

It charged over night with no issues. I transferred my service back to it, but I'm carrying my full charged backup phone with me for a couple of days. VZW tested the battery at the store and claimed it was good.

EVO finicky about charging

Last night, I hooked my EVO up to the stock wall charger to charge it overnight (not uncommon). Since I've gotten the phone, I've been charging the phone upside down (display side down) because the orange light is really bright in a dark room.
This morning, I woke up to the battery signal beeping which is weird because it should only beep once at 15, 10, and 5%.
I've been trying to figure out why I could charge the phone last night and at first, it seemed that the phone just wouldn't charge while it was upside down. Since writing this post though, it seems like the phone won't even charge right side up. It will only charge when the cord is being pulled slightly down by gravity.
What I've noticed about my plug (phone-side) is that the two terminal bumps are no longer as pronounced or raised as they were the day before. I remember that I dropped the phone while plugged in twice last night (both times the phone became unplugged).
Does anybody else (EVO or otherwise) have this issue with the terminals becoing less raised and do you have any advice to return them to a more usable state? I can't stay up and make sure the phone is charging every night.
tl;dr: The terminal bumps on my phone-side plug on my charger/USB cable are no longer raised as they originally were. Is there any way I can fix it without buying a new cable?
(my phone will charge on the other stock charger cable for the other EVO we bought, but I need my own working cable)
I have had similar issue where I plugged it in to charge and in morning it was same level as night before. I turn it off at night while its charging. Had it happen yesterday while plugged in to car charger. Was at 42% and after an hour and half, it was only at 43%. Rebooting it usually fixes it.

It's not a system or software problem. The phone will charge on another charger at any position. The problem is that my plug's terminals aren't stiff anymore.
Happened to me too. Dropped the phone while connected to pc and the two bumps receded. You can try to push on the metal plug (micro usb) of the cord with your hand so that the bumps are prominent again. U may need a bit of force.

I have the same problem too now...
I swear to god i want to murder each and every person at the International Telecommunication Union for making the microUSB the international standard. I find it very very hard to believe that this is more durable than mini USB.. and it already proved itself by my phone not being able to charge after 2 months of owning it.

there was nothing wrong with miniUSB.. i using in nearly all my devices.. my external hard drives, usb hubs, etc.
btw 5/6 of my chargers are designed for the DROID.. im gonna test the oem htc one that came with the phone once i get back home later this week
I think the issue is with the USB cable supplied with the phone. That one is loose and wiggly on my phone, but the spare I bought from Radio Shack still fits tightly.

All 6 of my micro USB cables/chargers dont work with my phone..
it works on my roomate's phone, so my phone has a problem with its port.
It also seems like the iGo connectors from radioshack are larger than the motorola ones
A though on insight. If you look at the construction of the micro usb port used on the evo, it's joined at the bottom, this part is soldered to the board. If the port widens, it widens at the bottom, where the solder joint is... Im sure this leads to instability of the connections at the rear.
This creates the problem where you have to move your charging cable in such a way to make it work, because the actual pins that do anything are coming loose. The housing has good strength elsewhere though.
Motorola uses ports with the join at the opposing end of the connector, which would make them more reliable and user serviceable in end application...
Just something I have noticed while playing dr. on mine.
I have ordered this part and will install it in my evo when it gets in as a test. I'm interested in seeing if it will really make a difference.
The theory is that if it gets widened, you could just compress it down with a small tool vs replacing the whole jack.. Which is risky for inexperienced diy.
My phone charges/stops if I wiggle the cable. Its annoying because if I am not posting attention and plug it in, sometimes it's not even charging. Its also annoying to play robo defense while plugged in to my computer because if I move the wrong way it keeps going in and out of charging and prompting me with usb sync options...
My wifes Evo is fine with my cable so it has to be my phone...
What can I do? I bought this phone 2 weeks used on Craigslist to stay off contract...

And yes. I just read the OP and the phrase "appears to only charge when the cord is slightly pulled by gravity" is the exact phrase I used at the sprint store but they still said it was my fault.

Yeah the usb port is probably about to come off the board and you won't be able to charge anymore. This same thing happened to me...I had to pay the $100 deductible to get another one...
Is it possible to replace the part? Seems like a pretty universal part.

My Evo is being sent to my local sprint store. I called Sprint, they said take it into the store for a warranty issue. The guy at the front desk didn't even turn on the phone, just plugged it into a charger to see it didn't charge and ordered me a new one and it was covered under warranty. I was given some extra batteries for the mean time while it's ordered.
Everything was free.

[Q] Help. My Evo is dead

First of all, I did read through other posts and they are similar but not the same as my problem and didn't resolve my issue.
I have noticed recently that when I plug my Evo in at night (samsung wall charger) the charge light comes on, and when i get up (usually about 5 hours) the charge light is still on but battery is not fully charged. this has happened twice in the past week.
Flash to this morning..... same thing happened but my phone in NON-RESPONSIVE at all. No charge light, NO power, wont turn on. I tried my car charger and my HTC wall charger that came with the Evo (it has a blackberry cable but the "pod" is HTC) and tried plugging into PC plugging in with no battery and no luck. I don't have any people readily available to borrow their battery so i don't know what to do.
I would just take it to Sprint(as far away as possible, lol) but it is rooted running Warm 2.2

Your cable or charger went bad, this happened to me recently, if they are verified good, then your battery discharged so low that the charger won't charge it anymore.
Bridge the terminals in parallel of a similiar charged battery for 10-15 min to bring up the minimum voltage so that you can charge it fully.

Could be a bad battery, my sisters phone drained so much it had no charge light and wouldn't turn on. You could pick up some cheap batteries off ebay or just take it to the sprint store and ask them if they have a battery you could just try. Even though it is rooted, it is not like you are trying to get them to repair it...unless the new battery doesn't work.
I would think it's the battery. Normally when the battery is completely drained though I get a flashing orange light. Seems like you get no response at all. I suggest trying a different battery and if that doesn't work take take it to Sprint because if your phone won't turn on with a good battery there will be no way for the people at the store to know that you are rooted. I'd just take it to Sprint first thing. Because if it is the battery the worst that can happen is that Sprint charges you for the battery. If it isn't the battery, you get a new phone. Also if they try to charge you for the battery you already know what is wrong so you can just go somewhere else for the battery.

They really don't care. You act like Sprint is going to sue you and take away your phone for life or something. I took my rooted-Evo in without insurance and they allowed me to get another one for 100 bucks and added insurance to my plan WELL AFTER the 30 days after purchase. Try 6 months later. You got nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

dont worry i walked into sprint with myns and the guy booted it up couple of times and he didnt care.
he told me i was gonna get a new evo and stuff, and i walked out
Girlfriends on her way to sprint. hopefully back with a new phone. or at least a working version of mine

how do i do this? They say I have to take it to a store with a tech and they will take care of it because i have insurance, but if it is just the battery then i don't want them to know my phone is rooted(whether they will say anything or not)

Then bury your phone. I do not see what all the fuss is about Sprint seeing you got a rooted phone.

Not charging

Last night my phone died after 2 days off cable due to me having to use my cord for another device. I plugged it in today to find that it wasn't charging at all. I decided to give it a few minutes before trying, thinking it may not be turning on because it still needs some juice. I waited 30 minutes and it wouldn't turn on still, just gave me the little animation of a battery draining to indicate that it needs to be charged. After this, I figured that it's possible the cable is just dead, so I opted to borrow a cable from my brother. The cable charges his phone just fine, but it doesn't work with charging my phone. I took a shower while waiting for it to perhaps get the juice it needed, and still no dice. I tried several different outlets thinking perhaps the outlet was dead, and still nothing.
I've had the phone for a little over a month, so I'm not sure how long I have to turn it in or not; I'd hope it'd be 3 months for factory issues, but judging from how people mention 14 days, I'd assume that they're eager to push responsibility of broken devices onto the customer as fast as they can. Do you guys have any idea of what could be wrong? Perhaps if it's possible for me to get a replacement at this point?
I've been running the Lifeless v.11 Rom for a while with no issues, I haven't flashed anything in possibly a week or two, so I honestly doubt this is a software issue. It's never been exposed to water, but then again I really don't trust phones to detect if they've been damaged or not since it seems even a humid day is enough for those small water damage detection stickers to run pink.

Do you guys have any idea of what could be wrong? Perhaps if it's possible for me to get a replacement at this point?
I've been running the Lifeless v.11 Rom for a while with no issues, I haven't flashed anything in possibly a week or two, so I honestly doubt this is a software issue. It's never been exposed to water, but then again I really don't trust phones to detect if they've been damaged or not since it seems even a humid day is enough for those small water damage detection stickers to run pink.

wish i could help you man:/ only thing i can think of is taking of the back plating and make sure the connector is fine.it would suck if we have another evo 4g on our hands, especially without a removable battery

Pull your battery, try again

Yea, going to update this. Sprint was giving me issues and trying to cough up money from me, so I pulled the battery and cleaned the port with a q-tip and it charged fine again. I was in for a scare there, but it's back to life.
Same problem...didn't have to pull battery

Just wanted to chime in with my experience.
I had same issue. Battery completely drained with a visit to the relatives (low cell signal).
Got home and plugged it in for 5min, the "battery charging" animation came on when short pressing the power button.
Had to move the phone to a different charger for the night and noticed that I couldn't get it to even show the charging animation while on the charger. Indeed after 8 hours on the charger the next morning it still wouldn't turn on. I thought I would have to take it back to Best Buy. On a whim, I thought I would drain all of the capacitance from the system by pressing and holding the power button to see if that would allow it to restart the charge cycle. So I held the power button for about 30-45sec off the charger, then waited about 30min and plugged it in at work.
It worked. Not sure why, but I didn't have to return it to Best Buy, so I'm happy.

[Q] How to Repair a Dead HTC One X?

About a year ago, I bought an HTC One X from Three UK. I recently came to China on holiday and bought an external battery pack from a market stall. Everything seemed to be going well until one day I plugged my phone into the external battery pack and it suddenly died even though it was on ~50% charge, it wouldn't boot and it wouldn't charge when plugged into a power supply (no red LED shining). No combination of pressing buttons would work, so I decided to get it fixed.
I went to a repair guy in China who said that he would charge me if he could repair my phone, but no charge if he couldn't. He disassembled my phone but was unable to fix my phone. He said the problem was that the motherboard was 'burnt' (I'm not sure if the literal translation is correct), and that it would cost 70% of the original phone's value to repair (although he could be wrong about my motherboard being dead)
Now my dilemma is this: I'm not sure if I should send it to Three UK or ask another cheap repair shop in the UK. The problem with sending it to Three UK is I'm not sure whether they will repair it or not - my phone is completely dead and I don't know whether they will count that as improper usage. Also, now that my phone has been opened, will the repair center be able to tell that my phone has been opened before (I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to open up the HTC One X) and then deny my warranty?

I haven't but I probably let it charge a while after my HTC One X died. Out of curiosity, why one day? It seems an awfully long time.
I'll plug it in now, and when should I take if off the wall charger? Also, what signs should I be looking for?

I'm hoping for a blast of life. I once thought I hardbricked mine, I left it in the wall charger and it booted up in the bootloader after being in the charger for a day. Reflashed my rom and boot.img and never have i had problems. I suggest trying to boot the phone up after a day or so, if this will not work try and charge it again and acces the bootloader right away. If you can access the bootloader you can flash custom software. Does the red LED show if you charge it? Can't you acces the bootloader at all?
Oh ok, so am I hoping for it to suddenly turn on or am I hoping that after a day or so I will be able to boot into bootloader?
I have not really used it or charged it since my phone died, but the red LED doesn't show if I charge it and I cannot access bootloader

Yes just leave it be, it's all the advice I can give to you right now.. Try it and if it doesn't work you can always get a replacement. This is a weird issue though, I also had a HTC sensation which behaved the same. Left it overnight on charger and it booted to bootloader, then I used a battery script to charge it up while it's restarting to bootloader.
Just leave it on the charger for a day or overnight, see if it turns on
The same thing happened to my previous One XL. In my case I flashed a recovery, had to reboot and the phone just "died". It wouldn't charge or turn on. Not even after charging overnight. It took a JTAG repair to bring it back to life.

Possible fix
Okay, so a while back I had this same problem. My phone turned off, and whenever I plugged it in to charge it did not seem to be charging, odd. The red light was not coming on either. I was told to do 2 things, i cant remember which order so try both.
Option 1:
Plug your phone into your turned on computer with the USB cable and leave it there to charge until the red light comes on (leave for 1-2 hours, more if you feel it necessary), then quickly put it on charge using the wall charger.
Option 2 (not likely to work):
Plug your phone into your wall socket with the USB cable and wall charger and leave it there to charge until the red light comes on (leave for 1-2 hours, more if you feel it necessary), then quickly put it on charge through your turned on computer using the USB cable.
If neither of these work (as dumb as this may sound)turn off your phone and put your phone in the freezer for 15-30 minutes (This is done to discharge the battery, wont break your phone). When you've left it there for your chosen time, try option 1 again. If that doesn't work, turn the phone off again and put it back in the freezer for the same time and try option 2. If they don't work, i'm sorry I don't know how to help you.

Thanks, when you say it booted to bootloader, do you mean you had to press some button combination and it went into bootloader mode or did you wake up and your phone just happened to be in bootloader mode?
Also, would opening up the phone void the warranty? Because, if so, I'm not sure I will be able to get a replacement.

Which problem would your solution be fixing? Would it be trying to fix the battery? Because, apparently, the problem with my phone is the dead motherboard

Sorry I meant charging. I found it hard to believe that your motherboard was the problem, but if you're sure that's the issue then don't bother trying my suggestion. That really sucks man, how'd it happen?

I think everyone is kinda missing the point here, the OP made reference to an external battery pack from a market stall which seems to be what killed the handset. Coupled with the fact that a seemingly reasonable repair shop, they didn't charge any money, said the board was dead I think it's safe to assume that the external battery pack was the wrong voltage/amperage or it was faulty. And just in case you do try to charge it, on the slim chance the shop was wrong about the board, it's no good charging on your laptop, you need to plug it into wall charger.

I did leave my phone plugged into my laptop for a few hours, but no red charging LED. I also left my phone plugged into the wall charger overnight, but also no red charging LED. Does this confirm my fear that my motherboard is completely dead?
The guy I went to seemed reasonable, but he didn't seem 100% reliable. He didn't have a manual of the HTC One X up on his computer screen or anywhere, he just went straight in, although it might just be me being the skeptical one. I would say I don't completely trust him, so should I go to another cheap repair shop in the UK or just send it to Three and hope they don't notice the phone has already been opened?

Anything is worth a try if it isn't going to cost you money, although I must say I have seen a number of cases of external battery packs frying boards. I would say three would be your best option if it's still under warranty, but the there is a screw inside that has a seal over it and if that screw was removed then they will notice the broken seal, unless they are blind. They look for things like that so they can get out of repairing handsets free of charge. If the phone is dead you don't really have anything to lose. The only other option is sell it for parts

When you say you've seen a number of similar cases, do you often repair mobile phones or as a job?
If I do send it in to Three for repair, and they notice the broken seal, how much will they charge me to repair it or will they even give me this option at all?

To answer you dilemma directly, send it to Three and play dumb as a post. You have no idea what they're talking about...did they sell you a refurbished phone? You're outraged, blah blah.

I suppose I should have continued in the other thread, I just thought my post was a bit cumbersome and overloaded with excess information.
Three did send me a refurbished phone when they weren't able to repair my previous HTC One X, but I'm pretty sure they would have tidied up the internals as well (adding their seals)??? They even sent it to me with some blue plastic tape covering the back and sides of the phone.
I could try going to HTC directly, but I suppose it would be more complicated than just asking Three, so I'll do what you said and hope for the best

Extreme battery drain

So my phone was at full charge. Took it off the charger and ate dinner. I was not using my phone and noticed it was extremely hot. Battery was down to 40 percent in less than an hour. I reboot phone thinking it was a wake lock issue. Phone battery dies and drains to 0 percent. I had to plug it into a charger in order to turn it on. From here I notice that the phone gets extremely hot and charges extremely slow. It's been charging for an hour and only 5 percent has been charged. I think maybe it was my ROM or a persisting wake lock. I wipe my phone and clean flash cyanogen. Phone still getting hot and charging extremely slow. Could I possibly have a malfunctioning battery or something?

Woke up in the middle of the night after about 4 hours of charging. Battery was at about 40% or so but the phone was the hottest it's ever been. I decided to turn it off and unplug it from the charger. Woke up this morning and it's officially dead dead. The orange/red LED won't turn on when plugged into the charger and I can't turn it on or try to boot into recovery.
I'm going to take it to Costco and see if I can get a replacement since I'm in my 90 day period. This certainly has to be a manufacturer's defect since I did not have water damage, drop my phone, overclock, or anything risky.

There have been a few people who have had the same issue. I haven't read of a fix or even what causes it.

Check and see what is using the battery. A day ago Google play store was the cause of battery drain for a lot of people.

Well my phone can't even turn on right now - it is literally a dead phone. I'll check one more time before trying to exchange it at Costco. I don't think it's Google play because I did a full wipe and fresh install of Cyanogen. I did not even setup my WiFi and put my phone on Airplane mode while charging. It was still running hot and charging extremely slow.

I had this all happen to me a few weeks ago. Was inexplicable. Not sure how it happened while the phone was OFF. Brought into Verizon, they sent me a new one, without much hassle.

Just got back from Costco. Got a brand new phone without questions asked. Great service.
This is happening to me again right now..
I'm in luck though, as I'm on a charger and around 50%.. I went from about 100% to 11% in 20 minutes this morning. I've been running SlimKat for about a week now, and have had no issues.
I have no idea why this just pops up at a seemingly random time.
Now, I've wiped the entire phone, installed BoneStock, and it's still persisting.
What can I try to get this fixed?
I've held PWR and Vol+/- to reset the phone.. but this is still occuring.
Anything? Anyone?

I'm having a similar issue. I'm worried that I won't have enough battery to return the phone to stock and relock the bootloader, which is what I meant in the other thread when I said unable to return to stock.

Have you tried turning it off and plugging it into a wall outlet for a while?
What recovery are you using?
If I was you, I would probably plug it in with it off, hope that I get enough juice into it over a period of time, that I could flash the full odex stock rom.
The Faux Hboot in my Red Text Hex Edited hboot thread, so that it appears as though it's s-on and locked.
Flash stock recovery and warranty it to HTC. They should just take it apart and put a new battery in and send you the same device back.
Those are pretty much the steps I would take if I was in your shoes.
Hope that maybe that helps a little and that you can get enough of a charge to do so.

OK got it powered off and charging now. I've heard a lot of horror stories about HTCs customer service, any reason you would deal with them directly instead of VZW?

I've heard good things about HTC's Customer service, compared to Verizon's especially.
Not to mention, Verizon will wanna know if you have Insurance, will maybe make you pay a deductible.
Even if they don't, you will likely get a refurbished CLN replacement, which may or may not exhibit it's own issues of some kind.
I would rather have my own device fixed and sent back to me, then receive someone else's fixed device that may have had a bigger issue or stress to parts not yet known.
Just how I feel about it, and I do not much care for Verizon, other then for actual phone service.
You are more then welcome to try your hand with Verizon if you would prefer.
I also have a Blue One, so Verizon wouldn't do much for me...

My wife got a DNA with a bad cable and I called htc. They didn't fuss or ask any questions. They took my info and sent a new one. It was much easier than dealing with vzw.
