[Q] Help. My Evo is dead - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First of all, I did read through other posts and they are similar but not the same as my problem and didn't resolve my issue.
I have noticed recently that when I plug my Evo in at night (samsung wall charger) the charge light comes on, and when i get up (usually about 5 hours) the charge light is still on but battery is not fully charged. this has happened twice in the past week.
Flash to this morning..... same thing happened but my phone in NON-RESPONSIVE at all. No charge light, NO power, wont turn on. I tried my car charger and my HTC wall charger that came with the Evo (it has a blackberry cable but the "pod" is HTC) and tried plugging into PC plugging in with no battery and no luck. I don't have any people readily available to borrow their battery so i don't know what to do.
I would just take it to Sprint(as far away as possible, lol) but it is rooted running Warm 2.2
what can i do?

Your cable or charger went bad, this happened to me recently, if they are verified good, then your battery discharged so low that the charger won't charge it anymore.
Bridge the terminals in parallel of a similiar charged battery for 10-15 min to bring up the minimum voltage so that you can charge it fully.

Could be a bad battery, my sisters phone drained so much it had no charge light and wouldn't turn on. You could pick up some cheap batteries off ebay or just take it to the sprint store and ask them if they have a battery you could just try. Even though it is rooted, it is not like you are trying to get them to repair it...unless the new battery doesn't work.

I would think it's the battery. Normally when the battery is completely drained though I get a flashing orange light. Seems like you get no response at all. I suggest trying a different battery and if that doesn't work take take it to Sprint because if your phone won't turn on with a good battery there will be no way for the people at the store to know that you are rooted. I'd just take it to Sprint first thing. Because if it is the battery the worst that can happen is that Sprint charges you for the battery. If it isn't the battery, you get a new phone. Also if they try to charge you for the battery you already know what is wrong so you can just go somewhere else for the battery.
It could be the cable but you say the charge light stayed on so it doesn't seem like it. I have gone through 3 cables already you can get the OEM for 5 bucks on ebay.

They really don't care. You act like Sprint is going to sue you and take away your phone for life or something. I took my rooted-Evo in without insurance and they allowed me to get another one for 100 bucks and added insurance to my plan WELL AFTER the 30 days after purchase. Try 6 months later. You got nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

just want to make sure

dont worry i walked into sprint with myns and the guy booted it up couple of times and he didnt care.
he told me i was gonna get a new evo and stuff, and i walked out

Girlfriends on her way to sprint. hopefully back with a new phone. or at least a working version of mine

how do i do this? They say I have to take it to a store with a tech and they will take care of it because i have insurance, but if it is just the battery then i don't want them to know my phone is rooted(whether they will say anything or not)

Then bury your phone. I do not see what all the fuss is about Sprint seeing you got a rooted phone.

Why do you need one? Most stores will test the phone and if they cannot find anything wrong they won't replace it for no reason.

My battery only last at most 2 hours and that idle and it takes like 3 hour to be fully charged and now today my screen is freezing bad

Unless he is rooted, and jacked up his ROM.
Just drop it in the toilet.

Don't break it or drop it in the toilet...that will cost you $100 in deductable. If the problems you are having are legitimate that should be enough to get you a replacement phone.
I usually don't condone lying to get something (but seeing as your problem is a pretty big one); but if they tell you no, tell them that after it has been charging all night it gets so hot you almost need an oven mit to pick it up. You tried different cords and the battery out of your friend's EVO and it did the same thing. So you think it has something to do with the phone.
Before you take it in, use an RUU and put back on an official rom. If you used Unrevoked Forever, use the S-On tool too. For one, you can see if it's caused by a bad rom. Also, they can't ***** about you rooting your phone.
Also, try wiping your battery stats, just in case.
Edit: also try their battery recalibration thing. Drain the battery, fully charge it, unplug it and charge it until the light is green. Unplug and plug the cord back in until it goes green three or four more times. Then turn it on and charge for another few hours.
don't forget to do the hokie pokie and swing a dead cat by it's tail while you wait for the battery to charge!

I think my Evo is dead

My Evo won't power on at all... no lights on when plugged in, and my PC doesn't see it either. I've tried different USB cables, and I've tried charging from a regular outlet... still nothing. I pulled the battery for about 10 minutes, and still nothing.
It was working perfectly yesterday.. even consistently getting 30+ hours on a charge. I had about 10% battery left when I went to bed.. I plugged in my USB cable before going to bed, and I remember for sure seeing the charge light come on when I plugged it in. When I woke up (late because my phone is my alarm), it was dead.
I have a friend with an Evo, and I'd like to try his battery before taking it in..gonna do that in an hour or so. I just want to do all the troubleshooting I can before taking it in to let some idiot look at it. The phone shouldn't work with the power cord plugged in, but no battery.. right? So would a completely bad battery show the same symptoms I have?
And if it is a bad phone, does anyone have any experience with Radio Shack's warranty? I bought their 1 year warranty when I bought my Evo on launch day. Should I expect to walk out with a new Evo, or should I expect a loaner phone and a wait while they ship off my Evo? Is Radio Shack going to ask or care that it's rooted? Since it doesn't power on, they can't tell in the store.. but if they ask me, I'm not sure if I can lie with a straight face.

The phone does not work just hooked up to a charger without a battery so it's completely possible that your issue is the battery and it definitely sounds like it.
I don't have any history with Radioshack's warranty but I would suggest trying your friends battery first, if that resolves the issue then when you take it in they will just replace the battery which shouldn't require them to even boot the phone.
I tried my friend's battery and it worked. Went to Radio Shack and told them what was up, and after a 30 minute phone call, they were able to give me a replacement battery. Problem is, it's not an HTC battery and it's only 1100mAh. I mentioned the difference, and was told that's all they could do for me today and if I'm not happy with the battery I can come back and they'll take care of me. Had the guy not been so nice I probably would have thrown a fit, but either way, I have a working phone now so I'm happy. And unless I misunderstood, I think my 12 month plan got reset for the battery, so if the replacement dies within a year I can get another one.

Glad to hear it went well.
I would push getting a stock battery for two reasons:
1) That's 25% smaller and thus your battery life is going to be significantly less.
2) Batteries are not all created equal and it's likely that what they gave you could be a cheapie.
I've been running one of the chinese cheapies for five months. It's a 3500 and it last all day with heavy use. I think I paid 17 dollars for it. The extended seidio I bought for my treo fried in a month.

The battery they gave me is a Digital Energy brand. It came up for the first time at 54%. 4 hours of moderate use later, it's down to 39%. I'm going to run with it for a week and if I can make it 24 hours on a charge, I don't think I'm going to worry about it. If it can't get through a full day, I'll call and see what Radio Shack can do for me. If they give me any trouble, I'll probably just shell out the money for a good battery and keep this one as a spare.
I'll post an update once I've used this battery long enough to give it a fair review..

Just keep in mind that the battery they gave you is 27% smaller and therefore will very likely not last as long as the stock battery.
My phone did this exact same thing this morning. I even had it plugged in last night and was charging fine. When I awoke my phone was off and would not turn on. After about an hout of trying to get it to charge with no luck. I then borrowed the wifes phone to call sprint. I left the phone plugged in and what do you know as soon as the lady answers the flashing orange light comes on and after a minuit of that a steady orange light. Haven't had any problems before or after this event. But the lady at sprint told me it was the charging port and i would need to take my phone in for a replacement.

Powered off the phone and went to bed. No sign of problems, battery life has been great, 50% charge on the phone. Woke up and it wouldn't budge. Took me a minute to figure out that it was the battery. Once I did, went to the Sprint store and they tested it, confirming it was dead. They replaced it quickly, no questions, no charge.

[Q] Help!! My phone bricked itself!!

Somehow my phone has bricked itself. It's a Droid Incredible 2 that I purchased off an ebay power seller a few months ago. I've had no problems with it. I got myself a wireless charger for Christmas. Not sure if that is relevant or not, but wanted to give all the facts.
Last night I put the phone on the wireless charger when I went to bed like I have since Christmas. This was about 2200ish. Around 0300ish I hear beeping sounds from the charger and I hear a loud ticking sound from that vicinity as well. No idea if the ticking sound was coming from the charger. I was dead asleep and thought I might be dreaming it. Then it stopped. I went back to sleep and thought nothing of it until this morning when I picked up my phone and it was dead.
By dead I mean completely dead. Press the power button and nothing happens. Plug a charger into it and the charging light blinks once every 4-5 seconds. The phone still will not power on. Battery pull had no effect. Tried to get into recovery by holding the volume button and power button down. Nothing at all.
Any ideas before I take it down to the VZW store this evening? My phone is rooted so I may have voided my warranty and I have no way to un-root it. It seems to be a hardware issue, not a software one though so it shouldn't matter.

Sounds more like your charger fried your battery, and that's if you are lucky. The other possibility is that your charging port is fried as well, not as likely though since you said it still blinks when you plug it in. My personal opinion would be to get a new battery and charge it with your normal charger, if that works then toss the wireless one, it's probably bad news.
Unfortunately if you had purchased the phone from verizon they would have just given you a new battery free, they usually do that no questions asked one time for each customer, at least from all my encounters that's how it's been.

before you do that you need to plug your phone in for a few hours so it can get a good charge. It sounds like you wireless charger wasn't working and your phone is dead. Then pull your battery and try to turn your phone on.

good call, didn't even think about that, if it doesn't work after trying to charge it with the normal charger then most likely the wireless charger fried the battery and you it just needs to be replaced.

Sadly I don't have another battery to test with. I'm sure they have one at the VZW store I can test with (I hope). It doesn't power on even plugged into the wall though. Shouldn't it power on plugged into the wall whether there's a battery in it or not?
I'm not sure how it could have fried the charging port if it was charging wirelessly. Unless you're talking about the charging connectors inside the phone. That would be bad news altogether. But if that happened, the phone wouldn't go from fully charged to 0% in just 3-4 hours. So that would indicate the entire phone is fried which would make me extremely unhappy.

It won't charge when plugged into the charger. The charging light doesn't come on at all.

I would go to a verizon store and check on testing out another battery then. Hopefully that wireless charger didn't fry anything internally. Also, if your battery is completely dead then the phone won't bootup even if plugged in, it's like having a dead battery in your car, if you have low battery your car will start up but if you have a dead battery it won't because it needs at least a little juice to fire up the alternator. Hope that analogy made sense lol.

It did. I just figured with no battery it would bypass the battery and run just on AC power. I'm using my DInc at the moment so I still have a phone. The battery for the DInc has the terminals on the other side and I'm guessing it's not as simple as just turning the battery over. Last thing I want is to make things worse.

Nope, don't even attempt that, you might cause more problems than you already have. Bottomline though, I'd just take it in to a verizon and see how they can help you. They are usually really cool about giving a hand at most stores.

I'm desperate at this point and that still struck me as a bad idea.
I can't find any other instances on Google where using a wireless charger fried a phone.
Went to the VZW store. They said my phone had no warranty on it, but since I purchased insurance they'd overnight me a replacement. They said the battery is good. The phone itself is dead apparently. With the holiday and me getting there after 1700, I'm guessing I won't get it until Tuesday. I'm now worried about how to wipe my personal data from the phone before sending it in.
Smash the phone.. they wouldn't find out.. its an insurance replacement already and that's 99% of the reason insurance exists.. for water/smash/loss to the phone.

agreed. Assurion actually performs a master reset on devices before booting (if phone actually boots). If not they will use your phone as a donor phone. I use assurion as the rooters get out of jail card. They just dont give a damn.
In fact I have "lost" many phones just to have parts lol. Cheaper and faster shipping than eBay.

After sleeping on it, I remembered that I've got a screen lock on there so my data is all safe. The phone is programmed to nuke itself if someone enters the wrong code too many times. I'm not too worried about it now.

Not trying to sound like a ****, but it's people like you who cheat the system for their own benefits. Inturn, the prices of insurance go up resulting in ridiculous prices to pay.
Pretty soon insurance isn't even going to be worth it to buy because it will cost so much.
Not once did I ever say I cheated the system. The devices I am claiming as lost are broke. What would be the use of paying for another phone if the one I have works.
The cost of insurance being raised is due to inflation caused by shipping cost being raised due to the cost of gasoline.
In fact what I do saves me from multiple insurance claims. Example I washed my old x10. Filled claim as lost. Recieved my replacement. A month later broke my screen. Instead of having to use insurance again I simply swapped out my screens.

Strangely enough, the device now works. I put it on the charger when I had the problems with it and it wouldn't power on and the charging light just flashed. I just plugged it in again 'cuz I was bored stiff more than anything. It started charging. I pressed the power button. It powered on. Battery says it is at 14%. Should I trust this device?

Fill it wirelessly or wired? I'm thinking wirelessly. A replacement device is on it's way anyway and VZW says the battery tested good.

It charged over night with no issues. I transferred my service back to it, but I'm carrying my full charged backup phone with me for a couple of days. VZW tested the battery at the store and claimed it was good.

Not charging

Last night my phone died after 2 days off cable due to me having to use my cord for another device. I plugged it in today to find that it wasn't charging at all. I decided to give it a few minutes before trying, thinking it may not be turning on because it still needs some juice. I waited 30 minutes and it wouldn't turn on still, just gave me the little animation of a battery draining to indicate that it needs to be charged. After this, I figured that it's possible the cable is just dead, so I opted to borrow a cable from my brother. The cable charges his phone just fine, but it doesn't work with charging my phone. I took a shower while waiting for it to perhaps get the juice it needed, and still no dice. I tried several different outlets thinking perhaps the outlet was dead, and still nothing.
I've had the phone for a little over a month, so I'm not sure how long I have to turn it in or not; I'd hope it'd be 3 months for factory issues, but judging from how people mention 14 days, I'd assume that they're eager to push responsibility of broken devices onto the customer as fast as they can. Do you guys have any idea of what could be wrong? Perhaps if it's possible for me to get a replacement at this point?
I've been running the Lifeless v.11 Rom for a while with no issues, I haven't flashed anything in possibly a week or two, so I honestly doubt this is a software issue. It's never been exposed to water, but then again I really don't trust phones to detect if they've been damaged or not since it seems even a humid day is enough for those small water damage detection stickers to run pink.

I've been running the Lifeless v.11 Rom for a while with no issues, I haven't flashed anything in possibly a week or two, so I honestly doubt this is a software issue. wish i could help you man:/ only thing i can think of is taking of the back plating and make sure the connector is fine.it would suck if we have another evo 4g on our hands, especially without a removable battery

Pull your battery, try again

Yea, going to update this. Sprint was giving me issues and trying to cough up money from me, so I pulled the battery and cleaned the port with a q-tip and it charged fine again. I was in for a scare there, but it's back to life.
Same problem...didn't have to pull battery

Just wanted to chime in with my experience.
I had same issue. Battery completely drained with a visit to the relatives (low cell signal).
Got home and plugged it in for 5min, the "battery charging" animation came on when short pressing the power button.
Had to move the phone to a different charger for the night and noticed that I couldn't get it to even show the charging animation while on the charger. Indeed after 8 hours on the charger the next morning it still wouldn't turn on. I thought I would have to take it back to Best Buy. On a whim, I thought I would drain all of the capacitance from the system by pressing and holding the power button to see if that would allow it to restart the charge cycle. So I held the power button for about 30-45sec off the charger, then waited about 30min and plugged it in at work.
It worked. Not sure why, but I didn't have to return it to Best Buy, so I'm happy.

[Q] Phone seems to be unable to charge battery

So, my dad and I had an Epic 4G Touch. I was wanting to use the Epic 4G Touch for a project (using the WiiScales android app). I was hoping to use my dad's phone, because my phone won't be able here till the end of the month.
However, the problem with this phone, is that for whatever reason, I can't get the phone to charge. Maybe it actually is charging, but the battery is just so depleted that I can't tell if it is or not.
Is there any better way to determine if it is? I am not sure if I bring it in to the Sprint store they will replace the battery (since we have both upgraded our phones). Or if they will even bother to check it since it is outside the warranty period.
Any suggestions?

It isn't that, I am aware of that issue.
It seems to be the charger cable or the charging port. I can use my S4 charger and it will work fine for the most part, there is still some issues with it charging, but no where near as many issues as before. But if I use the original charger, it just flat out doesn't work.
I am sorta confused as to why Sprint didn't initially try to resolve this when my dad took it into the store, as we have TEP on all our phones, so if the charging port was the problem, it should have been fixed or replaced.

It depends on what they told your dad. Your best bet to get around this issue it to purchase a couple of stock batteries from Ebay. Most will give you a wall charger also. I have 3 E4GT and 5 batteries. Very rarely do I charge via the wall or PC (USB). When the phone is down to about 10%, I change batteries. It takes about 3 hours to charge a battery with the wall charger.

Well, I had it on the charger last night, and it was charging. I saw the red LED charging light on it, so I turned the phone off and set it down gently so that the cable and the charger port wouldn't get messed up. I saw the charging led was still going so I just left it that way overnight. When I woke up, the phone had died from being turned off and went from a 35% charge to a 0% charge. So I am not sure what happened there, or what caused the phone to die.

Replace the battery with a charged one. If you lose juice, then the problem is the phone. If not then the problem is with the battery. My guess is that the battery is not holding a charge. If it was charging when you set it down, then it should have been charged when you woke up. Especially if you didn't move the phone during that time frame.
Sounds like you will need to replace the battery.
