Phone is hard bricked. I didn't realize it until CWM was telling me "HEY IDIOT THIS ROM ISN"T FOR YOUR PHONE".... anyway it doesn't turn on, the screen doesn't come on or anything. The only life i get out of it is when I unplug it from my computer i hear a noise. NOT EVEN WHEN I PLUG IT IN. Odin doesn't recognize it or anything.
I will be visiting Sprint tomorrow and going to play it dumb saying IDK WHATS GOING ON. THE PHONE WONT TURN ON!?!?
When they get the phone back will they know that I bricked it?.. Like the flash counters and everything on it?
Wow, just wow, you don't have to go and play dumb, I'm guessing they will know that right away.

Let this be a lesson.
I'm all for giving someone a hard time for bricking their phone but I think y'all are being a little too harsh on the guy I mean he's not blaming anyone else and he did call himself an idiot in his post and he's not asking for some cure all solution
Give the man a break I'm sure he learned a lesson without you guys heckling him

Fraud. That's what his intentions are. Which will impact us all.

Isn't bricking covered by insurance?
If he pays the deductible then yes, he can make a claim with the insurance. Playing dumb and having Sprint replace for $35 (or whatever it is) is being fraudulent.
OP, you have sort of stepped up and sort of owned the mistake. Sort of unless you pay the deductible or buy out right. Otherwise even that "sort of" is negated.
Own it, pay it.

Never, if it drop my burger I go buy a new one. But i have never dropped my burger and if I couldn't afford another I blow it off and eat it.
Also let me point out if you have insurance on your car and get into an accident they fix it that's what you pay insurance. If you crash your car into a tree to collect money it's called insurance fraud they don't pay and have the right to prosecute.

No, I can say I haven't. I was brought up and taught to take ownership of my mistakes and learn from them, not pass the buck.
Believe it is called character.
Pull your battery out, put back, hold volume down, keep holding v down, after 3 or 4 seconds, press & hold power button for about a sec & release while still holding volume down. Hopefully your splash screen will pop up. Make sure you use the volume up/down to pick boot into recovery & press power to select. Good luck.

I think the correlation is not really accurate.
When you drop your burger, that's accidental and most restaurants will absorb the cost of that one burger because gaining a repeat customer is worth more than that one meal. If you stare the manager in the eye and purposefully drop the burger and demand another one, they'll laugh as they kick you to the curb.
On the other hand, when someone flashes a ROM, they have to know that they are voiding their claim on the warranty. It's a deliberate thing. The OP's phone didn't boot itself into recovery and try to flash an international ROM. The OP made the choice to root and flash ROMs, therefore any issues caused by said flashing is his responsibility. Not Sprint's. Not Samsung's. OP's responsibility.
And the solution to the problem is a simple JTAG procedure. The cost of $60 is a small price to pay in order to learn a valuable lesson: be 100% sure of what you're flashing prior to flashing it.
Edit: And the fact that there is a cost is really important. The retention of these type of lessons is directly proportional to the price paid. If there's no price paid ('cause he played dumb and got a free phone), then the lesson's impact will be negligible.

They will know what you did. Should just buy a used phone off Craigslist or eBay. Going through insurance playing stupid just makes Sprint hike up prices for everyone else. Next time read before you flash something.

First off everyone needs to stop all the ignorant nonsense about returning a phone through the insurance will jack up prices on Sprint. It's really just sad that you don't understand a thing about how the business works.
Asurion is the company that handles the phone insurance for Sprint, they are not owned by Sprint nor are they ran by Sprint. Asurion is the phone insurance company for 15 other Carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, Boost, T-Mobile, etc... They make tons of money for every single person on those carriers who pay the monthly premium to insure their phones. Multiply that ludicrous amount by 12 for each month and you'll see they can easily bankroll their insurance operation, becuase 100% of those people don't necessarily have issues with their phones.
Dead phones are usually sent back to the manufacturer and fixed/replaced and those are called Refurbs. Refurbs are usually what Asurion provides back as a replacement phone.
As to the OP's phone, I've had a similar issue happen to me and it wasn't due to flashing a ROM at all, the internal memory failed and it wasn't due to flashing. I took my phone to Sprint, which I have flash many roms on prior, and they couldn't do a thing to the phone, nor did they know I flashed it or whether or not it had a custom rom on it. It was DOA.
I paid ZERO deductible and got a new phone in 3 days and nobody's ass got hurt in the process, so all you Sprint Price Jacker conspiracy theorist need to get some sleep, preferably with your tin hats on.
OP, just take your phone in, if you have insurance or not Sprint will help you out. Just like the friggin' burger example, they'll help you out if you drop your burger.

My wife took her Evo to the Sprint store to get a new cover for her phone. She set her phone on the counter to get a credit card when a Sprint employee grabbed her phone and hooked it up to a computer. Any ideas on what they did..... btw she is rooted and now recovery is acting all screwey. Thanks in advance.
Dave
How long was it on the computer?
They may have run SLATE on it, which goes through all settings in the device to check for errors and battery saving methods. It shouldn't screw with recovery but it WILL NOT work on a rooted device.
She said it was pretty quick. Maybe the saw the super user icon or whatever and didn't do it. But her recovery is acting weird.... when I hit reboot it goes to the cwm icon and I have to do a battery pull to power down. Not a big deal I can still backup, restore, flash etc but can't power down from recovery screen.

While the techs at the Sprint store were working on my phone, they had another phone that someone had left with them so they could move everything over to their new one (or something to that effect). There were nudie pictures that the dude had taken of his girlfriend, and instead of just looking past that & moving the files, they were actually looking at the photos. They told me that they get that a lot - people bring in their phones with dirty pictures of their girlfriend and ask them to move them over. I guess that's what you get for not knowing how to transfer files AND leaving said files with horny 20-something male employees. So you know they do look through people's phones instead of just doing their jobs.
But yeah, they shouldn't have just picked up the phone & started messing with it. Call Sprint and complain... if you complain enough you might get something out of it.

What would I say? They effed up my wifes rooted Evos custom recovery? Her phone has been acting a little dopey since they did whatever they did.
For your recovery issues... have you tried reflashing the recovery?
And I would definitely call up Sprint. You just tell them that your wife was in there, buying a case, and was getting her card to pay when they took her phone without asking or explanation and plugged it up. Tell them that buying a case is irrelevant to running tests on the phone and demand an explanation for it. Tell them that your phone is acting finicky and that it wasn't before they plugged it up. They'll have to explain for themselves or back into a deal. Oh how many times I have called, and they have offered something to make up for their mistakes....

I personally don't work at Sprint, but if you play dumb and you make up a good enough excuse, their's an 85% chance that they'll give you a new one. I mean since it isn't physical damage, you're in luck. I say i's worth a shot. My E4GT is at Sprint right now, I completely reverted it back to stock and they had no clue on what was going on with it and they decided to give a new one. Just try it. Just lie and say something like "It was overheating, and it shut off." Good luck kiddo.

Take it in to a Sprint store that has a repair center. Act clueless. With no insurance you should only have to pay $35 since it's a software issue. You may even get a free replacement...I doubt that though.

Just as someone mentioned above when you buy your phone there is small window of time to buy insurance. After that time you cannot.
I've been having off and on issues with my E4GT screen and would like a replacement. Ive been living with it since february, but it's getting very annoying for such a beast of a phone. Is there any way I can switch it out and get a white one? I do have the tep insurance if it matters. I'm in the Dallas area. Please PM me if you think you can help
Chances are they'll send whatever refurb is next in line.

Since they are two foretaste model numbers, they will send whatever is attached to your account. Your best bet would be going to a local store and trying to persuade a rep to help you out... But chances are you'll be leaving with the same model that is on your account.
Good luck

I'm doing this same thing. My wife wants a white one now so I'm trying to figure something out.
I figure if I throw enough of a fit about how Sprint owes my a** something in order to make up for their lack of any mentionable data speeds while I still pay every month for 'premium data' - a white E4GT swap for my wife is the least they can do.
Otherwise I'll just cancel my contract with no ETF due to them failing to hold up their end of the contract. Or they can upgrade us both to a SGSIII when it comes out so I can have the speeds I was promised with LTE and 1x Advanced.
All I need is a tech!! I spoke to a 3rd party sprint rep and they said it can be switched with either, its basically up to the tech. Is there any one at all in the Dallas area that would like to help a fellow XDAer out? (i would be more than happy to bring a donation to a cause of their choosing )
btw I do have the ted insurance, so would that provide any help in getting a white replacement more easily? I dont want to pay the $100, but im almost willing to at this point. hence the "donation" not being an issue
I need help with this too but I live in NJ :/

I already told you what you need to do.
You also have to remember that being a technician is our job, not strictly our hobby. We have to adhere to policies. I personally wouldn't swap you just because you asked, my SRSS frowns upon that.
The best thing to do is bite the bullet, drive to the store, and take whatever is given to you.
I understand what youve told me, however it is difficult for me to leave the office again and go through the hours of bs just to end up with someone looking at the thing for 20 min and saying nothing is wrong or I need to get a battery (yes, someone told me my screen and buttons malfunctioned due to my battery). This is not the first time I have done this and I am fed up to say the least. I know more about these devices and this network than 80% of the people working at the stores I've gone to.
Replacing the device is the hard part and the color change is a bird id like to kill with the same stone. All I was looking for was assistance from a fellow member to stream line things and get me the customer service that Sprint should be striving for. God knows their data speeds and innovation aren't going to save them.
I'm sorry for the rant, it was not directed at you. Ive been calling Sprint for weeks about separate issues and I was trying to take this issue on by myself. If it comes down to it I will bite the bullet and deal with them the old fashion way, but that is my last resort
Depending in what custom ROM you're running (sorry just assuming since you're on xda, if not it doesn't matter) if you type *#0*#0 on the dialer it brings up a diagnostic menu. One of the tests in this menu is a line drawing test for the touchscreen. If you can see it consistently messing up in a certain part of the screen that's one of the easiest tests we have to verify touchscreen issues and a good way to make sure the tech you talk to isn't just going to say sorry we can't verify the issue. And as much as it can suck if we can't reliably duplicate the issue our options are pretty limited as far as repair/replacement goes.
As for the color issue, I may be in the minority but if I have the parts in and someone comes in and asks nicely, I don't mind swapping what color someones screen/housing is of there's actually a problem

An easy way to tell, for me, is dragging down notification bar, if it gets really choppy in a certain area, then you definitely have a spot that's out. Doesn't always work, but easy to tell. The dio menu, I am pretty sure it only works on completely stock roms with EL29, I have not tried on any ICS leaks though. I am currently running CM, so obviously, doesn't work lol.

I have had a Sprint rep tell me that a charging issue that my old Hero had was due to a bad cable. So I bought a new cable(not from sprint) and had the same problem. Took it back and they said it was the battery. So I bought a new battery(not from sprint), and had the same issue(returned the battery after. The last issue they said was that the charging port was loose, but they didn't want to fix it because they didn't want to ruin the internals of the phone.
I have hardly ever gotten good service by a rep in a Sprint store. I have gotten good service over the phone though.

Or they can upgrade us both to a SGSIII when it comes out so I can have the speeds I was promised with LTE and 1x Advanced.

hahahahaha..
I'd cancel your contract in a heartbeat.
It's a cell phone, there is no reason to have a sense of entitlement. If you don't like your data speeds or whatever, cut ship and go elsewhere. But don't even try that bull****.
If you really want a white one shove a flat head in your charging port and break the pins ( made me cringe when I seen my buddy do it) automatically a replacement cause we can't fix them. Then go to a 3rd party preferred retailer and when they go to order it just ask nicely for a white one. As long as you have TEP is all free

I hard bricked my SIII the other day and the phone us completely dead. When I plug it into a computer I hear the connection sound and the disconnection sound and when my battery is taken out the LED lights up red and goes away in about a minute. Can't get into recovery or download mode. I called Samsung and they said they will flash it to stock for free. My phone was rooted. Does anyone know if they will be able to find out if my phone was rooted considering the thing is completely dead?

If you cannot get into any mode they will more than likely just jtag it into download and flash a factory image.
To answer your question, no they wont. I did the same thing and TEP with Sprint and got a brand new phone in box the next day. No charge to me and they never came back even though it was rooted.

That would definitely have to be the case.
Thanks guys!! The SIII is a truly awesome phone and I am actually going crazy because after using that phone for so long, every other phone just sucks and doesn't compare to that of the SIII. I am taking it to the UPS Office on Monday and hopefully i can get it back soon. My life pretty much revolves around that phone. It's sad, i know, but i cant help it lol

What i was saying is go to a repair sprint store, as long as you have TEP, and they will look at it for less than 5 minutes, determine they cant do anything and order you a new one, so you dont directly deal with Samsung. Thats what I did. I just played dumb lol
Flashed an International ROM. I was being dumb. But; I guess you learn from your mistakes. Read read read read READ is what you do in order to avoid a hard brick. That's the lesson I learned

Yeah, it is quicker to TEP the phone and get a new one the next day, but it's also much more expensive ($150 vs. $60). Which one is "better" really depends on your situation. If you have the money and can't wait for a repair (due to work, family, etc), the $150 deductible (and one-day turnaround) is a great option. If money is tight (as it is for a lot of us), the 10 days is much more palatable than the extra $90.
To each his own, I say.

Does anyone have experience with what happens when you return a rooted device to Asurion?
I dropped my GN2 from 8' onto asphalt and over the course of the next few hours the contusion spread over the display. In the morning the display was completely black and unusable.
I put in a claim with Asurion, paid the $175 and received my new one the next day -- thank you Asurion.
Now when I send my old one back, does anyone know if they'll see it was rooted and charge me a whole lot more money?
If so, should I drive over it a couple of times and really destroy it?
(Hypothetically, of course -- I would never engage in any kind of fraudulent activity...)
Thanks in advance.
You should be just fine, but why not just Odin it to stock real quick. Pull the battery hold volume down, home and power you're in download mode.

You are returning a broken phone on an insurance claim. I wouldn't bother about it and return the phone as is.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
i always crush with brick if i had to return a broken phone so no recovery or salvage can be done.

T-Mobile warranty vs insurance.
All 3 of our phones have gone crazy. Our SGSII's lost all signal after updraging them to CM10.1.2. My phone, GSN2 went down when I tried to install tweaked 2.3 from CM10.1 Nightlies, complete brick.
Called tmo about an hour ago. Got my problems taken care of. Mon or Tues I'll have all 3 replaced at no charge. How? Call and talk to Customer Loyalty, not customer service!
Customer Loyalty's whole job is to keep you happy, so bully them into getting what you WANT!

That's not cool, you screw up flashing your phone and expect T Mobile to replace it. That's why flashing and rooting voids your warranty. To top off being a douche you bully the customer service reps, such class. You screw up, man up and take responsibility for your actions and pay for your f*** up.

Did I insult you somewhere along the line? To my knowlege, I haven't. I have though, been rooting since the moto backflip, so don't accuse me of things that you have no idea of.
Actually, I do think that I did something wrong when reloading tweaked 2.3 after a lot of lagging, fc's, various crashes and such. Wanted to get everything from the phone, so I wiped everything including the internal card just in case (backed everything up to pc and external sdcard) I also have a long history with t-mobile.
When by talking aggressively to the loyalty agent, he knew the whole story, I told him. On the other 2 phones, I just checked and I had those phones stock, not CM. They lost signal after stock update to C6. Have been checking and I'm seeing posts on losing signal not data, exactly what the sgs2 have been doing.

I don't expect anything in life. 15 months ago I received a liver transplant, and recently overhearing my dr's talking about putting me back on the transplant list. Our moral codes may
differ, but I have to have a phone constantly. ...
Actually I would be on your side before all of the health issues.

Actually, I did 'pay' for my mistakes. I paid the $5 each she said it would cost me. Sounds like I did 'pay' for my mistake. When I called I was expecting a bill of $525.00, as that is what is in the insurance papers. I always have my facts straight when I call.
Next time have all the facts, please.
I always love these threads.
"hAlp i broke it"
"just warranty it on the internet bro"
"^what? are you some kind of internet dirt bag or something? you are the reason why we have expensive internet phone bills and why kids starve in china DIAF on the internet"
"bro did i offend you or something on the internet? pretty sure i didn't. no need to go all e warrior and be disrespectful to me on the internet
and furthermore i have a full time job on the internet and have kids on the internet"
Don't feel sorry for getting a one up on cellular networks.... they don't feel sorry for you when they screw you over.
Thats what I dont understand ...
Youre paying X amount of $$ for INSURANCE so use it. Asurion pockets all this money and still ask for a damn deductable. I dont even have a deductable for my Car Insurance.
So if going with the insurance, do whatever you like with your phone.
But, if going through Warranty then be sure its stock as possible.

Insurance is for messing up no matter what, rooting, bricking, dropping. Warranty not equal insurance
I've done warranty 2x now both rooted with custom rom. Nothing ever said never had a problem. They will send you an email just telling you that they received your broken decide and thank you. Your good

OP here:
thanks for your replies to my original post everybody.
I love this place. (XDA)
OP did you end up sending back in a way they could see you were rooted? I dropped mine and have to do an asurion claim but i dont want any grief. I pay them enough money and this extra $175.
Also, my phone went swimming in the North Platte River with me drunk one night (the phone was drunk, not me) in a seperate incident, is that going to matter?
Last question, will I get a phone faster if I say this one doesnt work?
