I hard bricked my SIII the other day and the phone us completely dead. When I plug it into a computer I hear the connection sound and the disconnection sound and when my battery is taken out the LED lights up red and goes away in about a minute. Can't get into recovery or download mode. I called Samsung and they said they will flash it to stock for free. My phone was rooted. Does anyone know if they will be able to find out if my phone was rooted considering the thing is completely dead?

If you cannot get into any mode they will more than likely just jtag it into download and flash a factory image.
To answer your question, no they wont. I did the same thing and TEP with Sprint and got a brand new phone in box the next day. No charge to me and they never came back even though it was rooted.

That would definitely have to be the case.
Thanks guys!! The SIII is a truly awesome phone and I am actually going crazy because after using that phone for so long, every other phone just sucks and doesn't compare to that of the SIII. I am taking it to the UPS Office on Monday and hopefully i can get it back soon. My life pretty much revolves around that phone. It's sad, i know, but i cant help it lol

What i was saying is go to a repair sprint store, as long as you have TEP, and they will look at it for less than 5 minutes, determine they cant do anything and order you a new one, so you dont directly deal with Samsung. Thats what I did. I just played dumb lol

Yeah, it is quicker to TEP the phone and get a new one the next day, but it's also much more expensive ($150 vs. $60). Which one is "better" really depends on your situation. If you have the money and can't wait for a repair (due to work, family, etc), the $150 deductible (and one-day turnaround) is a great option. If money is tight (as it is for a lot of us), the 10 days is much more palatable than the extra $90.
To each his own, I say.

Try to put your phone in download mode, using the key combination (volume up/volume down) at the same time, then plug in your USB cable that will put you in download mode, and then use Odin to flash Bubby stock kernel. If you have access to recovery, (volume up/volume down/power) and let go the power as soon you can see the Samsung logo, then just flash the last ROM you were using before your mistake. This is if you already have a ROM that you can flash via CWM in the SDCARD of your phone. If you don't have a CWM ROM in your SD Card ODIN is your best friend. Hope this can help you.

Normally I wouldn't answer, because this question should be posted in the Q&A board, not here, but....
You hardbricked. WHen you try to turn on the device, you just get a solid blue LED, right? That's a hardbrick. Most likely because you did not follow the instructions in the OP telling you DO NOT FLASH ROM/KERNEL FROM ANY ICS RECOVERY. Only flash from EL26 StockCWM
If you have device insurance you can get Sprint to replace it, so long as you don't tell them HOW you killed it If you DON'T pay for insurance, it'll cost $35 to replace.
Moral of the story? READ THE OP. TWICE.
well my bad thanx no way to get it to turn on

Most of this is true. However, Sprint doesn't care HOW the phone gets bricked. I work for a Tech Store in Buffalo. If any tech/rep tells you that they won't replace a rooted/attempted root phone, call them a liar. Tell them to check Sprint's M&P's (methods and procedures).
That being said, rooting STILL voids your warranty, but Sprint is supposed to work on them. Chances are we just flash stock and work on it from there.

I manage some repair shops. Last one I saw, last Wednesday, I couldn't get it going. I only had about an hour to mess with it, but I couldn't get anything to work. I wouldn't say I had completely given up, but given my resources at the store, it wasn't happening. Neither of the 2 computers we use in the tech room would recognize the device in Odin mode (while it read other Touches in Odin mode just fine). It would recognize the device if you booted regular and let it sit on the Galaxy S screen, but flashing wouldn't work and it would never advance past that screen. We just ordered a replacement for the guy. He had flashed a ROM from an ICS kernel.
Only problems I've had on mine is losing signal and the phone going into Airplane mode on rare occasions. Power button menu will actually say it's in airplane mode, too. Turning it off usually fixes things. My phone did have LOS problem initially, but that went away once Samsung updated the modem awhile back. So, it does seem that I end up in low signal situations now and again. Currently running the FC05 modem.

Oh if its hard bricked, we don't lol. I guess my point was more that if you bring a rooted phone into a sprint store, Mr. Hesse says we have to work on it or replace it if there's no physical or liquid damage

Because technically you voided your warranty by flashing software to your phone... It says that everywhere there is a big difference between rooted and custom firmware.... That would be why most everyone has a USB jig to reset the flash count in download mode ....
If they can prove you had ics on it they really don't have to do anything but flag your phone as warranty void

Their system reported that it was running stock EL29 (from a rep when I asked), the ODIN flash count was zero, and it reported that it was running official Samsung firmware. I could only get a vague answer pertaining to "microcode" when I asked them to prove it.

Glad to hear you're getting a replacement. I'd been think about this microcode thing, ever since you posted about it in the other thread.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcode
I have a feeling the tech was using the word "microcode" as a synonym for the phone's firmware, taking the stance that the only way for the firmware to get wiped was if you manually flashed your phone. They're replacing your phone because 1) they really can't prove you rooted and flashed it, and the microcode thing was bull**** and 2) at the end of the day, they have to replace your phone anyways under warranty if you didn't drop it in the toilet.
If Sprint techs had some other way to identify that a phone had been manually flashed, other than the known methods, I'm quite sure the good folks at XDA would already know about it.
I already know its a hard brick, no odin, no recovery, no hope. I was wondering if anyone has worked for sprint and would know if I dont have insurance, and just now get insurance, and then bring it in and act clueless saying I dont know what happened yadda yadda yadda, would they give me a new phone?

I personally don't work at Sprint, but if you play dumb and you make up a good enough excuse, their's an 85% chance that they'll give you a new one. I mean since it isn't physical damage, you're in luck. I say i's worth a shot. My E4GT is at Sprint right now, I completely reverted it back to stock and they had no clue on what was going on with it and they decided to give a new one. Just try it. Just lie and say something like "It was overheating, and it shut off." Good luck kiddo.

Take it in to a Sprint store that has a repair center. Act clueless. With no insurance you should only have to pay $35 since it's a software issue. You may even get a free replacement...I doubt that though.

I really want to put Jelly Bean on my phone, long story short. I got my new nexus from Verizon totally unaware about the radio problems.

So basically I have two questions.
1. Will flashing a rom on my phone fix my network dilemma?
And
2. Can someone please post a link to most reliable how to guide on how to flash my Verizon Nexus and possibly the most reliable rom?
Thank you xda community!
That sounds hardware related. Might want to get an exchange before hand. See if the new one will help. Don't think jelly bean will help a defective radio.

So you believe its hardware related? Its a brand new phone and I want to take the right steps to fix it. I figured it was software but if its hardware related obviously there's nothing I can do. Will I be offered a new phone or a refurbished?
I also got it through best buy, not sure if it makes a difference.

Its probably best that you got it from best buy they have great exchange policies. So this happens in stock correct? I would say that's pretty hardware related. I don't think an unofficial software upgrade would fix that. Unless there are better radios. I'm not too sure as I have the sprint nexus. Hopefully somebody with a big red version will chime in.

Flashing will not fix this hardware issue. Please return it and request a new one. My brother got one yesterday, and best buy was trying to give him **** about how its Verizon's ****ty service. Got a new one and works great now. I got lucky and mine worked out of the box.
Edit: I suggest playing with before you leave the store too, so many defective devices I'm honestly baffled no one has sued. Its ridiculous.

Thanks! I was highly considering this, I got the phone as a gift and I thought it was weird that I got the phone with the battery dead. Phone is hard bricked. I didn't realize it until CWM was telling me "HEY IDIOT THIS ROM ISN"T FOR YOUR PHONE".... anyway it doesn't turn on, the screen doesn't come on or anything. The only life i get out of it is when I unplug it from my computer i hear a noise. NOT EVEN WHEN I PLUG IT IN. Odin doesn't recognize it or anything.
I will be visiting Sprint tomorrow and going to play it dumb saying IDK WHATS GOING ON. THE PHONE WONT TURN ON!?!?
When they get the phone back will they know that I bricked it?.. Like the flash counters and everything on it?
Wow, just wow, you don't have to go and play dumb, I'm guessing they will know that right away.

Let this be a lesson.
I'm all for giving someone a hard time for bricking their phone but I think y'all are being a little too harsh on the guy I mean he's not blaming anyone else and he did call himself an idiot in his post and he's not asking for some cure all solution
Give the man a break I'm sure he learned a lesson without you guys heckling him
Edit: and he's just asking if they'll know that he bricked his phone, I don't see what's so wrong with that

Fraud. That's what his intentions are. Which will impact us all.

Isn't bricking covered by insurance?
If he pays the deductible then yes, he can make a claim with the insurance. Playing dumb and having Sprint replace for $35 (or whatever it is) is being fraudulent.
OP, you have sort of stepped up and sort of owned the mistake. Sort of unless you pay the deductible or buy out right. Otherwise even that "sort of" is negated.
Own it, pay it.

Tell me you never dropped a burger and then took it and said it was poorly made or something to that effect
If he has insurance then they'll cover it with a deductible, if he doesn't then they won't right? Just let the man be

Never, if it drop my burger I go buy a new one. But i have never dropped my burger and if I couldn't afford another I blow it off and eat it.
Also let me point out if you have insurance on your car and get into an accident they fix it that's what you pay insurance. If you crash your car into a tree to collect money it's called insurance fraud they don't pay and have the right to prosecute.

I just made up an example i don't know what's so upsetting about all this to you we've all committed some level of fraud because we felt dumb.

No, I can say I haven't. I was brought up and taught to take ownership of my mistakes and learn from them, not pass the buck.
Believe it is called character.
Pull your battery out, put back, hold volume down, keep holding v down, after 3 or 4 seconds, press & hold power button for about a sec & release while still holding volume down. Hopefully your splash screen will pop up. Make sure you use the volume up/down to pick boot into recovery & press power to select. Good luck.

I think the correlation is not really accurate.
When you drop your burger, that's accidental and most restaurants will absorb the cost of that one burger because gaining a repeat customer is worth more than that one meal. If you stare the manager in the eye and purposefully drop the burger and demand another one, they'll laugh as they kick you to the curb.
On the other hand, when someone flashes a ROM, they have to know that they are voiding their claim on the warranty. It's a deliberate thing. The OP's phone didn't boot itself into recovery and try to flash an international ROM. The OP made the choice to root and flash ROMs, therefore any issues caused by said flashing is his responsibility. Not Sprint's. Not Samsung's. OP's responsibility.
And the solution to the problem is a simple JTAG procedure. The cost of $60 is a small price to pay in order to learn a valuable lesson: be 100% sure of what you're flashing prior to flashing it.
Edit: And the fact that there is a cost is really important. The retention of these type of lessons is directly proportional to the price paid. If there's no price paid ('cause he played dumb and got a free phone), then the lesson's impact will be negligible.

They will know what you did. Should just buy a used phone off Craigslist or eBay. Going through insurance playing stupid just makes Sprint hike up prices for everyone else. Next time read before you flash something.

First off everyone needs to stop all the ignorant nonsense about returning a phone through the insurance will jack up prices on Sprint. It's really just sad that you don't understand a thing about how the business works.
Asurion is the company that handles the phone insurance for Sprint, they are not owned by Sprint nor are they ran by Sprint. Asurion is the phone insurance company for 15 other Carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, Boost, T-Mobile, etc... They make tons of money for every single person on those carriers who pay the monthly premium to insure their phones. Multiply that ludicrous amount by 12 for each month and you'll see they can easily bankroll their insurance operation, becuase 100% of those people don't necessarily have issues with their phones.
Dead phones are usually sent back to the manufacturer and fixed/replaced and those are called Refurbs. Refurbs are usually what Asurion provides back as a replacement phone.
As to the OP's phone, I've had a similar issue happen to me and it wasn't due to flashing a ROM at all, the internal memory failed and it wasn't due to flashing. I took my phone to Sprint, which I have flash many roms on prior, and they couldn't do a thing to the phone, nor did they know I flashed it or whether or not it had a custom rom on it. It was DOA.
I paid ZERO deductible and got a new phone in 3 days and nobody's ass got hurt in the process, so all you Sprint Price Jacker conspiracy theorist need to get some sleep, preferably with your tin hats on.
OP, just take your phone in, if you have insurance or not Sprint will help you out. Just like the friggin' burger example, they'll help you out if you drop your burger.
