Flashing to Jelly Bean questions - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I really want to put Jelly Bean on my phone, long story short. I got my new nexus from Verizon totally unaware about the radio problems.
My phone constantly drops service then picks it up. No matter how much I tweak my phone
I
So basically I have two questions.
1. Will flashing a rom on my phone fix my network dilemma?
And
2. Can someone please post a link to most reliable how to guide on how to flash my Verizon Nexus and possibly the most reliable rom?
Thank you xda community!

That sounds hardware related. Might want to get an exchange before hand. See if the new one will help. Don't think jelly bean will help a defective radio.

So you believe its hardware related? Its a brand new phone and I want to take the right steps to fix it. I figured it was software but if its hardware related obviously there's nothing I can do. Will I be offered a new phone or a refurbished?
I also got it through best buy, not sure if it makes a difference.

Its probably best that you got it from best buy they have great exchange policies. So this happens in stock correct? I would say that's pretty hardware related. I don't think an unofficial software upgrade would fix that. Unless there are better radios. I'm not too sure as I have the sprint nexus. Hopefully somebody with a big red version will chime in.

Thanks a lot for your input. I'll just go to best buy and try to solve this problem through an exchange.

Flashing will not fix this hardware issue. Please return it and request a new one. My brother got one yesterday, and best buy was trying to give him **** about how its Verizon's ****ty service. Got a new one and works great now. I got lucky and mine worked out of the box.
Edit: I suggest playing with before you leave the store too, so many defective devices I'm honestly baffled no one has sued. Its ridiculous.

Thanks! I was highly considering this, I got the phone as a gift and I thought it was weird that I got the phone with the battery dead. It turns out that its been the radio making my phone hot and killing my battery. My phone gets 4 hrs battery life and holds a signal for like 2 mins at a time, I can't believe best buy employees don't catch it

Yup, I guarantee if you look at the battery stats and in it, you'll see cell standby. I bet its used up 30%+ when normally its suppose to use 2%.
It is odd that they don't catch this.. hell even Samsung. Why are there so many defective devices?

Intermittent signal

Alright, I've had my phone for just over a year and this problem has been getting worse and worse... (I've been rooted and flashed different roms throughout the time - and no difference)
Most of the time I get great reception with the phone. However there are a few areas (aka my house) that it's a lower signal and it creates this problem.
People on the other end can hear me (for the most part), but I get extreme clipping (think the drivethrough speaker, but worse!)
I've tried different modems and prls, and nothing really changes. I've called up sprint and they have no suggestions. Once they did a provisioning, and that helped for a week or so.
Today I tried something new. Before I made a call, I toggled Airplane mode off/on. When I made the call right after, it was fine. But try doing that when your getting an incoming call!
My wife also has an epic (rooted and with a few different roms), but she does not have this problem. I really don't want to return it to Best Buy, because I'm afraid that I'll get a refurb.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Seems like you have a bad radio someone had a similar problem not quite as bad but go to sprint and ask if they'll test the radio on the cell and it should fail and they'll fix it for you.

Also I have terrible signal in my house but clear as day voice so your radio may be limited with low signal and bad.

bigg is right. plus, a refurbished phone is not always bad. a refurbished phone actually goes through more quality tests than new ones, especially to make sure the bugs are worked out.

Well I guess I'm glad I have the insurance after all. How recent was your latest replacement?
Also, how was the process? I mean, for something that's obviously not physical damage like a cracked screen or something, do they just give u a new phone right then and there? Or do you have to wait for them to send it away for service/testing...?
I guess you did a factory reset beforehand - right?

It was my 2nd phone on the account, my GFs and each time I go to Best Buy they don't even question it. Even if PRL won't update. They have Rapid Exchange, just did one 4 weeks ago. They take the bad phone and either loan you a Blackberry or bring in a phone you might still have, then 2 days later the new phone arrives and they swap it back.

New GN froze had to pull battery...No big deal?

Hi everyone,
New GN,
ITLF41
19250UGKL1
yakjuux
4.01
I've only unlocked it, haven't done anything else.
I was only replying to a text message and in the middle of text, GN froze and the screen went black with a white line across top of screen.
Seemed to occur while the auto-rotate function was trying to rotate screen.
I also noticed the auto rotate on my GN does not work well at all. Sometimes it does, sometimes it will not no matter how long I wait.
Nothing worked, had to pull battery.
Seems fine after replacing battery.
I wouldn't be concerned but for the fact that I was not using 3rd party apps or a different rom. The force 2d option is off.
Is maybe something funky with the GN auto-rotate feature in 4.01?

Yes, versions 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 fix a LOT of little issues with the GN. They really should've released the phone with one of those 2 versions rather than 4.0.1.
I don't think you should be too worried about battery pulls unless they happen more often than you like.
Just like a computer...rebooting or pulling the battery at least once a week is recommended!

I'm a Network Admin for a large School Board. I know its strange I know nothing about smart Phones but I do know much about Wireless/Routers/switches and Computers.
If your rebooting computers once a week something is amiss....lol
I have servers and clients that have uptimes of 1 year+ before an update requires me to down a server or re-image a client.
In my case, if what had happened to my NEW GN happened on one of my OES2 Linux servers, Id be scrambling until the issue was found and fixed and i'd be none to happy.
But alas, a server is not a cell phone.
I hope it was a just a freak isolated incident.

I work for tmobile, at&t and Verizon! I've dealt with dumb little bugs that people have....pulling the battery is the first thing I tell them to do and 99% of the time, it fixes their bug! So why not just save yourself the time and be one step ahead of the phone!?

One very simple reason: If you pull the battery in a bad moment, e.g. right when the hardware is writing something to the Flash memory, you might (soft-) brick your phone and lose all the data on it.

Well because,
If I have to keep pulling the battery (which is NOT occurring thankfully so far) then I would say something is wrong and its not just a software bug. I would call it a blue screen of death in computer terms.
That could be anything from a hardware fault (Memory/CPU/IO sub system..etc) That would for me, mean taking it back.
A hard reset may temporarily fix the issue. But it doesn't solve the underlying problems.
I'm hoping the error was a one off. If it never occurs again, then we're good to go.
If it does, its goin back.
Same thing happened to me, the weird thing is it happened right after I completely reset the phone...

Yea its strange...
In my case the Auto rotate feature seems to be the common theme for funkyness.
Sometimes its quick, less than a second, sometimes it doesn't move at all.....
Then, a hard lock.
I realize that 4.02 and .03 fix some bugs but I have the Canadian ver. and google is not gonna update OTA for my NG.
I'm not ready for the whole, flash to "google's" stock rom yet. I just learned to unlock it...lol. If it locks again i'll try that. If it don't i'll leave well enough alone.
Oh by the way, to the Admins, sorry for not posting in the Q&A section. I though i was in the Q&A, my mistake.
Please by all means move the thread.

Actually, I have to replace cmos batteries all the time.
Usually they are good for 4 or 5 years but sometimes not.
Some people don't know what "Hit F1 to continue" means and I get calls all the time.
So yes, its quite common to have to pull a bad battery when dealing with 2,000+ PC's ...

Because I use a otterbox with my Galaxy Nexus and it's not very pleasent to keep taking my phone out of it's hard shell case and putting it back in?
Pulling the battery is always a last resort. If the phone is frozen, that is fine to pull the battery or you can hold power on the phone and it'll turn off by itself (not sure if this is in the GN but it was in Galaxy S1).

You are correct. Its not a common everyday thing for most.
I was just suggesting a legit reason for why anyone would need to pull a computer battery.
On another note, i agree with you that having an otterbox case makes it even more of a pain to have to pull the battery.
I just had another freeze up while trying to get back to the main page using the launcher.
Im getting worried now. I've had this phone for 2 weeks and it was great until today....
I think I'm gonna bring it back to virgin just to be safe before my 30 days is up.
If its just software then the new one will do it as well but at at least I'll know thats what it is and either wait for samsung updates or update manually.
Again....nowhere in my response did I say u HAVE to pull the battery every week....I simply said its best if u do, nobody is gonna force u to! But when u do get a bug...pull that battery, and if it keeps happening, send it for warranty...simple

VZW GNex. Will getting a replacement fix this?

So I'm one of the unfortunate users that has the stupid mic muting issue. I've just been dealing with it and waiting to see if a update from vzw ends up fixing it. Well, it's been five months and still no update. I rooted my phone immediately after the first time I ran into the problem. I'm on the 4.0.4 radio now and it's still there.
So has anybody had luck switching out devices? It sucks because my screen is beautiful and the call muting issue is the only one I have. Should I go through the hassle of getting a replacement?
Edit* crap, can a mod move this to q/a.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
I've never had this issue on my LTE GNex. I don't believe its a common issue. I would definitely get it replaced.
what exactly happens that mutes it, and for how long? does it happen when you are not holding the phone?
reason i ask, is the microphone is a tiny hole on the bottom of the phone, and if you hold the phone like many do, with a finger underneath, even slightly blocking this hole will completely mute the microphone out.

To all Verizon Galaxy Nexus users who have no idea what issue we are talking about, read the following:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24019
It basically happens on full signal (with LTE and/or CDMA turned off and on), stationary or moving, under bluetooth + speaker + ear piece while physically holding the phone or not, makes our voice turn into a choppy robotic sound and we can hear them but the other party can't hear me.
Only resolution to this problem is hang up and call again.
There is a huge variation among devices, some has this issue as soon as 5 seconds into a phone call, some have it well into 15 mins or even 40 mins into a call. Some happens basically on every other call, some happens once in a bluemoon.
Yes, we've all tried every single ROMs and radios. And yes, we are not holding it wrong to cover our mic with our finger tips.
And yes, it is not user error because it happened to all 2 new gnex and 2 refurbished replacements STOCK without any apps on it. I got mine to happened on pretty much the entire state of california (I travel very frequently from SoCal to NorCal)
The only reason a few might not face this issue is simply because 1) either they picked the cream of the crop out of all these affected devices 2) not using the GNex as a phone as much as some of us do.
I simply do not use GNex for business purposes...
To OP, getting a replacement might help a little but no promises.
Man I'd have replaced it long ago. I would imagine it's hardware related or they would've pushed an OTA to fix it. I read somewhere that Verizon stated an update would be sent out that would fix it, but I'm not buying it.

Yeah I'm just scared to swap it out and receive one with a ****ty screen. Plus I have a invisible shield on here. And there's no guarantee it will be resolved. Has anyone had any luck with swapping them out? I really don't want to switch to a different phone. I've waited for a nexus device to hit verizon for so long.

Ya know, honestly, I'm not all that impressed with the phone. I've only had it a couple weeks, but it doesn't do anything better than the Epic 4G Touch that I came from. The E4GT was awesome, the Sprint network, not so much. The camera and battery life were just so much better and I'm struggling with that.

Gotcha Bro

I just got off the phone with VZW about this very issue. They said they have a release tentatively scheduled for May, but "tentatively" could end up being August. It's a known issue so, there's no workaround for it and getting a replacement probably won't help.
The only thing they could possibly offer is switching to another device altogether. Spec-wise, the Galaxy Nexus is at the top for me so I don't want another phone. (frustration)
Alas, depending on what's important to you, you may just be better off waiting for the update. :-(

I know it's kind of a old thread but wanted to update my experiences.
I am on my second replacement now and I'm sticking with it. I've had the issue maybe 3 times in the month I've had it. My first replacement had a terrible screen, crappy signal, and the muting issue happened just as frequently as before if not more.
I'm assuming this will never be spoken of by Samsung since we've already had the phone almost a year with no acknowledgement. I just hope the next nexus is a different manufacturer (HTC especially) since every Samsung phone I've had has had issues with the actual phone part. My first being the fascinate and now this. Especially since if I want to upgrade from now on ill end up paying full price.

I have had the same problem.
I've gone through 2 replacements and still the same issues have occurred. The update that was supposed to fix this was released in May and it fixed nothing. I called Verizon several times asking what will be done about this. Their answer is that another update will fix this. I frankly don't believe it.
Verizon also told me that Samsung is aware and they're "actively" working on a fix.
Being that I use this phone to make business calls, I can't have a phone that I can't depend on. Their answer: We can give you the RAZR. Not the RAZR Maxx - the RAZR.
I said that won't work because the RAZR doesn't compare to my phone as far as specs go. It's worth 200 less than my phone on their website.
The only phone that compares to mine is the Galaxy S3. Not to mention, I flat-out don't like the RAZR (or the RAZR Maxx). They said they couldn't give me the S3 because the phone was just released.
So, in short, I'm VERY upset with Verizon, because I don't feel like I'm being treated fairly. I'm willing to wait for this so called fix they will push out since my warranty is until December and they claim they'll get it right this time. But if this doesn't work....well, I feel sorry for whichever Customer Rep catches my evil side lol.
Yeah they are gonna get an earful tomorrow when I call. I've had the phone maybe 18 days and it didn't start this until day 11 and ever since its been non stop. I don't think any of us should suffer through calling 10-15 times per 30 minute conversation.

Exact same story they told me. I'm in my 5th device. 1st one camera broke completely and signal issues. 2nd one screen had a nasty yellow tint on half the screen. 3rd one had the worst screen I had ever seen. I wish I would have taken pictures to show. 4th one was great till the ear speaker completely went out and the speaker broke. 5th one that I currently have has a beautiful screen with no issues so far.

[Q] GPS not working, never did.. Now what?!?!

Didn't want this to be my first post, but whats up.. Just coming from a Verizon Droid X , I love this phone EXCEPT the fact that the GPS just doesn't work.. I didn't even notice until after I flashed CM10 the first day. It find's 20+ satellites with the GPS status app, it just NEVER locks on to any of them and in Maps my phone thinks I am in N.C. when i'm in NYC.. I tried flashing other ROMS, I tried different kernels, I tried flashing a GPS fix through CWM I found here on XDA, I even tried flashing back to the stock OTA and kernel via Odin.. I've tried everything and still NOTHING!!! I bought the phone new in the box from a dude on Craigslist so I can't exactly take it to AT&T since I have no warranty and I am using Straight Talk (which kinda sux btw)... Not really sure what to do, i'm usually good at troubleshooting but i'm stuck.. Any advice would be super welcome!! Thanks.. I feel like such a n00b hahaha!!!
Just call samsung . They'll take care of you

I would have to agree, if the GPS radios aren't working on stock it sounds like you have a bum device. If the problem is that severe it shouldn't be any problem to reproduce at the store where you purchased to device to have it replaced under warranty.
Yupp, thanks guys.. I think i'm gonna take it back to an AT&T store and see what they can do for me.. Only thing is I tripped the flash counter, its on 2 right now. I understand Triangle Away app takes care of that which I downloaded, but I don't know if I need to be rooted to run that app. I'm back to full stock unrooted right now.. Does anyone know??
As i have never used the app I can't say for sure that it requires root, although i do suspect it would. Certainly its worth the extra 15 minutes or so to root the device, triangle away, and then flash back to stock if it is going to cost you a warranty claim on an obvious hardware defect that is no fault of your own :good:.
Awesome.. Well I reverted back to stock and derooted. I then take it to an AT&T service center to replace, but they tell me they can't because I don't have an AT&T number.. I'm using Straight Talk but it runs on AT&T networks, whats the difference. It was payed for full price 3 weeks before at an AT&T store!!! Bunch of jerks.. Guess i'm stuck calling Samsung themselves, lets see where this one goes..
btw, they say that yes it has defective hardware.. Awesome I got the broken one!!! Just my luck...

I didnt notice the part about craigslist the first time i read your post, ouch...that sucks man. I'm not sure how the manufacturer warranty works with multiple owners, but the hardware is covered for a year through them...maybe leave out the part about craigslist hey.

Hard Bricked My SIII

I hard bricked my SIII the other day and the phone us completely dead. When I plug it into a computer I hear the connection sound and the disconnection sound and when my battery is taken out the LED lights up red and goes away in about a minute. Can't get into recovery or download mode. I called Samsung and they said they will flash it to stock for free. My phone was rooted. Does anyone know if they will be able to find out if my phone was rooted considering the thing is completely dead?

If you cannot get into any mode they will more than likely just jtag it into download and flash a factory image.
To answer your question, no they wont. I did the same thing and TEP with Sprint and got a brand new phone in box the next day. No charge to me and they never came back even though it was rooted.

That would definitely have to be the case.
Thanks guys!! The SIII is a truly awesome phone and I am actually going crazy because after using that phone for so long, every other phone just sucks and doesn't compare to that of the SIII. I am taking it to the UPS Office on Monday and hopefully i can get it back soon. My life pretty much revolves around that phone. It's sad, i know, but i cant help it lol

What i was saying is go to a repair sprint store, as long as you have TEP, and they will look at it for less than 5 minutes, determine they cant do anything and order you a new one, so you dont directly deal with Samsung. Thats what I did. I just played dumb lol
Flashed an International ROM. I was being dumb. But; I guess you learn from your mistakes. Read read read read READ is what you do in order to avoid a hard brick. That's the lesson I learned

Yeah, it is quicker to TEP the phone and get a new one the next day, but it's also much more expensive ($150 vs. $60). Which one is "better" really depends on your situation. If you have the money and can't wait for a repair (due to work, family, etc), the $150 deductible (and one-day turnaround) is a great option. If money is tight (as it is for a lot of us), the 10 days is much more palatable than the extra $90.
To each his own, I say.
