[Q] help with upgrading.. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, i have a friend who wants me to make his desire bravo to jelly bean... after searching and reading for a while, i saw many many jb roms for the desire... any suggestions on what to use??

Keep searching and reading
Find the guides to s-off and root if you haven't already, partition your sdcard, then try a few Roms to find the right one for your friend.
Generally they're not as fast or stable as gb roms, but are still getting a lot of attention and development.
Good luck!

I would go for vj builds, cm based v5.41 is pretty stable and remarkably fast, I also like the slim v 2.0.

Of course it is a matter of taste...
But I have tried lots of jb roms and I would recommend AOKP VJ 4.2.2 Jelly Bean v2.2 because it is fast and has a great memory management.
If you like a little Xperia on your Desire, you could also try RSK TEAM ★ ORIOLA Xperia Z★ with XPERIA Z LOCKSCREEN. It is also very smooth and stable.

A hboot is the partitioning of your internal memory. You have 3 internal partitions: /system, /cache and /data. Hboots change the space allocated for each. These are the Alpharev hboots (You can get them at alpharev.nl)
Hboot Name | /system /cache /data
Bravo Stock 250Mb 40Mb 147Mb
Bravo N1Table 145Mb 95Mb 197Mb
Bravo Data++ 180Mb 5Mb 252Mb
Bravo Sense 180Mb 40Mb 217Mb
Bravo Oxygen r2 100Mb 5Mb 332Mb
Bravo CM7 r2 145Mb 5Mb 287Mb
You now have the stock hboot, the first one. Changing hboot can help with increasing internal memory, like the CM7r2 hboot, which gives you 287mb of internal memory, instead of the stock 147mb.

okay... so they are two independent structures??
or you have to have this specific hboot for a specific rom??

With revolutionary. You have to be on either a stock rooted rom, or on cm7.

Also you need to have usb debugging enabled on the device before using Revolutionary. This is in the phone settings>app>development.
Hope this helps.

is there any download mirrors for the hboot driver besides the one at unrevoked? seems that the site is down today...

[Q]How to remove HBOOT from rom.zip?

I used AlphaRev to turn my Desire S-off,and now i want to upgrade my phone. On the AlphaRev site it's said that by removing HBOOT from rom.zip I can keep my phone S-off after upgrade, but i don't know how to do it.
Should i remove something from rom.zip? what files should be removed?Directly remove it and flash or i need to sign the rom again then flash?Need some special tools,or just need winrar?
Just flash a custom rom, upgrading with a ruu makes no sense when you are rooted and S-offed.
But I think official rom is the most stable one and it‘s prefect with S-off
It's stable but slow as balls like. Custom roms are developed better. Stock roms are all about "eye candy" stuff but if your wanting a stock rom, go ahead and get one. Just avoid running an RUU otherwise bye bye S-Off and you will need to root and S-Off again. That is just my opinion.
The Ruu won't be rooted (but you can root it), however if you like the stock rom find the prerooted rom in development or try leedroid.

What do you actually want to achieve? By the sound of your posts you want a custom ROM with Sense ?? Try Leedroid 2.3d it is custom with sense and very stable. Go for the version with +A2SD and format and partition your sdcard with 1GB Ext3 or Ext4 and the remainder as Fat32. Use PArted to do this in Linux base.
I can almost guarantee that you won't look back.

Why do people say LeeDroid is so good? I've never seen the attraction myself, prefer my own ROM tbh

Eddy,
You are a seasoned Androider so have probably tried most if not all of the custom ROMS. Our friend here seems a little lost about his objectives....hense my recommendation. It is a most stable ROM, much better than a stock rooted ROM and very good for him to use while he figures out exactly what it is that he wants.

Why does GB suffer from low RAM compared to Froyo

HTC is complaining that Desire can't fully run GB with Sennse because of low RAM.
Does this mean that GB uses more RAM than Froyo?
I think you got something wrong. Gingerbread uses less rAm (random access memory) than froyo. The problem was, that it uses more space for rOm (internal phone storage) than froyo. So they had to delete some sense apps to make gingerbread appropriate for the desire's internal storage.
so I just create an SD EXT partition and all is well again, right?

No, because with the official stock gingerbread you cannot use a2sd/a2sd+. Furthermore, you need root access to use a2sd/a2sd+. And you cannot root the official gingerbread yet.

you can, just extract ROM.zip from RUU and delete hboot (or boot) .img from it, then flash with PB99IMG method
but why do that either already a rooted stock or fully custom

[Q] Q. Confused... need someone to give clear answer...

Hi,
Just getting back into phone mods (used to own windows Touch HD) and recently did the HTC upgrade to gingerbread (which worked fine).
My problem is running out of space all the time... so I followed the instructions to use unrevoked tool (http://revolutionary.io/) to s-off the phone and install clockwork mod recovery.
But what now?
I would initially just want to have the official rom but be able to use the SD card for more space...
I am confused with talk of cm7r2 hboot, which rom to use, will the rom work with what I have and is my phone even rooted??
I don't suppose there is anyone out there that can spell out clearly my next steps??
Thanks in advance
First of all congrats that you have successfully managed to root and S-Off your phone..
Hboot is something that decides who your phone's internal memory is partitioned..for now you have stock hboot..which has partition like the following system 250MB cache 40MB data 147MB
Cm7r2 has system 145MB cache5MB 287MB
this is because requirement of Stock hboot based roms and Cm7r2 Roms are different..
My advice is for now you can used A2sd+ roms which can be installed on stock hboot with the help of recovery.
You will find roms over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
If you want basic Gingerbread rom try from Sense 1.9/2.1 (GingerBread): section
Also to use a2sd+ u need to partition your memory card..
you can find all details in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Hope it helps
Have I actually rooted the phone... I don't think I have???
Oif you read the revolutionary documentation, there is a zip to flash for root
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I think this is what I need... ROM] [20/08] Pre-rooted Stock Gingerbread (3.14.405.1) [Optional Mods]
I didn't use the zip to flash for root as was worried if there were different options...
It is SOOO confusing... need to keep reading!

[Q] Differences between STOCK hboot & CM7 hboot

Im new in rooting and currently using SupernovaRom..
I would like to switch my current rom to Sense 3.5's roms, but i realized that there are different download's link for stockhboot and cm7hboot.
Can someone tell me what are the differences and how to differentiate them??
Thank you very much.

Stock hboot has 250mb for /system and 145mb for /data. CM7 hboot has 145mb for /system and around 287mb for /data if I remember correctly. In short, CM7 hboot will enable you to install more apps than stock as you can only use the data partition to install apps.
More info about the different sizes of hboot can be found here. alpharev.nl

If you use the stock hboot version, many things will remain on /system partition.
If you use cm7 hboot version, many things of /system will be swaped out to an sd-ext partition.

Since I am new to rooting I d like to ask something myself. I use official 2.3.3 and I d like to root to get Supernova Extreme. But since I can only use the alpharev method I will S-Off my desire. Does this mean I have to use CM7r2 or can I stick with stock Hboot? Which is best for this Rom? Thank you.

Quoting from the Rom page itself.

. You cannot use CM7r2 with this Rom. And having S-Off just means you have fastboot commands which is used to flash recovery etc. and have the ability to edit system partition while the phone is booted. It doesn't mean you have to change hboot. You can just stick to stock.
Means If I have 146mb for apps, which mean Im using stock hboot?
In that's the case than I have to download other ROMs in stockhboot version?

Yes each rom has to be flashed according to the hboot specified. If it is for cm7r2 or any other hboot it would be specified on the rom page itself.

All instructions are in alpharev.nl, hboots included. You'll need the usb drivers and fastboot program.

Wich hboot

Hey.
I've got a question, my buddy got a Desire (GSM) wich I sold him long time ago.
I had Oxygene and Oxygene hboot on it, now its stock 2.2 Sense and unrooted, cause he is an IT illiterate.
Now he is complaining about lacking internal space, and I will help him root it, and install another Hboot, because that gave me around 300 mb. internal space, when I owned it.
My question is, he will be running rooted stock 2.2, and I will root it and install another HBoot on the phone, to get some more internal space, but wich one should i pick?
Bravo Stock 250M 40M 147M 7bd5234711364880de1fa982dcf3a2d6
Or
Bravo Sense 180M 40M 217M 47d034c8350e665dc20eafbd3a4900de
?
I think you should write down what is exactly shown in the bootloader first. You have to be SOFF before changing hboots.
As far as hboots are concerned only use the hboots from alpharev.nl. Totally depends upon the ROM you want to use. Best to go to the ROM thread and see what the dev recommends.

Either you didn't read the whole topic, or you misunderstood it.
I will gain root and gain s-off, but I won't flash any Rom, I will let it run stock Sense 2.2, and those hboots are taken from the alpharev.nl site.

How do you think to run stock (which mean factory) 2.2 on custom hboot? Do you know that it requires 250mb system partition to run?
Different thing is if you want custom 2.2 made from the official stock ruu, that could be found.

I did'nt know, I thought that was possible?
So you can only change hboot if your running a custom rom?
Yes, cause stock OS, or rom, requires 250mb system partition (it's somewhere around 242-243mb leaving 7-8mb of free space). If youre up to extension of memory, choose some custom rom that fits cm7r2 hboot image and flash both.
Ohh okay.
What is the most stable custom rom with sense?
Maybe some Sense 3.0
