Hey all, firstly I'd like to say that I searched everywhere and could not find a solution to my problem.
So anyways I was using the app SleepBot and there is this feature where the app helps
track your movements while you are sleeping through vibrations or something. It for some reason
turns your screen on and I suppose that is the reason this happened to my screen. I've tried a factory
reset by just randomly guesstimating where the buttoms are. But regardless it was determined it isnt
a software problem but possibly a hardware problem? The screen basically appears to be glitching out,
flickering is the images which should be displayed on the screen. In the middle there is this white line
and below it there is a white box about half an inch wide
Has anyone encountered this problem before? Is my phone done?... what steps would I have to take in
order to get a new phone.
Can't post a video atm because I don't have more than 10 posts lols... well hopefully someone can answer my questions
and I'll be able to post
If you have any questions feel free to ask =)
Yes thay sounds like faulty device. You know these things are made to work but things CAN short out break or just flat out die on you for no reason. An app wouldnt do that even after a factory restoration. Your last bet is to odin back to factory image and then if that screen problem persists get it replaced

I don't know what steps need to be taken I have never had to have anything covered by warranty or insurance. Try searching there have been discussions on this forum numerous times about warranties and such.
For your first search. Just search for warranty or insurance

Hello All,
I have a question about the screen, I noticed yesterday that I like oil in the center of the screen (inside). I never noticed before if I had already or not, because we noticed that in a certain light.
Of course I do not detect any malfunction at the screen, just the effect of oil and a little embarrassing to say the least strange. Someone would he have the same problem or is this quite normal?
Finally I take my post to thank all members of the forum to find all the information over the posts
Ben.
are you sure its not a Neuton Ring?
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~scdiroff/lds/LightOptics/NewtonsRings/NewtonsRings.html
yes it is very similar to this kind of thing. it makes me a rectangle that is at the center of the screen. But it's normal or not ?
hello, I can bump my post, because even if xnifex answered a question I posed, it does not say if this is normal or not and whether I should return my phone warranty.
Thank you for responding.
FYI, have that on my Fuze, and also my Tilt 2. I believe it is within specification for the type of touch screen we have.
If this is happening to your phone, ask for a warranty exchange. this is known to happen, from what i've read, but it's bad & you need to get a different phone.
Im sorry if this is a noob question......I need to take my phone to the store to be fixed or exchanged due to me having a burn spot on my screen.....what is the best way going about losing root or covering it so they cant find out.

That'll do it!
Sorry but had to!
Search the development forum for unroot and you'll find quite a few threads.

that's cool man, lol....but hey thanks for the link, I actually found the thread with the official latest RUU and just ran the exe.....thanks though!!!
Had the same problem on my phone. took it to an actual sprint repair center and they replaced the lcd.
First off, sorry, I know this is a dying thread buuuut instead of starting a new one I was wondering;
If you haven't taken your phone in could you post a pic, as best you could, of the burn? I thought this was an issue with my screen as well, but when I took my phone in to the Service Repair Center to have this random reboot issue looked at I brought this up. Guy said it was from pressing too hard on the screen .... now I know I've seen LCD monitors that have had this issue, the result of someone smashing their finger into the screen and it sort of looked like this, but I'm positive this isn't the case.
I've seen pictures of others and it looks like mine, so that's what I thought it must be. Guy basically said, with all confidence, that that was the issue. Then he proceeded to tell me to not put the phone in my back pocket and sit on it. Well, no ****. Unless someone sat on my lap and did this, which is unlikely as I would have instantly removed the phone (also the spot probably would have been bigger) so I'm sure that isn't the case. But I couldn't really argue with the guy seeing as to them, the customers never know what they're talking about.
So I guess, long story short guy said he couldn't replicate my reboot issue and said a new battery would fix it. Suffice to say, that wasn't the case and I was able to replicate the issue in 3 minutes once I charged the new battery up. But; could a picture be posted? I've seen pics, now I'm searching and I'm not finding anything .... here and over the interwebs.
If this thread dies, that's fine, am pretty much at the point I'm just going to go through insurance anyways to avoid any run around.
Thanks if ya can, and if not, no big deal.

sure I'll try and post a picture later.....now on mine it's more noticable on a white screen but it can still be seen on darker screens.....it looks like 2 more may be popping up as well.....I may get **** for this, but I have the best buy insurance and I just took it up to them and they are going to send it in for repair or may junk it out for a new one (im waiting to be called back until they have a loaner phone)
Cool man, yeah I too really only notice it on white / lighter screens. Like I said I guess it could be from pressure but another pic I had seen looked similar so that's why I think that's the case, even though he sounded pretty sure. And I wouldn't sit on my phone lol I baby my electronics to the point of it being almost ridiculous. Thanks for the response.

Dropped my At&t S3 at work today and the screen went black... can sometimes see a few lock screen images, but it is unresponsive to touch. I'm rooted, running CM10 and believe I have usb debugging allowed on the the phone. Is there anyway for me to locate and view the SMS's that have been sent to me through my computer? Sorry if this has been covered before, I just spent the last hour searching, but was unable to find anything. Also, does what I described on my screen sound like it will need just a glass replacement, or digitizer, and LCD? Thanks for all your help.
You can get the sms database from /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases

Thanks for your help, but I was unable to find the files this way. When I access my phone through windows explorer, I open internal storage, then data and the only file I can see is a titanium backup file. Am I going about searching my phone the wrong way?
On a brighter note, I did just find a program called myphoneexplorer which gave me quick access to everything I needed, so problem solved. Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to fix my phone.

This is definitely more than just the lens (glass), everything would still work if the lens were the only problem. Although unlikely since you say sometimes you see the lock it screen it could be just a loose cable(s). The reason i say this is if it were just a bad connection you would probably get flickers more often that just the lock screen. More likely it sounds like the LED panel is blown. I feel your pain, i actually just dropped mine today and broke my lens...argh. Depending on your skill level with electronics you could attempt to disassemble the phone and check the connections. If it comes back to life and you just need to replace the lens, they range from 10 to 30 bucks. You can pick up a lens/led assembly for around 200 bucks online, or Samsung does it for 175.

That's because the data folder you accessed is actually /sdcard/data. You will have to use adb pull to get it off.

Just took it apart and tried re-securing most of the connections, but still no luck. I think I'm going to ship it off to Samsung, as that seems like the best price. Fortunately I have an old 3gs iphone that I left unlocked just in case to get me by in the mean time, unfortunately I'm back to using ios. As much as I hate apple, I have to say I dropped my 3gs hundreds if not thousands of times over the 3 years I used it, and only broke the glass once which cost less than $10 to repair. I've had this S3 for 3 weeks dropped it once and now I'm looking at close to $200 to repair it... kind of lame. That being said, now that I've gone android I could never go back.

It just really depends on where and how it lands, i've dropped all of my smartphones, some that i expected they were destroyed, you know on asphalt with pieces flying off in different directions, and managed to get a way with just a few scratches. This time my GS3 dropped no more than 36 inches onto a carpeted floor but manged to catch a sharp corner just on the edge of the screen and that was all she wrote. One of the biggest disadvantages to larger screens on our devices is more chance of the screen being damaged in a fall.
Not sure what happen, noticed it a few day ago but didnt give it much thought, but basically the leds for the two capacitive buttons on the bottom wont turn on anymore, I tried going into the settings, changed it from always on to 6 seconds, nothing. I tried rebooting the phone, still nothing. The buttons still respond with no problems but the leds???. Any clue to what could be causing this, I don't have insurance on the phone with sprint so I'm thinking of trying samsung for the warranty claim, not sure how that works.
You can probably get an Advanced Exchange at a corporate Sprint SRC . Cost ya 50 $ but cheaper then a new phone if Samsung cant help ya.

First, before anyone says this is sds/brickbug, it seems to be different. My phone keeps turning off between 2 and 10 seconds after turning on in any mode, normal boot, recovery, or download mode. My first thought was a stuck power button like my friend's S2 had (I fixed his) but after taking it apart and testing the internal switch with a multimeter, the switch doesn't seem to be stuck in the closed position as I see a changing resistance value when the button is pressed. It's also not the battery as I have used external chargers and a battery from a friend's phone. Same issue. I looked into the SDS thread and those all seem to be the phone won't boot at all or can make it into download mode but can't flash, but not constant rebooting like this. I've completely taken the phone apart (up to removing the mainboard) several times and can find nothing wrong with it. I'm inclined to think some sort of hardware issue but haven't found an answer for what. What seems the most telling is that, when it reboots during the boot animation (at a different spot each time) it hangs for a second before turning off, making me think it's some sort of serious hang. I also wonder if it could be the power regulation chip.
Bottom line, I've done some serious research but haven't found anything. I'd be willing to send it to a repair shop like the commonly listed mobiletechvideos.com but I'm not sure a Jtag would fix it if it really is a hardware problem. Any ideas or experience with the issue?

Ah, thanks. I tend to think of the Q&A, HELP AND TROUBLESHOOTING (emphasis added) forum as just the Q&A and forget the last part.
This model has never had an isdue with Sudden Death. I think that's the international models only. If that's what you have, you may want to post this in that forum as they may hsve seen this before.
If I had to guess though, I'd say its more likely a hardware problem. If it were software it would probably hang at the same place every time.
I could be wrong though...

Ah, no, it's a T-mobile. I did notice that sds was in the international forum and was going to check if it applies to the US but forgot. Yeah, I'm leaning towards hardware too. It'd be nice if I could find someone else who has had the same problem and has a diagnosis. The device is out of warranty (It somehow shows water damage though it's never been submerged. Dumb Florida weather...) so I want to evaluate other repair options before considering Samsung. I buy my phones second hand so spending more than $100 fixing it quickly becomes debatably useful. If it's hardware, obviously a JTAG won't fix it. I don't have anything super important on there but do have some game progress I haven't backed up since I started so I'd like to avoid a wipe, which is probably a pipe dream at this point.
Yeah, you could try a factory reset, if you can get into recovery long enough. If it comes to it though you could always sell it for parts. Or buy an s3 with a broken screen and swap parts.
Unless you hear from someone else though, I'm afraid your only way of knowing is to attempt a jtag repair. If it doesn't work, its probably hardware.
Good luck however it goes!

Yeah, recovery usually doesn't even show and only occasionally just gets to the TWRP splash screen so I can't do anything there. Just checked Ebay and was shocked how cheap broken screen S3's are. I have hope! If I just need the mainboard, does the carrier matter? I know roms are interchangeable but I'm not sure where the antennas are tuned for Tmobile's AWS. I imagine it's in the Qualcomm Radio on the mainboard which would require a Tmobile device. Any idea?

I can't say positively, but I'm pretty sure that's correct. AT&Ts I747 will work on T-Mobile networks, but you will never get the performance from it that you would with a T999. If you could find a T999L that would be even better still!
I know the cell radio is built into the SoC (wifi and BT are on a broadcom chip), so the more I think about it the more positive I am that you'd need to try to stick with the T-Mobile device.
Sprint and Verizon devices won't work though, just so you know. Those are CDMA. Yours will need to be GSM. An easy clue to this is if it has a sim card. I'm telling you this becsuse there are still other models out there, and some may or may not work. Just in case you can't find a T999 or T999L.
