To do an OTA update, I had to flash a custom rom and now I need to reinstall all my apps. I was wondering if there is a way to unroot my sprint note 2, update it, then reroot it again without having to backup all my data. Or is there a way to do this with ODIN and flash the latest firmware and then going back to my normal roms and such? Thanks!

You will need to back up!!! Using odin will delete all data and apps!!! Its easy enough to do.

If my S3 is stock rom but rooted with cwm recovery loaded, will I be able to get the AT&T OTA JB update once it rolls out with no issues? I understand I might lose root, but is that it? I know it will be a couple more months, just want to be sure the phone will be able to get this with no issues when the time comes.

From what I understand, you need the stock recovery in place for OTA updates, otherwise they will fail. Which makes sense.
Ok that makes since, so closer to go time I can just put the stock recovery.img on there right?? Is it that simple?

flash to stock via Odin, so yes...

Or you could just wait until the update drops and somebody posts a stock rooted version and update it through Odin.
Ok so have to flash the stock rom itself and not just the recovery. I have only really used an older Galaxy S1 to mess with flashing and stuff and never cared about the apps and everything, just would put a rom on there and when needed put it back to stock(borrowed it for a couple months). So if I do a titanium backup of apps+system data I can flash the stock rom, I assume root again and then restore the apps? let it update and Im done, or assuming the stock At&T JB rom is available on XDA I can just flash it on there, root and restore from titanium? Those are the 2 options if I want to stick with stock right?

Right, but it's not usually recommended that you install apps+data with TiBu; better to just install apps only.

Got ya, I do a backup with apps and data to be safe, but you can just restore apps only from that right?

You can. Though could also just let the Play Store redownload your apps for you.
I am currently on ICS 4.0.4 stock AT&T, rooted, CWM installed.
Will the update to JB unroot the phone?
What about the apps I have installed and personal data?
Will it replace CWM back with stock recovery mode?
Please explain if you know how it's gonna work

Well, you won't be able to install it over the air since those updates require the stock recovery to be in place. To maintain root you'd have to wait until somebody posts a rooted version of the room and flash it via Odin.
I'm assuming you can keep your personal data as is, since when I flashed via Odin from Stock to Rooted it remained.
So, like most people this morning, got the OTA notif. I'm on stock Rogers roms but rooted. What's the best way to get that update without having to restore phone? Don't care if i lose root or CWM as we can get them back.

As long as you never flashed the modified recovery (Clockwork, etc..) then you can do the update and wont lose anything but root. But since you have CWM installed, you'll need to flash the stock ROM (like I did) and retry the update. I didn't lose any settings when I flashed the fully stock Rogers ROM.
and after, how do i root again?
Just Odin the LG1 image from this thread. It will update you to LG1 and include root in the process.

*edit* just noticed you are in Rogers.

I have the T999 SG3 model, am rooted and currently running the Wicked v10 rom. I want to try out the 4.3 upgrade and was wondering what the best/safest way is to do this. I already did a nan backup. Do I need to unroot? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

If you are looking to have your phone download the OTA, then you'd probably need to wipe and install a stock rom. You would then lose root, however. Not sure what the implications of that would be, but I'm sure you'd have to use ODIN, etc, etc, to get back to rooted and custom rom.
I would just flash the stock ROM from DocHoliday's thread instead of going through Odin.. Don't have to worry about Knox or anything, and if you don't like it you can easily wipe and restore your nandroid

Thank you for taking time out of your day to help.
I just got an s4 on tmobile and I have some questions. I tried rooting it and ran into an error. I found an answer online, which was to flash a stock 4.3 rom via odin, then try the CFT autoroot. So it's all good and I'm rooted. I just have some questions:
1. Why was I able to flash a rom via odin, when all the rom installation guides I see require a CWM or some other recovery?
2. When I try to boot up into recovery I think it's the stock recovery and not a custom recovery that allows me to install a zip. When I used CFT auto root, I saw it booted into a custom recovery to root, did it just get deleted after that?
3. How will my root work with the 4.4 ota? When I check for software updates it says my phone has been modified so they aren't available. So how can I get the ota? Am i better off flashing a custom 4.4 rom? I want closest to stock as possible, so if you have any recommendations for stock 4.4 roms that would be great. Or can I flash the 4.4 stock rom as I did with odin?
4. How does tethering work with root? If I have unlimited data with 2.5gb tethering data, now that I'm rooted, can tmobile tell I'm tethering if I'm using a root tethering app?
Again thank you very much for your help.
1. You did not flash a ROM with Odin, it was firmware.. Very different
2. Yes, I believe that's what cf-auto root does
3. Yes you can flash a 4.4 firmware like you did with 4.3 as long as its for your device, or flash a custom recovery and then a 4.4 ROM
4. Not too familiar with this, but it might be possible to get around it

Awesome thank you. If I flash the official 4.4 firmware for my device, will I keep my root?

No if it is an untouched fully stock rom/firmware but there will be rooted versions of the stock firmware/rom.
Stay with root, you will be better off, custom roms are usually available within a day after ota updates
