Hi there
Wondering if any of you kind folks can help me understand what is happening on my phone.
I've a new Nokia Lumia 900 which I've had for about 2 weeks. Unfortunately (rather fortunately!) I won it at a Microsoft event, so I can't exactly take it back to a retailer for repair or question.
My phone seems to intermittently crash. Most times it just reboots but occasionally it's just dead and I have hold down the power button to reset. Anecdotally it seems to happen most when I have WiFi turned on, though it does happen occasionally without WiFi on.
I have reset back to factory setting twice and also turned off all background process I can. Of course there are still a few applications that I can't turn off from running in the background.
Despite this, the phone still crashes A LOT with WiFi on (2 to 6 times a day) and occasionally with WiFi off (once every 2 or three days).
Does anyone know what is happening and how I can find a fix?
PS: Both the phone and Zune report that there are no updates applicable.
Cheers.
Look in settings/about and take note of the Firmware and OS versions and kindly write them down on here, If you have OS ver 8862 then you already have the latest version and need to take your phone to a Nokia Care centre or send for repair as it should not crash at all, If you have a lower ver ie: 8107, 8773 or 8858 then maybe you can force an update through Zune, Which may well fix your issue?
Tried that...

Thanks for your reply Andy
I did exactly that, checked the OS version, and I discovered that I did NOT have the latest OS version but Zune reported I did.
As a result I contacted Nokia to explain the difference in OS version availability published on the Australian support site vs the fact that Zune reports the OS version is up to date. I was told that not all OS versions are available across all Lumia 900 phones and regions! Er... Whatever...
However, the support staff did recognise I'm having an issue and has lodged a ticket with the "appropriate department". Time will tell how response they are.
I guess I either have to wait for the OS update to be made available to have their support technicians contact me back to resolve the issue.
Either way I will update this thread with the results in case anyone else has a similar issue.
Fingers crossed they get it sorted for you,
However if you do decide to be cheeky there is a way of forcing the update via Zune, As you click update and before it tells you you already have the latest firmware etc you disconnect your lan cable, It is a bit tricky and timing is the key, You may have to try several times etc,
Or as a last resort http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128295
In either case I cannot guarantee it will fix your issue but it could save you from boredom as you await a fix.

Ha! Yes.... Well I've not heard anything from them yet. Day 2 so I'm not quite bored yet
However, on a positive note the updates came through tonight via Zune without pulling of LAN cables (ED: read hair), so all's good on that front. Time will tell if the updates solve the problem, but it did 3 cumulative updates so I guess there was a bit to do...
Thanks Andy

Hi
I have a problem with a Desire Z. Alot of times when I try to send a message (SMS) it takes forever (5min) before it gets sent. If I hit the home-button while watching/waiting for the message to be sent, it's put in drafts instead of keep trying to send.
It's also slow at recivieving messages. Tested with a couple of other phones and compared.
Does anyone else have a simular issue? The sim-card has been used for years with other phones without troubles.
Try using a different messaging app (i.e. handcent)

Same problem for me. Hoping the new OTA solve this problem.
Tap on "send", put the phone away, look at the phone after an hour, somethimes the sms is still "sending" !
I only get this if I have no or very bad signal, i.e. it will wait till it's got a signal to send it.
I wonder if it's worthwhile for you guys to do a factory reset or re-flash the ROM ?
Only thing I can think of is using the "delete old messages" function after deleting all your messages. other than that, I'd try wiping cache and dalvik cache (assuming you are rooted). Re-flashing the ROM should be a last resort (assuming that you even have a custom ROM installed).

This isn't relevant for my problem since it's always good strength + when I tested the slow recivieving the other phones was in the same room, with no problems

So it's possible it's so slow at sending since it has alot of messages in the inbox? It might be the case, but even so it's lame if that's the reason, it's far more powerfull than just handling some textfiles

Thanks for all your answers, will test'em out as soon as I can!

Haha I agree with you on that, mine has messages in it from weeks and weeks ago. the only reason i said that is because when I was with sprint, I had a HERO (i know, they arent even close to the same spec-wise) and it acted the same way your G2 is acting now. I fixed it by doing what I recommended. worth a try
A little nomenclature for you...
OTA - Over The Air update. It's an update that HTC or your service provider pushes to your phone when it does a check-in, if it is more current than the version your phone is running. Basically it's a software patch for the system software located in your phone.
Seeing that you don't know what an OTA is yet, I can deduce that a rooted phone definitely isn't your problem. I think you should check your phone for updates (Settings -> About phone -> System updates -> Check for updates) and see if anything pops up after you hit okay.
If you find an OTA and the problem still persists, you may find a new SIM card would be an ideal option. Let me explain myself here:
When Cingular made the switch to AT&T I was still using a Cingular labeled SIM card. It worked fine until AT&T switched to 3G. When I got a 3G phone, I found that I couldn't get 3G no matter what I tried, because for some reason the SIM spec didn't support 3G. So I had to switch my SIM to get 3G. I've found that with each new spec that comes out, often times the best way to go is just to switch the SIM out each time you get a new phone. Might take a few minutes longer getting your contract up, but new SIMs seem to be sent out to our store (which is a AT&T/T-Mobile vendor) every time a new network spec is introduced by the carriers. I'm not entirely convinced that this is just a strange "coincidence".

Hehe thank you, but I do indeed know what rooting is etc., but the phone we're talking about isn't rooted so it's not the problem.
Just because I haven't bumped into the word OTA doesn't mean I don't know how the updatesystem from HTC works
And yes, it's the latest version, just got a update ticking in, dunno if it fixed the problem yet.

The recent update solved the problem (for my Desire z),
it was an HTC bug
Sorry for the late answer, but one day the mobile just decided to empty it's inbox for whatever unknown reason, and well, that solved the problem.
But thanks for all the answers, once again
the htc sense messaging app is horrible. the dates and times are wrong and it is like a pig. openeing, sending, reading are all slow.
install the vanilla android messaging app as shown here then you dont have to install third party

I, like many have been eagerly waiting for the 'Nodo' update to appear in my Zune installation on my home PC. But unfortunately I've had no luck so far with Zune and my phone both reporting my phone is up to date, with 7.0.7008.0 as the latest.
However when I plugged in my phone into my work PC (with a different internet connection, OS, but same version of Zune) it detected there was an phone update. Unfortunately I can't install it because work block access to Windows Update service. Under the settings menu, my phone did then report there was an update.
However, when plugging it back into my home PC, my phone and Zune reverts back to saying there is no update and 7.0.7008.0 is the latest!
Weird.
Can you do a copy/paste ?
He just got done with his story about how he can't get the update and you ask him if he can copy/paste?!?!?!
ahahahaha....hahahaha
Confirmed.
After i have read your Thread i have try it with diffrent options.
I have try it many times, my personal computer have on three diffrent location no update receive.
My company Laptop have on two diffrent location no update receive, but after i logged into the Company Network via VPN i get the message update available.
I have try it many times disconnect "no update" VPN every time "Update available".
Very Strange, but now i happy (and i have now copy&Paste)
what what what????
i doooont understand!!!! XDDD
explain more clearly so i can replicate the procedure identically!!!
i got the update a couple of days ago, unbranded omnia, but i already had copy and paste since i got the device a couple of weeks ago.
So it will work with some random vpn?
kindly explain further the situation.. thanks!
Talking about weirdness... I got prompted for NoDo today, was busy so decided to postpone.
Came back an hour later on the same PC and nothing. Zune says I'm up to date with version 7.0 (7008).
Can you guys all mention a device name along with a carrier
country etc.?
I tend to get some false hope everytime I read a story of people getting NODO successfully.

Well these are not exactly succesful stories are they?
Just for the record I have an unbranded Omnia 7 still not updated.
there is a thread that specifies carriers and location already here..

Ok... Can you guys tell me how did you do the VPN so I can try and get the update... I dont have patience for this stupid update. I want it now!!! But seriously how did you guys do the VPN? =)
Well, theoretically you could use something like usaip.eu , which simply let's you vpn to places all over the world (with a free account only for 7 minutes before having to redial, but that should be enough).
I tried it and I still don't have nodo, only pre-NoDo (which I got the day it was released).
I have an LG Optimus 7, which originally was branded by vodafone, but I removed the branding via the registry (I tried the update with and without the carrier info). I live in Germany.
Good luck!

Lol, how is this even possible? Is MS having a time limit or something, like "here you go, the Nodo, take it while you have the chance, it will end in 5 minutes and then you'll have to wait another week until next chance shows up!"

Yeah that's just ridiculous, I don't get it.
However I tried the freeVPN solution, with no luck. Maybe I should try om my GFs Macbook? You never know...
none of these VPN things work. I tried here in our office in IBM Philippines.. LOL nothing works...
I checked for updates several times and tried all tricks available without success, zune said I was up to date with 7008 firmware. I then did a factory reset, connected with zune and straight away I got the update. Omnia 7 unlocked (original 3 branded but flashed with XENJK1 firmware) on Telia in Sweden.
A lot of people have seen the links on WPCentral and WMPowerUser for force updating to Tango using the cab sender method.
I've been posting in that thread since yesterday and I'm seeing countless people messing up their phones by (a) not using the cab sender tool to make a backup before sending the updates or (b) not installing the language packs with the update or not installing the correct language packs.
The other thing people should be aware of is that for some people the update is removing INTEROP unlock. If you have a very recent Samsung firmware there may be no way to unlock again.
Tango adds very few features. Location awareness icon is not there. Export to SIM only appears to be there for a select few. Unless MMS is something that your life depends on, wait until more work can be done by the developer community analyzing what effects the 8112 and 8773 updates have on all the different phones & variations (carrier/unbranded) thereof.
EDIT: One user with a Dell Venue Pro has most probably irreversibly bricked his phone by applying the update.
If you want to force the update, try it:
http://www.wp7connect.com/2012/06/28/how-to-force-tango-update-on-your-device/
Worked for me. Needed two updates. The second one was 8773, then I received Nokia firmware.
i don't understand how those steps are able to work. if the wlan connection is killed while zune is searching for an update it returns a 'can't check for updates right now' error.
If you do it the right timing, it will stop the checking of the phone carrier etc. So thats something like
Connect to server > Check Atual Version > Check Last Version Available > Check if allowed to update > Update
When you kill the wlan, you are supposed to it exactly in the part that check if you are allowed to update. When it doesnt receive a response from server, it just update. Basically, you jump one step.
And it works perfectly. I've done this with Mango, now I done this with Tango too. Believe, it's not troll.
Another method is to count how much time it takes to answer you that your software is up to date. And then take 1-3 seconds off. That's when you have to disconnect. So you keep trying alternating the time you disconnect your pc.
thanks for the explanation of the sequencing.
i love wp7, and the lumia has been great...but i think it's a bit strange that updates are via zune software only, yet they stripped the marketplace accessibility functions from that same software making them ota only. sorry for the stray OT.

WP 8 is going to have OTA update. And a rumour that 7.8 too (I dont know what for. Will MS release updates after 7.8 to 1st and 2nd generation?). But I think the Kernel CE is the one to blame here. Its not a big problem for me. You will have like 2~3 updates in one year. That gives one update every 4 months or 6 months. I dont mind connecting my WP to computer.

It worked for my carrier unlocked Samsung Focus.
At first I installed the OS updates (4), then I tried to install the 5 lenguages that my phone needed but an error prevented that, so after I tried to install only my main lenguage and it worked!
I agree, it's not really worth it, I use the MMS feature, but this cab update method it's not very stable in all phones.
I finally couldn't take the disappearing keyboard issue on my HTC HD7s. As far as I read, AT&Crap had no intention of providing that update, or Tango for that matter. I followed the steps for the cab loading updates and they worked fine. Haven't noticed any adverse effects for the past few days. Now I just bide my time until my contract ends so I can grab whatever decent WP8 phones that come out.
We've been doing force update thing from the Mango days. It's a easy process *IF* people follow the directions. It does work but, you must have the correct language packs/files to install with it.
It also could remove your Unlock.
If you READ THE DIRECTIONS and RE-READ THE DIRECTIONS, then FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS you should be fine.
It's people who are in a rush who brick or screw up their phone.

So is there any confirmation that people are able to do the Tango update on the Lumia 900 on at&t via the disconnect internet trick? I've tried a couple of times and been unsuccessful. I don't want to waste my time continuing if it won't work.

After several attempts finally got the prompt for update OS to 7.10.8112 however the update was unsuccessful!! Did it 2nd time but again the update was unsuccessful???
Not sure why it's doing this? If I cannot update to 7.10.8112 then I cannot update to Tango 7.10.8773.98
Has anyone else experienced this on unlocked European Titan? If it helps I'm currently on OS version 7.10.8107.79 and with Bootloader version 2.6

Hey all,
Please bear with me
Here's the thing:
I got my factory unlocked Lumia 900 back in June from Amazon US... I'm really happy with the phone... no issues whatsoever.
My last update was about 3 weeks ago (forced through Zune {plug phone then disconnect from internet} to 8779.
On Thursday (Sep 20th), Zune suggested that a new update was available... So I did the update. I'm not sure there was any changes, but the firmware is still 8779.
On that same Thursday (after the update), I decided to convert from hotmail.com to outlook.com... So i had to reset (to factory settings) the phone.
After a couple of hourse, all apps (that were installed) were reinstalled and all accounts were created, linked... (in other terms, the phone was back to the same state... but with the outlook.com sign in)
Since then, my phone is rebooting on its own. It restarted once on Thursday, a couple of times on Friday... But on Saturday, It has rebooted more than 20 times already (many times when I'm not even using it).
- Since it worked fine for 3-4 months... I'm sure it's not a hardware problem... (and I'm not a US resident... so an exchange is not an easy option).
- Did anyone experience anything like that?
- If you have any advise/suggestion, please help me... anything!
Sorry for the long thread.
Thank you.
You should probably try the hard reset again. Sometimes when my phone is connected to the car or wall charger or any other type of charger and I try to reset it it will keep rebooting until I disconnect it, then it can reboot normally. Hopefully that helps or gives you some ideas.

If all that fails, and you really don't want to try to exchange it under warranty, there's always the Nokia Care Suite. You can flash the Stock OEM ROM to the phone agian. It has helped Some people get their phones working normal again. If it is NOT a hardware issue, and you sent in for warranty, this is exactly what Nokia would do to it, then send it back to you. I Highly suggest you download the LATEST ROM shown in the Care Suite, don't use the ones I've left links for. They are not the latest. Using the care suite, find the ROM that matches your Product Code.
Thank you for the reply.
Actually, I re-did a hard reset on Sunday and all is working great now
So if someone is having a similar issue, a hard reset would solve it
Hoping someone can provide some direction. First and foremost I am not a HTC savvy so although there are a few threads here about the same issue none of them relate to me as I have not rooted the phone nor flashed to custom ROMs or anything to that nature. I am simple user of the phone... Now.. to the topic.. so I bought this phone for my brother in law last year as a birthday present, and at the time I had a working phone so I didnt put my mind too much to it.. but I did liked the phone very much. Two months ago, I decided to purchase one of these, so I bougtht an HTC ONE X Phone S720e Android 32GB 8MP 3G WiFi GPS Bluetooth Unlocked White. I don´t recall what versión of Android it carried at the time but looking at the specs it should had come with Android 4.0.3. After loading it up, transfering my files on to it and loading some basic apps, whatsapp, email, Skype... it off coursed asked for a software update two times which I went ahead and did. The last one it installed added Android 4.2.2 and HTC Sense 5. It was working fine, layout changed considerably... now after doing another of the updates to applications and software, specifically the transfer files update it suddenly quit recognizing data services completely. I though it might be something with the micro sim, so I tried testing a couple of others, it didnt make a difference so I decided to back up my contacts and information I had on the phone and did a Factory reset. It wipped it clean but issue remains the sames, it is unable to even recognize the sim card is missing and when I go into settings I see the message Disconnected because service is unavailable.
Reading online, saw a few folks stating that this situation was related to software updates.. so I was wondering if I could get some help on how to get this fixed. Not sure what to do, downgrade to 4.0.3 or how could I get it resolved so appreciate some direction here.
If you go to settings - about - phone identity, does it still shows the imei ? Seen many people here having their imei gone from their phone and becomes an iPod since we can't write it back. Tho you are on stock, so better send it for repair.

It shows up as unknown actually... is this a software related issue then? Im concerned about the other phone going through the same situation... should no updates be installed to it then? That makes it fairly useless and might prefer to send it back and try to get a refund instead.
