Galaxy Nexus - Reboots when trying to move through screens quickly. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I had a bone stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus which suddenly began to boot loop last week after receiving a text message.
(1 year warranty is 1 month past)
Upon attempting to do do a factory reset via fastboot - clear everything. start from scratch. I am presented with what seems to be a working phone however if you move through the screens too quickly the phone will reboot.
I have since tried putting several different roms on the phone including flashing back to the stock original all present the same results.
When the phone finally comes up. I wait approximately 10 seconds in between each screen tap otherwise the phone will restart.
does anyone have any insight on this. I have been searching since Saturday night for similar issues/fixes but nobody seems to have mentioned this.
Is there a way to do a hardware test on the phone to see if it is in fact hardware related vs software related?
Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I think it's just an hardware problem.
Something happens when a part of code is executed and the hardware does not respond correctly.
Similar problems happen with desktop computers, a faulty memory module, for example may create a reboot due to the error, or making a driver to crash. These smartphones are little computers...
This is what i think IMHO. I'm a computer technician.
PS. Maybe when you scroll faster the cpu goes at an higher frequency an becomes instable, did you overclocked it in the past? Try to lock the frequency as lower as possible with a custom kernel and verify if the issue appears anyway.
Anyway I'll pay a lot of attention flashing a new kernel or recovery on an instable phone, if it reboots during flash you may brick your device!
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply,
This is kind of the theory that I had but I didn't want to make any assumptions. With my computer background I am very familiar and understand how to trouble shoot problems with a computer. However phones area whole new cup of tea.
The phone resided in an otterbox which could have led to overheating and ultimately the processor going bad. I am no so quick to flash a new kernal etc to restrict the frequency.
The thing that I find most odd though is that there have been no similar functionality reports.

[Q] Can hardware cause this ??

To those members who may have more insightful smartphone hardware knowledge... here's an issue I'm struggling with:
Got my Note2 two weeks ago. Intermittently after initiating a reboot (either to android, recovery, or from within recovery back to android) the phone freezes on the first Samsung splash screen ("Samsung Galaxy Note II" in white). The ONLY way to proceed is via a battery pull. It seems to be random and occurs anywhere from 20-40% of the time. Really annoying to pull case and battery this often, but I have finally have my phone setup the way I want. Running CleanROM v3.3, Perseus kernel v28.2, and TWRP recovery 2.3.2.3. No OC or UV. I should have seen this as a premonition as the day I opened the box and tried to boot up the ATT stock phone, it froze on this splash-screen.. but a battery pull resolved and I discounted it to some fluke. Now that I'm flashing more, reboots are more common. So, bottom-line: could this be hardware related or firmware? Thx
EDIT: more info: here's the strange part... after a request to reboot to recovery... splash-screen freezes... I do the battery pull... reinsert and power up... and somehow it remembers what I requested and boots directly into TWRP recovery! I thought a battery pull erased memory, but it proceeds to TeamWin recovery after power up...

You changed the rom and kernel and if it is still doing the same thing I would suspect a partitioning problem. Well I don't suggest you to change or play with partitioning now just I said so because you might brick your phone. I don't know much about partitioning, if it can cause such problem or not. wait until someone with more knowledge chime in...
Update
Wow... no love on this one... since today is my 14th day of ownership, I opted to return the phone... and AT&T is sending a new one. If I had waited one more day, Warranty dept would handle. They started to work this through Warranty, but after I insisted I'm still within my "return" period, they forwarded me to Customer Care. Interestingly, Warranty stated (based on the splash-screen freezing issue) that it's correctable and was being caused by either (1) "have bad data on my external SD which is loading back into the phone"; (2) during Google setup, GMAIL has been known to load bad data back into the phone" ? Huh? I told the rep how could my external SD or GMAIL account load bad data into the bootloader? Anyone heard of this? Crazy.
Reps don't know that some people actually know the boot sequence of a phone. ...... :what: It's a bull**** story cause they didn't know the answer to the problem lol

GSM Galaxy Nexus stuck rebooting

Hello everyone! I own a Galaxy Nexus that's running one of the Cyanogenmod 4.4 snapshots. While watching a youtube video my phone froze up and shut itself off. I rebooted and after a few moments the same thing happened. When I power up my phone one of two things happen. It either reboots while booting and automatically attempts to boot again or it manages to turn on for a short while and then turns itself off.
I believed the issue was a battery or hardware one at first but after leaving my phone booted in recovery for half an hour with no ill effects I think something else might be up. What do you guys think is the best course of action? The only thing I've done is a factory reset that has done nothing.
Anyone?

Factory Reset and reflash the rom. If that doesn't work try flashing another rom like Vanir. If your phone still shuts off...well unfortunately this may be a hardware related issue, nothing you can do if that's the case. Unless it's your battery which I highly doubt.
I think it's the same thing that happened to me a year ago, check this out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/help/bricked-phone-t2306672
for me it was a hw related problem, i had to send the phone back to assistance and have it repaired (it was still under warranty).
Good luck :good:
Thank you all for your ideas. I'll report back my findings later today.
Same problem over here. Tried a lot of roms (custom and stock from Google page), took it to assistance (no warranty though) was told is a hardware issue. Since replacing the mainboard its the same price as a new phone... well you know.
But a curios thing happened: tried to flash the Ubuntu Touch rom, same problem (reboots at Ubuntu start screen) and the Firefox-OS, that one worked (considering it's limitations obviously)!

[Q] 8.4 Tab unresponsive at times

I've been having an issue with my 8.4 pretty much since day 1, and I've been having trouble finding out what the actual cause is.
The problem is that my tab (8.4) doesn't respond to anything at least once a day. The screen is off, and it doesn't respond when I plug it in the charger or press any of the physical buttons.
I did find two 'fixes' to get the tab running again:
1. Refit the battery
2. Holding down the power button for ~30 seconds
After doing so the tab functions properly, and also the battery is at a normal level (so it doesn't show that it's fully drained).
Some more info:
1. I'm running CM12.1, and had this issue with various nightlies.
2. It also happens when the tab is charging.
3. It also happened one or two times when I was using the tab. The screen freezes for ~3 seconds until it goes to black. Same procedures were needed to get it going again.
I checked numerous threads and spent quite some time googling, to no avail. So I'm hoping you guys can help me in finding out what is causing this. If you need more info, please let me know.
Nobody has a clue? Maybe a way to find out whether it's hardware or software related?

Haven't heard of this particular issues. All I can think of is to try another ROM, or return to stock. At that point, if you are still having issues across ROMs, and/or on stock, I'd be inclined to think its a hardware issue.

G4 Bootloop

Hi Guys,
i am really confused and a little bit angry. The Following happened to me today:
My Phone (Unrooted, Locked BL) was behaving weird this morning.
It just randomly crashed and wouldn't boot up.
Eventually i got it to boot once or twice, but still it crashed, shut down and Bootloop.
A Reqular Factory Reset did nothing. now i'm trying to install the Regular KDZ-File for the H815, but things are just not working as expected.
Has anyone else had this problem before?
Is it normal that the LG Flash Tool is on 1% for over 5 Minutes and nothing changes on the Phone screen?
I want to know what has broken my phone so bad, cause this time, I just used it the way it was supposed to be used, no hard drops, no rooting, no changing of software in any means.
First LG Phone and it broke with no warning and no explenation. I'm a little disappointed right now.

The same happened to mine. Are you able to get to download mode by powering off your phone and plugging it into your computer? Im able to flash stock ROMs but nothing helps. The phone reboots by itself at random times and makes it into the operating system a few times but is never usable.

Hey,
yes i can get into download mode.
I am able to flash files, but the phone wont boot up anymore.
I just want to save my data, but i guess i wont be able to do so.
So i have to get to the store and get a new g4
Luckily i made a backup of my two weeks ago, so not much will be lost.
I also send an email to the LG customer Service, will post their reply here too.
I am really disappointed by LG at this point, i usually had motorola phones and they didn't have random errors like this one.
I switched to LG, cause G4 sounded awesome, but this error is making me sad.
I am really thinking that i won't buy another LG Product, which is making me sad too, cause usually most things made by them are great.

//==============First Request by me:======================
Hello dear LG-Service Team,
i just bought the premium product LG-G4.
Since some days, the Phone is beginning to hang and reboot, resulting in a bootloop.
Sometimes the phone boots, than optimizing Android for about 30 minutes (100+ Apps installed). After this happened, i kann use it again, but not fully.
To shortcut eventual questions:
The Phone is in factory State, no Custom Rom installed. The bootloader is locked and the Phone has not been rooted.
The mistake seems to come from your firmware.
I am really disappointed, because i paid a lot of money and no have a product which is barely usable.
I switched to LG because of the G4 and i don't want to regret this decision.
Kind regards

Email and response, translated by me, so there might be some mistakes...
I don't like the response, it feels like not being taken seriously.
Well, nevertheless, i will go to the retailer and will see what happens.
I will keep you updated.
What do you think of this response?
Greetz Esok
That response is terrible lol. I called in and they said they do not support my phone because it is an international version. So there was nothing they could do for me.
I have a similiar issue, but mine was due to a OTA update, and I didn't know about the download mode until now.
Thanks.
Any tips when I can get into the download mode? I just wanna recover my personal data (images, and texts)? Flashing STOCK image would preserve the personal data right?
While your phone is off, plug it into your computer while holding volume up. If you are using LG flash tool to flash a .KDZ firmware file, you will come across an option that says Normal flash or CSE Flash. Normal flash will not wipe data, while CSE Flash will. I have flashed stock images and it didn't work. Hopefully it works for you though.

+1 I'm in same boat and exact same issue with my H815. I love the device but this is unacceptable.
I'm having the same problem, it just happened to me all of a sudden and now I can't even get to the boot animation. I've been able to get into recovery 2 or 3 times but usually it just restarts before it even gets there. I recently updated to the newest xposed framework (though I've restarted just fine a few times after I installed it), did anyone else here do the same?
When I get home from work I'm going to keep attempting to fix it, I've flashed my current TOT but it failed after rebooting. I don't know if I'm having the same problem as everyone else but I'll update if I can find a solution.
same issue here on the at&t 810. Starting about 3 days ago I started getting random reboots + bootloops. Sometimes it would boot to the LG logo and stick, sometimes to the AT&T logo and stick, sometimes to the OS and freeze after the lock screen appeared. I can get into the OS and use it for awhile, then it will restart and it all begins again. 2 factory resets so far and no dice. I am rooted on 10e but have a warranty device on the way which undoubtedly will be on a higher firmware and will likely miss out on the potential coming bootloader unlock. At this point I am probably going to sell on craigslist and get a 6p. The phone is great when it works and I love the size, the looks, and the screen, but the lag and these reboots are unacceptable.
Just a short update by me:
I gave it to the retailer, they said it would take about 10 Days.
I hope this stuff won't happen again or this was the last time i am buying a LG Product.
I think i would have been better off by sending it directly to LG but nevertheless, maybe giving it to the retailer will make my warranty stay longer
I will keep you updated, including firmware Version the phone has after sending it in and so on.
All of the sudden my phone today just froze leaving me with a black background and no animations, the phone is very hot if I try to use it on that moment. Even when I reboot the phone stays very very slow and says system it's no responding.
What can I do? Even when a Reboot it some times works normal then suddenly does it again.

Sounds like a heat problem in your case.
What happens if you pull out the battery, wait 10 minutes to let the phone get cold and than reboot?
Well, no luck on my end. I could only even get into recovery one out of every 50 times or so that I tried, and when I managed to I wasn't able to sideload any system software because it wouldn't initialize the driver (my computer recognized the phone just fine, except the ADB portion). Clearing the data did nothing either. Luckily I'm on Sprint and the phone's being recalled anyway, so I just walked in and they swapped it no questions asked. At least after flashing a TOT and clearing the data they shouldn't have an easy way to tell I was rooted or anything.

Thanks for replying, I completely restored phone today and was a success. No more black background.
same random rebooting issue here as well. and I just bought this phone brand new from a 3rd party :/
Update: I seem to have gotten past the problems after updating to 10n. Now running stock debloated 10n rom with no reboot issues (so far)
Update 2: Had 1 - 2 cycle bootloop on 10n

I don't see how you giving your phone to your retailer will extend your warranty. That makes absolutely no sense, since your warranty begins from your date of purchase.
My phone also ended up with the bootloop and having to exchange with a new unit. I'm on the TMO Variant H811.

Actually German Law is a little bit different.
Regular warranty is not what i meant in my post, i meant the "Gewährleistung" its an additional kind of warranty given out by the retailer.
There are some cases in which this "Gewährleistung", which usually lasts for about 2 Years is made longer. Mostly this happens when the retailer would have to send in a product for the third time, they basically give out a new one, which will be treated like a NEW device. So new Warranty, new "Gewährleistung".
I hope this somehow made sense
Today i got my phone back.
They repaired it.
Everything is like it was before, so i am pretty sure they didn't change it.
Firmware Version is 10d.
The Phone is working so far.
Will keep you updated if anything changes.

Random Reboots?

I was just wondering if anyone else has an issue with their Note 4 rebooting randomly with no external input. This started happening with the Android 6.0 update both on the download from here and the AT&T official release, Any Ideas? I've already purchased a new battery due to a separate issue, any idea?
I had the same problem. The phone would freeze and randomly reboot. Sometimes the system crashes and asked me for the typed-in password (not fingerprint). Sometimes when I charge the phone, and unplug the power cable, the charging led stays lit and the battery has to be pulled. I decided to switch the battery with my wife's Note 4 and see if the effects remained. So far I haven't had any problems after switching the battery, so I believe the battery may be the cause of all these issues. I'll keep you updated on the issues.
I'm back. The battery replacement didn't fix the reboots. I think my phone's hardware is permanently damaged. :crying:

can you downgrade to Android 5.0.1 and help me with my problem?
its something completely different to this topic
I've been having the same issue, started about 2 weeks ago. phone would start being sluggish then if I continue tapping on screen, it'll reboot. At least once I saw it go into recovery & reinstall firmware(?). Another time it just sat at the bootloader screen waiting for software download or something till I took out the battery. Most likely it's a software issue related to 6.0 update or updates afterwards. taking out the SD card helped a bit.
but basically got annoyed & upgraded to LG V20 today. Coincidentally, there was another person at the AT&T store with a Note 4 having the same issue.
Mine just rebooted twice on me a while ago, first is emergency calls only now the reboots then what. And yes the slow charging is a problem too. MM got serious issue dam att

use wakelock its an app u get it from play store.it makes ur cpu always running.some how it fixes the problem of random reboots. dl it and set it to partial lock (the 5th option)
Same problem. Just started a few weeks ago. REALLY frustrating having to enter my password every 3-4 minutes. NEVER buying another Samsung, too many damn issues with this phone.
My reboots tend to happen once the phone goes below 60% battery. It's fine above 60%. Once it goes below 50%, the reboots tend to happen with any intense network activity. The phone will often go from 50% to 22%. I forgot what the 30's and 40's look like. I will try the Wakelock app.
Ugh. I posted about this a few weeks ago. It's started happening more frequently and will occasionally go into a boot loop or show 0% battery even though there's a charge.
Has anyone found any solution? I haven't tried wiping / resetting but I'm getting close to trying it.
Here is a cautionary tale for you. My completely stock, unroooted phone started acting the same exact way. On the 4th or 5th battery pull (to fix a frozen screen) it just crapped out. It's totally unresponsive. Deader than a door nail. Tried everything. The download mode, discharging by power button depression/battery removal, etc. Adb shell command does not detect it. Nor Odin. Computer throws up a qhsusb_bulk error when I plug it into pc. I have NO CLUE how to fix it & I am desperately seeking a solution. Please proceed wisely with your oddly acting phones & don't let this happen to you.

Same issue. Just got off the phone with Samsung support, all possibility of having this particular phone with this particular issue sent in for evaluation has been suspended. Translation, they know it is an issue and will not stand by the changes they push to their products (latest OS). I am researching the prospect of legal action since THEY pushed the new OS against my request. Shouldn't that affect the warranty or coverage? Consulting my attorney friends as we speak. Will let you know. I am not sure how WakeLock will help, it is not going to sleep, it is repeatedly power cycling through a kernel process until the battery overheats or it reboots.
Same issue
Since Marshmallow, my 910A will get sluggish or freeze, shut down, sometimes reboot and sometimes just brick (temporarily). Sometimes--more often in recent days, I get a "dll_mmc read fail" message and the target that says do not stop downloading. No matter what I've tried--factory and soft resets, cache clearing, battery pull, replacement, and SD card switch, contacting AT&T and Samsung rep--it doesn't seem to change. This is a daily issue and becoming more frequent. Any suggestions or do I just need a new phone? Thank you.
