[Q] 8.4 Tab unresponsive at times - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

I've been having an issue with my 8.4 pretty much since day 1, and I've been having trouble finding out what the actual cause is.
The problem is that my tab (8.4) doesn't respond to anything at least once a day. The screen is off, and it doesn't respond when I plug it in the charger or press any of the physical buttons.
I did find two 'fixes' to get the tab running again:
1. Refit the battery
2. Holding down the power button for ~30 seconds
After doing so the tab functions properly, and also the battery is at a normal level (so it doesn't show that it's fully drained).
Some more info:
1. I'm running CM12.1, and had this issue with various nightlies.
2. It also happens when the tab is charging.
3. It also happened one or two times when I was using the tab. The screen freezes for ~3 seconds until it goes to black. Same procedures were needed to get it going again.
I checked numerous threads and spent quite some time googling, to no avail. So I'm hoping you guys can help me in finding out what is causing this. If you need more info, please let me know.

Nobody has a clue? Maybe a way to find out whether it's hardware or software related?

Haven't heard of this particular issues. All I can think of is to try another ROM, or return to stock. At that point, if you are still having issues across ROMs, and/or on stock, I'd be inclined to think its a hardware issue.

buttons locking up

Hello,
For the last few days now my phone keeps randomly pushing the menu bottom for no reason!? I've tried several roms and I'm having the same issue. I have one of those expensive screen protectors on, but I don't think that is the issue. Sometimes all of the compasitive buttons lock up and I have to lock the screen and then unlock it for them to get back to working?

I have this same issue. I've done some research and it appears to be a hardware glitch that happens when you have low signal. I've seen some reports of people bringing up the issue with Sprint/Samsung and they will replace the phone. I haven't taken the time to try that yet, since it only happens very infrequently for me.
lol awesome, this started happening to me maybe 2-3 weeks ago and i had thought i sat down too hard on my phone and messing up the menu button. originally i thought i was able to replicate the problem just by holding the phone vertically and rocking it back and forth. i'm glad to see others are having this same issue (well not really glad, just relieved its not a hardware issue).
i am experiencing the same issues the OP is.. menu button randomly pressing itself and all buttons being locked up requiring a lock screen then unlock to get things back to working.

can you point me to the other reports of this issue?
Thanks guys. I just don't have the time to take in my phone in. I normally have about 3 or more bars of service and it was still locking up on me. it's getting really annoying. Maybe I can just call it in? Who knows? They always give me a hard time! If anyone finds a better solution please let me know. Thanks!

Galaxy Nexus - Reboots when trying to move through screens quickly.

I had a bone stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus which suddenly began to boot loop last week after receiving a text message.
(1 year warranty is 1 month past)
Upon attempting to do do a factory reset via fastboot - clear everything. start from scratch. I am presented with what seems to be a working phone however if you move through the screens too quickly the phone will reboot.
I have since tried putting several different roms on the phone including flashing back to the stock original all present the same results.
When the phone finally comes up. I wait approximately 10 seconds in between each screen tap otherwise the phone will restart.
does anyone have any insight on this. I have been searching since Saturday night for similar issues/fixes but nobody seems to have mentioned this.
Is there a way to do a hardware test on the phone to see if it is in fact hardware related vs software related?
Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I think it's just an hardware problem.
Something happens when a part of code is executed and the hardware does not respond correctly.
Similar problems happen with desktop computers, a faulty memory module, for example may create a reboot due to the error, or making a driver to crash. These smartphones are little computers...
This is what i think IMHO. I'm a computer technician.
PS. Maybe when you scroll faster the cpu goes at an higher frequency an becomes instable, did you overclocked it in the past? Try to lock the frequency as lower as possible with a custom kernel and verify if the issue appears anyway.
Anyway I'll pay a lot of attention flashing a new kernel or recovery on an instable phone, if it reboots during flash you may brick your device!
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the reply,
This is kind of the theory that I had but I didn't want to make any assumptions. With my computer background I am very familiar and understand how to trouble shoot problems with a computer. However phones area whole new cup of tea.
The phone resided in an otterbox which could have led to overheating and ultimately the processor going bad. I am no so quick to flash a new kernal etc to restrict the frequency.
The thing that I find most odd though is that there have been no similar functionality reports.

p5200 Random shutdowns

Hi all,
I own the p5200 (Tab3 10.1) for a few weeks.
Recently I noticed that the device sometimes randomly shuts down by itself, and I have to power it on again by myself.
It mostly happens when I don't use it (and than come back to use it and it's dead) - but it also happened once when I used it.
Did any of you guys experience that weird behavior ?
I don't believe it is a hardware defect, rather then a software/kernel issue (maybe even the previous generation's SOD problem?)
Appreciate any help!
Matan.

The problem seems to be getting worse, now it happens a few times a day,
I read some and thought it may have to do with the Sleep of Death.
If anyone knows anything about it I would be more than happy to know,
Thanks,

Thanks for the reply,
I'm running stock unrooted/modified XXUBMI5 firmware.
Hi,
same/similar problem on my P5200/10", stock not rooted firmware 4.2.2 - after cca a month of using random switch-off started, after another few weeks it was more and more frequent and the tab was usable only very hardly. my quess was some HW error like bad battery concact, as it happened mostly during tab movement/shaking/turn arounds etc.
Sent back to vendor to reclaim, back after a month with factory reset and message "problem not reproducible". and really, it was not happening(!)
Another week or two has passed since then - and random switch offs are again back, now also when there is no movement (i.e. overnigth). I am planning to try to save some logs to find why it happens (some bad application?) or at least to prove to vendor it really happens. then I will try also another factory reset (however, I do not like to setup it again and again and backup/restore might not work, if it is caused by some app ).
When this happened to me on a previous device, it turned out to be SD card related. The SD card would unmount and that would apparently freeze my tab, usually shutting it down. Then again I was using a swapfile and had most of my apps installed to the SD card. But I figured I'd mention.

thanks, but I have no external SD card inside, there is just the internal one, which is not removable.

Hi,
Same here - no SD card involved.
I can update that "somehow" those random shutdowns did not occur in the past few days (where before it happened a few good times a day)
I can also say that when the device is connected to a charger no shutdowns whatsoever.
Also, in the past few days battery is draining much faster than before.
Personally I think it is the battery, October's bad battery batch of the S4/S3 reminded me that this could be the issue here as well.
Tried to look online for a battery replacement to buy, but without any luck so far.
alfi_ , if you have any new info I would very much like to know
Thanks!

Hi,
so far nothing special - as it does not happen while on charger, also log via USB is useless. and the log via TCP is empty.
what I have seen in discussions / heard from more experienced people, incl. the branded service partner, it can be often caused by some additional application (for me its hard to believe. and if the same happens to PC computer, it will definitely be a reason to return the device). but anyway I would suggest you to make a backup and try the factory reset too. then test it for some time without any new installed application.
for my one it looks little better after reset (weird behaviour), but it still randomly shuts down. then I am going to visit a service center personally to present there the behaviour, but it may take some time..
Hi,
the problem was reproducible also in the service center with factory setting without any other application installed, so after a month the tab is back with replaced mainboard (part gh82-07643a) - and so far no problem. hopefully it will not repeat anymore
I've been experimenting the same issue. Sm t311, stock unrooted rom.
It happens when the device is sleeping, it just fails to come back.
I've seen it happen with and without sd card, with and without power cord attached. It doesn't seem to be related with the sleeping timespan either.

one, maybe useful info when this happens, which I was not aware of - androids v4.1 and newer have the possibility to boot into "safe mode", where all additional installed applications are disabled. so before you try factory reset and reinstall/reconfigure all applications, you can try also this. (I am wondering this option was not told me by the service). on tab 3 10" you can reach it while booting and the logo is shown, press and hold both volume keys.
battery terminal
I seen a post somewhere that samsung forgot to secure the battery terminal, on some tabs. I have the pics of the teardown, in case I ever needed them. I'll post a link. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rg53ls0004rgdjr/ARJ-ecv2NA/teardown (1)

Here is the original post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593766
After troubleshooting this issue and discarding possible causes such as charching problem, smart cover side effect, defective sd, etc etc, I had given up on my T311 and decided to start experimenting with some custom roms (after all, it's painless to brick a defective tablet). Somehow, after flashing FastDream the issue disappeared.
It has run for 27 hrs straight without turning itself off.

Hi, I have problem with my Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 gt p 5200.
Tablet without noticeable reason began randomly shut down by itself.
Sometimes in an hour goes off 5-6 times, and sometimes working 5-6 hours without turning off.
Tablet can not be sent to the service because it was purchased abroad.
On it is the original untouched Android 4.2.2.
I tried a factory reset and re-flash with the latest android from sammobile.com , but it didn't help.
Does anyone has a similar problem or solution.
Thanks in advance

Tab S 8.4 WiFi, after 6.0.1 update, restarts, white streaks, erratic display touches

Malfunctioning on Marshmallow update from Samsung.
I was going to install Cyanogen OS, but haven't yet.
The update from Samsung to M 6.0.1 seemed to go ok.
But, now I have errant screen touches, abrupt restarts for no apparent reason, and white streaks flashing on the display (intermittent).
It works fine for a few hours, then wacky again.
Is there anything that I can do?
This is the 8.4 WiFi only version. TM-7400 I believe.
No apparent damage to the display, no water damage recently, or ever.
Thanks!
I just now booted in safe mode. Seems to be working OK, but it has worked OK for hours after having the glitches the past couple of days.
Should I remove the SD card? Maybe an app on there is the problem?
What apps do you have? Use this and post a list.
http://www.onyxbits.de/listmyapps
Anyone?
I updated the few remaining apps which required it, and it's run fine since my OP.
I just now saw a white streak on the display, and a few seconds later it restarted by itself.
Thanks.
And, how much time involved in flashing Cyanogen Mod for a first time ever having done it?
Sorry, I didn't see this reply. I'll post apps list shortly..
TY.

What you need to do to fix this is:
Open tablet. Pull battery out for 3 minutes , pop it back in. Close tablet, your tablet will be fixed
Removing the battery is not only troublesome but seems a little unnecessary.
You should try formatting all partitions through TWRP and reflashing the 6.0.1 firmware using Odin. I did that and have no issues with my device.
The 3 symptoms this dude has are what the battery issue have. Pulling the battery and getting into the inside are not difficult with the correct tools from Amazon or eBay and tutorials from YouTube. This fix has worked with my gfs tab s

While removing the battery can be a good idea for removing leftover electricity from the circuits and probably fixing those issues, if not careful can end up breaking some component.
He said when booting the device in safe mode all issues disappeared, so flashing the stock rom using Odin probably will solve all problems.

Random and untimely reboots

Hello everyon everyone.
I have the SM-P600 version, everything was good until the beginning of the week when touchpad began to go off without reason, and completely random.
I first reinstalled several official ROMs from the most recent to the oldest, with no significant improvement
Then i rooted and tried Lineage, it looked good for a while, but in the end same problem.
Please note, when the tablet begins to mess, the reboots are occuring more and more often and after a while it turns in a loop and im not even able to switch it off.
Samsung logo display, black screen, logo, black screen, etc ...
I think rather for a battery-side problem, if some people have faced similar problem, I'm taking help.
Do you know if by chance we can use the tablet without battery to test this theory?
Thank you in advance for any answers.

I think I'd be taking a close look at the physical power button. Seems to me that if it had gone flakey it could cause something like this.

Hello and thanks for you answer,
Just to precise i never faced this issue while flashing an official or custom ROM, dont know if it is just luck or it can help in anything
Anyway ill try to check it the power button just in case
It's weird I just started having this exact problem myself. One morning I unplugged it and it had shut itself down overnight. Since then it randomly reboots. Sometimes I can get 20/30 minutes out of it, but once it starts, it can get into multiple reboots with the only way to stop it is to plug in the charger. I tried wiping cashe/dalvic (no help). Nothing was recently changed (including apps). Tried resoldering battery connector (battery was replaced a year or so ago with OEM Sammy). The P600 is rooted with TWRP installed, but no custom ROM. Usually the reboots start while I'm doing something (surfing, email, etc.), but I don't think it will do it while sleeping. I'm considering the power button, but I don't see this exact problem anywhere else, but this post. Any ideas?
OK. My tablet has taken a turn for the worse. Now it is stuck in a continuous boot loop. I tried the power switch, no help. I tried booting into TWRP, and it went back into rebooting before I could do anything. Strange thing is I can put it into download mode indefinitely without it rebooting. Should I ODIN back to stock? I tried the resoldering of the battery connection earlier. Any other ideas?
