Why don't you use ti backup? It makes a backup of your apps and data
Though you could try dirty flashing but you will likely run into more issues
Though I would erase everything and clean flash the update

For backing up apps? Well titanium backup has a ton of options but if you don't want to spent $7 on an app then I would use carbon backup

you shouldn't need to clean flash the nightly. just flash it. that's it.

Calisro,
what you mean with this... "you shouldn't need to clean flash the nightly. just flash it. that's it."..??
please explain me....

What he means is that what your trying to do is basically an update.
Your not flashing a different build or rom, your just updating your existing build.
Your just adding some updates and changes that the dev made so that your build is current.
Download update to your sd card, go to your recovery and flash away. (Probably wouldn't hurt to wipe cashe and dalvic)
You should check the rom thread, there may be specific instructions on how to update, usually if no special instruction is posted, its just a matter of flashing the update and rebooting.
By the way "clean flashing" is when you wipe all data, like factory reset.

if the can boot, you needn't to do a wipe.
maybe to do a backup is the best.

do a backup just in case and flash new rom. it shouldn't need any sort of wipe, but if you encounter problems that shouldn't be problems, you can do wipe.. and if it doesn't help, you can easily recover your backup.
Thank u guys very much, just installed it and works well without wiping!

[Q] How to update CM9 from alphaX to alphaY

Hi everybody,
just a quick question.
I flashed CM9 alpha7 a few days ago and now I saw that CM9 alpha8 is available, however if I go on
Menu -> Phone Info -> Update system
I cannot find any update.
So how can I update it to alpha8?
Thank you very much!
Lol, clicked wrong button, didn't mean to abuse thank button
Quoted from CM9
'Upgrades from previous versions of CM9 are the same process as install, except you do not need to wipe anything. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to even wipe cache and dalvik-cache when upgrading between CM9 versions. You only need to wipe if you are doing a major upgrade, switching to a different ROM entirely, or attempting to fix bugs caused by bad backups or corrupt app data.'
So you will need to download the latest ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576874
And flash it through CWM recovery
Hope it helps and good luck

I think it wouldn't lose them since you didn't wipe the data(not 100% sure), but it's always better for you to do a backup, please correct me if I am wrong
Do I have to flash gapps as well?

General help - Coming from a OG Evo

I am an OG Evo owners and just getting back into flashing and trying out different roms. Back when I would flash custom roms, the tool of choice for backing up data+apps was Titanium backup. Has this changed?
I am on Blazer 1.7 right now and would like to update to 1.9 but I don't want to lose all of my data and apps. He says something in his OP about there being an update.zip, but I don't see it anywhere. Is this pretty common for devs to include a update.zip that lets you seamlessly upgrade from version to version of the same custom rom?
With the OG Evo, you couldn't back up data from a ASOP rom and then flash over to a sense ROM and restore your data or else it would crap out on you. Is there anything that I need to watch out for in that respect?
So I have two questions
1. How do I retain my apps and information going from the same custom rom to a updated version of that custom rom?
2. How do I retain my apps and information going form one custom rom to another custom rom?
Thanks!
Hi and welcome to this awesome phone! XD
I too came from an OG EVO, was sporting Warm twopointthree back then...

Nope, it is still the tool of choice and everything from the OG EVO applies. It's a universal tool and works the same across devices. Do a user app+data only back up from OG EVO and restore it on the SG3. Do not restore system apps from OG EVO to SG3, these are the apps that are red or yellow font in TB.

I'm not on Blazer and haven't used it, maybe some one will come in and comment on this. You could try another ROM, like FreeGS3. It has a lot of positive reviews and is up-to-date with the latest OTA. The link is in my sig... You should have TWRP recovery for this ROM to install properly, the link is also in my sig.

The same applies with the SG3, this is because the system apps on the stock or TW SG3 are well Touch Wiz System.UI and framework and applying these to a AOSP ROM that has completly different System.UI and framwork will bring a lot of force closes and ultimatly an unresponsive device. You can restore user apps without issues.

There are a few options for this, you can "dirty flash" the ROM and you'll have the same setup and data as before the flash. This is just flash the ROM and only wipe cache and dalvik, but you should only do this when it's an incremental update from the same ROM. Although some say it is best to do a complete wipe and then flash the ROM even if it's incremental update of the same... One thing reported from some doing a dirty flash is poor battery performance or randon force closes, only way to fix this is a clean flash. Also, the dev (usually) let's the user base know if there was a change to the System.UI or framework and needing a clean install of the incremental update. This was also the case back in the OG EVO. Try the different options and see what's best for you.

Answered above, same applies.
Also, for clean install do the following, Wipe Factory Reset>Wipe System>Wipe Cache>Wipe Dalvik and then flash the new ROM.

Thank you for the awesome reply! Blazer 1.7 is awesome, smooth as butter and no problems with battery life whatsoever. I'm really enjoying it. The only reason I want to update is because of the pop up that I am getting about the new software update being available. I don't want to accidentally install the update and then brick my phone.

Gotcha! No worries here, just hit apply update and it'll reboot and "try" to install but it will fail since you have a custom bootloader. It won't brick the phone at all, unlike ye ol EVO :/
The thing that has bricked many SG3 has been flashing a ROM the international version... stay away from those.
BTW if you think Blazer is smooth, try FreeGS3, you'll be blown away haha
There's also a JB leak from Sprint in the dev section, I'm trying that tonight.

I have one more question. When doing a restore with Titanium backup coming from one rom to another (just switched from Blazer to FGS3), what restore option do I choose? I chose to "restore missing apps with data"

CM10.1 Freezing issue and message not sent error.

Hey guys,
First post here,
i was searching around for my problem, and i haven't found an accurate answer so thought to share my problem and hopefully find an answer.
i am from Canada, Edmonton, and i am with Rogers.
First problem,
i run CM 10.1 and Most the NIGHTLY updates they were butter smooth and works great, until Update number CM-10.120130317 till the current update. All the updates i download, my phone freezes LOT! example of how it freezes , i try to unlock my phone, it freezes . I try to write something it freezes . and sometimes when its on sleep it freezes i can't turn the screen on again! so i always downgrade to CM-10.120130316 to have that stable ROM.
I did the wipe date /factory reset from the ROM manager, and wipe cache and dalvik. and yet the problem is not solve.
So my question is, dose anyone facing the same problem? or it's just me?
Second Problem
am having this beyond annoying notification, where it says my message has not been sent! but my message get's sent and all acts normal. But i always get notification and its never gone. I have screen shoot the problem. Is there a way i can fix this? i've have attached in the thread.
if you guys have any questions or want me to provide some information please do ask.
Looking forward to hear the feedback.
Cheers,
for starts, you're running nightlies and you need to remember that. i'm not an advocate of these, but thats just my opinion. you generally cant run a non-perfected piece of software and repeatedly dirty flash layers of updates on top. you will generally begin to experience bugs that can only be fixed with a full wipe and clean install.
that being said, i would either 1) commit to these cm10.1 nightlies and perhaps even just stick with 1 of them thats working well for you or 2), find a stable 4.1 or 4.2 rom and install after a full wipe. backup first.
There's a warning that these builds are unstable and use them at your own risk. I use cm10.1 20130317 build and it is extremely stable. A few quirks but nothing major. I plan on sticking with it since the 3.4 kernel on the newer nightlies isn't optimized yet, which result is lower battery life.

assuming you have a stable backup to rely on, i would wipe data/factory rest, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and reflash either your current update or (preferably) the one you were running with no problems before. perhaps flash the one listed by a user above that seems to be running well

Interesting.. i have got an idea i will try to do it hopefully by tonight or tomorrow. and i will share the results.
i was thinking to manually download the latest update nightlies instead of my phone update it for me, and then do the wipe thing and then i install it manually, maybe that will fix my problem.
am using G cloud for my backup and it dose his job pretty well. I wanted to use the Titanium backup but it kinda was too complicated for me.
Why they just don't call it "install" instead of Flash then lol?

avoid using the OTA update feature on your phone. i didnt know you were doing things that way. you'll notice many more bugs and problems that route.
you are on the right path when you say download the actual update (latest release) yourself. make sure you have the gapps to go with it. boot into cwm, wipe data/both cache, flash rom, flash gapps

[ROM][7.1.2][OFFICIAL] LineageOS for N7105 - Help

OK, I dont want to post in the ROM area.. as far as I remember I am suppose to post here.
So I would like to install 14.1 on my note 2 I317. I did it last night.. not great results, but it was the root thing.
I am not sure the dev thread is updated on the latest way to upgrade the phone.
Anyone help? I flash the rom, then the apps (is the stock still the best option?) and then what do I do about root, because in the last few posts of the dev thread I see something about not flashing.. and flashing.
and then there is the HWC thing? am I doing this>? or no?
James
Also I am coming from way back on a rom called SLIMFAST 4.4 - If I want to carry over apps and data.. what is the best way to do that? or can I really?
James
You will carry the data (music, videos etc.), but app data no.
I don't recommend you to flash HWC as you are beginning with this and it is still test stuff.
Anyway steps:
1. Flash latest version of TWRP.
2. Backup. (In case something goes wrong)
3. Wipe dalvik, cache, system, data.
4. Install LineageOS.
5. Install Google Apps. There aren't 'the best'. It all depends on you which you want to use/how much google stuff you want on your phone.
6. Install magisk for root - http://tiny.cc/latestmagisk
7. Reboot.

Or u can just backup APKs using this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.usage.appbackup
And restore them with just one click using this :

But if you want data too, Titanium is good
well since the install the first time did not work well I restored the backup I did.. Now tonight I was trying to use the gps, and it is now not working since I restored the backup?
Is it possible something happened there??
When you restore a backup ( I did a complete with everything) I dont have to wipe stuff out first do I?

well, the partitions that is going to be restored are wiped by default before restoring the backup, so there's no need to wipe, it might be a bug in the ROM and you didn't notice it before.
anyway, you can try wiping manually then restore.
btw, your thread name is confusing, it's better not to right in that form......[ROM][7.1.2][OFF..........when it's a normal help thread.
well I am not sure it is a normal help thread.
For 2 years I have been using slimfast 4.4 no issues - and then I decided to try this rom, and it breaks my GPS.
I have restored 3 different backups I had of slimfast 4.4 dating back to January 2015. None of them does the GPS work.
Before I tried the 7.1 upgrade I was locking 22 satellites in about 45 seconds. Now I cannot lock to 1.
Is there an issue with this rom that would break the GPS to the point that no matter what rom is in it wont work?
Or can someone give me a hint on what to try next? I can try and re-do the upgrade via Option58s instructions.

yes it's a normal help thread, your thread name is more like a ROM thread name!, however...
did you try a clean install of the kitkat rom first?
maybe something is making a conflict or whatever I'm not sure..
try a clean install and see if the GPS is fixed.
clean install of 4.4 and no gps. apps that can show if the hardware is there, so it is present and available? but no app gets a lock.. on even 1 satalite.

I'm not sure, last thing to try is Flashing stock ROM, if that didn't help it, then it's a hardware damage.
