Sprint techs, are the stock restore files you have the exact same as is available to - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Took my phone in yesterday to a third party repair center for an issue. Agent said they would reinstall the os. I said it would not fix the problem because I have done that myself. I noticed if they did "reinstall" the os they didn't wipe the usb storage as a fresh start for troubleshooting. Techs, have you ever tested or md5'd a stock tar that we have versus a stock image file you have at work?

Oscar - I'm not a tech but I have a partial answer for you..
There have been users (Garwynn I know has done this) where they have taken a "leaked" tar versus an OTA, extracted and did a side by side comparison and they have matched.
That being said, if there was ever an "internal software" set, I'm sure it would have shown up by now. Meaning, what you get here, is what they'd have.
Don't forget that the official software which is ICS isn't going to wipe internal like the JB leaks would on install unless the option (re-partition) is checked in Odin, and I'd assume that is what was used.
Was the "issue" fixed by them?

Rebooting? Don't know yet. It kinda began to act like it was going to do it last night but when I watched it, waiting for it when I was sure it was going to happen, it didn't.

The techs use odin and the exact same official tar files we have here. They onky habe the OTA builds tho and not all the leaked builds we get
I like to break stuff!

Yes, they match. (Sorry, my reference couldn't give me any text to confirm that but it has been.)
It's why I've been trying to snag a GS3 MA6 and GN2 MA7 from them.... but I'm hearing they may not have it either.
What wi-fi config do you have?
And try this:
1) Back up everything.
2) Remove MicroSD card.
3) Factory Reset. (Yes, ##786# if you can and are on Sprint.)
You want to nuke your internal storage.
4) Flash FL24 Stock Restore one click.
Result (software-wise) should be a phone as if you turned it on for the first time.
This is your "control" in an experiment, the one case that should not cause any issues whatsoever.
If it reboots here it's no longer software and means you should get the phone looked at.
If it doesn't then start putting stuff back on slowly.
The goal would then be to see if by slowly re-introducing things to catch the offender.

Since I got it back, no reboot in over 24 hours yet. If it does then I will try without a tpu case in case that is possibly holding down the power key. If that doesn't help then I will try garwynn's suggestion.
it was doing it when I was running Samsung batteries but that case had a whole cut out for it on the power button so that may not be what is causing it. I am doing voice to text so this post made look a little retarded. Possibly something got screwed up with the radio? The pound pound 786 pound is resetting something I forgot what its called but I know what you're talking about. It is possible that that reset flushed out something that was snafu'd.
Out of all of the things that I tried that was not 1 of them so there may be something to this something got corrupted along the line somewhere.

Never been hot when a reboot happens. Has anyone ever hear of phones rebooting when their provisioning (don't even know if that's what ##786# does) is messed up? I'm going to run this for a week on stock FL24. If it doesn't happen within a week then I don't think it will happen.

I had a reboot earlier tonight. I have the log when it happened but I guess I'm not going to post it since nobody has said anything about it. I did the full stock rooted md5 with odin of gb27 and did a nvram reset and updated prl/profile. I went to gb27 after I got home after work and the reset happened earlier during work on the reinstall that the third party repair center did with fl24. I'm wondering if maybe the power button is getting weak. When I push it without a case on, its snap sound isn't as loud as the volume buttons. It's possible the case could be sometimes holding in the button slightly or not releasing it when I push the power button through the tpu case. I could send it in but I don't have the time to go to a corporate sprint store repair center and wait on it right now. Unless it gets worse, I will try and rough it out until my upgrade june 1, trade it in towards the g4 and pay the difference. The screen has noticeable burn in anyways. Although, if I took it in and told them about the button, I might get a refurb with a better button and screen and could keep it as a backup phone.

I say take it in. Open enrollment for TEP right now so good any way you go.

Yep. It's the power button alright. It started flaking out today without a case but it didn't reboot. Gonna have to get up early sometime and head over to the corporate repair place and spend some time there. That's one store you can never get in and out of quickly. Going to have to see if I can make an online appointment, if they still do that, for this place.

How often is the open enrollment for TEP?

This is the first I can remember, but I have bad memory. I've had it since I started getting smart phones because replacing them was too expensive. I've read stories from so many people about something happening to their phone and they didn't get insurance. The repair cost was way more than they would have paid if they enrolled in the plan in the beginning.

Finally took the phone in. Glad it rebooted a few times while there. Long story short, they ordered me a replacement and it might take up to a week to get it. No problem since I have a backup smartphone to use.

Evo refuses to turn on

The last screen I saw was an android out of the box. I pulled the battery and now my device refuses to turn on. Bricked?
Also, if I send the device back to Sprint and claim that the OTA did this, will they know I was messing with root and roms? And how can I prevent this?

what exactly were you doing that led to this "bricking"?
Android out of the box that sounds like it was writting the radio if the battery was pulled that's a really bad thing
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I flashed Fresh's 0.5.3 along with the new radio and noob's JIT patch all in one shot. Rebooted, hung at the Android out of the box. And I battery pulled.
I called Sprint and they told me to take it down to a service center. I'm looking through my microSD from remnants of rooting and flashing. Do you think they can salvage what's on the system ROM?

oh wow.. dude, that's a bit of a big bite. pulling the battery may have been the cause.
what sprint is most likely going to do is boot into the bootloader and wipe user data (hard reset). you can pull the "the ota update killed it" reason (as i told them before i got mine to start working again). you can't turn it on at all??
Refuses to power on or boot?
Power: does it charge? Or indicate that it does?
Keep holding power while putting in battery.
Connect usb cable with battery out of the phone.
Boot: hold vol down + power together to boot into boot.

if you plug it in the usb, is there a light to show that it's charging?
No LED light to indicate that it's charging. Not even the slightest hint that it's still alive. If I could've gotten to the bootloader all would've been well.
I'm worried that when I bring it to Sprint, they'll salvage what's on the ROM and realize that I've been rooting and flashing. I hope the ROM is unreadable. Maybe that's the reason why it won't turn on.

yea, it does sound like it. just to give you a heads up though, evos are pretty sold out everywhere. i went to the corporate store here in nj and i called them up as well, no dice. they are sold out.
I'll wait as long as I get a free replacement
EDIT: Back to my dreaded Samsung Instinct.
this just happened to me.
did op get an ETA on a new phone?
I called Sprint tech support and they told me to bring it in to a Sprint Service Repair store (Use the store locator and find one that repairs). I told them the update did it. Luckily, they had a replacement in stock. They took it out of a refurbished looking box, but it seems to be brand new . I hate to cheat the system and I sort of feel guilty about it. But that guilt is overridden by the fact that I have a brand new Evo in my hands .

[Q] Evo Power Button Not Working anymore

so recently my powerbutton on my evo has stopped working for some reason. in order for me to turn in on i have to press the button multiple times until the phone finally turns the screen back on. When i try to turn it off for some reason it goes into the menu with : shut down, airplane mode, silent, etc.
My question is, how could i get a new phone from Sprint if i have to, or
fix this problem if anyone else is having the same problem.
Do i have to unroot my phone before i take it in?
Well first I would like to tell you that when powering on your phone you should hold the button down then let it go it should come on. If not then it might be a problem there. But as for the menu coming up on shut down that is normal every phone does that. Even some other androids. I don't really know if you should get another phone yet maybe just switch up the way you are trying to boot it and see if that helps.

sorry, when i meant turn on, i meant just turning on the screen.
Ive also tried pulling the battery and putting it back in, but the phone turns on instantly as soon as the battery goes back in. Im not sure if the Button is stuck or if some dust got in it or something, but as for the menu, when i just press the button to turn the screen off again, the phone would stall and then the power menu would pop up
I believe your button is stuck. I had the same exact problem, I wound up going to Sprint, and sat there for two hours as they told me a hard reboot would fix it smh. They would up just giving me a new one.

Did you have insurance on it? I'm having the same issue, but don't currently have insurance. Just curious if they are going to make me send it in to HTC for repairs, or if they can give me a replacement in store.
The power button on my EVO stopped working today. I do not have insurance on the phone, but my local Sprint store just informed me that they will attempt to fix the phone for $35. If they aren't able to fix the phone, they will order a new one for me.
Hope that helps!!
If you want to replace the phone the first thing you have to do is unroot. Sprint might charge you 35 dollars to replace it. (without insurance) They might not though. They'll probably replace it.

So I unrooted my phone, took it into a sprint store and they were going to give me a replacement. Said it would take about 5-7 business days as they are backordered, and had zero in stock. Unfortunately, I'm in the process of moving cross country, and the store can only order a phone to be shipped to their store...not to your address. I called cust service and they said to go back to any sprint store and they could/would order one to my home and I could mail back my current one upon receipt of the new one. Went to another store and told them this, and they said they couldn't! I told them my situation, the CSR asked around in the repair area, and they ended up having 1 EVO in stock that someone else was supposed to get as a swap on theirs, but ended up getting a different phone before the replacement arrived. So they did a swap on site! Cost me $35 plus tax, but I walked out the door with a (what looked to be) new EVO.
Just FYI, when I walked into the store, another person in line was also having issues with the power button on her EVO too.

I had to take mine to the local sprint store to get a replacement. I didn't have insurance, so it cost me $35. But my "new" replacement phone hasn't had any issues!
I had a similar issue myself , My power button was starting to sink into the actual body of the phone . It was random when it would stop working , then work fine after a while . I unrooted took it to a Sprint store where they told me they wouldnt look at it till it had completely failed . Since it being my only phone I was like "yeah fat chance I paid for a working phone and I will have a working phone especially since I pay you people for insurance" . Called Sprint they referred me to their technical support line ,I explained the issue and said they would send a phone . Next day I had a refurbished phone on the door step but heres the good part LOL . I checked the counters . It made 2 calls and no data transferred , and the body was spotless . I think it was just a return or soemthign and they slapped refurb on it even though it was still technically new .

Yes I did unroot my phone. For all they know it was stock. Also did a factory reset before I gave it to them just so all my info was off the phone.
Mine is starting to have the same issue. Gotta press the button multiple to turn on or off. When u put the battery in it turns on automaticly. I have insurance but sprint KNOWS IM ROOTED. My stupidity, I had the salesman put a screen protecter on and I got a txt msg using the miui rom and the screen turned on... My brother watched him type in cpu "user rooted". What would yall do? Can you possibly fix it yourself?
I personally would unroot the phone and go to another store if it is possible in regards to the power button issue . Make sure you restore to stock condition and pay attention to the radios as well as the Pri on your phone when you restore back to stock. Thats what I did , I wiped everything SDcard and all everything was cleaned . I would then go to the store and state your power button is not working correctly . If they pull it up and say user is rooted . You have a clean stock phone , hell download some apps from market just to make it look good . Personally I cant see that being an issue but better to play it safe . Also rooting a phone does not cause a physical part of the phone to fail . Its like saying putting an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle will void your warranty if your O2 sensor fails under warranty . They are two seperate things. Rooting doesnt cause a switch to fail .
I have the 2.15 radio and 1.77 prl. I havnt updated my radio since I put fresh 3 on a long time ago. Yea I kno ots a hardware issue and I read somewhere that sprint would fix hw issues even with root. Not 100% sure on that tho. Its not a real big problem yet but it figures a week after sprint foumd out I rooted my phone I would run into a problem.
My phone's power button stopped working just today. Is it still possible to unroot without using the power button since that's how you select items in recovery/HBOOT?

[Q] re: getting a replacement phone for free?

ok, so i finally bricked my phone .. and i need to get a replacement phone.
the impression i always got from the forums was that i just go to the Spring store and ask for a replacement, and show'em that my phone is "broken".. today i went in and they gave me a number to call (888.211.4727) and when i called/explained it.. they said i'd have to pay "only" $100 for the replacement since i had the protection plan...
is that how it works?? is there a way to get my phone replaced for free? i guess i'm in shock bc that's how i thought it worked for several other members here.
any suggestions?
Try a different store. Sometimes other stores don't care.

do you have any suggestions on what to say? called sprint and they were just saying "we can't do anything about it Asurion is who does our insurance, blah blah blah"
does anyone have a experience (victories) getting their bricks replaced for free?
Tell them you need to do a warranty replacement. Not an insurance replacement. They might refer you to samsung not sure how sprint handles that stuff these days.
cd's or tapes?
My screen stopped working when I touched it and I had a crack in the plastic around the screen. At first the Sprint tech said the screen stopped working because of the crack in the plastic whih, according to him, is the accelerometer. I didn't get pissed. I just told him that the screen stopped working before that and if he put another accelerometer on it, the screen still wouldn't work. I ended up getting everything replaced except my motherboard so I basically have a new phone with original motherboard so I know what overclock/undervolt will work. I would take it to another store and be nice and play dumb. It worked for me and I didn't pay 1 cent.

Did you try
1)taking battery out.
2) plug in USB
3) hold keypad "1" and "power"
(note this process has battery out of phone entire time.)
i have an interesting update...
i dug around more posts on the forum -- and learned to pull the sdcard out, AND the battery... left it out a lil bit... now it'll be back into download mode, although it seems my odin attempts have been failing so far (the screen turned all yellow almost immediately on the first attempt... now this second attempt has gone a lil further and the screen just turned all blue)..
i think this is progress?
UPDATE!!! WOW!!!
i just re-incarnated my phone. i almost want to cry. for real!!
Now I'm curious what you guys would do... do you think my phone's suffered some hardware damage from all that (and therefore should play it safe).. or do you think it's safe to root, flash srf all the way up and try to flash genocide1.1final again?
i almost feel like i don't fear bricks any longer LOL
I had almost the exact same thing happen to my phone as you. The old vision kernel bricked my phone, took it into the sprint store and they were going to replace it but it was going to take about 4 days to do so. I screwed around with it and finally got it into download mode after a while.
I don't think there is any problem with you running everything just the way you have been. I can't see how there could have been any hardware damage unless you stepped on it or dropped it a long way or something. I would say its safe to go ahead and root it and continue to have fun with it.

I don't recall anyone bricking on Genocide or Twilight Zone. 99% of the time you can Odin back to stock. It only takes 3 min 30 seconds. I would say stay rooted and have fun. I was nervous for a bit but I can't see myself going back to stock

i was running srf1.1.1 with genocide1.0...
did a backup, and wiped cache/dalvik x3 and flashed genocide1.1final. then when i rebooted it stayed on the samsung startup screen for too long... kind of reminds me of when i tried to flash cwm3.0.2.5
so i pulled battery, and 3fingered into cwm. noticed it was still orange (3.0.0.6) -- restored my nandroid, rebooted... and i'm still getting stuck on the samsung startup screen.
i hate think this but i'll probably have to Odin back to stock and build my way back up to srf1.1.1 and then restore..
any ideas what went wrong? i really want to try on this kernel but i don't want to go through that whole cycle again!

you possibly had a bad flash of the genocide 1.1 kernel. or maybe even a bad dl. i would say re-download the .zip for the genocide 1.1 and try again. i am running srf 1.1.1 with genocide 1.1. imo one of the best rom/kernel combos out here.
puhahahaa... i'm back w srf1.1.1 and now have genocide1.1final running... for some reason when i 3finger salute i still get cwm3.0.0.6 tho -- don't know if i'm doing it wrong??

[Q] Does anyone have any experience with TEP and faulty phones?

I've had my Epic 4G Touch for well over a year and a month ago I noticed the power button was starting to feel "spongy". It still worked but it lacked that crisp feeling when you pressed it down and released it. This afternoon however, after flashing FI27, my power button no longer works whatsoever. I doubt it was the ROM and more due to the amount of times I've held this button down for recovery access, download mode, etc.
So the power button doesn't work, phone starts automatically when I remove the battery and put it back in. Otherwise the phone is in near-perfect condition and its not rooted.
Anyone know if TEP is going to cover this for free? I've looked online at some resources for TEP and everything is vague or above my level of reading between the lines.
Thanks in advance.
I just had this happen to me last week actually. Just plug the charger in and it'll wake up the phone. Set it back to stock unrooted and bring it into Sprint. They'll either try to fix it or give you a new phone. I had a replacement phone that night for $0.
You might have to pull the battery a few times, but you still should be able to get into download mode
Sounds like the internal button is either stuck or broken, if you take it to a repair center they might be able to fix it for you. However idk what cost would be if any, I dont keep any for of "insurance" on my phone, if i break it I swap to one of the others I have til I buy a new one. I tend to keep my phones mint and don't want to pay for a refurbished one when i have a bunch laying in a drawer.

I'm on FI27 w/ the newest AGAT kernel but just in case I used Chainfires' Triangle Away to get rid of the yellow triangle at boot. Outside of volume down + power button I don't know another way to get into download mode and since my power button is inop I'm kind of stuck.
Do you know of another way to get back into download mode? I have the self-extracting Odin file for EL29 just waiting to erase all evidence of root.
EDIT: Nevermind. Turns out the button is just stuck. I put the battery back in while holding volume down and it gave me download mode access. That solves one problem, lol.
If your capable, you can crack it open and clean the internal button. If its just sticky that should fix it. While you're in there you can look for actual damage which will tell you to go ahead and take it in for repair.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to do that, though I'm sure YouTube has a couple videos detailing how-to. I'll give it a looksee and if it doesn't scare me away I'll give it a shot. If its something I can do, might as well.
Does it still work now after booting back up? Mine didn't work but for some reason if i hit volume up+power i could get into download mode. But when it was actually booted, it wouldnt work at all, nor would it work inside CWM. Weird thing is when I took it into Sprint the touchscreen started having issues too. So that's probably another reason why I just got a replacement.

It works fine outside of the power button. I have recovery and download mode access, touchscreen is operable and nothing out of the norm seems to be going on. It's disturbing to say the least.
Wtf I got this issue after flashing Fi25 rom? Maybe its a bug? It had been working days before and spontaneously stopped working.

This power button problem just happened to mine friday i took it to a repair store they were rude and refused to fix it told me i needed to use my insurance... so i made a call and within 15 min and only 1 transfer (shockingly) to customer care they sent me out a replacement at no cost i received this afternoon and currently trying to put a custom rom on it.. i had the same issues as you and it was hardware related a smack against a table resolved it atrandom and that phone was also stock..
I have been with sprint nearly 10 years and with several calls to customer care you can get alot done.. if one rep dont help call back and deal with another.. I have been 4 months past due with nearly an $800 bill at one point and still no restrictions i have also have a few older phones and some windows phones replaced at no charge in the past but that took a little more work then this one...Ive was even able to get them to credit my account $300 instead of using my 2 upgrades on phones... just call be polite if that dont work try again with another rep..
btw the sprint store i took it to didnt note it on my account if they tell you you must goto a store kindly refuse saying you dont have time.. if the battle seems endless ask for a supervisor twice..
Where did you call to? Was your phone cracked or physically damaged? Shiii I want a free phone too!

It's things like that that make it harder for others who actually need replacements to get them.

Read my comment, i need a replacement as well, by lock/power button isnt working either.
I went to my local Sprint store this afternoon and apparently I don't have TEP on my phone. Last month I had an upgrade but I'm happy with my E4GT so I let my wife use it so she could get the EVO LTE. We did this through Best Buy Mobile. My wife has a friend that works there so it's where *she* does all her cellphone business. For some reason my TEP was cancelled on my E4GT upon upgrade and unbeknownst to me for the last month and a half I've had no insurance. :/
I called Sprint customer support and explained what happened and in 3-business days TEP will be reinstated on my phone, no charge, and all will be well in the world. The guy at the Sprint store also said had I had TEP this issue would be fixed via direct-exchange at no-cost to me.
I also tried fixing it myself but I got scared when the couldn't separate the screen from the case and gave up before I borked it.

[Q] Phone just randomly bootlooped

Running custom ROM's isn't something new to me, however I'm stumped on this one.
I was running the latest AOKP without a hitch. Been two days in fact. Unplugged this morning, was typing a text message and BAM, phone rebooted (vibrated) and constantly reboots.
I took the battery out, tried again.... same outcome. I can get it into recovery, but 3-4 seconds into it, it starts it's rebooting process again.
The only thing I know to do is ODIN back to stop, and format internal storage.
Anyone ran into this problem or seen this recently?
Thanks,
It sounds like you have a stuck power button . Tty cleaning out the power button's hole and if that doesn't help or fix it, send your phone in for repair.

That is the same thing I said, originally. I've taken a part a lot of phones in my day, but do not want to void the errr.... 'warranty'. So, I just contacted Tmobile and they are sending another one. I did put it back to stock, using ODIN. Do not ask me how I got it to actually stay on long enough to use download mode, but I did.
The bad part is Tmobile currently has this phone backlogged for 2-4 weeks. So, Asurion cannot even get me a phone until then. I'm going to call tomorrow and raise holy hell with Tmobile and see what they do.
How would you go about cleaning this out? The button still has the pressed in feeling, i can even hear the spring back click.
