BAD MOVE: Sony without Ericson!? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a guess it is, I have a Xperia Pro, it is a very modded and tweaked ICS phone, while my mate having a Xperia Arc (GB not modded, and I personally just tweaked it a little using Pimp my Rom)
and GB is soo much better! we're having same antutu at 4800+ @1GH plus great camera focus, a noticeably great pictures with bravia engine and aint really know if Bravia Engine in my device is working, plus when were playing games on his arc, aint got lags (after i tweaked it) damnit, maybe its about Ericson's 10 years of experience in the industry
well, unfornutely Sony were really forced to do a "stake buying" from Ericson, according to wikipedia.org, for which the Sony Ericson has some "money" problems despite of great sales ( my mom used to buy me sony ericson products, and my mom was not that techie, she's just know that Sony Ericson are way better against other mobile brands)
but sony must've taken ericson's developers so that the Solid Rock GB must have been now Solid Rock ICS

It's not because Ericsson programers were better its just that Arc is too old and weak for ICS, also updating old devices is not profitable for phone manufacturers. I'm sure that even if Sony Ericsson was still with us ICS would be as ****ty as it is right now.

lol. I have never seen such a funny, thoughtless thread in XDA before.
Firstly, those developers who made your Gingerbread are the same people who made your ICS. It's clearly stated that your phone might under perform due to increased specification of ICS. I can guarantee my Xperia Ion is as smooth as when it had Gingerbread. Secondly, Sony sold more phones than Sony Ericsson.
And finally, it's Sony Ericsson not Ericson. LOL.

And if you hate ICS so much then you can downgrade to GB easily.

If you are talking about G1 then this point is retarded because JB was ported to this device only to show that its possible. It runs at 5fps and is unusable. Seriously you think that if my microwave can boot JB then Arc is capable of running ICS smoothly? It doesn't make any sense.

Well last time I've checked there was a You Tube video of a guy that managed to boot 4.1.2 on G1 and it was laggy as hell so I don't believe that a device with 192MB of RAM and 500MHz CPU is able to run JB smoothly. Clean, debloated CM10 takes 300MB of my RAM to run. Guys from YouMobile.org should start a site about gardening because apparently they don't know **** about phones.

I think you should use your freaking brains before attacking.
Sony Mobile software development department remains at Sweden. Here's the irony, you said I should research, and I did and the most funny part? You are 100% factually incorrect.

SONY IS NOW 3rd phone manifacture ,only more selled pohnes are samsung and apple , its same with all phones , they bring only 1 update , or no updates to never android verzion ....

WOW!
anyway, heard the name Kunimasa Suzuki? CEO of Sony Mobile? cum`n dude, of course u misinterpret the word "JAPANESE" as All the developers are all japanese, they may have different nationalities of Coders/Programmers, what im saying is, the "HEAD" the one that makes the planning! the execution on how everything will be done, not really the "coders" or the literal programmers.
u know im a Fan of Sony/Xperia, and im a die hard fan, i researched everything on what really happened
Sony has 2 or more developments centers, the one is based on tokyo, the one is based on Lund, Sweden, developments are not just for xperia, its for all Sony Products, swedish coders are not that good, compare to russia, india, united states, ofcourse Sony wants better! so they could hire any nationality they want, japanese were good, but they're having hard time programming cuz they have a different software development programs and its in japanese, u get the point?
one thing, u want to fight? im not into fighting, fighting is not that cool for me plus please dont argue, if u really wanna argue, not on me, i saw your other post on other threads some of them are in "OFFENSIVE" mode, i think u get the point.

Nope, do not wish to fight you.
I'm still stand by my words. Sony Mobile's software team is still the same. Though that might be some structural changes, the bulk of it remains the same. So what Sony Mobile's CEO is a Japanese? Is he the one programming? It's clearly stated that Sony Mobile's software development team remains at Sweden. It's awkward and not correct to fire the whole team and re hire another group.
Cheers!
Edit: btw, it is not that Sony software suck, simply, Xperia Arc is too weak to handle ICS. My Xperia Ion runs it smoother than a melted ice cream.

Sony to buy out Sony Ericsson?

I've been reading in different pundits that Sony is going to take over Ericsson's part in SE. The idea is pretty much defined in that Sony wants to have a tighter integration between its media production and consumption systems.
Do you see this as a positive movement? On the one hand, it'd be great to have more functions by having our Play and other future devices connect with Sony products. On the other hand, Sony hasn't shown much love for the hacking and modding community...
I've been reading this all day and waiting for updates.
Well, I do believe Sony provides much more support and stuff for it's devices, that's be a plus. It seems a good news overall.
Sony doesn't like much hacking in their other devices like PS3 etc, that just makes their devices open to piracy.
But in case of mobile phones running Android, i do believe they won't be foolish enough to attempt to stop hacking.
If they do, I hope they don't treat the developers/community like they do in PS3
All I want is tight integration with my PSN account, and to be able to play the dozens of PS1 games I have already paid for.
If this does happen I doubt their policies will change on the mobile side. They did just hand out 20 devices to grassroots devs. I'm sure that wasn't just the Ericsson side doing whatever they want, but both being ok with it. Especially because a couple of the devices have the Playstation logo on them.
Means **** tbh
I LOVE ps3,and i hate the hackers who JB it!
I LOVE hackin and development for SErricson phones, its amasing
Sony and SErricson might have a bit of a conflict...
This rumour has popped up almost every year since 2008.
I hope it doesn't happen especially now that Sony Ericsson has worked its ass off to get itself out of a ditch.
Sony would probably release phones with nicer materials and their flagship would be a lot more powerful than anything SE would release, but their prices would probably be 2X that of current SE prices.
Sony is no longer the company that charges a lot more then it's competition. Their quality is still up there but their prices had dropped drastically over the years. I'm sure when they do take over, they will keep the existing ceo.
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
wait doesnt sony already OWN it?
i Mean it is the SONY ericsson
Bad idea
The latest software update for Sony's PS3 license and agreement terms states that consumers will give up their right to be able to sue Sony for any faults in their system. That means if your personal details or account information gets stolen you'll be the one that loses everything.
Imagine having this on your SE device if their official software update bricked your nonvodied phone you'd have to pay for everything! SE better hold its ground cause Sony is only for the business not for the people
This could be really good news for Xperia PLAY's dev support.
...but absolutely disastrous news for the marketing decisions made for it.

[Q]Why is there no OSS solution for unlocking branded Plays?

I'm just pointing out what feels like the elephant in the room here. Excuse me if I'm out of line.
I bought a Play coming from the HTC Eris (CDMA Hero), and the Eris is an amazing phone. I still lurk on the forums (and really sad it got shuffled, but out with the old, in with the new.) The community there really extended its life far beyond what Verizon gave it (it officially died with 2.1, but right now mine is running CM7 2.3.7.) Overall it was a great community to get introduced to Android with, and I'm very appreciative of all the devs that worked hard to make the Eris experience much, much more amazing.
So, I purchased my R800x in October, and I was excited. New phone, new community; I was really pumped to see what everyone here was cooking up. But we seem to be stuck in a holding pattern of some sort. I can definitely see there are a lot of talented people very eager to dev and cook up roms, but I'm finding the same loop everywhere: "Can we unlock bootloaders yet" maybe "CM7?" no.
Now, I don't expect anyone to do anything simply because this is here. That's not the point of the question. The question is (twofold): Why is there no open source boot loader unlock for all Xperia Plays? I went through the dev forum archives and can't really find anything concrete as to why phones like the R800x don't have one. And if there is an issue (or even if there is not), how can I help? I want to get involved. I don't have much experience with unlocking bootloaders, but I have gone through the Android source, and feel I'm moderately familiar with how Android works.

Same here, i was introduced brilliantly into the community when i bought my galaxy s, the development page was packed everyday of different stuff, with the play no ones trying.... but some people are. You can unlock your boot loader but it does cost a small amount of money, check the development section. Im 14 & don't really have a paypal account so i can't unlock mine either lol. We can't really help, were just 2 people out of 7,000,000,000 :L
People, the fact that the Play has few devs behind it is simple: sales. The Play has been a big flop. That is the mere reason why we're left with little support in comparison to other phones. Forget locked or unlocked bootloaders, open or closed operative systems or whatever, it's not relevant: if a phone/tablet/whatever sells well, it will be tinkered with. Commercial developers want money, amateurs are glory hounds eager to be like Darky or Geohot, and some just want to help selflessly, but the motivations of the three have sales as the common point.

Well its the best thing that ever happened in mobile gaming, compared to n gage anyway lol
I came from an Eris as well, handed it down to my niece, she is still using with 2.3.7.
I got my play back in June. In early August a dev named ashergray did figure out how to unlock the bootloader. Mine was one of the first 5-10 that they did. Lucky for me, it was free.
I am not sure if the devs involved were contacted by verizon, i think i read that somewhere, but they stopped doing it.
Right now theres a guy doing it for like 20 bucks. Kinda sucks but whatever.
Your not missing all that much yet, right now I am running Doom Kernel with the UK generic firmware. Its better then stock verizon, but not by leaps and bounds.
I think the noted difference between this community and the Eris community, is that the Eris was one of the first driod phones and it was dirt F'n cheap! Now that verizon has this going for 50 bucks, maybe we will get an increase in our community and dev population.
Oh and in general, gamers are arrogant assholes. You will see alot of that in here too.
Who would I contact about unlocking the bootloader on my R800x? I am willing to Donate to get it done. Thanks.

The way we got our early unlock was through a workaround in Sony Ericsson's standard unlock web interface. R800i gets a free bootloader unlock from Sony themselves. All you need is your IMEI number, go to their website, and type it in. It give you an unlock code and instructions on how to use it.
R800x doesn't have an IMEI, it has an MEID. The website wouldn't accept numbers with a letter in it (imei are all numbers). However, it was only the form on the website that filtered the input. Ashergrey found a way to feed the MEID directly to the unlocking program, and he was able to produce unlock codes. Sony eventually caught wind of this exploit and patched their website so now there's no free workaround to unlock.
The guy who you have to pay to unlock is allejandrissimo. You only have to pay to unlock because he has to buy credits for a sony ericsson program to do the unlocks. He is charging for the amount of the credits. This is currently the only way to do a bootloader unlock.
And honestly, this phone isn't selling well because it really isn't that great a phone. The controller is brilliant, don't get me wrong, but its a single core device with 384 meg of ram and maybe 512 of internal storage that came out at the same time as the droid x2 and similar devices, with 16 GIG of internal storage and 512 to 1GIG of ram, plus dual core to boot. And it came out at the same pricepoint. Seriously, my wife has a droid2 global, and its has 2 GIG of internal storage.
If xperia play had come out 6 months earlier, it would have been a big hit. Sony botched this one because, like most of their corporate marketing, they believe that the gamer portion of their population is stupid and will buy anything with the "playstation" name attached to it. Need I remind you of the initial PS3 marketing strategies? I almost didn't buy this phone because of the bad rep Sony had with me, related to how they treated their PS3 customers. Ultimately, my inner gamer won out.
Here's to hoping for an xperia play 2 that's got a decent screen, decent internal memory, and decent ram.

You have a point with the ram and Internal Storage, but Single core devices aren't really needed yet, Look at Dead space, GTA and other high graphic games, Off course it would be nice to have a Dual core but imo the xperia play could have been better if they put more into it (HDMI, Better screen...)
I agree that in reality it isn't a big deal. But with consumer products, perception drives reality. The phone was seen as being "lesser", and thus doesn't sell well.

Dual core or not , it's still among the best , but remember no games or even softwares are near being made for dual core devices anyways . All made the same some optimum (HD) for certain ones i.e Xperia play among others. And so far as the HDMI it's believed it's built-in , just not user friendly with current update .

But all in all, I love this post because even I said the same, the xperia is the only android todate that's a pain in the rear about everything , simple things are gigntic with it. I remember the G1 could even install recovery from it's own terminal emulator , seriously , even the G1 could do such a basic function , but you turn left or right , it's the same excuses everywhere it seems no one really knowing anything

I've compiled a whole thread about the whole resources at your disposal about rooting, unlocking, flashing stuff, and so on; I've asked mods to make it a sticky thread without an answer of any kind; and now recently I've been reading more and more comments about how "nobody knows anything concrete" or "there are no threads about this stuff".
I give up. It's just pointless.
*edit* it seems that my query to the mood never went to them. I'm quite puzzled about the why.

Agree with ya logseman big time
I also agree this phone is a good gamer phone.
but I also agree that the community or lack of one is really disappointing since I came from droid X community. there was so much going on there and compared to this its like comparing night to day.
Still , it's pathetic , because other phones even with a huge marketing profits weren't as hard nor complicated as the Zeus, I.E G1 , though it was a commercial success it still wasn't a pain to do anything , fact of the matter is , with or without development , the Zeus is still "roadblocked" compared to other androids which a newbie could easily.tweak.

I haven't linked ease of modding and sales in any way. I'm just saying that if a phone is successful in the market, it will be modded. The big name Galaxies are ROM whores that you can Sim unlock for free and they have lots of roms, tweaks and stuff... But then the iThings are very hard to mod yet they have huge quantities of stuff for jailbroken units.
Maemo phones were really easy to mod, webOS devices were seemingly hard to break, and both have little content in comparison to the former two.
It boils down to sales: we as users gamble on the popularity of a device: Galaxies and iThings have millions and millions of users, while maemo and webOS have only thousands.

[Q] any hope to play psp and ps2 games

hi friends
is there any hope to play psp and ps2 games via new version of playstation pocket or any other emulator?
i've searched on google and find so many forums about it , furthermore there is so many opinion about it.last week , i read a thread and op said that : porting psp games on xperia play is in progress by sony ?!?
i don't know how much that is real , but it's really appreciate to share your knowledge about that to me/others
thanks you for your real information
No such real info to be fair
I expected the PSP games to be ported to but I dunno haven't seen anything apart from that god of war clip so I'm assuming its not coming.
But I wish it did.
Dissidia would be fun
from tapatalk on xperia play.
I wouldn't think so, since the Vita is coming out by Sony with cell phone abilites, I don't think the sony mobile team would want to add in all those features, but thats just my opinion.

No it won't, it has 3G for online capibilities, the only way the vita can make calls is with something like skype, and as microsoft now own them thats unlikely.

Microsoft owning skype doesn't change anything, the people running it are the same. Itll just be driven to specific platforms like windows phone where its embedded
It'll still work on non microsoft product
from tapatalk on xperia play.
I could of sworn the Vita was going to be Sonys attempt.
Guess I mis understood the article completely. I do know it will be AT&T only for 3G :/ which is very lame.
the sdk what sony released was for cross platform gaming so games that are made for the vita would work on xperia play if im correct =/ ?

the SDK contained some cross platform api's but imo the best we can hope for is the sort of cross platform Xbox and Windows phone has with Microsofts XNA SDK.

WT? Sony makes comment "Nobody relly cares for Windows Phone"
What is Sony? And why would we care what a bleeding company says?
Oh right, they made good stuff 20 years ago.

LOL more like 30 years agao, the Walkman and the Watchman were it back then. LOL.
I am sorry but Sony is nobody. They are just hater who can't make a buck over the smartphone market-share.
I care.
My name isn't nobody.
Im happy because they do only crap phones. A friend of mine works at the 3 store in my town and there is alot of complains about the Xperia phones, they have bugs and laggs...
But serious stupid thing to say especially now when Nokias lumia series is doing so good in Europe..

In Europe people buy Nokia not WindowsPhone, so thats bad for MS. WP is not the selling point, but the Nokia brand instead. Sony is wack, their last good phone was SE K800.

Make that the K850, I loved the glow around the camera lens.
Anyway, its their loss. PS3 sales lower than Xbox 360, not to mention PSVita not really that successful and pocket-friendly. Xperia line is crap, too many bloatware. SEN, again, not really successful. So far all their efforts are poured directly to mobile and gaming tech, yet they cant seem to reach their goal.
But like they said, WHO CARES!
If they were to adopt WP, they would be as successful as Nokia, well at least HTC. Then again, too bad theyre poor now to buy WP licences... but WHO CARES! We have Nokia, a company that's so popular, everyone knows it.

Do you have some sales numbers I missed for nokia in eu ?
Sony who?, Sony really has not made a product that has made me stop and look since the ps3, they use to be a leader in high quality consume electronics but the quality has dropped steadily over the years. Take for instance there HIFI rang such as the sony multiki, on the other hand the ps3 was made from relatively expensive hardware that was way too hard to program for and as a result has not performed half as well as the pervious generations.
I don’t know what is about the experia brand but I simply don’t like any of the phones, perhaps it is my current perception of the Sony brand or the fact the sony GUI on android is horrible or that I don’t find any of the phones to aesthetically pleasing. Sony seems to be stuck in the 2004 bubble of industrial design where chrome and space age designs were in.
Either way the company is haemorrhaging money and either need to compete on price of differentiate them self again perhaps again as a high quality manufacture or going though the rout of windows phone.
Now thats funny
Sony are a disgrace, split from ericsson, trying to make a comeback.........hoping beyond hope that they are able to drag their sorry asses over the line.
Sorry Sony but i sure as hell wont be buying your mobile products even if you do go with WP as an OS, i'm sure that every other person from the Xperia X1 forums or indeed anyone who has owned an Xperia will agree whole heartedly. The build quality (abhorrent at best), customer service (refusal to believe even after thousands had posted proof, that their crappy chassis fail was a manufacturing issue) and general all round experience with Sony over the last few years has soured me from even contemplating as much.........set aside the complete shambles with the PS3 a while back and their fantastic apology gift of a couple of crappy platinum games.
You just want to release cheap garbage and overcharge massively for it.........SO HELL NO!!.......F*£K YOU SONY!!!
...........and back on point, Sony are not exaclty qualified on any level any more to pass comment. Since when were they suddenly "in touch with the people"
I'm a big fan of windows phone but let's be honest....what he said is not that wrong....up to now windows phone has made next to no impact on the smartphone user market.
MS has completely failed at marketing this awesome product....I love being different but if they don't kick the promotion up a notch, I'll be different with a product with no future...

I agree 100% with your first paragraph. If we go down the line everyone is going down in this thread, we are saying if we are not in a better position we cannot be critical. Just because Sony is not doing well does not mean what they are saying is wrong. Windows Phone sure would not fix Sony right now so it is not an option for them.
Now the second part. Did Google do a wonderful job marketing Android in the early stages? With the Phil Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg G1 ads? I do not believe they did. But they had a product that everyone else needed at the time. The rest was left up to the carriers and the oems.
While Sony isn't wrong in what they said (based on market share so far), its pretty irresponsible of them to say it publicly like that. Especially since it would benefit them to remain on good terms with MS in the computing and tablet arena.
If they ever need to start making Windows Phones in the future (assuming WP does well over time, and Android ect doesn't pan out long term) they are not going to have an upper hand at the negotiating table.
That being said, in the present, nobody really cares about Sony TV's, computers, Phones. The only thing they have going for them right now is the play station.

I agree. In life you should never burn your bridges. Apple said never again to nVidia and now they are right back there. Sony doing a Windows Phone with Xbox Live in it was always quite a bitter pill for them I would imagine. The first review of the Xperia S I read was not so kind about the build, but Sony is onto something with the look of it. Too many poor decisions by Sony. Nintendo is the king of mobile consoles and struggled to sell the initially priced 3DS outside of Japan. Sony follows suit with the more expensive than the entry level console handheld?

You sure about that?
To all those who are saying "who cares"; Sony are still very relevant in the smartphone market.
Their Xperia lines are selling well in Asia, and latest figures show it has shipped/sold nearly 20m Android handsets worldwide; this is more units than all WP7 phone manufacturers put together.
Sony make nice looking and feeling hardware; the Xperia Ray is one of the nicest smart-phones I've ever played with, hardware wise (not sure about the OS), and having a desirable WP7 fashion phone would be a huge boost.

Shipped or Sold? Nokia shipped about over a million in a month of lumia launch, doesn't mean it sold them.

Shipped or Sold is one of my favorite points about wp7. There are no hard sales numbers, anywhere (please prove me wrong, someone).
Apple jumps up and down with X million iphones sold FIRST DAY ON SALE, and google shows X00,000 activations, per day.
Meanwhile, from microsoft, nothing.
The point is, microsoft has to prove that people do care... with sales numbers. Or maybe they don't. Apparently they do not yet...

Xperia Ion due in June for AT&T!?

So I have been checking the web constantly for the Ion release date. Though I have yet to find something concrete, something caught my eye yesterday. I did a google search for Xperia Ion and when the description came up for Sony's website, it said "Coming in June only from AT&T." Well I did the same search this morning so I could take a screen shot of what I saw and now the description says, "Coming Soon only from AT&T." I bet what I saw was accidentally put in the meta description then taken down. Hope this is correct. I'm due for upgrade in June and I really want the Ion. The One X is my second choice, but I really want that HDMI out!
Hope someone here has some inside information.
I figured out if you continuously hit refresh, the ad description updates. Here's the screenshot.

S3 CPU and Gingerbread? No thanks. Sony should at least have had an.S4 to appeal better vs phones like the One X and SGS3. Average consumer will prolly be swayed my the mp count but still, it should have been better overall

I disagree, partially. I really wished Sony would learn from previous experience and wouldn't be late to the quadcore party or at least come up with a 2012 SoC during 2012, but in the other hand some people will prefer the design and camera over other ubiquitous phones by other manufacturers.
Glad to see someone out there cares about this phone. I honestly expect the 4.0 update to be ready within a month of the release of the phone. I can't stand touchwiz or sense. I'm using a captivate atm. I immediately flashed a rom to get rid of touchwiz. I however have my x10 running wolf breaks tweaked stock 2.3 rom because I actually like the Sony UI. Besides, no phone on the market will have a camera comparable to the ion. 1.5ghz dual core seems like plenty of fire power for me. My captivate is smooth with ICS and a single core, don't see how the Sony won't do just as well, especially after the ICS update. The One X is my backup plan, but I really want that ION!

I wouldn't recommend HTC, their build quality and service are not comparable to Samsung, Apple or Sony.
Sammy always has the hottest hardware but their phones look plasticky and Touchwiz is not my taste. Matter of personal choices.
I'm currently using the Arc with ICS update.
Wow. That phone almost makes me want to go back to AT&T. GBs not that big of a deal, hopefully devs will jump on that phone pretty quickly and get some custom ROMs going...

Hi Orb3000, nice to see you again
You must reconsider your decission because the OP is NOT a question but a statement. The guy found an interesting slip in google advertising system which confirmed a June release date for the aforementioned phone.
Whatsmore, many recognized tech blogs acknowledged his finding and published notes about it, some even linking here to xda-devs as the source of the finding.
Just got my Xperia Ion! Here's a couple of photos next to my Xperia S, along with the Antutu benchmark!
Where did you get it from?
I'm hoping they announce it's release on AT&T very soon!
U got an S and an Ion??? SHOWOFF!!! eb

It's amazing to me how little AT&T is pushing this phone. You go to the AT&T website and you have to dig to find it (whereas the one x and the sgIII are on the front page). I understand those are higher end devices, but it seems as if AT&T doesn't really care at all about what is a pretty decent phone. Even when I walked into the AT&T store, they looked at me like I was crazy for asking for the ion (maybe they forgot how to sell anything other than iphones....)

The phone is finally visible on the site, I find it interesting..I emailed Sony about that and a few hours later the phone magically appeared!
I ordered my phone online through the website the day it was released (like you said had to dig through the search bar to find it). Unfortunately I was unable to upgrade from my end so I had to call 611.
At&t must not have told many people about its roll out because the rep who helped me had no clue that this phone existed but had no problem searching it himself and ordering it on his end. I emphasize this because he flat out told me he keeps up with all the employee updates and me asking about the phone was the first he ever heard of it.
Long story short he ordered the phone for himself and expressed my order so we both can baste in its awesomeness asap!
