Ok I hesitated before creating this topic because everytime you mention Android here you end up with arguments and closed threads. Let's try to all behave like adults that can have a proper conversation.
So, Google buys Motorola Mobility... Do you think other OEMs will come running to Microsoft anytime soon? And should they be welcome with open arms? Or do you think Microsoft should also make its hardware and buy Nokia/RIM? I'm not sure which is the best strategy but it's likely this will hugely impact Windows Phone.
Dont think anything will change or this will have any big impact on WP7. htc, samsung, etc always had android as their preferred platform and make boatloads of cash from it, this will likely just make them compete harder and possibly neglect WP7 even more. Which basically is the situation today.
I think MS should buy Nokia after WP7 is well established and selling well, then they can build on that and not be beholden to the android OEM's.
1. Windows Phone 7 will not be running on Motorola/Google hardware
2. More focus on internal hardware, ie; updates will be released for internal hardware ahead of what is release to other suppliers
3. Multi-vendor support will decline ane more WP7 support
4. Increase in WP7 support at the expense of Android
Apple does its manufacturing in-house.
Google owns Motorola.
Microsoft's major partner is Nokia.
It's all the same thing, just with a different spin on it. Nothing will change. If anything, it might make OEM's prefer Windows Phone over Android... probably not, but maybe. It's all speculation anyway.

I don't know, eventually Motorola phones will get exclusive features and will probably be the only Android phones that get day one updates like the Nexus One/S. If Motorola sales grow too much there's a case to be made for Samsung, HTC, etc. to go and look elsewhere.
one big patant war
so now we have google&motorola vs MS&nokia vs apple&(let them buy samsung)
I was about to make the same question, I think that Google buying Motorola Mobile maybe will help WP7, why? Because now the other OEMs will have to compete against Google as a Hardware maker... Before, they were where partners, now they're competing companies and obviously Google will have preference for Motorola over the other companies when delivering updates, etc... That's my thinking...

Means we are screwed. Not!
Motorola aint Nokia. But yes, expect some real nasty Android devices, as Google is (dont deny) a creative company. HTC and Samsung will spend more time trying to follow Motorola, as Motorola will always update their phones fast as Google update Android.
It will be nice, I admit. One of the fatal flaw of Android just ended together with the treat of the patent war (which puts Google again on feet).
Android will run better on Motorola devices, smoothier, since they are going to work with the hardware and software.
No WP7 on Motorola since Google hate it so bad (look at our Youtube and Google search page).
Maybe less chances to WP7, because 50% of the market is already using Android. Google is more Apple alike now, and this should count.
But probably HTC, Samsung and LG is going to try some more of WP7 Mango juice. Or I hope so. Sony Ericksson would be nice too..
With a good deal I can see Samsung and LG making more WP7 devices, but SE??? I don't know... :-S
Sent from my HD7 T9292 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I wouldnt bet on that.. But hope is the to die, right? I like SE's phone. More than LG and Samsung for sure.
Probably means Apple goes after Motorola and Google now and gives Microsoft and Samsung a break. Or they hire even more lawyers to go after all the above.
Oh...what does it mean to us, the consumers? Probably higher prices to pay for all those f**king lawyers.

Yeah, it makes sense too.
everything to do with patents and nothing to do with hardware.
oh, and a few people just DOUBLED their money on moto-mobile, ill bet. look at the price jump ! wow !
this only effects microsofts ability to sue google, and no royalties. smart move google.
whatever happens, the patent system is still stupid and broken
Sure it's mainly about patents but Google could have just bought/licensed the patents for a lot less, I don't see Motorola turning them down. I think if they went for the whole of Motorola Mobility it's to also make a strong line of hardware. You don't pay $12.5 Billion to not make the best handsets you can when you get an OEM in the package.
Motorola, TBH I was unware they made an android phone!
the acquisition of MM is just about as quiet as MS's acquisition of Danger in 2008. Anyone remember that...not a lot of people =/
Hello the result is Android more protected, and widows phone falling its gud move by google

Well, I will tell you the future I foresee.
Apple will still be around selling iPhones.
Samsung, HTC, LG, etc. will still be selling Android handsets, but the majority of the handsets they sell will be Windows Phones.
Motorola Mobility (eh. Google Mobility) will be making record breaking profit and will be responsible for 70%+ of all Android phones produce.
Windows Phone will make up the majority of the smartphone market share.
Microsoft will license (but not buy) many technologies from RIM including BlackBerry Messenger.

3 those droiiiiiiiiid commercials were already old. hopefully they branch out in marketing. like htc.
4 repeat of 2
5 why on earth would M$ ever care/want anything about bbm ?
No one knows where this one will head. It all depends on what Google's intentions are for the hardware side of the business. It's doubtful that Google seriously wants to be in the hardware business.
The only firm conclusions I think we can reach are...
(1) It was all about the patents.
(2) Google is more serious about mobile than many people thought previously. They just spent a good chunk of their cash hoard on a bunch of patents that may or may not be sufficient to protect Android and/or they spent a bunch of money on an overpriced phone maker. Either way, they probably more than doubled their total investment in Android.
Personally, I think G will be selling pieces off to interested parties, but I could be wrong.
MS is in an interesting position now. Google just handed them a great talking point for their sales pitch to Samsung/HTC/SE but the BFF relationship with Nokia takes the wind out of that sail. Hard to tell what their next move should be.
Interesting times ahead. Time to go make some more popcorn.

Make that the K850, I loved the glow around the camera lens.
Anyway, its their loss. PS3 sales lower than Xbox 360, not to mention PSVita not really that successful and pocket-friendly. Xperia line is crap, too many bloatware. SEN, again, not really successful. So far all their efforts are poured directly to mobile and gaming tech, yet they cant seem to reach their goal.
But like they said, WHO CARES!
If they were to adopt WP, they would be as successful as Nokia, well at least HTC. Then again, too bad theyre poor now to buy WP licences... but WHO CARES! We have Nokia, a company that's so popular, everyone knows it.

Do you have some sales numbers I missed for nokia in eu ?
Sony who?, Sony really has not made a product that has made me stop and look since the ps3, they use to be a leader in high quality consume electronics but the quality has dropped steadily over the years. Take for instance there HIFI rang such as the sony multiki, on the other hand the ps3 was made from relatively expensive hardware that was way too hard to program for and as a result has not performed half as well as the pervious generations.
I don’t know what is about the experia brand but I simply don’t like any of the phones, perhaps it is my current perception of the Sony brand or the fact the sony GUI on android is horrible or that I don’t find any of the phones to aesthetically pleasing. Sony seems to be stuck in the 2004 bubble of industrial design where chrome and space age designs were in.
Either way the company is haemorrhaging money and either need to compete on price of differentiate them self again perhaps again as a high quality manufacture or going though the rout of windows phone.
Now thats funny
Sony are a disgrace, split from ericsson, trying to make a comeback.........hoping beyond hope that they are able to drag their sorry asses over the line.
Sorry Sony but i sure as hell wont be buying your mobile products even if you do go with WP as an OS, i'm sure that every other person from the Xperia X1 forums or indeed anyone who has owned an Xperia will agree whole heartedly. The build quality (abhorrent at best), customer service (refusal to believe even after thousands had posted proof, that their crappy chassis fail was a manufacturing issue) and general all round experience with Sony over the last few years has soured me from even contemplating as much.........set aside the complete shambles with the PS3 a while back and their fantastic apology gift of a couple of crappy platinum games.
You just want to release cheap garbage and overcharge massively for it.........SO HELL NO!!.......F*£K YOU SONY!!!
...........and back on point, Sony are not exaclty qualified on any level any more to pass comment. Since when were they suddenly "in touch with the people"
I'm a big fan of windows phone but let's be honest....what he said is not that wrong....up to now windows phone has made next to no impact on the smartphone user market.
MS has completely failed at marketing this awesome product....I love being different but if they don't kick the promotion up a notch, I'll be different with a product with no future...

I agree 100% with your first paragraph. If we go down the line everyone is going down in this thread, we are saying if we are not in a better position we cannot be critical. Just because Sony is not doing well does not mean what they are saying is wrong. Windows Phone sure would not fix Sony right now so it is not an option for them.
Now the second part. Did Google do a wonderful job marketing Android in the early stages? With the Phil Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg G1 ads? I do not believe they did. But they had a product that everyone else needed at the time. The rest was left up to the carriers and the oems.
While Sony isn't wrong in what they said (based on market share so far), its pretty irresponsible of them to say it publicly like that. Especially since it would benefit them to remain on good terms with MS in the computing and tablet arena.
If they ever need to start making Windows Phones in the future (assuming WP does well over time, and Android ect doesn't pan out long term) they are not going to have an upper hand at the negotiating table.
That being said, in the present, nobody really cares about Sony TV's, computers, Phones. The only thing they have going for them right now is the play station.

I agree. In life you should never burn your bridges. Apple said never again to nVidia and now they are right back there. Sony doing a Windows Phone with Xbox Live in it was always quite a bitter pill for them I would imagine. The first review of the Xperia S I read was not so kind about the build, but Sony is onto something with the look of it. Too many poor decisions by Sony. Nintendo is the king of mobile consoles and struggled to sell the initially priced 3DS outside of Japan. Sony follows suit with the more expensive than the entry level console handheld?

You sure about that?
To all those who are saying "who cares"; Sony are still very relevant in the smartphone market.
Their Xperia lines are selling well in Asia, and latest figures show it has shipped/sold nearly 20m Android handsets worldwide; this is more units than all WP7 phone manufacturers put together.
Sony make nice looking and feeling hardware; the Xperia Ray is one of the nicest smart-phones I've ever played with, hardware wise (not sure about the OS), and having a desirable WP7 fashion phone would be a huge boost.

Shipped or Sold is one of my favorite points about wp7. There are no hard sales numbers, anywhere (please prove me wrong, someone).
Apple jumps up and down with X million iphones sold FIRST DAY ON SALE, and google shows X00,000 activations, per day.
Meanwhile, from microsoft, nothing.
The point is, microsoft has to prove that people do care... with sales numbers. Or maybe they don't. Apparently they do not yet...
Hello,
I was just watching the announcement that Sony made about HTC becoming an official PlayStation certified company. Sony seemed pretty, what's the word, promotive (if that's a word ) about HTC and the companies designs.
What were Sony thinking? I know it's true, but they basically just told the world the HTC One X is a BETTER phone than any of theirs.. check out the video here. Apparently their stocks actually fell after this announcement which is pretty damn interesting
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNwiCZKK0cI
There are approximately 10 threads around this E3 announcement in the HTC One X forum already
They said open platform, so HTC may not be exclusive. HTC is just the first partner. But even if the only HTC will PlayStation, it's not really a bad move as long as they get shares out of the sale. I don't think that PS will be open like Android anytime soon.
Sony is great overall but in my opinion they suck in mobile market. Sony Ericsson never surpassed Nokia back in Symbian days. When they finally were even, Symbian just died. In Android market, their Xperia doesn't stand a chance against HTC and SS products. So they did the right thing, dumped Ericsson and looked for new partner. Whatever happens would still be better than being in the place where they are now.
I suspect Sony will make more money from game sales (their publishing side) than a few speculative lost hardware sales.
Sony still the best for their gaming consoles! love their exclusive games and damn i am happy to hear the news they are expanding it to others. cant wait to play some PS games on HTC!
Get me Uncharted & The Last of Us on my One X! One can dream aye?

Well they didn't exactly dump Ericsson, and I haven't heard anything about them looking for a new partner either? Sony buying Ericsson out was best for both parties, as I don't think Sony needed the expertise Ericsson have today.

This annoys me to no end. They could easily tweak their Z series apps to make them work on our device and then push them through the update center (like they did with that completely useless keyboard update, I mean seriously wtf was that even about?). If people from XDA can port them in their free time, why can't Sony do it? I know many XDA devs are software geniuses, but I think Sony with their specialized team of paid developers could do it just as well.
I wish there was some way to let Sony know they shouldn't ignore old users like this, we deserve the newer apps as well, especially consider the device is powerful enough to run them just as well as the newer ones.
Everyone is always clamoring for the new version of the OS, when just having the newer apps would make a huge difference for much less effort on Sony's part.
What do you guys think?
Eeeeeeeh Marketing.
First time I'm leading such a thing so mods, if there's a better way to lead people to the right thread, please let me know!
I've started a XZ1 & XZ1 Compact bounty thread for getting a reward pool up for anyone who can find a locked bootloader root method, TA backup & restore method or any other way to root and retain DRM features. Thought it would be great to have the bounty in a single thread for both the normal size XZ1 and XZ1 Compact since both models are very similar and obtaining root usually comes in pairs anyway since the Z1 and Z3 days.
Aside from the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact having great on-paper specs and being very appealing, I'm also fed up that the latest Xperia model where root and retain DRM is possible is the 1 year old XZ!! I'm sure some of you share the same feelings too!
When i get mine i am up for testing.
XZ1Compact is a junk i returned it sorry.
Ok, so.. this is my first time being interested in a Sony device. Long time LG user here, and I'd be all over the V30 if T-Mobile didn't lock the bootloader down. Is the purpose for this bounty solely to retain DRM keys after the bootloader unlock? I see the XZ1 is part of the Sony Open source project where they let you unlock the bootloader. I only want to root this phone for v4a and adaway.

My apologies. I was too vague in my original question. I was hoping for specifics pertaining to this model, the XZ1 Compact. I'm well aware of the proprietary Sony software lost by removing DRM keys. I know after several reviews I've read that the XZ1 does lack a couple of features that it's bigger brother.
Another question. If Sony has this open source platform set up specifically for developers to create ROM's based on this XZ1 Compact, why would Sony hinder the performance and features by not allowing you to keep the DRM keys when unlocking the bootloader in a simple fashion?
Please don't respond if my questions upset you. I've read the posts and I'm posting questions here because I'm genuinely interested in this.

Can you elaborate on what you want to know? You said you are already aware of feature loss, so what sort of specifics are you talking about?
As you said, the XZ1 Compact does not have any additional features that the bigger brother XZ1 doesn't, hence whatever DRM-reliant features are lost in the absence of DRM keys on the XZ1, the same goes for the XZ1 Compact.
Sony has never really published a list of features that will be broken, they're somewhat (purposefully) vague on this part.
The bounty thread mentions some of the most prominent features that are impacted, I urge you to take a look. As I had mentioned in my previous reply, it also answers your original question regarding the scope and goal of the bounty.

That is a question only Sony knows the answer to.
However, from a purely speculative viewpoint, it seems they think that binding some of their proprietary features to DRM keys is a way of protecting their IP.
Your phone won't actually be rendered useless after losing your DRM keys per se, you just lose the ability to utilize some of their more "advanced" toys like low light noise reduction algorithms and X-Reality, which are definitely nice to have but not "essential" features.
For AOSP ROMs, for example, Sony still provides bare bone driver support for the display and camera - perfectly functional, just not exceptional.
They opened up their phones to developers in the name of mutual benefit, but of course we know that it's more for their own sake than ours.
As for the lack of DRM-bound features in an unlocked open world, I suppose it's just their way of saying those assets are off limits, and to discourage average consumers from messing with their phones and driving up the cost and complexity of support.
Then again, just think for a minute. This is Sony we're talking about. Sony history is practically made up of anti-consumer-friendly practices with locked down, proprietary everything.
Just be grateful they're even doing this open devices thing, citizen scum dear users, and pray they don't hinder it any further.

Yeah, I completely agree. I only blame Apple for this. They've always been supreme dictator over iOS and I think larger companies like Samsung with their locked bootloaders on carrier phones and Verizon - which has no reason to lock theirs down are following suit because they can.
Ahh well, I appreciate your response. I just read an article the other day - the top three phones that are Dev friendly are the OnePlus 5T, Google Pixel and Huawei Mate 9. I'd go that route, but they are all larger phones. Guess I'm just hoping for something that doesn't exist (still!)

So.. I just turned 40 this year. I've been playing around with Android phones now since the HTC Eris back in 2009 (yikes!!). I travel a lot for work and carry two pair of headphones with me. One pair of IEM's and one pair of large wireless cans. The IEM's are mostly used out of convenience and sound quality.. cans when I don't want something stuck in my ear. Anyway, the point to my rambling, is back in the Samsung days, I was introduced to something called "Voodoo Sound". It was created by a dev on XDA to manipulate the hardware settings (particularly the hardware gain) for users audio. It was amazing. The point of it was to boost the volume so you could CUT frequencies on an EQ and still keep the NORMAL volume of the phone. I see so many people on here complaining to other users about why they want to boost the volume, when that's not what they are doing at all. I fell in love and held on to old phones to keep from giving that feature up. Then, it slowly vanished and Viper4Android was released by a bunch of Chinese devs. I eventually switched over. I can't live without v4a. It makes up for the shortcomings in my IEM's.
So the problem is, with all these locked bootloader phones, I can't put v4a on the phone. I usually just keep using the older phone anyway until I can't stand the sluggish performance anymore and then start hunting for a new phone. The monkey wrench this go around is that work makes me carry an iphone as well as my personal.. so I'm trying to find an all around good phone that's compact. I got real excited about this XZ1 Compact until I saw some users complaining about battery life. I am extremely hard phone a phone battery. The 3300mah battery in the ginormous V20 I have now will last me about 6 hours while traveling on the plane, through airports, etc.
My dream phone would be a utilitarian design, waterproof, good battery, good camera, small, and rootable so I can put v4a (and prob adaway). It's crazy to me how Sony is the only manufacturer that dabbles with small phones now. Sammy tried it with the S5 mini, etc years ago, not nothing since.
Having since reading this thread is just another roadblock keeping me from going out to my local Best Buy today and just buying this phone and being done with it. I'd be worried about losing these DRM keys that effect camera performance. I love taking photos while traveling of the things I see and sharing them with family.

It really is a douche move by Sony to render the camera completely useless after unlocking the bootloader.
Before the X-series line, at least with my own experience with the Z-series, UB affects the camera by disabling low-light noise reduction, but doesn't cause it to only take green pictures, it was still functional.
Well, the potentially good news is that a dev on XDA has created a DRM patch for the XZ Premium, which has similar platform configurations to the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, and the dev mentioned in the bounty thread that he's working on bringing compatibility to the XZ1 family.
If you'd like, you can support him and make a donation pledge to incentivize him and/or other devs to find a solution.
Alternatively, the very same dev who created a DRM patch for the XZP also found some third party camera apps that works, presumably before he developed the fix.
See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/how-to/tip-camera-fix-unlocked-rooted-sony-t3647333
Or, you can just flash a AOSP build.
Or, as you are contemplating, just skip Xperias altogether. It's a world of compromises, unfortunately.

Nobody gets that!!!! I wanted the Z2 3 years ago but it went extinct before i bought it and now i finally bought xz1 for the same reason!! utilitarian design, waterproof, good battery, good camera, small, and rootable so I can put some other stuff. Only Sony is doing that and i get so many looks for my new phone -
Sony?? why?? wait sony still makes phones??
I am like Duh!!!
I have been using moto forever and i loved the original RAZR that came in 2011 - best size and form factor ever!!
Next to that i only liked the brick shape of sony, xz1 seems so nice for that

My dream phone would be a utilitarian design, waterproof, good battery, good camera, small, and rootable so I can put v4a (and prob adaway). It's crazy to me how Sony is the only manufacturer that dabbles with small phones now. Sammy tried it with the S5 mini, etc years ago, not nothing since.

These are my only reasons for going to iOS + jailbreaks when the iPhone 6 came out. Apple is the only one who comes out with flagship compacts year after year, Sony tries but fails with camera every year :/
