Today I noticed that the back of my Epic Touch is pushed out. Popped the cover and my battery is swollen. It wasn't like this yesterday. What drew my attention to it was the fact is was much hotter then normal. Also, it keeps resetting now too I've noticed a few times today.
I had noticed my phones battery life took a noise dive the past couple weeks but I figured it was something I had installed or done. I went from about 24~30 hours on Gingerbread to like...... 10~12 hours?
I've had my phone about a year, maybe a little less..? I assume it's not safe to keep using this battery but I really do NOT want to invest money into another one when I really want to find a way to get the GS III anyway. Problem is, I need a battery like today, I use my phone for work.
Take it to the sprint store. as long as it isn't water damaged they will swap it for you.

Fixed that for ya.
Since it is a year old, it is out of warranty. If it is not quite a year old, they can tell you to contact Samsung for a new battery or it will just be luck of the draw who you talk to and if they have any batteries laying around.
Brand new Samsung OEM battery, no questions asked. They never even asked my name.
I walked in, asked to speak with the tech about my battery, battery was already out of the phone and when the tech saw it he said, "you need a new battery don't you"!?
He didn't even bother with their "tests", he just went into the back and got one still in the plastic baggy and handed it to me.
Was much easier then I expected. Never even asked how long I'd had the phone.
nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never had them question me about a battery as long as it didn't have water damage. My stores must be different cause we talk about rooting and everything. When I was running AOKP the tech asked which build and everything. I like my Sprint store. It is a corporate one if it matters.

Figured I'd bring this back up in case anyone was having this problem again. Anyway, I recently noted my battery was swollen too and after reading this post I figured I'd try going to the sprint store and see what happens.
I walked in, one of the workers there saw me holding the battery and asked if i needed to have it checked. I said yes. He checked it, confirmed that it was swollen and told me that the machine that measures its electrical properties said the battery was bad. He proceeded to give me another battery that he said was better, and I left happy.
I don't think the battery he gave me was new, but it definitely performs better than my old one. I do happen to have a week left on my 1 year warranty, but it was my impression that the guy at the store didn't even check my records. Finally, this was a corporate store and it is one of the stores that is marked on sprint's website as capable of doing repairs.
Basically what I'm trying to say is, if you think you're battery's bad, go ahead and try to take it into the store. Worst case scenario you get nowhere, but if you're lucky you could end up leaving with a better battery without much hassle.
I went to three different corporate stores with my swollen battery, and got nada. One store tried hard to sell me an extend battery at full retail. I mentioned that my phone was less than a year old, and all said the warranty does not cover the battery, and I would need to contact Samsung.

I went to a corporate store that is listed as a repair center as well. They logged me in, and he could tell my battery was swollen before I even took the cover off the back of the phone. They gave me a battery from a demo phone as they didn't have any in store and they ordered a new battery that was delivered to my house a few days later. I do have TEP so I don't know if that makes a difference.
I just found out my battery was swollen and I decided to purchase an extended battery instead. I'd rather not have to deal with Sprint.
At just over a year I had a swollen battery...took it into a non-corporate store and they wanted 40 bucks for a new one. Made a 10 minute call to sprint and I've got a new one on the way. Even though I am out of warranty the TEP kicked in to cover it. Definitely worth the call if you've got the protection plan.
Ha I have the same problem. My phone started resetting its self every time I would try to use my 3g / wifi if I didn't turn data on it was fine. I checked the battery and it was swollen. Went to a sprint store and they said they were outta batteries and I could try buying one...damn them!!
spent 30 minutes at a sprint store in Philly- I got nothing! Im outside of the 1yr warranty and do have Insurance.
I ended up buying an Anker battery
I just picked up a new one from sprint last night after work they had ordered it on Monday. I didn't have TEP but I still had warranty and they wanted to charge me 35$ but luckily I went in with a friend who also has the same phone and she has insurance so what they did is placed the order under her phone even though it's actually for me and there was no charge at all so I was lucky she came along with me lol.

Does anyone have a picture of their "swollen" battery? I think mine might be ever so slightly starting to, but that could just be my eyes playing tricks on me. If anyone does, please share. Thanks in advance.

I don't have one but you can start noticing by taking your battery out and try to put it back in you'll notice when pushing the battery in its not going to be flat it will feel like there's something in between the battery and the phone also the back cover will start to be difficult to put on because of the thickness of the battery.

If you're reading this, you're probably having a problem with your phone screen flickering rapidly for a few seconds, then the phone shutting off. Fear not though, this is not a result of a bad flash!
CHECK YOUR BATTERY!
Yes, that is right, your battery. Feel for any bulges, set it up on a countertop and look at it from the side, spin it on your counter, something.
If it is bulging, call Sprint or Samsung immediately, because your battery is defective, and you don't want it exploding in your pocket!
Now, the reason I'm posting this, is I've searched the internet thoroughly, and have not found one single bit of information on the screen flicker problem, but reading a bit up on batteries, I came up to this conclusion, and I was right, so I decided to alert my fellow XDA members. Stay safe guys.
Also: If your power button does not turn on your phone for one push, then you may have a problem with the power button;the power button or anything else not working, other than charging and screen flicker is not related and you may have a defective phone.
I'll update this later with how it went at the Sprint SAR Center, but I definitely need a new battery.
Edit 9/1/12: Had to send battery to Sammy since the Sprint corporate store wanted to charge me $45. Battery should get here in about 2 weeks. D:
Edit 9/2/12: I visited a Sprint store yesterday to try to get my phone checked out to see about the power button, and it's definitely broken. I had to talk them into replacing the phone rather than fixing it. I also got a white one, too.
Oh thank God, happens less than an hour after full charge, screen flickers, then LOS, then dies, if i reboot, it says battery fully discharged. Then as soon as i plug it in, it's fully charged again
EDIT: Took to Sprint, problem confirmed, spun the battery on the counter, replaced no questions asked

Tried two already. .-. A corporate and a regular store. Maybe it's just everyone in Miami is a douche
This just started happening to me a few days ago, but my battery isnt swollen.
I just came to the general section to ask if this happened to anyone else. I just requested a replacement battery Sprint yesterday. Not only did I experience the screen flickering and constant shutdowns after about 1 hour, but my battery was bulging so bad that it barely fit in the phone. I hadn't thought about opening the phone to check the battery until the phone started smelling like it was burning.
Woke this morning to find my wife's phone untouchably hot after being plugged in all night and the battery is bulging. Sprint better replace this no questions asked.

Good luck with that! I came in, and they were all like "$45 since u don't haz inshuranse, lol fuk u"
Well, not exactly like that, but something similar. Anyways, I called Samsung, and they were nice about it, asked me to ship it in, and they pay everything, and also went ahead and ordered an OEM battery and charger from Amazon, but I'm screwed because they're both taking at the very least a week.

Keep your eye on it mate, as soon as it's hard to put on the back cover, it's begun.
This is good to know so you can get it fixed quickly
This is wild. I thought there was something deteriorating within my ROM over the past few weeks. It's been getting more sever. Just before typing this, my battery had died and now it will boot to the lock screen and freeze. I noticed things like the battery icon and service icon completely disappear and reappear. This is all new on type of the other issues described in this thread. I'll be calling Sprint first thing in the morning.
this is good info .. I was starting too wonder if I had done something when I flashed a new rom on ...
I called Sprint yesterday and they too told me since I didn't have insurance that it would cost $35 to bring it in for a tech to look at.
If it is just the battery, I ordered another from Amazon. If it is the phone, then I'll have to suck it up. I got this phone the DAY it came out, Sept. 16, 2011.
Needless to say I'm hoping it's only the battery.
2 weeks without a replacement battery, I'm getting frustrated at Samsung lol

If you have any way of checking if the phone is also messed up, do, and if it is, you should go out and exchange the phone for $35. My power button is completely dead, which I thought was somehow related to the battery, but it wasn't. So every time I want to turn the phone on, I gotta pull the battery, and it starts up for me, since I guess the button is stuck. I got mine September 20th of last year, so my upgrade isn't till July, and I'd rather pay 35 dollars and use this thing till Monday, than to use it till July or even worse, not have a phone at all while Sammy figures out what to do with it. Plus, the guy at the store hooked me up with a white one.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Yep, took 4 days to get there, and 7 days just to look and a bulged battery and another 3 because they "want to make sure" is fu**ing frustrating lol. Even a pack of amputated monkeys can see the battery being defective ...
after updating to FH13 through Kies, whenever I have GPS on and may 3G data on my phone would do a quick restart to the 4G logo bootup. all this within 15 seconds. it is not the full restart where you see the Samsung Galaxy S2 in the beginning the and 4G logo animation.
this seems to happen only when my GPS is on and maybe 3G data, had occurrences with 3G only not 4G.
I have a few batteries for sale if you are interested

Hi,
I am on the latest available software. All of the sudden, got the black screen with red edges at the periphery. Reboot and battery pull did not help. Would recur as soon as phone boots up. So I restored to factory settings, which solved it.
Now my phone shuts down as soon as battery goes down to 60% or so. I have to plug it in, then I can turn it back on, and it shows there is stiill more than 50% charge left. So my phone now needs to be charged every 2-3 hours with any usage. It is 1 year old.
Any ideas? Do I need to buy a new battery, or is this more serious issue (with phone itself)? I do not have the insurance, so taking it to the store is going to be a bit expensive.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks
Sincerely,
Check your battery, it most likely has gone bad. For some reason, when this phone is about a year old, the battery will mess up.
How to check if battery is bad:
Take it out, spin it on the table. If it doesn't really spin, it's fine. If it continues to spin, the battery is definitely going bad.
I'm saying this because my phone battery messed up back in August, while my dad's E4GT got messed up last week.

Well, Not quite. It is true that I have to plug-in to start the phone, but the battery IS NOT discharged. That's the interesting part. I usually still have more than 50% charge left when the phone shuts down. That's what worries me the most.

Unless you were one of the first people to buy your E4GT you should still be in the 1 year warranty... meaning it should be covered at no cost. TEP is definitely covered according to corp store folks. IMHO just head over to Sprint store and push them to do a battery exchange for free.
They could push you to do the mfr. claim... but most won't.
Thanks Everyone!
I think I am just outside of the year warranty. I got mine a few days after the release. Will try Anker from Amazon. Spin test is definitely positive. We have another ET4G phone in the family, bought at the same time, and its battery did not spin. Will get two replacements as I suspect the other will die soon as well.
Thanks again.

They are replacing batteries free of charge outside the 1yr warranty. Both sprint and Samsung are, with Samsung you have to mail in the battery and wait to get a new one, but if you end up buying a replacement its a good way to get a free OEM as a backup

Did u go to a corporate repair center? 3rd party vendors/franchise repair centers don't seem to have alot of batteries in stock, the one near me doesn't even sell batteries. If you need to contact Samsung, I just called the support # on the website and got a rep in about a min. I explained my phone was just over a year by about 2weeks and my battery had swollen and was causing the phone to run extremely hot and randomly shut off. He then said that they warranty the battery separately from the device and it has an 18 month warranty and he was going to email me a shipping label to send my battery in. I printed the label put it in a bubble wrap envelope with the battery and put it in the mail. 10 days later I received a brand new OEM battery in a original plastic box. No charge for anything. I had already ordered and received an anker replacement from amazon for $8 so I didn't have to go the 10days with no phone. But for $8 I now have 2 batteries a brand new OEM and a brand new anker. The anker was labeled 1800mah but when i received it it was a bit thicker and heavier than my bloated stock one, I put it on my tester and it registered at 1950mah. It came charged at 85% and lasted all day ~12hrs right outta the box. The first 15% dropped fast, about an hr then it stuck at 70% for over an hr while I was on the web the whole time and then evened out and settled down.

Ebay is quite possibly the worst place they could have directed you to. Ebay batteries are generally Chinese mock ups with less than stock Mah and inferior cells. Grab the anker batteries and call Samsung, politely hassle them about the battery and they'll give you one.

Just an update. I called Samsung and told them of my woes. They said that since my phones were purchased in October, they were no longer in warranty, but he said that when he ran my dec numbers, it showed as still covered. I was emailed shipping labels and have to send proof of purchase along with my battery back to Samsung. I have purchased a few Anker batteries that will hold me over until the new OEM ones arrive.
Thanks everyone for the assistance.

I've had good luck with cheap eBay ones for $3-$5. (~$10 for 2 + external charger, shipped from China)
Originally bought a cheap 1800mAh for my Epic, but kept it around and am using in my E4GT (when the orinal battery "puffed" and wouldn't hold much of a charge) Recently added a "2200mAh" one and external charger. It's a tiny bit thicker than my 1800, but still fits under the stock cover. I havent noticed the "2200" giving any better battery life than the "1800" - both work well and I've had no problems.
This issue is happening to me too but seems to occur when I'm downloading something like an MMS or app, or even an image intensive webpage. The screen flashes to different brightness levels and then the battery would suddenly "drain" to zero, where the software tells me it's at zero, but with a little extra charge and a reboot, the power level will be where it was before shutting down.
And none of this occurs while plugged in so I'm reasonably sure it's an old battery, I'd just like some confirmation. What gave it away though? The flashing screen thing had preceded a loss of signal so at first (and for about a week or so) I thought that was what it was until I found this thread.

When I went to get a new battery, the guy pulled the battery out and spun it on the counter. If it spins, it's expanded, and indicative of being on its last leg or already dead. Of course, you could also palpate the battery and you will feel the bulge but the spin test is simpler, definitive, and more entertaining. Just posting in case someone else runs into this problem or a similar battery problem and come across this thread - try the battery spin test.
Well the headline gives it away guys!! OK so, I dropped my phone last week(I had a case on it, but its a cheap case off of Amazon)! Nothing happened to the screen, but the power button is now way more sensitive than it should be, and my E4GT heats up a lot quicker than it normally should! I have the Qcell battery! Is it the battery or the phone! Please let me know! Thanks again for all of your help!!

Where is the heat coming from? The bottom of the phone or top? If its the bottom I would say it might be the battery. If its the top I would say its the cpu. Are you overclocking? Are you playing any intensive games? Do you have an app that can read the temp of the battery?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
It's coming from the middle of the phone. I have an app telling me the temperature of the phone! So maybe its both!! I just barely got the battery on March 25, 2013! It's gone that quickly!
I'm under clocked at 800mHz through "Set CPU" on GB27. The other day I was outside and it hit 127°!!! Should i get a new battery, or a new phone?

So I put the qcell in the fridge after charging it over night one time and left it in there and came back about 1-1 1/2 weeks later and swapped the batteries in the fridge. That seemed to fix it so I used the qcell until school started 2 weeks later. And the fridge made the hyperbion better than when I bought it

On release I got my D710 from Sprint and it was overheating too. It was super hot especially when I charged the phone without a battery cover. It literally almost burned me so I exchanged it at Sprint a few days after and they even hooked me up with a free oem battery. I think there's a bad batch of overheating S2s cause Sprint will replace it super fast if you tell them it's overheating too dangerous temps. That's how I got them to replace my phone when my power button broke. To top it off it was within warranty and I had insurance and they didn't want to replace because of power button issue until I said it was overheating lol.

Haha nice but I don't have insurance or a warranty on it anymore. So I'll just have to save up and hopefully be able to buy a photon or something bcuz it gets really bad signal. Even in my pocket when I'm not using it it'll heat up, especially if apps are running in the background
