Hi, I am new to the new android world and so far loving it over the stupid crackberry I was stuck with for the longest time. I'm fairly certain I've rooted it (unlocked it using these steps, have superuser icon), but now I'm overwhelemed on which android version or rom to stick with and using which mods. I was hoping someone can give some recommendations based on my requirements:
- I need full camera use, twitter and social media is kind of my job, I wish I was kidding (so Im guessing ICS is out of the question, unless you can convince me otherwise)
- Flash support would be nice (I see links to it to the big sticky, but I'm simply stating my requirements and asking what version would be best for it)
- I would love it to be fast and saving battery life.
- I prefer stability over something that seems like theres a lot of work left to do on it
- I will be using it to listen to music once in a while
- I will probably use a lot of apps so ensuring theyre all on the SD card will be cool (on sticky, I know)
I sincerely hope this isn't an annoying post. Seems like I'd be fine with using a variant of 2.3.6 as 2.3.7 didn't seem like it added a lot. Thanks in advance
Try stock based roms
Battery lif way better then on cm
But cm has more speeds

I would say CM7 is for you. Battery life isn't as well as on stock is, but difference is rather small. And you will get speed and great functions
As most users on XDA, I've got a rooted device that I want to use a custom ROM on, and there are so many choices it makes choosing a ROM very difficult.
And it is all a matter of preference, depending what included features (included Gapps, default launcher, notification options, etc) or what base it is built from (CM10, AOSP, AOKP, etc) everyone has their own preference.
I created this public spreadsheet, but I thought it may be useful for others, and allow others to possibly to keep track of what features are included out-of-the-box on different custom ROMs. It has really taken off since I originally created it.
http://goo.gl/U8a0E
Hopefully this can help others like me who want to quickly know what features they will or won't have with different custom ROMs.
I considered trying to do a forum post on this, but obviously I would have to keep up with updates myself on Post #1 like most stickied reference posts, that's why I thought a public Google Spreadsheet would be more helpful as anyone can update it.
Overall, a lot of this will probably be moot once a stable CM10 is released, but we never really know how long that can take. And we all know there will still be customizations made to it, one I can think of specifically is Paranoid Android.
Thanks everyone who makes updates to the sheet. I would also like to throw out a HUGE thank you to the custom ROM makers giving us stable ROMs that meet our individual needs.
And, as the Google Doc can be viewed by ANYONE, must get permission on google account to edit.
My personal "Must Haves":
- T9 Dialer (avoid having to install separate dialer app)
- Customizable Notification drop down for Additional Toggles (this has replaced the need for Widgetsoid2 since I can have the Flashlight and Wifi AP here.)
- Reboot and Reboot to Recovery in Power Menu (Mostly Reboot as a minimum as I sometimes forget to turn it back on if I Poweroff)
- Battery Percentage in Status Bar (The logo itself is no where near specific enough for my needs, and I now prefer the circle style)
NOVEMBER 24, 2012 UPDATE: Personally I've switched over to Paranoid Android 2.99.3 (beta 3), it doesn't have my personal must haves yet, but I'm sure it will, currently I'd rather have 4.2 and lose a few features, than be running 4.1.2, it is one of the first roms with customizations to be released on AOSP 4.2, so until it is 3.x it could have some bugs.

Like I said, it is very empty right now and is completely open to others who want to make changes to it.

This is nice. I have bought gnex seven days ago and tried every JB ROM so far.
Also I noticed that paranoid, like you said ( the only ROM that I am using as a daily driver ) is not on this list.
You really should try his alpha 1.9.1 with included kernel. Well now all kernels work on this ROM. But I think that gnex is the beast already and doesnt need any Custom kernels.
Hey I like Franco kernel and I purchased his app and I am playing a lot with it, but as long as I need decent battery life I will use stock kernel. On that ROM I had only 2% of battery dropped in amazing 6 night hours. I just couldnt believe my eyes.

Yeah, I was trying to find a good ROM to get me by until CM10 was officially released as "Stable", and I was going to wait until that to try Paranoid Android, especially with all the customization I can do in it.
I may have to give it a try, maybe once I see my spreadsheet fill up with more user input. I'm already seeing a lot of activity on the sheet.

Thanks, I assume you added Soft and Chewy.
I'm downloading the newest CM10 and JellyBro to load onto my Nexus quick, hopefully I will get those two filled in completely, then at least I will know where my baseline is for my own personal comparison.
A few people have messed it up a bit and I'm sure some changes got lost, but if I don't leave it wide open, I know a lot of people won't make changes.
So, after all of that, and the spreadsheet getting updated by users pretty nicely, it looks like there is a functional enough CM10 (from the +Google page) v1.8 that is stable enough for me to start using as a daily driver for at least a few days.
I'll be using Gapps-b as I need Picasa sync to be working.
Damn! That's great work, well done! Keeping this up to date will be the hardest part but if you manage it you will help the Galaxy Nexus community a lot! I'll try to help. Keep up the good work.

I agree, I didn't put the battery life on there, all roms except the Nightlies like to advertise "Good" battery life anyway.
That's one of the issues with leaving it editable by anyone.

You could leave the public version as is, but add a "revised" version (editable only by you) that weeds out any egregious and obvious inaccuracies.
Oops misread.
I started one of these back in the day for the droid Eris. You should be able to leave it public, you can always see and revert changes.

So, overall, I definitely accomplished what I wanted to do with the Google Doc, everyone has been awesome with their updates to it.
But, for myself, the Doc is basically useless as soon as I found CM10 v1.8 on the +Google page, which is basically a very stable nightly (although it isn't), it is exactly what I wanted....
It's very stable, gives me all the features I have as my "Bare Minimum"
- Toggles in notification screen
- Battery Percentage in Status bar
- Reboot options in shutdown menu
I ended up in the exact same state after trying numerous custom roms on my HTC Desire and Motorola Atrix previously, always just ending up with CyanogenMod7.
And I happened to just fall onto the +Google post with v1.8 while compiling the Google Doc. Was about to download 1.3 then 1.8 was posted and I'm LOVING it.
And as long as I stick to CM10, I shouldn't have to wipe my data, I'm tired of doing all my Titanium Restores (as I don't have the paid version).
Again, thanks everyone for updating the Google Doc, and as I've made it public, anyone should be able to update it and keep it updated for other people out there that want to use custom roms. And if anyone ever needs to revert anything that really breaks it, all you have to do is log in with your google account.
I really hope it helps some people find the ROM they want to use for their specific needs. And it would be nice to see more of these for different devices, especially for devices not officially supported by CyanogenMod. I may have to get one started for my Motorola Atrix 4G.
Anyone notice this on both CM official and jelly bro.
There's no Document Viewer app??? it's in stock! I can view pdf, microsoft word, without needing to download 3rd party app.
Show widget before lockscreen seems not working in both CM official and jelly bro.
Great work. Should always be maintained and help users what they really want.

It may be in stock, but is not in AOSP.
Plenty of apps on the market for it, which is how we justify not adding one.

Speaking of that, does anyone know what document viewer the stock Nexus uses, and if there is an Play App, or APK I can install on CM10 that is the same.
I have Documents to Go, but I'm wondering what the Stock nexus one is.
I've added this to the spreadsheet as CM10 not having one, so if we know which app the Stock has I can put that on the spreadsheet.
Thanks.
Hey guys I have galaxy w (I bought it 10 or 12 days ago).Don't worry i studied my lesson.I know how to root, flash, install apk etc.
I rooted my phone and installed REM ICS.But i'm not happy with it.Because it has a few problems
In the first place, i want to tell you what i'm looking for.
I just want proper sms app (no mms converting), WORKING gps, menu customization [not by date or title (i'm happy with touchwiz)]
Most important -> goot battery life. That's all folks.
But i can't find a rom that meets my wishes.
Now i'll install rebel rom 3.0.6.
But if you have a recommendation PLEASE let me know.
p.s. : I'm sorry if there are grammar mistakes. Thanks in advance. :good:
CyanogenMod Alpha 8 version should be good to you
but you have the SMS to MMS converter on everyrom (i think) & touchwiz
but normally in options you can adapt it
good batterylife & performance
Or BioHazard has it all (based on cyanogenmod)
just flash the ROM + extra sms file (to get normal sms lay-out) - Biohazard customisation - good batterylife & performance (& touchwiz)
has jellybean 3 features & customisation
EhndroiX is a nice rom based on cyanogenmod
but it has it flaws, batterylife isn't perfect but it's a smooth ROM
it also has touchwiz and Jellybean lay-out
Personally i'm running EhnDroix right now but i'm thinking to switch to cyanogenmod (due to the better batterylife) or biohazard
Now about the GPS function you can use Google Maps / Navigation, you can also download Sygic GPS (look on some forums for a "free" version of it )
then you will have a free offline GPS system with TomTom maps navigation
i hope i helped you out a bit

Ive been using SGW for a lot of time now, when i had the stock rom i used ADW laucher for the menu. As for the battery life, keep 3G turned off or install JuiceDefender, it turns on 3g every X minutes, instead of keeping it on all the time. It also adjusts the brightness. My battery would last nearly 3 days that way with moderate calling.
Hugs.
Also i wonder if there is something wrong with my original samsung charger. When i charge my phone with its original charger, battery drains quickly (%85 in 2.2 hours). But when i charge it with my friend's htc's charger it downs to %97 in 2 hours.Just weird.

As I know Rebel ROM is not coming with a TW launcher, you may try Black Notes Last Page if you wish, it came with a TW launcher, just for your info, in Black Notes, you would have to reboot your phone after running the 99SuperCharger init.d script, as it may cause you unable to receive your message, but it wouldn't really affect you if you don't run the script. Hope it helps.

Are you using the USB cable as charger? That one will be much slower than the charger. For a decent battery life, I would recommend you to use a GB ROM with Juice Defender at this moment, because the battery life for CM9 may be vary from version to version at this moment.
I use its original charger (mini USB).I installed rebel rom it seems like it's okay. But i'm not sure yet.
Ok it sucks more i know it now.SMS problems, slow browsers, performance sucks
Looking for good battery life? Most of the GB roms provide good battery life. Not so sure with ICS roms, right now. If you don't mind using GB rom, i would recommend you MUTANT ROM, not bad.

If you are looking for an economical premises ROM battery GB ROM only the best in my opinion.
I myself have come back to GB after I felt in CM9 b8 only for reasons of battery.
I myself use kezra v4 final ROM, kernel xxlm8. And what you need everything works fine here.

Also, try upgrading baseband. Older baseband might have bugs that made it too aggressive and/or not smart enough to tune power usage.
Back in the CM9 thread, someone posted that he experienced a great boost in battery life after upgrading baseband.
Word of caution: make sure that the newer baseband is compatible with your country's networks.

Hey everyone. Just wondering if anyone has had chance to install CyanogenMod 10.1 ROM and if it's good? I'd imagine it to be quite buggy at the moment due to the fact that it's only just been released. Quite keen to update to latest android 4.2.1 but don't want to update to a buggy ROM.

I just flashed this rom to test it out. Lots of graphical bugs(especially when using the camera) and all of the S-pen features DO NOT WORK. And i also have noticed that my power off button whenever i click it , it does not turn off the screen to go in lockscreen. Other then that..man i was so happy to see AOSP i love it so damn much but..this is just not for me i wish these bugs were fixed and then AOSP is on!!! Thanks for the link though.
No worries for the link . I was surprised no one had been talking about it on here before when in posted it. Cyanogen seems that be the most popular ROM because it's Google stock and optimised. currently using ParanoidAndroid which is great. I highly recommend. Hopefully they'll release a 4.2.1 version of that soon!!

No graphical bugs in PA at all (as far as I am aware). I'm really pleased with it. I'd recommend it to anyone. Tablet apps on this phone also work beautifully well. Like YouTube for instance.
Battery life is SLIGHTLY (we're talking marginal) decreased from Samsung ROM. However, to give you an example of how good the battery life still is - I go to work and use my phone throughout the day for Spotify. It's always connected to wifi at work as I have hardly any signal. I am also always connected to GPS so i can get the most out of things like google now etc. I unplug at 8:30 and get home for about 6:30 every night. My battery when I get home is usually 60%. So I can't complain. When I had my iPhone I used to have to stay constantly tethered!!
Hello,
I've got recently this phone and I kind of like it. The only reason was the qwerty keyboard.
The biggest problem I have with this phone is the sound. Every messenger app (skype, yahoo, viber etc) has the same problem. The receiving sound is slow and ununderstandable.
The current ROM installed CM 10.1 Kernel 3.1.10 android 4.2.2
I am a newbie in installing ROMs, but if I could I'd go straight to android 2.3.5
CM 10.1 is very laggy, with lots of problems (missing calls, GPS connectivity, maps, performance etc).
Anyone had this problem and solved it?
Thank you
P.s. I searched in the forum about this issue, but didn't have much luck.
Whos CM 10.1 are you using? Also CM 10.1 is no longer being updated,I suggest you use CM 10.2 by Bubor or a 4.3+ ROM
If you need more help please post back
The sound issue is with voice recording, any action with VoIP, dictaphone, voice dialing etc. will make sound playback distorted for some time. This issue exist in any ROM after stock ICS, so if this is very important for you, you'd better stay with stock. Here's the link: Stock UCLJ3.
If you wish a newer ROM, such as CM 10.1.3 or CM 11, there is workaround with VoIP sound called Tinyalsa stack, but it broke GSM call receiving sound. You can look here.
Also, I should say that CM 10.1.3 and CM 11 I linked have almost no issues beside this VoIP. GPS working great, no missing calls, no reboots, great performance and no battery draining. But I recommend to try and find what will suit you best.

Hello,
Yes I use skype calling a lot, I need this feature working. So you are suggesting me to install the android 4 stock version from samsung, but from what I red, there is an issue with the qwerty keyboard light. If this is true, it confirms my first idea to go with android 2.3.5
Thank you for your replies!
Samsung fixed the keyboard issue and a lot of other stuff in their 2nd release of stock ice. If you see those types of complaints, they are from the first revision.
I'm running stock and the only two issues I have is general UI laggieness (which is expected since its stock with bloat and not really optimized, also running on an older phone with no project butter). Along with messaging notifications failing to make any noise at random. I'll get a new text message and the screen will light up, but doesn't viberate or make a sound at random. Incoming calls still ring just fine though.
Other than those two issues (lag really isn't an issue for me), stock works just fine for me.

Yes, I recommend to install stock 4.0.4, it's the best way I know to have working GSM and Skype calling at the same time without needing to switch alsas stacks. j.asir here using new CM with tinyalsa fix and terminal shortcut - that's a bit inconvenient, but at this time there's no better way to go if you wish to have newest android and skype calls.
I newer tried 2.3.5 ROM on this phone, so I can't comment anything about it. If you try vanilla 2.3.5, please write about the results!

Hi @Makshow, have you considered using a 2.3.5 ROM? I have considered the possibility of doing so as I've heard that our device running GB has no issues at all... or so I've heard, but I honestly haven't had the time to test it. I was considering the possibility of using Inception (Back in black), but the download links are not available. If my Glide would work smooth and with no issues with GB I'd be glad to use it. If you decide to go for a GB ROM could you please provide me with some feedback? I would really appreciate it if you do so. I am not so cool with using ICS as stock is very battery & RAM consuming. And I was not so convinced using Litekernel or literom. Literom is really cool, but it has some issues and glitches that I found very disturbing. If you do go for GB please provide me with some feedback :highfive: Regards
I got this phone with new ROM already installed, so I won't try flashing 2.3.5 GB Android, I have no experience with this at all. Sorry. And I doubt that there weren't any issue with GB, one can search older posts in these forums and see that there were many bugs and bloat and troubles.
As for working download link for INC3PTION 2.3.5 ROM, there is one from Androide3 here. You can try it.

Hello @Androide3, thank you for your response. How long have you been using it? Have you had any issues? Is your battery life good? How about RAM usage?
BTW is there a specific method to install this ROM? I ask since I have never used GB. My phone came with ICS already
Thanks for details given in this thread.
Where can I find the stock android 4.0.4 second version?
An other quick question (I know this is an off topic question), is the samsunng galaxy s i9000 battery the same with the i927 batter?
Thank you

Hi, I hope this is what you're looking for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994902
I read in some other post, do not remember where lol, but I saw at least 3 different persons that were using the i9000 battery for the Glide, which has 1800mAh capacity I believe :good:

This custom rom Sh*t is very annoying. I can't get rid of this crappy cyanogenmod rom
Wasted almost a day reading pointless posts all over the internet and still nothing clear on how to go back to official samsung stock android.
I'm going to get this phone to the service!
We have a fix now

Listen may i know it got really annoying with the sound.. but we have a fix now...
its a third party app which you can use.. its very easy to use and one time setup only
just get any kitkat rom..
its stable and only stops working if the app gets killed but otherwise i have tested it extesively
try it out and i would suggest omnirom to you if u prefer simplicity.

Finally I did it!
Finally I did it!
Ok, it was very easy and I feel kind of stupid  but as for the first time I'm still proud.
The major problem I couldn't install the stock rom was because of twrp. I had a old version, 2.4 I believe.
I managed to over install cwm v 6.whatever which was compatible with i927 and re-tried to install the stock rom and IT WORKED!
The stock rom is great! the phone is much much much quicker than with cm10.2. All features work! skype calls, voice recording, map, camera rotation, etc. Will see if I will lose any missed call.
The problem, I'm facing now is the sd card and internal memory which were inverted during cm10.2, but I am sorting things out.
I'm a bit disappointed that I lost all the installed apps with cm10.2. and I can not re-install them again. I have only the option to update it which won't work. Any idea?
