Hello there
Im thinking of rooting my phone with the exynos abuse. I heard it no longer works with 4.1.2, my phone its still in 4.1.1, is there a problem if I root first and theb update to 4.1.2 so this way I will have root access? Or is there a problem updating while rooted?
LOL forget about crappy kies or ota and always download latest Roms then flash them with Odin it takes only less than 5 minutes

I'm fairly new to android (two weeks or so) I'm afraid I will brick my phone by flashing it with roms or so, all I want is to root it to delete the bloatware and install apps that require root access.
So, can I root it, then install the firmware update or is this not possible?

I can confirm that updates through Kies do not work if your have a 'modified' device, well at least they didnt' for me.
You will have to flash the new rom. I recommend using Mobile Odin as you can give your device root access again at the same time as the rom flash.

Trying to figure out if I should root using the original method the install updated rom or do ota then root with new method. Is there a benefit either way? The one thing I was worried about was it seemed like there were issues with installing updated roms. Anyone have an opinion on which root method is easier?

Post this question in Q&A or reply to one of the root threads and ask it. This really clutters up this forum.
Also, just root then update.
Dont Update
Never do an OTA (OVER THE AIR) UPDATE....IF YOU WANT ROOT IN THE FUTURE
What you need to do is root then flash a rom that is built off of the newest update.
and BTW post threads in the right forums so next time you wont get you ass ripped
yeah sorry was just thinking it was relevant not a forum expert though will move or delete thanks for the reply

As the others said, this should be in Q&A. To go into more depth though on why you want to root then update, all of the more recent root efforts are based around flashing an earlier version of the stock rom to allow rooting. If you were to update and then root you would be going forward then backward in order to go forward again (ie. update, downgrade, root, update). Doesn't make much sense.
+1 Root then unlock nand then flash custom, no need to update, most customs are based off of newest update, as previously stated of course
So I really love my phone the way it is. But I do want root because there's a couple things that I like to do and rooting is required. However, if I root and if there's an update for my phone. Do I have to go back to STOCK get the new updated version and then root? Or can I be rooted and when a new stock update comes out can I still update it and maintain my root? I know when root you cant do over the air can I just download the file and flash via odin?
5 android phones in the past, and you STILL have to ask this question??????
Sounds like you are the type of person who should NOT root...

I think the developer Chainfire has an app that will let you root and still get OTA updates. Poke around for his thread in the developers section to find it. I'll try to link it here in a few. Also I'm pretty sure you can go back to stock anytime you want, again Poke around in the developers thread for the download that can be flashed via odin.
However if you root, and install a custom recovery you will always be able to get the latest updates much earlier by flashing the roms that the developers will inevitable update much quicker than waiting for carrier updates. check the site galaxynote2root.com for a super easy one step process to both root and install Clockworkmod all in one to them be able to flash the Roms.
I'm not running any custom roms but my phone is rooted. When I try to run the latest update (the one that's 8.45megs) it works all the way through the reset but then says install interrupted.
Anyone experiencing the same?
generally speaking, rooted phones and OTA updates dont play well together..
Try using this before installing the update

Doesnt do didly lol. Its not for samsungs unless thats changed somehow.
You can install it, and pretend it works but it doesnt.. OTA RK it wont save you.
Whats so important about the ota you need it?
Find a nice rom to suit your needs.
Our devs will suit your rom needs a lot better than att!!
To hell with ota's I say!!

Edit: Do your own research, heres the devs thread for ya

Things may have changed but I still stand by what I said. Read and make yourvown decision. Gl!
Well. ..
If you have stock recovery. ..you could go into your super user app and remove root. If you need stock recovery run CF Auto root then remove SU within the super user application.
Then attempt the OTA update. .( may not work due too tripped flash counter anyway)...
If it works or not, run CF auto root to get your root back.
But you would need to flash your alternative recovery again once the attempt is done if you want a custom recovery.
Long shots yes, but the OTA interface "WILL" check for a modified binary most likely.
Just thinking out loud...g

In the ever changing market of roots and exploits I believe it would be nice to have a device specific rooting "poll". the other reason I'm starting this thread is because I can't seem to root my phone tried towelroot but it says my device is not supported. Im running stock 4.2.2 and I want to root mainly so I can back everything up before I custom install stock 4.4.2
Towelroot works for 4.4
Being on 4.2.2 you could try the Safe-Root method depending on your actual Firmware. Otherwise you have to stick to rooting through CWM.
All methods have their threads here. Please read them.
You could also backup your data with adb without root and after update restore this adb backup to your device. So there's no need to root before installing custom 4.4.2
CWM all day! so fast and easy to do plus it's easy to unroot.

http://www.s4miniarchive.com/search/label/Root Find your model version and read the instructions, you won't regret it.
4.2.2 can be rooted using Kingo. Doesn't trip knox.
Tap tap tapatalked from my I9192
I have read several threads on debloating this device, including this really good one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/help/debloating-t2805503 . The info there that eliminating split-screen capability should be most useful!
However, I don't have enough experience to find the answer to my question from what I have read. If I use any of the relevant root tools to de-crap the machine, or if I just root, will I lose the ability to receive OTA updates? If so, is there any way to apply them short of waiting for someone to come out with a new ROM?
Is freezing with Titanium safe for this purpose, since nothing is removed? Or do I need to save the old stock ROM, and reload it, do the update, and then re-root and re-freeze everything?
Thank you for your indulgence, given that I'm sure that the answer is in several threads and I just don't know enough to identify it.
Root = no OTA, simple. Once an update comes out easiest thing to do is to download the new firmware from somewhere like Sammobile and flash using Odin, then re-root. Sammobile often releases the update before the OTA starts rolling out!

For titanium backup freezing just stops the apk from running and is safe because nothing is removed and when you install a new rom update, the things that were frozen will unfreeze since it requires root to freeze apps. Just follow what @killall said and that should do it. And if you root you can install twrp to backup your whole rooted rom as it was and restore back too it if you did something wrong while you were on the rooted rom.

Doesn't flashing with Odin wipe data also, so it's not just simple re-rooting? Rooting doesn't prevent updating with Kies if I'm correct, does it matter whether you have custom recovery or not?

No, It should wipe the device's data.
I found a way to set my device status to official even though im rooted. Since I set the status to official I can check for updates without the custom software popup but I not tryed installing any updates since there are not any new updates atm.

I mean that of course it doesn't wipe your pictures and such, but flashing with Odin will wipe application data and restoring it from e.g. Titanium backup does take long time.
Here's hoping the custom ROM community picks up the slack and puts out a decent ROM this device sorely needs...

I have a Galaxy tab s 10.5inch and rooted with cfautoroot and have twrp recovery installed. I used an xposed module called wanam xposed and changed my status to official. There is a ota update right now and Im scared to try the update becuase I dont know the risks. I have super su pro with survival mode on. Im not sure if its safe to do an ota update on rooted device as I dont want to brick it.
