Trying to figure out if I should root using the original method the install updated rom or do ota then root with new method. Is there a benefit either way? The one thing I was worried about was it seemed like there were issues with installing updated roms. Anyone have an opinion on which root method is easier?

Post this question in Q&A or reply to one of the root threads and ask it. This really clutters up this forum.
Also, just root then update.
Dont Update
Never do an OTA (OVER THE AIR) UPDATE....IF YOU WANT ROOT IN THE FUTURE
What you need to do is root then flash a rom that is built off of the newest update.
and BTW post threads in the right forums so next time you wont get you ass ripped
yeah sorry was just thinking it was relevant not a forum expert though will move or delete thanks for the reply

As the others said, this should be in Q&A. To go into more depth though on why you want to root then update, all of the more recent root efforts are based around flashing an earlier version of the stock rom to allow rooting. If you were to update and then root you would be going forward then backward in order to go forward again (ie. update, downgrade, root, update). Doesn't make much sense.
+1 Root then unlock nand then flash custom, no need to update, most customs are based off of newest update, as previously stated of course

I have been unable to find a thread that discusses my issue. Samsung GS3/AT&T (SGH-i747) I have been using a stock ROM rooted until AT&T pushed an OTA update to 4.0.4 baseband I747UCLH9. Now Superuser logs show Superuser, Avast and ES Task Manager had root access accepted, but Titanium and another app (Root Checker) are being denied.
a. am I still rooted and just need to tweak something?
b. If i re-flash superuser will I be sorry?
I don't really want to flash a new ROM or wipe. Any advice including links and steps would be greatly appreciated.
Just a disclaimer: I am a noob to Android. Having said that, I also rooted my AT&T GS3 and then without even thinking accepted the OTA update. The update to UCHL9 build wiped my root. Again since I'm a noob, I spent hours reading through posts to figure out what happened. I finally found some good information in posts on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
On page 110 of the thread there is a post by 'haywood' that I followed to root my device again. Of course, I did have to wipe and flash again which I understand you do not want to do.
Maybe reading through some more of the posts on that thread will lead you to a different method.

lol I went looking for that post and ended up reading through 4 pages lol. Thanks for the tip, Just for future reference you can right click on the post number and copy url and paste it for a link to a specific post like so http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31816685&postcount=1100 as not everyone has the same setting for page display, your page 110 was my page 22 lol.

Some OTA updates will wipe out your root permissions. You can get around this using SuperSU or RootKeeper. With rootkeeper you just backup your root permissions, update via OTA, and then go back to Rootkeeper to restore root. Worked for me going from UCALG1 to UCLH9.
I have had a few different android devices that didn't want to give root to TB and a few other apps. I would suggest downloading SuperSU from the play store (it's free) and seeing if your TB will get root then. Definitely check in to an OTA rootkeeper so that it will back up your SU + busybox in the likely case that an OTA you try to install will wipe root. On that note, if you removed any bloat or system apps, the OTA's will fail. I think that also applies to build.prop and other system mods too, because trying to update my AT&T S3 has been a nightmare since I flashed stock rom w/ root injected and removed a few apps. I came to the conclusion that for me, it is much easier to just flash a custom ROM + kernel (I recommend Codename Android + Lean Kernel) via ClockworkMod Recovery and never worry about updates being pushed on me from the carrier. There are definitely more options that way, because YOU choose when you think it is worth it to update, but there is much more room for error, so do your research, and then do it again just to make sure!
I'm new to XDA, we have to start somewhere, right? :good:
So I really love my phone the way it is. But I do want root because there's a couple things that I like to do and rooting is required. However, if I root and if there's an update for my phone. Do I have to go back to STOCK get the new updated version and then root? Or can I be rooted and when a new stock update comes out can I still update it and maintain my root? I know when root you cant do over the air can I just download the file and flash via odin?
5 android phones in the past, and you STILL have to ask this question??????
Sounds like you are the type of person who should NOT root...

I think the developer Chainfire has an app that will let you root and still get OTA updates. Poke around for his thread in the developers section to find it. I'll try to link it here in a few. Also I'm pretty sure you can go back to stock anytime you want, again Poke around in the developers thread for the download that can be flashed via odin.
However if you root, and install a custom recovery you will always be able to get the latest updates much earlier by flashing the roms that the developers will inevitable update much quicker than waiting for carrier updates. check the site galaxynote2root.com for a super easy one step process to both root and install Clockworkmod all in one to them be able to flash the Roms.
I'm not running any custom roms but my phone is rooted. When I try to run the latest update (the one that's 8.45megs) it works all the way through the reset but then says install interrupted.
Anyone experiencing the same?
generally speaking, rooted phones and OTA updates dont play well together..
Try using this before installing the update
OTA RootKeeper

Doesnt do didly lol. Its not for samsungs unless thats changed somehow.
You can install it, and pretend it works but it doesnt.. OTA RK it wont save you.
Whats so important about the ota you need it?
Find a nice rom to suit your needs.
Our devs will suit your rom needs a lot better than att!!
To hell with ota's I say!!
Edit: Do your own research, heres the devs thread for ya

Things may have changed but I still stand by what I said. Read and make yourvown decision. Gl!
Well. ..
If you have stock recovery. ..you could go into your super user app and remove root. If you need stock recovery run CF Auto root then remove SU within the super user application.
Then attempt the OTA update. .( may not work due too tripped flash counter anyway)...
If it works or not, run CF auto root to get your root back.
But you would need to flash your alternative recovery again once the attempt is done if you want a custom recovery.
Long shots yes, but the OTA interface "WILL" check for a modified binary most likely.
Just thinking out loud...g

As per title I'm stuck with T-Mobile on the Android KitKat 4.4.2 version. I have root, TWRP, Bootloader is unlocked, and I know how to use backup apps such as Titanium.(thank you guides)
What I'm trying to do is upgrade to the latest version of stock Android without losing root, apps and TWRP. Is there a way to do something like this?
Sorry if this is a newbie question. Thanks to anyone who helps me out in advanced!

yes it's very easy if you already have root and twrp. Download the latest updated rom you want and flash the bootstrap 1st then the rom. There's roms that already have root access so it's even easier
I have a very vague understanding how any of this works. I managed to get this far thanks to everyone who helped make the tutorials I used to make it to were I am now.
What exactly is a bootstrap?
Same for the ROM Would it be easier to aquire an OTA with root so I wouldn't have to go through all the time and effort that Titanium backups take? Or would I still lose all my apps? I'm trying to do this the as hassle free as possible. If the OTA suggestion is not an option, where would I find a rooted stock Android Marshmallow ROM(if such exists)? Or would I not be able to jump from KK to MM?..
Thanks for your reply! and again sorry for being a complete script kiddie

pm me and I will help you step by step
I have unlocked my bootloader, I have gone through the process of installing TWRP RC1, I have also installed SU 2.79 as guides have shown to do. I have also installed adaway after rooting, as well as titanium backup.
What is left to do now? I have read that if I stay on stock but rooted, when a security update comes out next month and I take it, my device turns into brickmode. I don't intend to stay on stock, I am taking the time to learn all the ins and outs of each rom that exists currently and trying to make a decision which one I like best, and especially what kind of challenging process exists for flashing the rom as well as putting TWRP back on then SU, and the confusing part about doing the vendor image. So yea, still learning. The last time I rooted and flashed anything was LGG3 days, so it's a learning curve again.
Am I supposed to be using a flash drive for anything? Or is that not needed if following the installation process for whatever rom is out there.
Thanks in advance, everyone has been very helpful so far.
There is no need for a flash drive. You can easily disable OTA on stock, and there is no need for a custom rom. In fact, I am rooted on stock. Also, the OTA should not be able to go through while rooted but I have seen myself that it does work surprisingly. My guess is this is because of the dual partitions, but no, you will not get bricked if you accept an OTA. The worst that would happen is that you would lose root. I'm guessing this is due to the dual slots. The OTA overwrites the other slot and swaps it on reboot. You should be able to just get in again but without root.
And if it does fail you can download the full OTA from google and install it with TWRP or adb install it.
Turn off updates in dev options. A couple of people have gotten hit with big data bills from it downloading over and over.
I'm unlocked but not rooted. I installed Franko kernel but need to be rooted to use his app. I'm trying to figure out root yet stay stock for now.

So you want to root it now so you can use his app? Second to the last post in the thread below.
