Hello everyone, so AT&T updated my phone and foxfi used to work just fine for hotspot but since Android 4.3 I can't so I need to root. I've seen a few threads in this site on some roots but don't get much info about them. How can I root my GS3 running 4.3? I've never rooted in my life so I'm making sure I do this right the first time . If anyone can please help me get the proper root for my GS3. I'm not wanting all these custom roms and stuff. I just want to be able to have free wifi hotspot and also a way to remove all that crap Bloatware.

- Has Anyone had an update to this yet? I am having the exact same issue where several things no longer allow me the permissions I once had. At&t sent out an update that kept popping up on my screen every five minutes for like 2 days so I Finally upgraded and I do not like the new version.
- I am especially ticked that they removed the option to hide Applications now. I use my phone for work and don't need clients and coworkers having easy access to personal apps and data since I collaborate on my phone quite a bit in meetings, plane rides etc.where my phone is passed around. So any new app I try to add also requires root access to do the trick and combined with not being able to use pdanet+ or foxfi to tether I have a big need to root now. I tried to root using GalaxyS3RootATT.zip - which did work on an earlier version of 4.2 but only ended up wiping my phone after the 4.3 update (i think this was the 2nd update for the same OS version 4.3) but it did install super user. However root test fail to show that it is properly rooted. Very Frustating and VERY nervous about Bricking my phone so I want to make sure its done right. Ive only rooted a handful of times every couple of years when I get a new phone and the process seems to change constantly due to so many codes and manufacturers and models and carriers etc.
Anyway please help ASAP. Thanks

The instructions here worked like a charm after I upgraded to 4.3. Rest assured, CF auto root is compatible with the latest firmware. Just be very careful and follow the instructions meticulously.
First time rooter
Sorry if i don't understand whats going on this is the first time rooting for me.
I am trying to root my phone to be able to run 4.4 on it and have followed the steps to root it using odin3 and CF-Auto-Root but once i get back to my home page and try to use superSU I get an error message stating "Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped." along with "Security information An application attempted to access system on your device without authorization. This attempt has been blocked".
Sorry if this is an easy fix or i left out important information but i would just like some help getting off the gound

You need to install a custom recovery in order to flash a custom ROM. You don't necessarily need root to load a custom ROM. Are you running a stock 4.3 ROM?

I have not personally put Knox on the phone but when i go into settings/security/device administrators. It lists Knox as one with an unchecked box so dose that mean its on the phone? and if so how would i go about removing it.
also if i don't necessarily need to root to load a custom ROM where could i be directed to be able to load 4.4?
Thanks!

The 4.3 OTA installs Knox without checking if you want it or not. Fortunately there are ways to remove it after the fact. Most suggestions I have seen recommend using CF-AutoRoot, updating SuperUser, and then going into SuperUser to disable Knox. You don't need root to install custom ROMs but as far as I know you need it to remove Knox. Removing Knox seems to be necessary in order to get the custom recovery required to flash custom ROMs.
|Guide|How-To| Root & Install Custom Recovery for 4.3 Update
[CWM][4.2.2/4.3/4.4] DE-SAMSUNGNIZER Script V5.0.0 - Clean all unneded Samsung Crap contains scripts to remove Samsung bloat and others that seem to just remove Knox.
I was about to offer no comment on the ROM to which you linked because it is in the Verizon forum, but then I noticed the d2lte in the description. My understanding is that d2lte is good for all US SGS3 variants. (Gummy says this in it's forum.) Maybe you can get around using a custom recovery with some ROMs, but the Gummy ROM comes as a recovery flashable zip. So, it looks like: root, remove knox, install custom recovery, flash rom.

From reading quite a few ROM threads I have learned that the updater scripts have code that indicates which devices they will work on and will cause the install to fail if you are trying to flash an incompatible ROM to a device. Sometimes these scripts have not been updated to reflect ROM compatibility with devices and editing the updater script will correct this. This is best verified in the ROM thread. Something to check for yourself before posting would be that you are using a compatible ROM version. The d2lte files should work with any of the US variants. If you downloaded one of the older files there is then the need to make sure it works with your device, unless you are confident about editing the script.
Other possible causes of your error:
1) it could be that the zip is on the external_sd and the installer expects it on the internal
2) you have a bad ROM download

Root problem solved
I have an AT&T S3 SGH-i747. The problems I had with rooting was all related to Knox, unfortunately I had no way to get rid of Knox.
Please follow the web link and follow all the steps in order. The short version of the steps is you install the TWRP recovery using Odin, then boot back into recovery , install SuperSU and then Knox removal script via recovery. After that enjoy whatever custom ROM you want. I'm running the KitKat 4.4 now :good:
As a note getting to the correct download link can be a pain due to the bait and switch of the "download now" button with other shareware apps but the links provided to lead you to the correct zip files.

CF-AutoRoot should work fine. But theres also Towelroot now, which is much, much, much easier!
After rooting with Towelroot, install SuperSU from the play store. Then open it and update the binary and disable knox.

Hey guys,
I was wondering if someone could help me a little. I just bought this tablet (2014 version) and it has MK1.
I am trying to read information on how to root it but can't figure it out. I tried to flash autoroot with odin but it errored. I didn't find mk1 autoroot anywhere so i used autorootp600.mj4.tar.md5. Is there autoroot for MK1 and i can use? Also i guess i will need to have custom recovery file for my stock OS, where do i get that?
Thank you in advance for all the help.
Edit: I finally located autoroot for mk1 and it worked. But i do have a question: why do we need to flash it with Stock Recovery after? btw i am using this tutorial : http://theunlockr.com/2013/12/17/root-samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-2014-edition/
What version do you have?
P600 (wifi only)
P601 (3g)
P605 (lte)
?
They have different chipsets and different root methods.
[e] I see you have found the correct version if you want to get OTA updates you need to flash stock recovery so your device status is not custom. But it basically doesn't matter since you can always flash updates through odin. You may choose a custom recovery that offers you a lot of cool features instead.

I believe...... so you can still get OTA updates and some functions like All Share Cast may not work if you don't.
The thing is, even if you have stock recovery but modify your system in other ways like uninstall alot of bloatware or use busybox your status will be custom anyway so I recommend a custom recovery for the safety of using backups etc.
Thank you guys for responding so quickly.
It's starting to make sense.
My device is Wifi only so SM-P600 (mk1). I rooted it but haven't flashed with stock recovery. Would you guys recommend i do a custom recovery or keep it stock? Where do i get stock recovery from? i can't seem to find it.

Ok, that makes sense i went though it. So i see that there is ClockMod and TWRP and GooManager, do they do pretty much the same thing?
So as far as Roms go, i see that in Development section there are few ROMs available but some say they are for MJ9 or ML1, i cannot use those on my MK1 right? Do ROMs from note 10.1 (2013) work on this device? Is there a list of ROMs that would work on my device.
Sorry, guys i know these are newb questions but i just could never figure out some of this stuff.

Goomanager is an app use it to flash twrp recovery.
TWRP and clockmod (CWM) they are 2 different tools but have the exact same functions, just a user choice. Sometimes custom rom preferred one over the other. I like TWRP a bit better (easier).
is there a way to check if it is rooted or not?

I've read as much as I can and I just need a little more help. I want to be able to root my T-Mobile Galaxy S3, SGH-T999.
1. Is there any other way to pull files from /data/data without rooting?
2. Can I just do a simple root and then later root with CWM or TWRP using another option?
3. I thought rooted was rooted, what is the need for "insecure boot"? Is that the only way to get a file image backup of my partitions?
4. None of the rooting options in the Skipsoft Android Toolkit wipe the device, correct?
5. Is the only way to be able to "recover" back to stock by installing a "custom recovery"?
All of the options include "custom recovery". What if I just want to root the device and install a custom recovery later? Or it custom recovery included in all the options so I can get back to stock if I mess up? Thanks!
I am not sure why you'd need to go to such extent.
By your question on Insecure Kernel, I assume, you have Stock 4.3 update. If so, please flash SuperSU Zip via Custom Recovery. You can Also flash Root66 of 4.3 (UVUEMJC ) to get Root as well. None of these methods are destructive and make you loose your data.
As to your other questions, /data/data should be accessible read only to Good File explorers such as ES File Explorer. My Backup Pro should be able to backup those files too. Insecure boot is needed to root as SELINUX Enforcing will not let you have Stable Root. Best Flash ATT Insecure Kernel Posted on this sub forum. I don't understand what you mean by "Recover to Stock".
can't do anything without root
I tried ES File explorer and 2 others, they show /data/data as blank. Most everywhere I've looked says you have to have root
In that case please post your Current Android version and what you see under Baseband. What step we take next depends on this information.

Thanks, this is great. I rooted the same model phone that was on OS 4.1.2 by uploading root66 with Odin and it worked in one step. I see now that root66 is not the way to go on the 4.3 phone just yet. I will follow your tips. I see too that I have to get rid of Knox and make sure the recovery partition does not get reset. Think I should put busybox out there too, or with TWRP and SuperSU do I have all I need?

How do I get this rooted?
-Do i follow this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291839
Seems like that's only confirmed for 4.2.2..
What else should I take note of? I've read things about 'Recovery' and unlocking bootloader.
-Should I do a recovery? How do I do that?
-Do I have to worry about the bootloader?
-Will I be able to get further ota updates after rooting?
Should I wait for 4.4.4 before rooting?
Thank you in advance. I've done alot of reading but I'm still paranoid and confused...

I don't have a 5120 but everything I have read confirms that CF Autoroot works without issue on that device. Just make sure after boot up you install SuperSU, update binary, and set it to apply upon system boot. If it doesn't work the first time keep trying. As a warning....this root method will trip Knox and void your warranty. Can follow the steps HERE to root.
You will want to install a custom recovery to flash roms (PhilZ or TWRP). However, changing the recovery, bootloader, etc. will prevent you from taking OTA updates. This is not such a bad thing because you never know if a new OTA will destroy root and lock the device. It is better to let the devs modify it first and then flash it safely. Usually only takes a day or so for devs to do this.
As for changing the bootloader, it depends on the rom you flash. Some will be fine running from older bootloader and some require the KK bootloader. Just check the first post of the rom and it should give you the requirements.

I just wasn't sure on the details of these steps, and wasn't sure where to find more detail. I think I've figured it out now.
First I'd follow these steps: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/samsu...n5100-wifi-philz-touch-advanced-cwm-recovery/
Then, I'd use philz to install the custom kernel (edit: and ROM). I haven't been able to find any step-by-step instructions, however. But these seem close enough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDOY3Oi1VX8
Does this all sound correct?

I do not know of any root method compatible with the N8 that will not trip Knox. Towelroot is not compatible otherwise it would be an obvious choice.
Yes...looks like that walkthrough will work fine for installing PhilZ.
Why are you installing a custom kernel? Are you sticking with the stock rom or flashing a custom one? A lot of roms already come with the kernel packaged.

I'm installing a custom ROM & Kernel because the accuracy of the pen is not very good on my device, and I primarily brought it for note taking. My understanding is that civato's ROM/kernel will fix this (hopefully!).
But I didn't mean to imply that I'm only installing a custom kernel but keeping the stock ROM. I was planning on doing both, as described in civato's kernel+ROM release thread.

Your device is on the list so is compatible. There are also some basic instructions listed for how to root.

Thanks for your response. I have only one corcern left. In the link you posted, on top of the table of CF-Auto-root, it mentions that if the bootloader is locked this might brick the device! How can I make sure that my bootloader is unlocked prior to start rooting.
Previuosly, I had my note 8 rooted with CF auto root via odine when it was on jelly bean 4.1.2. Does this mean that it is safe to root it again with new CF auto root for 4.4.2?
It's just a warning pal I rooted fine from 4.4.2 with chainfire autorotate it's just a precaution before proceeding as with any flashing procedure it contains a risk of bricking

How did you update to 4.4.2? Rom flash or OTA? Did you manually update the bootloader?
As far as I know Samsung doesn't usually lock bootloaders unless it is carrier dictated. It is usually common on HTC and Moto devices.
Better to be safe than sorry though.

I updated to 4.4.2 via Kies with samsung's released firmware. I havent done any other flashing apart from this. So, I suppose rooting must be fine, right?

Sorry but I can't/won't confirm whether or not that particular model is safe to root after 4.4.2 upgrade. Maybe someone with more knowledge on that version can chime in. I wouldn't think it would be an issue but don't want to steer you wrong. The bootloader could be locked.

thanks, I will dig in more on this and will post here if I find something useful.
I just got this phone today and it came pre installed with 4.4.2 firmware. Now I can root it which is not the issue. the issue is no matter what I use, I cannot install custom roms. freegee does not work, I can use CWM via g pro kitkat but installing anything always results in an error 7.
what are my options considering this?

Which method did you use to root the phone? It's said that stock 4.4.2 can't be rooted correctly. The best thing to do, if you want to go through the trouble, is to flash back to the stock JB, which is v10g if you're using e980. Follow the guide line giving in the posting below, and you will get the best result.

That's why because towel root and freegee doesn't work on stock 4.4.2. I think you have to use universal root and then flash cwm6.0.47 to give you both recovery and unlock the bootloader. Flash back to JB is much better approach .

I did. I am on 4.1.2 and I used kingroot as opposed to towelroot, and used freegee to install 6.0.47. I grabbed CM11 from the website, went to flash it and was hit with an error 7.
Something may be wrong when you flashed back to JB, is it booting normal? You install busybox too right?
