Two dead t989's in the same week - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

My wife and sister in law both have a stock unrooted T989. Since Monday, they have both just died. Wont turn on, nothing. No combos work. I read the threads about faulty power buttons, but it doesn't seem like that's the problem with these. I'm wondering if the emmc's that were faulty are starting to fail.

Hopefully that's not the case, it's not a known issue for our phone model but there is another person on the thread with an issue having only 48 MB for his internal memory, so it "might" be possible.
If you have not done so yet, you should try using a USB Jig to see if you can get into 'Download mode'. If you can, then you would be able to flash a stock rom on the phone and hopefully get the phone working again.
Otherwise, since you said the phones are still stock and if you still have warranty coverage with your phone provider you should be able to send it back to them to get it fixed.

You can go Samsung direct. Had problems worth both my t-959 (vibrant) and t-989. Straight to Samsung and back within 10 days.

I'm Screwed & Offering A Bounty

So here's the deal: I got my E4GT and rooted it. Everything was fine until I let my son play a game on my phone and the USB cable became unplugged. He decided to "help" me and plug it back in. In doing so, he bent the cable end to 90 degrees and jacked up my USB port. It will charge, but the PC does not recognize it for data. I worked with another user on here to come up with any ideas to restore to stock so I could exchange it. The closest that I came was going back to a stock kernel. Unfortunately, it is now stuck in a boot loop and I can't flash anything else since I am back to stock kernel. I tried to take it to my local store for repair, figuring that I would offer the guy some cash to just get it back to booting correctly. Unfortunately, I must have the one guy at the one store where they don't bend the rules. So right now I have a paperweight. I will pay anyone who can come up with a fix a $50 bounty. I'm really hoping that I don't have to just pitch this thing.
Thanks and feel free to PM any solutions.
Do you have Sprint TEP? If so, you can probably get it exchanged for no cost. If not, it would be $35.

Just because you're on a stock kernel doesn't mean you can't flash in Odin. I don't understand. Can you or can you not get into download mode (Vol. Down + Power)?
Sent from the future.
Have you tried using a different USB cable than the one that got bent?
Here's the ODIN tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337 and this a back to stock you can use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282420 this will be your only way out since you said you don't have CWR any longer cause of the stock kernel that "someone" had you install.
"IF' you are able to get in to download mode, this TAR will get you back to stock so you can start fresh. If the USB connection is jacked up for good, then you're sol.
In that case I would odin some weird **** just to jack it up completely then call in for a warranty replacement free of charge.
You should be able to do a "factory reset" with stock recovery, this may stop the boot loop.

And here is the winner...I have done this with several devices and it always works:
Put it in the microwave.
Set the cook time for 2 second.
Press start.
It will completely fry the inside of your device. It will never turn on again. They will be unable to tell what caused the phone to malfunction. IT WILL NEVER TURN ON AGAIN...LOL!

I CAN get into Odin mode, but because my USB port is jacked up the PC doesn not recognize it so Odin does not see it.

This may be a question for a Sprint rep, but would they have noted my records since I went to the store to have it repaired and admitted that it was rooted? If not then OI may take a damage route out if it'll work.

Firstly, we're not supposed to reject phones for root. Our M&P's clearly state we work on rooted phones and does NOT void any warranty with us. So either call him out on that or find a different tech.
Secondly, the microwave idea? If i see so much as any board damage, the phone's getting rejected. Then your definitely put of luck because your device will be flagged as DBR an ineligible for exchange. Not a smart idea, considering responsible techs such as my self make it a point to inspect every phone internally if it's not turning on at all.

So how exactly do I "call him out"? My only option for a repair store is a horrible place. They are the only major store for MILES around and treat EVERY customer like ****. If I just say that he's supposed to work on it and there is nothing saying that the warranty is voided, he most likely is going to tell me to get bent.

is the usb port on the phone bent? Like loose or anything? you could always lookup how to open the phone and solder a replacement usb jack on. I believe its a simple 3 to 4 point solder on the edge of the board.

[Q] Download Mode Not Working After KP8 Install

I was trying to go back to 2.3.x using ODIN after I installed the KP8 (update for a "leaked" ics) on my phone. Now my computer won't read the phone on download mode. Anyone have a fix for this?
Or do you know if that USB JIG will fix it?

Yea..... GSM + CDMA = your screwed
There is no leak for ICS for our phones yet.
So you flashed the GSM version.
2 options:
Sprint insurance
or
buy a new phone
No one has been successful at jtag, I wouldn't even waste my time.

Look up JTAG on Google. I believe they charge $50 for unbricking service. You'll be out of a phone for awhile, but it's not like the phone is going to do you any good in its current state anyways.

I can vouch that nothing will work. I had someone send me theirs to try and,I installed drivers through Kies, got drivers from XDA, tried a USB jig, hard reset, my SD card with Mobile Odin on it, etc, etc, etc. If when you hold volume up and power and you have the green Android guy holding a box and your phone says I9100, its jtag or nothing. I spent a week (about an hour a day) trying everything. If your phone powers on but you can't connect to wifi or SD card isn't recognized and no network is found, don't even waste your time. I tried because I hoped I could pull it off with the help of some of the great minds from around here but it just wouldn't be recognized by Odin....and it does beep when I plug it into my laptop....so close yet so far

Asking for help not helpless remarks, if want to keep doing that I also live in Kansas City just in case you want to keep goin at it. Let's keep these forums full of usefull tools not full of useless comments.

Why did my Galaxy Nexus brick itself?

I have been using my fine since release from Verizon. Most of the time on 4.0.4 deodexed stock w/ FrancoKernel Milestone 4 and Radio I515.09 V.FA02 / I515.FA02.
Phone is in great condition. It was not overheating at the time of shut down.
Randomly the screen went dark with a bunch of lines (acting like it was dying).
It stayed on that frozen line screen until I pulled the battery.
It restarted with the Google logo and just sat there.
Pulled again. Now phone does not charge or turn on trying 3 different batteries.
Took battery and sim out for 10 minutes and still nothing.
I didn't mess with voltage or overclock or anything like that.
---
Should I send it in for warranty claim? I'm afraid they will get it working and see my rooted phone with private information and a ROM that allows tethering.

Yeah if it doesn't turn on no matter what you've tried, it's most likely an unrecoverable brick. I've had it happen to me on an HTC phone randomly and it sucked. Aside from what you've already tried, I'd say maybe leave the battery in, plug the phone into the charger and wait for a bit and see if anything happens. Other than that you're SOL.
I also highly doubt that Verizon will be able to coax the phone back to life if it's a hardware fault.
damn. thanks.
I had a Bionic do that, it seemed like it just shorted out one night. I went to a Verizon store and tried different batteries and such in it with no luck. Probably just a hardware defect of some sort.
Mine did the same just the other day. Same exact way you described it for me. I tried to revive it using ODIN and OMAP Flash but it gets stuck at writing to the NAND then fails. I actually searched the forum and it seems to have happened quite a lot. I'm guessing its a hardware defect that some of the Nexus have just like how it was on the first batch of Galaxy S i9000M phones. (I know because mine corrupted twice and Samsung refused to fix it the second time.) Some threads and even Chainfire's Nexus killed itself it seems:

With that said, there might be one last thing you can do which is the OMAP flash JTAG via USB if you haven't tried it yet:
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f63...-i9100g-via-usb-cable-freeeeeeeeeeee-1465412/
This will try to flash a bootloader for you where in you can access fastboot, etc. If you can access Download Mode, you can try to use ODIN to bring it back as well.
If ODIN or OMAP Flash fails to write to the NAND then its hardware issue and needs to be replaced. Hope you have warranty still.
Thanks Dawg. Nothing worked.
VZW tech support didn't even ask one question and sent me a new phone which arrives today. It must be common.
Loved my phone setup too.
I have to start backing everything up to my PC. I had a feeling not having an SD card would burn me.

Rom flash error?

I was flashing the Energy Rom and I received and error when it was trying to install the kernel. I tried again, same thing. Foolishly, I rebooted instead of restoring. Now my phone won't turn on, led is off when plugged in. Looks dead. I plugged into my PC and it finds new hardware (which I think is a good sign), it is referring to my phone as QHSUSB_DLOAD. Also, when I hold the power down it seems to try to reboot as the computer finds the new hardware again. I tried with the volume up, home, and power same response, also volume down, home, and power, same response. My phone was successfully rooted prior to this and running perfectly. I made a nandroid back up prior to flash. Not sure what to do at this point. Please advise!! Thank you all in advance. I am using T-Mobile too.
Looks like I am bricked from what I have been reading. Phone is under 2 weeks old...can I send it back or should I just report it lost at this point and pay $130 and have a new phone in a day?
Called insurance and told them I lost the phone. Hopefully there will be a fix for this in the future and I will have a backup phone that I can sell.
you hardbricked it....lol. Even if a fix comes out carriers are now blacklisting lost&stolen phones.

Carriers have been doing that for a long time. Go LOL at your face, dude was asking advice you ****head. Realistically he could have just called T-Mobile and say the device wouldn't turn on, justifying a free warranty exchange.
Hey I actually had the same problem. I bought my phone from Craigslist and didn't know if I could go through T-Mobile for exchanging. I researched this problem for the Galaxy S2 and other Samsung devices, and I read that people sent their devices into Samsung and got it fixed. I decided to do the same; I called Samsung and explained my problem to the rep. She emailed me a UPS label for the phone, and I sent it in. They replaced my phone with a new unit, and it should be back tomorrow.

[Q] Does anyone have any experience with TEP and faulty phones?

I've had my Epic 4G Touch for well over a year and a month ago I noticed the power button was starting to feel "spongy". It still worked but it lacked that crisp feeling when you pressed it down and released it. This afternoon however, after flashing FI27, my power button no longer works whatsoever. I doubt it was the ROM and more due to the amount of times I've held this button down for recovery access, download mode, etc.
So the power button doesn't work, phone starts automatically when I remove the battery and put it back in. Otherwise the phone is in near-perfect condition and its not rooted.
Anyone know if TEP is going to cover this for free? I've looked online at some resources for TEP and everything is vague or above my level of reading between the lines.
Thanks in advance.
I just had this happen to me last week actually. Just plug the charger in and it'll wake up the phone. Set it back to stock unrooted and bring it into Sprint. They'll either try to fix it or give you a new phone. I had a replacement phone that night for $0.
You might have to pull the battery a few times, but you still should be able to get into download mode
Sounds like the internal button is either stuck or broken, if you take it to a repair center they might be able to fix it for you. However idk what cost would be if any, I dont keep any for of "insurance" on my phone, if i break it I swap to one of the others I have til I buy a new one. I tend to keep my phones mint and don't want to pay for a refurbished one when i have a bunch laying in a drawer.

I'm on FI27 w/ the newest AGAT kernel but just in case I used Chainfires' Triangle Away to get rid of the yellow triangle at boot. Outside of volume down + power button I don't know another way to get into download mode and since my power button is inop I'm kind of stuck.
Do you know of another way to get back into download mode? I have the self-extracting Odin file for EL29 just waiting to erase all evidence of root.
EDIT: Nevermind. Turns out the button is just stuck. I put the battery back in while holding volume down and it gave me download mode access. That solves one problem, lol.
If your capable, you can crack it open and clean the internal button. If its just sticky that should fix it. While you're in there you can look for actual damage which will tell you to go ahead and take it in for repair.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to do that, though I'm sure YouTube has a couple videos detailing how-to. I'll give it a looksee and if it doesn't scare me away I'll give it a shot. If its something I can do, might as well.
Does it still work now after booting back up? Mine didn't work but for some reason if i hit volume up+power i could get into download mode. But when it was actually booted, it wouldnt work at all, nor would it work inside CWM. Weird thing is when I took it into Sprint the touchscreen started having issues too. So that's probably another reason why I just got a replacement.

I have been 4 months past due with nearly an $800 bill at one point and still no restrictions i have also have a few older phones and some windows phones replaced at no charge in the past but that took a little more work then this one...Ive was even able to get them to credit my account $300 instead of using my 2 upgrades on phones... just call be polite if that dont work try again with another rep..
btw the sprint store i took it to didnt note it on my account if they tell you you must goto a store kindly refuse saying you dont have time.. if the battle seems endless ask for a supervisor twice..
Where did you call to? Was your phone cracked or physically damaged? Shiii I want a free phone too!

It's things like that that make it harder for others who actually need replacements to get them.

Read my comment, i need a replacement as well, by lock/power button isnt working either.
I went to my local Sprint store this afternoon and apparently I don't have TEP on my phone. Last month I had an upgrade but I'm happy with my E4GT so I let my wife use it so she could get the EVO LTE. We did this through Best Buy Mobile. My wife has a friend that works there so it's where *she* does all her cellphone business. For some reason my TEP was cancelled on my E4GT upon upgrade and unbeknownst to me for the last month and a half I've had no insurance. :/
I called Sprint customer support and explained what happened and in 3-business days TEP will be reinstated on my phone, no charge, and all will be well in the world. The guy at the Sprint store also said had I had TEP this issue would be fixed via direct-exchange at no-cost to me.
I also tried fixing it myself but I got scared when the couldn't separate the screen from the case and gave up before I borked it.
