So here's the deal: I got my E4GT and rooted it. Everything was fine until I let my son play a game on my phone and the USB cable became unplugged. He decided to "help" me and plug it back in. In doing so, he bent the cable end to 90 degrees and jacked up my USB port. It will charge, but the PC does not recognize it for data. I worked with another user on here to come up with any ideas to restore to stock so I could exchange it. The closest that I came was going back to a stock kernel. Unfortunately, it is now stuck in a boot loop and I can't flash anything else since I am back to stock kernel. I tried to take it to my local store for repair, figuring that I would offer the guy some cash to just get it back to booting correctly. Unfortunately, I must have the one guy at the one store where they don't bend the rules. So right now I have a paperweight. I will pay anyone who can come up with a fix a $50 bounty. I'm really hoping that I don't have to just pitch this thing.
Thanks and feel free to PM any solutions.
Do you have Sprint TEP? If so, you can probably get it exchanged for no cost. If not, it would be $35.

Just because you're on a stock kernel doesn't mean you can't flash in Odin. I don't understand. Can you or can you not get into download mode (Vol. Down + Power)?
Sent from the future.
Have you tried using a different USB cable than the one that got bent?
Here's the ODIN tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337 and this a back to stock you can use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282420 this will be your only way out since you said you don't have CWR any longer cause of the stock kernel that "someone" had you install.
"IF' you are able to get in to download mode, this TAR will get you back to stock so you can start fresh. If the USB connection is jacked up for good, then you're sol.
In that case I would odin some weird **** just to jack it up completely then call in for a warranty replacement free of charge.
You should be able to do a "factory reset" with stock recovery, this may stop the boot loop.

And here is the winner...I have done this with several devices and it always works:
Put it in the microwave.
Set the cook time for 2 second.
Press start.
It will completely fry the inside of your device. It will never turn on again. They will be unable to tell what caused the phone to malfunction. IT WILL NEVER TURN ON AGAIN...LOL!
Voila...return the phone as "defective"

I CAN get into Odin mode, but because my USB port is jacked up the PC doesn not recognize it so Odin does not see it.

This may be a question for a Sprint rep, but would they have noted my records since I went to the store to have it repaired and admitted that it was rooted? If not then OI may take a damage route out if it'll work.

Firstly, we're not supposed to reject phones for root. Our M&P's clearly state we work on rooted phones and does NOT void any warranty with us. So either call him out on that or find a different tech.
Secondly, the microwave idea? If i see so much as any board damage, the phone's getting rejected. Then your definitely put of luck because your device will be flagged as DBR an ineligible for exchange. Not a smart idea, considering responsible techs such as my self make it a point to inspect every phone internally if it's not turning on at all.

So how exactly do I "call him out"? My only option for a repair store is a horrible place. They are the only major store for MILES around and treat EVERY customer like ****. If I just say that he's supposed to work on it and there is nothing saying that the warranty is voided, he most likely is going to tell me to get bent.

is the usb port on the phone bent? Like loose or anything? you could always lookup how to open the phone and solder a replacement usb jack on. I believe its a simple 3 to 4 point solder on the edge of the board.

So I've been rooted on my ET4G for some time, switching roms and such. Well, today I saw that a leaked version of ICS has been released for the SGS2. The model number GT-I9000 was the same, so I tried to flash it using ODIN. Unfortunately, the flash failed and I had to do a battery pull to remove the phone from download mode. I then rebooted the phone and am now given the Android System Recovery 3e screen. I tried doing a data wipe and cache partition, but I cannot get any progress. I've tried putting the phone in download mode and using ODIN to reflash a stock rom/modem/kernal but ODIN doesn't recognize the phone.
I'm fairly competent when it comes to root and custom roms, but I think I screwed up this time. Anybody have any ideas? I've tried removing the SD card, using a "Jig" and also a fresh battery. Nothing works.
Worst comes to worst, I'll have to take it to Sprint tomorrow and see what they say. In download mode it does day that I've got 1 count of custom binary. Will Sprint check for this and cause a void of warranty as a result?
Try removing drivers and reinstalling them. If you can get into Odin you should be good.

The way I understood it when someone fixed this before, you need to install the PC USB drivers for the INTERNATIONAL SGS2, then you can get into Odin. I could be wrong, though, since it sounds like your PC can't even tell there's a phone there.

You should know that GT-I9000 is the Galaxy S, GT-I9100 is the SII. As well as our model number being SPH-D710.
Just mentioning it because if you went with the GT-I9000 ICS build which is available as a custom stripped one its even further off than you had imagined.
So far I have tried to helpout 2 other plp on this same subject and to no avail. I am in contact with one of them he is getting a replacement phone and hopefully going to send me the screwed phone so I can either kill it completely or find a fix in the process.
I would just flash my own phone to try and digout but I have no backup. But I will update as soon as I can start testing for a fix for the comp not recognizing the phone.

dont even bother taking it to sprint, if u tell them what happened they're not going to help u, cause you were jail breaking etc on ur own risk, you'll just have to fix it or its a useless phone. Why dont u try installing the drivers for the GT-I9000 and see if that works.

I've filed an insurance claim and the phone is being replaced. I've searched far and wide and the only fix that *MIGHT* work, is JTAG.
I did take the phone to sprint, they opened it up and told me that it had water damage because they had no other explaination I guess.. I laughed, but there was no way for me to tell them "Nope, not water damage. I f***ed the software myself."
Jig doesn't work BTW

Heh well if I ever mess up dont worry myne will "have water damage" as well. Because Ill just end up filing a claim telling them its at the bottom of a lake.
Funny that they think it does but its usually called based on the stickers that change color on water contact.
The phone came in pristine external condition. When I attempted to charge it for the first time, I got the Android recovery screen but none of soft keys worked except the search button. It does not respond to home button either.
The phone will go into download mode but my computer will not recognize it.
I am no novice to Odin as I am coming from the OG Epic community.
I have also taken the phone to 2 Sprint stores and one unofficial phone repair shop. All have given up and said that they cannot wipe it clean because they get no response from the home or power button while in Android recovery.
Is it worth trying to fix or should I just send it back?

Send it to Jtag. He might be able to unbrick it and it's only $50

Where did you buy it from anyways? If they were willing to sell you a bricked phone I'd be surprised if they let you return it.
Thanks for this reference. I'd rather not spend more money trying to fix something that was supposed to work when I bought it. I just figured if there was something like a stock rom that would automatically install itself from an sd-card I would try it.
Now I am wondering whether or not the device is fully functional.
Thanks again for your help!

If the phone goes into recovery and download mode, it isn't bricked. Try a different USB port, cable, PC, etc. Make sure you have the Kies drivers installed, etc
With the stock recovery, the search button should be "enter". Try to wipe data if possible. If not, plug the phone in while in download mode, then on your computer go to device manager and update your drivers, it might recognize adb then and you would be able to odin stock.
The phone doesnt boot at all? What the hell did they sell it for if it wont boot?
If you can I would just send it back to the seller who sent this brick to you. I would also go through PayPal and open a case in the resolution center. At least they would help you get a refund and arrange ship back to seller.

I twas one of those ebay wholesale stores. They probably know very little about the phone, but claimed it was in 100% working condition, so i'll hold them to their word and request another phone or a refund.
I went through paypal and have experience filing claims, but I always try to allow the seller to resolve the issue first to avoid negative feedback.

While that is a nice gesture, if I can't do it, I feel like I would be letting this ebay store off the hook for selling a non-working device.
Good luck! Hope it gets sorted out for you.
Ive had this phone since the day it came out, and since then its been dropped several times. My phone is rooted and now my usb crapped out on me.
It does not charge properly(very slow charging) on top of that when i connect it to a computer it will not recognize it at all. I know its not the wire either cause i tried with a different phone and a different computer, my phone wasnt being recognized as a mass storage.
I took it back to tmobile and a new phone is sopposed to come in but, im scared about the warranty being voided because my phone is rooted. I tried making it as stock as i could by flashing a stock rom. But that actually kinda made things worse cause now i dont have cwr , no root, and no usb so i cant use download mode to odin flash. My phone still has darkside's kernel on it too and i tried looking for a stock kernel and theyre all for odin.
So i guess when it comes right down to it, is there a way to get a stock kernel on my phone? I really dont want them coming back to me and saying the warranty is voided cause its rooted :/ is there anything i can do?

Actually ..the worst they can do is keep your phone for a month and a half, call you and tell you its ready, make you go pick it up only to find out it hasn't been fixed because it was damaged by liquid (even thought all stickers are 100% clean).
Yes indeed.. this is indeed what Telus did to me.
In any case, I called Samsung and they took care of the problem for me. Turned out to be a defective USB jack that they just replaced, and they ignored my CM7 install (although they did seem to reflash it back to stock for some reason)... They did not find 'water' damage so the repair was done under warranty.
I don't know about TMo but Telus tends to drop the ball in these kind of situations.

Hey guys,
I've been having issues for the past month or so with random reboots while using the phone followed by boot loops requiring a battery pull to get it to work again. At first I thought it was a software issue, so I returned to stock, which didn't help, and then installed a few other roms. I'm 99% sure it is a hardware failure, as now the phone is completely dead. It was fine when I went to bed, and in the morning it showed no signs of power (or heat). I tried 2 different batteries and 3 chargers, so I'm pretty sure it's toast. It does not show up in the device manager so I can't odin or KIES recover to stock, or do anything else with it for that matter. Download mode doesn't work, and the phone is literally a useless hunk of plastic.
Having said that, I am getting a replacement phone. What I'm concerned about is if the storage on the phone will be examined upon receipt by either T-Mo or Samsung. I was using CM10 when it went dark, however because it was working (with the random reboots still) the night before I'm pretty sure it's not a flashing issue (as it worked fine after the flash, well as fine as a phone does that randomly reboots).
Do they have the capability to remove the storage from the phone and check it against something else? Is there a way to wipe it without being able to odin/power it on?
Am I over thinking this? Will they just send it back to samsung who will test the power, then pitch the phone?
Is there anything else I should try to do to fix it?
Thanks for your time.
You could by a USB download mode jig for like $5 to see if it can get you into download mode. I wouldn't worry about the storage too much.
If it's completely bricked (like can't even get the bootloader to pick up), not charging, and still under warranty, odds are they will just replace it without wasting too much time on it.
Would the download jig do anything better than just plugging it into the computer with the buttons down? I didn't flash a bad kernel or anything like that (as in it booted and rebooted a few times without new issues) and it was a sgh-t989 kernel (which I used the buttons to get into recovery with).
I do have the replacement on the way, as it's my work phone too so I really need it next week. If the general consensus is not to worry about it I may just leave it. The water indicator isn't pink so I'm in good shape, and if they see it's bad and it's not worth the time to repair I doubt they would audit it/do additional tests.
Also, on the plus side I had 1 tiny microscratch in the year I've had the phone and it would fill with finger oils (really only obnoxious on white backgrounds). Here's to a scratch free screen!

Are you sure your phone does not charge or it just doesn't simply turn on? Try testing your battery, maybe if a friend has a similar GS2 you can try your battery with his to see if it still works. The try the USB Jig mentioned above to get in to download mode if you haven't done so yet.
Depending on when you got your phone and if you have the original receipt you can try contacting Samsung and get a RMA code to send the phone to a be fixed at a support center. Your last option would be to sell the phone for parts if it's still in any good condition. Good luck!

Since you seem like the type who likes to mess around with things, you can try making a USB jig on your own. This site has great instructions on how to do so. If you have a USB cable which I'm sure you do and go to your closest electronics store you can find some resistors. Hopefully that will help you out before you go ahead with buying the Note 2, GS4 or whatever the next expensive flagship phone is, lol. Good luck!

Yeah per my original post I couldn't get into download mode, and the failure wasn't caused by an improper kernel flash.
I got the replacement through T-Mobile today, and sent the old out.
I was in a car wreck on Tuesday and my friend and I wound up in the ditch with 7 feet of water, my phone of course died, I tried drying it in rice for a day still had boot loops, took it apart hosed down the mobo and other electronic parts with electronic contact cleaner dried it off, flashed every recovery I could think of even looked on other device forums to try and find an answer... nothing fixes the boot loop or the inability to access recovery as it re-boots. Anything i'm missing here or is my device hopelessly fried?

That really sounds like it's fried; though it's odd that you can still enter download mode and use Odin. Have you tried returning to 100% stock... flashing a stock tar? I doubt that would help, but it's worth a shot since you can still use Odin...

OP says he's able to use Odin and has flashed different recoveries... Why though, would Odin be accessible but nothing else?

^This. Phone is low on the priority list when talking about your life.
But,...what about your car insurance? Can you claim it under it?
Good Replies

I can access Odin and it will pass all the files I give it, but can't seem to get any further.

This is what I'm wondering myself I did pass all files through successfully, the only thing I couldn't get to pass was a pit file for re-partition since I couldn't find one for our T-Mobile Galaxy S4 I did get stock though and what not.

Thank you for the blessings, I am okay it seems after doing multiple 360s after hydroplaning the water seems to have absorbed all the impact and we just had sore neck muscles etc.

I think I can but I don't know how the process works I was told Home owner insurance might cover it under flood protection but I am still waiting on my claim to be processed by progressive.
Thank you for every-bodies inquiry into the weirdness that Odin is still working solid but nothing else, at this point I am just curious what I can do to the device as I am missing a car and feel the boredom seeping in.
Did you try Kies Firmware Emergency Recovery?

Yes I did and it said that it was successful but the phone still boot loops maybe this is a mositure issue where I have to wait for 1 week in a rice bag or something or one of the hardware components fried I honestly don't understand water damage.

You might be able to include the phone replacement cost on any car insurance claim from the accident. It depends on the coverage, but it cant hurt to ask

Home owners will not cover you on this one as it involved a wreck in an automobile. Car insurance will do the job. Get well soon and who knows, you may be eligible for the s4 advanced edition.
