Why did my Galaxy Nexus brick itself? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have been using my fine since release from Verizon. Most of the time on 4.0.4 deodexed stock w/ FrancoKernel Milestone 4 and Radio I515.09 V.FA02 / I515.FA02.
Phone is in great condition. It was not overheating at the time of shut down.
Randomly the screen went dark with a bunch of lines (acting like it was dying).
It stayed on that frozen line screen until I pulled the battery.
It restarted with the Google logo and just sat there.
Pulled again. Now phone does not charge or turn on trying 3 different batteries.
Took battery and sim out for 10 minutes and still nothing.
I didn't mess with voltage or overclock or anything like that.
---
Should I send it in for warranty claim? I'm afraid they will get it working and see my rooted phone with private information and a ROM that allows tethering.

Did you attempt to restore to stock and see if it persists?

Yeah if it doesn't turn on no matter what you've tried, it's most likely an unrecoverable brick. I've had it happen to me on an HTC phone randomly and it sucked. Aside from what you've already tried, I'd say maybe leave the battery in, plug the phone into the charger and wait for a bit and see if anything happens. Other than that you're SOL.
I also highly doubt that Verizon will be able to coax the phone back to life if it's a hardware fault.

damn. thanks.

I had a Bionic do that, it seemed like it just shorted out one night. I went to a Verizon store and tried different batteries and such in it with no luck. Probably just a hardware defect of some sort.

Mine did the same just the other day. Same exact way you described it for me. I tried to revive it using ODIN and OMAP Flash but it gets stuck at writing to the NAND then fails. I actually searched the forum and it seems to have happened quite a lot. I'm guessing its a hardware defect that some of the Nexus have just like how it was on the first batch of Galaxy S i9000M phones. (I know because mine corrupted twice and Samsung refused to fix it the second time.) Some threads and even Chainfire's Nexus killed itself it seems:

With that said, there might be one last thing you can do which is the OMAP flash JTAG via USB if you haven't tried it yet:
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f63...-i9100g-via-usb-cable-freeeeeeeeeeee-1465412/
This will try to flash a bootloader for you where in you can access fastboot, etc. If you can access Download Mode, you can try to use ODIN to bring it back as well.
If ODIN or OMAP Flash fails to write to the NAND then its hardware issue and needs to be replaced. Hope you have warranty still.

Thanks Dawg. Nothing worked.
VZW tech support didn't even ask one question and sent me a new phone which arrives today. It must be common.
Loved my phone setup too.
I have to start backing everything up to my PC. I had a feeling not having an SD card would burn me.

[Q] HELP! Bricked!

I just bricked my rooted T989. Nothing happens when I hit power (no display) and my PC does not show the drives when I connect via USB. I have tried vol buttons + power (with battery and [no battery + cable]). Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should try next? Is TMO likely to replace/repair my phone even though it had been rooted?
Have you tried getting into download mode? And what caused the brick?

This is really embarassing but I somehow stumbled up WickedRom, which is for the I9100, somehow thought it was for T989, and tried to flash it. Obviously a major league screw up. I have requested a replacement from TMO. I just hope they don't hit me with a major financial penalty if Samsung notices that it has been rooted (it was rooted when I tried flashing WickedRom).

Same thing happened here... I was odining back to stock and the power in my office at work went out... total fail. All Black, no power button, battery pull or Jig will make the phone do anything... anyone find a work around for this... hey i know im new here but i got the answer... u need 2 odin back 2 stock 4 download mode pull battery plug usb into computer then 2 phone hold vol up and trackpad then insert battery and u will be in download mode also if using CWM dont fix permissions and also dont forget 2 place unzipped recovery file in /system/bin folder and overwrite it over existing file also make sure that cache, data, sdcard ,and system are all unmounted in mounts option of recovery took me 3 days of flashin back 2 stock with odin and soft bricking my phone 2 figure this out hope it helps

Damn that sounds bad, big mistake on your part though, differentiating between i9100 and T-989 is key, among the other models too.
Mine did the same thing after doing a backup. I'm in the 30 day grace period and I'm gonna try to take it back in.. Hopefully I get away with it unless I find a way to fix it

Only way is to send it to Samsung or get it JTAG. JTAG will probably be cheaper.

Phone Wont turn on :(

So I updated my phone from CM10.1.0 to CM10.1.2 today. I used the updating feature found in settings.
Everything seemed to go well, the rom updated, phone rebooted, and 140 or so apps updated. Got to home screen and everything works fine. About 5 mins later the phone shuts down. I turn my phone on again, 1 app updates, and I get the home screen. I checked my email and such and put my phone in my pocket. About 5 mins later I notice my phone has turned off again, cept this time now it won't come back on :/
I've searched google and some people point to the battery being the culprit.
http://www.sebertech.com/2013/03/sam...-problems.html Issue #16
and
http://forums.androidcentral.com/spr...turn-help.html
Both say to remove battery, plug the phone in, watch for the charging light to come on, then reinsert the battery. This doesnt work either.
If I take my battery out and plug in the charger, the charging light does come on. If I hold the power button down in this state after a few seconds the light will turn off until I release the power button. With the light on and after reinserting the battery the light goes back out after a few seconds. I just went and got a new battery, but thats not working either :/ I havent been able to boot into recovery mode or download mode.
If the update bricked my phone would it turn on and work just fine before dying? I used a data connection just fine after the update.
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
0.e pages not found, derp.
The rom shouldn't be an issue at all because CMTeam... Why would they do such a thing.
When you updated from 1.0 to 1.2 did you:
Wipe Dalvik Cache and Cache before you updated.
reset permissions via Custom Recovery after update?
I saw a few people with S3's that went through exactly the same problem but it turns out the phone's main-board was fried because of a corrupted NAND right after a flash.
If there's no haptic feedback or led when you try to turn on the phone ( With a battery ), it's a possible brick but its not super-bricked.
If you put a usb / charger on the phone with no battery in it and it indicates a red LED. There is a possible 50/50 you can restore it but
it'll cost around some 40-60 bucks for having it JTAGGED.
If there is no LED when the phone's plugged to a charger wall port / USB via computer with no battery.
It is completely dead and you'd wanna send that in to get a brand new phone.
It just looks like you need it JTAG Repaired.
Hopefully others would have a better and possible way of finding what happened. Because mines would be a last resort
type of thing and its the only thing I know when the SIII Bricks after completely doing a clean flash or if the phone ends up dying
for no reason after a flash.

You claim it booted up after the flash and everything worked, so it can't be that you flashed a cm rom for a different device. It doesn't even attempt the boot splash?
Have you tried putting the battery in and plugging the charger for several hours? Could just be a bad usb port and or bad charger cable and your device simply is out of power. Find a different cable or charger all together and try see if anyone has a similar phone that you can try their battery in your phone.

Yeh, the fact that it started fine twice is what is baffling me. Though it did turn itself off after a few mins both times.
Yeh, I plugged the charger in overnight last night just in case. I took it to the sprint store where the guy took out my battery and tested it, he said it was bad and that was the issue. As of now I've tried 4 different batteries. My own, a new one I bought and fully charged and 2 borrowed from people at work.
That's really weird.... And none of the led come on at all? Really weird, it's not a brick issue because it would give some symptoms but it's like it's not getting power at all. It could just be a major hardware failure. The power button is defective on the S3 but it usually makes an attempt to turn on.

I've posted in the CM10.1 thread, I'm not sure if Ive heard anything from anyone on the CM team though. I guess it's possible they messed something up, but I havent seen anyone else with this issue and CM, so I'm guessing the issue is on my end.
I would let the phone sit on the charger and try to boot into recovery and try to flash a tw rom. If you haven't tried that already its worth a shot.

Oh yeah forget it. It's not a power issue it's bricked. That's exactly what they say when they are bricked by flashing international roms. Jtag is your only option.

the battery is fine i have tried another battery but it didnt work
Not so long ago i tried to be the boss and took another guy's i9000 to install CM10 for him, i nailed it, it installed and it was working perfectly fine, then after several reboots the phone got stuck in a bootloop, then it got stuck in recovery, then it got stuck on the samsung logo, and then it just died.(stopped charging) like having literally a brick in your hand, no response.
If you've done alot of mods to the phone I'm guessing something inside died, get your phone to warranty and say you cant turn it on, they'll just change the motherboard and give you the phone back, if you had any custom roms they will never know.
my phone has no warranty that i could claim so my only option is to somehow fix my gnex

Well as i said, you have probably damaged physically some component on the motherboard, it needs to be changed so you can't fix it, find a Service that fixes android devices and tell em it doesn't boot nor makes a reaction at all, they'll prolly say they will change the motherboard if they have one and thats it.
*Edit*
I remember there was a thing called "jtag" that was able to debrick devices broken in such ways. But Rarely do services have them.
Try fastboot, download mode or omap

[Q] Odd brick situation Tmobile SGH-T999 (Cant find exact answer)

Hey everybody,
I rooted my phone a couple weeks ago and one day it just pooped out. I researched a bunch on google etc and found some things to try but so far no solutions.
Model: SGH-T999 T-mobile s3 (Used CF-Auto-Root and Odin for rooting)
Problem: After the phone pooped out, I was unable to enter recovery mode. I could enter dl mode however it crashes at variable intervals. So I bought a jig figuring maybe that would help but it still crashes in dl about 5 seconds later. Any suggestions?
Everything that I have found on the internet has been were people can usually get it into dl mode and keep it there or they cant get there at all even with a jig. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
If you were running stock it's probably a hardware problem. If not what Rom are you on? What/when/how was your most recent flashes?

It starts and then crashes. After awhile it might make it to the animation with the blue wave forming around the words samsung, but usually it crashes on the Samsung Galaxy SIII logo in the beginning. Also when I put it into download mode it crashes anywhere from 1-5 seconds after. When I try to get into recovery mode it crashes almost right away when the blue words are at the top left of the screen.
Also when I put the battery in it tries to boot on its own without me pressing power button, and sometimes it tries to reboot after it crashes and turns off without me pressing anything. Also after it crashes I usually cannot just press the power button to try and power it up again so I have to take the battery out and put it back in.
When I was doing the Kasperd brick fix I used the T999 debrick image. How do I know if I have a different variant of the T999. I saw that some people had T999v and T999N. What are those?
Look under the battery for your model. Sounds like a power button issue. All I can say is try fiddling with it a bit. May have to open to see if it is physically always in contact, or it could be a deeper issue on the board. Hard to say.

Ok I just see T999 on the label.
How can it be a hardware issue when I never dropped the phone or anything. I was just thinking it was because I rooted the phone because it happened about a week after I rooted it. It was working one minute and then a couple hours later when I took it out of my pocket it was off and I tried turning it on and all that stuff started happening. I will definitely check the power button though. Thanks for the help.
Also another piece of info to add. When I plug it in to charge both the battery charging symbol and red light will sometimes turn on and then it crashes/goes black similar to what happens when trying to power up the phone. Not sure if that helps at all. Thanks!
If my phone was hard bricked I wouldnt be able to turn it on at all correct? Im trying to figure out if I will need to get this thing jtagged or something in order to get it working again.

True, however I just find it odd that I rooted the phone and a week later it happened. That is why I am leading towards an issue involving that and not hardware damage.
If it was a problem with rooting, it would have gone south right away. Many people are having these button issues recently. And you don't have to drop it, like aerowinder said, but you do use the button right? Moving parts wear out. Hardware fails. That's really all there is to it. While I could be wrong in my diagnosis, I don't think that will prove to be the case here.

Thanks guys! I found a good thread on here about the S3 sudden death thread. Im going to read up on that and see what I can do. Hopefully I will be able to get everything back in working order.

SOLVED: HELP NEEDED!!! Note 2 wont turn on. BadgeProvider and Samsung has stopped!!!!

As the title reads my Note 2 will not turn on. It will not go into recovery mode. I have 5 batteries and none of them are working. Yesterday I got 2 weird messages that "BadgeProvider" and "Samsung" has stopped. The phone started acting weird by not letting me use anything but the notification bar. I couldn't even turn it off using the power button. I removed the battery and reinserted the battery a couple of times and still it didn't work only letting me use the notification bar. Finally it started working for some random reason and I restarted the phone and all was well.
I'm so use to having 5 batteries that I did not have the phone on the charger last night and it died. Now the phone will not turn on at all. Not into recovery mode. Not normal mode. It is totally unresponsive. Tried rapidly touching the contacts with the battery contact and nothing. What can I do to get my phone working????????????
Also to add to this, yesterday when I was taking the phone's battery out and in the phone would start booting by itself. Could this be a power button issue? I've only had the phone for about 10 months and never dropped it without the otterbox defender series on it.

From that statement above, having the otter box doesn't mean you'll be protected against drops. Yes it'll protect the phone but still suffered inside the device! I had a friend crack his screen on the corner, with an otter box on with one drop!
Now back to the phone:
Since you can get into recovery have you tried a factory data reset to see if that fixes your problem..

I plan to read all responses as soon as I can because I'm in dire need of help. The phone WILL NOT turn back on. The first day I had the problem it gave me the "BadgeProvider" has stopped working and also the "Samsung" has stopped working error messages. The only thing that was responsive was responsive was my notification bar. I could slide it down turn wifi on and off etc from there but when I hit the setting button on the notification bar it would not open up the settings immediately and there was maybe a 2 minute delay (I walked away from the phone and came back to it) and it would finally open it up but giving me the 2 error messages "BadgeProvider" and "Samsung" has stopped working. Read online that clearing the BadgeProvider data under "Application Manager->All->BadgeProvider" would fix this issue so thats what I did. Wallah it worked fine.....fell asleep without my phone on the charger and it died but I have 5 batteries so who cares. Woke up noticed the phone was dead then I swapped batteries (OEM Samsung battery). Tried to turn it on and it will not turn on. Tried putting it on the charger (even though it should be a freshly charged battery) and the red charging light will not even come on. Tried to boot into recovery mode and still unresponsive.
As of now I CANNOT boot into revovery mode, turn on the phone in any way, get the charging light to come on when plugged in (I have 5 other batteries plus an external battery charger so its definitely not truely dead battery wise), I cannot get the phone to do anything what so ever. Tried removing external storage from it, tried removing sim, tried 5 different fully charged batteries and nothing.
Anyone that can give me some insight on what the problem may be and a possible solution I would greatly appreciate it.

True, true.....Or, they post the same question in five forums....lol.
What do you guys think about using Odin? Can he get into the phone if it won't go to recovery? Can you install TWRP or CWM, they may automatically set the phone to restart in recovery mode? Just some thoughts....I am not a dev., just an avid user.
Something here might help as well. :

Keep us posted on what you try, and your status. Good luck.
Also if it helps any, I have had my phone restart by itself randomly way before rooting it. After rooting I still had the restarts just as I have always had (maybe once every 3 weeks). Rooting it gave me no errors at all and it has been working fine for months being rooted. Not sure if letting you guys know of the restarting issue is going to help anything but I'm telling you all I know to try to debug this issue.

So there is no power at all, not even a loop. I had a similar problem with a LePan tab, but when I plugged it into my laptop via USB, it would start.....Sorry. Sounds hardware....
Good luck

I did read the whole post, hence my reply. Towards the end of his post, he says that the phone won't turn on at all. Maybe you should read the whole post.

Thanks man. I'm thinking it's hardware too. Herd of motherboard problems early on with this phone that would cause it to randomly shut off and not come back on.
Has ANYONE had any experience with samsung repair centers???? Do they care if the device is rooted even if its a known hardware issue?
Thanks for any help

I've read a few people having that problem with the phone randomly turning off.
[Q] did you get the phone New or used? If its used you have a lot of people out there selling devices with problems that they couldn't fix! FYI
#2
Does it get recognized by the PC?
When you plug it in? If so then you should be able to try the Kies recovery!
If not then kies won't help..

I brought it directly from AT&T new. And nope. Tried pluggin it into the PC and not recognized. Tried Kies and Odin and neither had any affect. The phone is just completely unresponsive now.
Thinking about trying to take it to Samsung before AT&T so I can try to miss the deductible.
Remove the battery ...then plug the device in to USB connection with your PC...
Then attempt to boot the phone into download mode..
If successful ....then immediately push the rooted stock rom from Mr. Robinsons thread in the development section...
If no download mode exists while attempting boot with the battery removed ...then the likelihood of device damage is high...
This of course does not rule out the possibility of a stuck power button ...but that hardware failure generally presents a repeated and uncontrolled loop which in this case we are not seeing...
Odin mode failure generally means a defective or damaged Chipset...g

Ok since you want to take it in to Sammy. And you did state you got it New from the AT&T store. Then you can take it into one of the DSC. (Device support center)
Check HERE:
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB91429&cv=820#fbid=CS_QLPeF54-
Hopefully there's one in your area. I have one like 10 mins away from me
Hopefully they can help you get back up and running. No charge either. It's a warranty center. Member no Rom talk in there.. LOL:sly:
But if they can't get it to turn on you'll be getting another the same day. Takes about a total of 15 minutes and you'll be on your way with your new toy!! Yay and good luck to you. Lety us know what you're outcome is!

Got a new phone. It was a painless process. Just walk in play dumb and talk as least as possible. They never asked a question about rooting. I'm guessing because I seemed like an idiot . Going to let it do all the updates it can then going to root it tomorrow using CFroot.
Thanks all for the info.
Anyone reading this in the future let me know if I can help in anyway.
Glad you got a new device ..and for the record ...I personally believe you had a bad device from day 1...
Normally I would frown on anyone taking back a device that has been modded ...but I can see no evidence in your case that indicates your doing anything that would break your chipset ...
And I know that others feel the same way ...
You tried your guts out ...and the device just didn't act properly from day 1...
Please place a "Solved" in the thread title if you don't mind ...
That way ...everyone knows the issue has been corrected ..
Many thanks ...and....
Happy flashing ....g
