Different antennas on the phone, so no, no hack can change your hardware.
:banghead:
Did you read about your phone before you bought it? No where does it say this phone can get wimax.
And that's be because it's impossible.

For a this phone out of the box yes it's impossible. Not only would you need the nonexistent hardware but also the nonexistent software to run the the nonexistent hardware.

For example there is a hack to get LTE to run on Nexus 4 http://techcrunch.com/2012/11/23/how-to-enable-4g-lte-on-the-google-nexus-4/

Yes, but that's not going to happen with the GSIII; as wimax is completely depricated and not compatible with LTE. So in short: you will not have wimax running pn any GSIII variant.

That hack was only possible because of the lte chip and the quad band radio
And as far as i know it only works on a Canadian carrier telus

The Nexus 4 has a LTE chip, the S3 does not have a WiMAX chip so it is not and will not be possible.
Only two possible options:
- Don't buy the S3 until LTE gets to your area,
- Buy the S3 but also keep the Evo, use it as a WiFi hotspot for your S3.

That's not a hack. That's how you turn on 4g LTE on a T-Mo Nexus 4. We have the same settings for when Sprint activates LTE in your area...
the answer to your question is no its not possible. not only does the galaxy s3 not have the antennas to support wimax but there are also no radios available to flash to get it to work. most website advertise that lte phones on sprint will only be able to use 3g until lte arrives and if someone told you different, they obviously did not know what they were talking about. sorry but its literally not possible. you can ask a million different website and word your question a million different ways but it will not work.

The nexus 4 came shipped with an LTE radio, the words LONG TERM EVOLUTION pretty much explains why new phones ship with an LTE radio. WiMAX however is old technology already, and a waste of space, battery & money to manufacture that radio. WiMAX is its own tx/rx chip not built inside like snapdragons s4 SOC LTE

WiMax is dead. One of the slides says they will use WiMax through 2012. From what I can tell our phones are useless /w LTE. The upside is LTE won't even begin deployment until mid 2012. I am guessing 2013 before we see major LTE rollout AKA we will be near new phones by then.

WiMAX devices will be sold through 2012; LTE rollout will begin in major markets in 2012, with devices coming at the same time. WiMAX isn't going anywhere for a while.
Multi-tech chipsets are going to be a priority.
i still like wimax better
I would be worried about the wimax lte issue but i rarely use sprint network for data unless i absolutely have to. Im consistently on wifi. It would be nice to have lte but it really isn't a necessity.

This is going to be ugly! I can see now our speeds are really about to head back down hill... they are not saying anything about how they will handle all the new iphone customers. Seems they are betting all this on the FCC approving their 800 spectrum with lightsquared, and from my understanding the government is still not sure it would not cause problems with gps so that's not any time soon!

Obviously it's disappointing for all of us who just signed a two year contract on a phone that will be basically obsolete in 6 months when LTE rolls out.
However you can't live your life always holding out for the next big thing.
Wimax 4g works well for me in most of the areas I frequent and will continue to work in those places for the duration of my contract.
Even 3g speeds aren't that bad. And I have true unlimited, I'm wifi tethering, etc. etc. so, look at the bright side. I figure when I become eligible for a new phone the new LTE network will be ready for prime time.

I've spent time traveling around the Kansas City, KS metro area, and it seems most places are lit up now, especially in Olathe. Average speeds are a little disappointing considering these towers should have very little load. I've done approximately 350 speed tests so far.
I'm getting a consistant average of 10mbps down/up around the entire metro, with highs of 13mbps down/up and lows of 8mbps down/up during the day. Late at night speeds are 15mbps down/up around the metro for me. In my basement I only get about 6-7mbps down/up (with 0-1 bars) no matter the time of day.
The latency is outstanding! I've had pings as low as 42ms. The highest I have seen is 70ms, and the average is about 55ms. Great for remote desktop and video chat
I'll keep this updated with my findings. Highest test I have pulled so far has been 20 down/15 up.
Don't think so. Not here in Dallas yet.

Because they're broke, losing customers, and that's all they have to try to get people to stay. If they start improving and rolling out this LTE network widely and (gasp) maybe gain customers, they'll cut unlimited data just like AT&T and Verizon.

Well, a lot of folks use apps that show a concurrent connection to a Sprint CDMA tower while their Sprint phone is showing LTE 4G. So maybe it is a concurrent EVDO connection. The point is that there can be two connections at the same time.
I really don't believe there is any LTE roaming to Verizon or anyone else.

It's all about the wording. T-mobile will say they have the fastest 4G network (HSPA+) which is true. And in AT&T commercials they claim to have the largest 4G network..which is also true. Neither carrier even touches on LTE when talking about largest or fastest, because they can't compete there.
Verizon is fastest i think

On what device? You need to compare same device, otherwise its pointless.
Allow me to explain. Android uses buffers for the network in the initramfs. Manufacturers like to tweak these. You can essentially trick a speedtest into reporting over 100Mbps down. This is how the Thunderbolt was pulling 60+ with LTE at times.
Speedtests are fun but fall under the same trap as most benchmarks, and are really not indicative of true performance.

OK..i too can pull super fast speeds as well on my vzw nexus. My question however is how do the other networks claim they are the fastest? We have all seen and heard the commercials. I know all about marketing and what not. Are they just lying? Or is there something I'm missing?

If you look at the commercials T-Mobile claims there android phones are faster than every other companies iPhone which would be true seeing how the iPhone is only 3g. Hands down Verizon is the fastest in my eyes. I don't mind paying the price for the speeds. Check out my signature that was the fastest I got but stopped testing because I realized I used over 500 mb of data doing speed tests alone
Accidentally thanked you but it wouldn't hurt ehh? But in his sig. it does say Galaxy Nexus.

Hi guys
I have the LTE version of the phone, and I am just wondering if there is any way to disable these two modes? I realise that they are both faster than traditional HSDPA but I'm finding that the connection is quite patchy in certain places when using this, and when used with my HTC One S (which is normal HSDPA), the signal is much more consistent and, for instance, I can watch TV on it without and freezes.
Is there a quick way to toggle this when need be?
Thanks

Cheers
But that doesn't give me the option to keeo 3G but disable the likes of DC-HSDPA.

just set your phone on WCDMA mode only that's 3G only or GSM/WCDMA is also better as not all places will have constant 3G

That still uses DC and H+ though. Also, my network does not have 2G so I need to keep it on 3G all the time anyway.
well I'm not very familiar with 4G encoding techniques but I know there are very similar to WCDMA apart from the larger bandwidth in their frequency band. yes H+ is 3G and HSDPA is 3G abit slower than H+ however I'm not sure about DC-HSDPA probably could be related to 4G ...I'm not really sure..maybe if I ask you when running only on WCDMA (3G) does the DC-HSDPA show up as well??

But I have done all this and there is no way to just disable DC or H+ within the mobile network settings.
It requires another method.

have you tried maybe another operators SIM card which supports 4G? or a different SIM card from the same operator? so you narrow down the issue to only your handset?

Only one network supports 4G in the UK atm, and no one I know has it. Mine will upgrade to 4G at no extra cost in a couple months or so and this might help the stability of my Internet.
It's definately not an issue with my sim card though. The problem is the phone ramping up to DC when it can maintain a more stable connection on H+.

EDIT: THIS POST IS WRONG
There's no way to do this, no.
How can you tell it's switching to DC? There's no easy way I know of to tell, H+ doesn't necessarily mean DC either.
I've a N7105 as well, the only way I know if a cell is capable of DC is looking at one of the radio debug screens, which get to with *#0011#

My radio displays DC when connected to it.

Well, there you go, I've learnt something new, thanks.
My discussions with a number of technical people who work at my carrier (I'm in New Zealand) led me to believe this isn't supported. I'm wondering now if it actually is supported but disabled in the ROM my carrier issues.
Out of interest, are you using a stock ROM?
Thanks for sharing though, I've updated my original post.

Hello
Yep it's stock. One of the recent French onew ending DMG1. This is the first time it displays DC, which I think is due to the radio this uses. With all my previous roms I never got this even though I was definately connected to DC.
