WiMax is dead. One of the slides says they will use WiMax through 2012. From what I can tell our phones are useless /w LTE. The upside is LTE won't even begin deployment until mid 2012. I am guessing 2013 before we see major LTE rollout AKA we will be near new phones by then.

WiMAX devices will be sold through 2012; LTE rollout will begin in major markets in 2012, with devices coming at the same time. WiMAX isn't going anywhere for a while.
Multi-tech chipsets are going to be a priority.

i still like wimax better

I would be worried about the wimax lte issue but i rarely use sprint network for data unless i absolutely have to. Im consistently on wifi. It would be nice to have lte but it really isn't a necessity.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

This is going to be ugly! I can see now our speeds are really about to head back down hill... they are not saying anything about how they will handle all the new iphone customers. Seems they are betting all this on the FCC approving their 800 spectrum with lightsquared, and from my understanding the government is still not sure it would not cause problems with gps so that's not any time soon!

Obviously it's disappointing for all of us who just signed a two year contract on a phone that will be basically obsolete in 6 months when LTE rolls out.
However you can't live your life always holding out for the next big thing.
Wimax 4g works well for me in most of the areas I frequent and will continue to work in those places for the duration of my contract.
Even 3g speeds aren't that bad. And I have true unlimited, I'm wifi tethering, etc. etc. so, look at the bright side. I figure when I become eligible for a new phone the new LTE network will be ready for prime time.

Exactly!! Even if we were to get an lte handset when they come out in about 6 months the lte network would still be in its infancy and we wouldn't get the coverage we have with wimax.

Sprint [NOT] ending unlimited data [for smartphones only]

Just read on android and me.

Well Im leaving sprint. Only reason i put up with the awful speeds was because of the unlimited data.

Most I used was 5 1/2 gigs a months and that was before I had wifi in my house, I was downloading ROMs to my phone over 3g and streaming music all day at work.
Old news. But it will only be a matter of time till there go to the verizon/att type plans
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Very misleading title and article. For those that like to skim and call that reading, it would be hard to not come away thinking that sprint is now no different than any other wireless company.
Article author has spite for Sprint, for whatever reason, otherwise he wouldn't write in such a negative tone. That or author is just trying to be sensationalistic in order to grab more attention.

"Oh, I'm leaving sprint, I'm going to Verizon"?
You have unlimited data plan with sprint now and you want to switch to teered plan with Verizon?
All I have to say is this:
Sprint is the last carrier with true unlimited data, get on a plan NOW before they get rid of it. Otherwise for new subscribers it will be as it is with other carriers now.
I wonder if that means sprint will be bringing down the hammer on illegal tethering like att has oooo **** haha

Idk how to feel about this i know sprint has came out and said they wont get rid of their unlimited data for phones and i dont think they will cuz they know it is the ONLY reason people **** with them i admit they been cutting costs in other depts like the premier program and raising the etf to compisate for the data... idk i wanna hold out and see if sprints network vision plan pulls through and if it does it will be great

I've spent time traveling around the Kansas City, KS metro area, and it seems most places are lit up now, especially in Olathe. Average speeds are a little disappointing considering these towers should have very little load. I've done approximately 350 speed tests so far.
I'm getting a consistant average of 10mbps down/up around the entire metro, with highs of 13mbps down/up and lows of 8mbps down/up during the day. Late at night speeds are 15mbps down/up around the metro for me. In my basement I only get about 6-7mbps down/up (with 0-1 bars) no matter the time of day.
The latency is outstanding! I've had pings as low as 42ms. The highest I have seen is 70ms, and the average is about 55ms. Great for remote desktop and video chat
I'll keep this updated with my findings. Highest test I have pulled so far has been 20 down/15 up.
Don't think so. Not here in Dallas yet.

Because they're broke, losing customers, and that's all they have to try to get people to stay. If they start improving and rolling out this LTE network widely and (gasp) maybe gain customers, they'll cut unlimited data just like AT&T and Verizon.

There's no money in that compared to running postpaid services. And they sell wholesale service to Ting already. Why would they turn themselves into a prepaid carrier? Think Sprint would go out of business before they did that.

By default on Sprint phones the bars only indicate VOICE coverage. They have nothing to do with 3G EVDO or 4G LTE reception. I have aseen a few custom ROMs that split the bars into two for voice and data, but the regular software doesn't make this distinction.
There is a chance you could be connected to one tower for voice but evdo is down on it so you are using a different tower for data, and an even higher likelihood with LTE since most towers haven't been upgraded yet.
Top one is from this evening in New Braunfels. Nice.

Not sure if you read any comments on that page but if Google were to buyout any carrier it would probably be best to buy T-Mobile like some of the comments there are saying.
AT&T could not buy them out because they already have so many different companies under their belt. Why not Google? G-Mobile would be a brilliant idea!

Only bad thing I see is dish networks involvement. I have them for TV and they suck! They drop channels over petty BS which with a phone provider would be crappy if they decide "oh we don't wanna support so and so any longer even tho our customers really enjoy it and use it daily" >_<
Their AMC dispute really irked me when their big mouth CEO went around claiming he knew what his customers liked. "Our customer base is mostly rural families not the kind of degenerate low life's that watch TV shows about nazi drug dealers and zombies in new York" obviously you don't watch breaking bad or the walking dead, since breaking bad has nothing to do with nazis other than Walt's alias is Heisenberg and the walking dead takes place in GA which is a long way from new York. If there were any other options out here besides directripoff or dish I woulda switched providers in a half a heartbeat. I think Google would be best to partner with someone already in the business, either a larger provider like sprint or a smaller one like metropcs or straight talk and use their existing infrastructure as a jump off point instead of building a new network with a satellite TV provider that can't even keep their TV up in a storm, and their HD lags and digitizes/buffers atleast 2x and hr, makes me wanna throw my remote at my TV cuz it always lags right at the best part of the show :banghead:

Google + Dish = Bad

T-Mobile and Dish sucks big time in PR at least in the towns around me. :banghead:
But if that happen (doubtfully) by that time I will be living in T-Mobile coverage.

When i had dish and dtv the customer service was the worst. At least Sprint acts like they give a ****, even when they dont
So if they bought T mobile, would that mean they would be buying metro since they merged?

My guess would be their high-speed satellite internet band which I believe is In the 1500mhz area but I'm not 100% sure that's right. I need to check the FCC info pages for what spectrum they currently hold.

AWS-4 spectrum is quite varied. But the Dish S-band satellite spectrum that has been re-classified as AWS-4 spectrum is currently 2000-2020 MHz x 2180-2200 MHz.
