[Q] Note 2 and Yahoo email - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been a bberry user my whole life. With the writing seemingly on the wall for bberry, Note 2 seemed like the ideal device for me -- I quite like its size, I feel that helps mitigate the loss of the physical keyboard. But I primarily use Yahoo! email and I was in for a shock when I made the switch.
It appears that there is (i) no way to push Yahoo email to the basic mail app in Android and (ii) the new Android operating system sets the shortest sync time at an agonizing 15 minutes (compared to what I believe is 5 in prior versions). After many ring around the rosy calls, with some tech people saying "well the emails should still arrive on their own relatively quickly" it seems like it has now been confirmed that it only will sync every 15 minutes (sometimes not even that if device is idling), unless I force the sync. I want a smartphone that tells ME when I have mail, not the other way around.
I've downloaded the Yahoo mail app for Android, but it is kind of crap a BIG step down from being used to using email on a bberry.
Frankly, I am very, very strongly considering chucking this and going back to my Torch. While the Note probably does everything else a lot better than a year old bberry device, and their next model will probably still be way behind the Galaxies and iPhones, email is the most important thing in a phone to me and bberry seems to blow these devices out of the water.
Or I could switch my primary email -- but I've been happily using Yahoo! for nearly 15 years.
Anyone have thoughts/advice? Am I somehow wrong in the above? Are there better options? I was so looking forward to this new device, and now I'm mostly bitterly disappointed -- feeling I have to sacrifice the most important primary function for all the internet/camera/social media bells and whistles.
Thoughs/comments/advice appreciated. I've only ever had a bberry until yesterday (though I do have an iPad and Yahoo email works just fine there).

I had the quite similar problem before, i mean I didn't get my emails quickly on my Note 2, i wondered why. But then I realized that I have the same yahoo email account set up on my iPhone and on that iPhone my emails still arrived so very quickly. Then I deleted my yahoo mail account on the iPhone and changed it to other yahoo email account so that my primary yahoo email account is only set up on my Note 2, since then my emails arrived quickly on my Note 2 and no more problem.
Just wondering maybe you have not deleted yr yahoo account on yr bberry ?

I have been using the yahoo mail app for over two years. Its development has been slow but right now it's working fine for me.

If you want push then you need to set up the Yahoo account manually via the option Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for the stock email app.
And yes, the Yahoo mail app for Android is crap indeed.

For many years in the early/mid 2000's Yahoo Mail was the only service that offered push to Blackberry. It was the defacto push offering in the marketplace.
I set mine up manually through the Active Sync settings and now its push. I struggled on and off for years with that Yahoo Mail app on my Hero/EVO/NexusS/GalaxyNexus and I gave up. Some updates would trash the app and it would be a quarter till they released a fix. I'd avoid it if I were you.

[Q] Exchange 2010 and Droid Incredible Push

Hello,
I have a question I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere. We are upgrading from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 at my work, while testing Exchange 2010 I found out that activesync (push) email works great on iPhones and iPads, but not on my Droid Incredible . I can create the account just fine and manually refresh to see my mail, but if I have my exchange activesync email set to "as items arrive" and send myself a test email, I don't get it until I open up the email app and it refreshes.
I'm using the default htc email app, I have tried deleting and recreating my account several times. If I have the setting set to any thing else, like sync every 5 minutes it works just fine, but for some reason if it's set to as items arrive I won't get the email until I manually look at the email app. I can't deploy exchange 2010 with this going on as we have many other android users in the company.
Please help!
The Android native email application needs improvement no doubt. I use TouchDown as we have Exchange 2007 and are enforcing security policies. Those don't work too well with the native application.
Push works great, but it's a one time fee of $20, but in my opinion worth it.

Thanks RMarkwald! I downloaded and tried out TouchDown and it works great for Exchange 2010. At least I have a solution if users start complaining about push no longer working after we upgrade.
Hopefully htc will get an update out for this at some point because a simple thing like activesync should work on the stock email app.
Hey no problem! I think that the issue is more of an Android issue, not really HTC, cause it happens across the board. I've had nothing but issues before I purchased TD, and that was before we enabled PIN/security features. $20 is a lot, but my company purchased it for me, and I can use it on my Xoom without having to pay another $20, so IMO it's worth it.
Their support is great too, from the times I've contacted them with questions. I really like you can sync Tasks and manage your Out of Office too.

[Q] mail app sending blank e-mails like crazy

So this has happened on an ICS leaked ROM on my Epic 4G Touch and now on my Galaxy Nexus. Since the GN is ICS-native I thought I'd ask here.
I have an Exchange account linked up. 2x on the Epic and now today on the GN the mail app has started replying to all messages in my inbox with a blank message. To all recipients, including myself. I am sure it's from my phone because
-it has my name in quotes, which is not the case when one uses the actual e-mail client at work
-they are not in my sent box in the e-mail client/system at work
-they are in the "mobile sent" box on the phone.
So...anyone have any idea why this might be happening? Any one else seen this?
here's another way of asking - anyone have their GN set up for Exchange for more than...4 months where this has NOT happened?
I was good on my Epic for at least a month on ICS. Probably 6 weeks. Then 2x on the Epic in a matter of 3 weeks, then just 1 week later on my GN.
thanks.
I have been using exchange account with my nexus since early feb. before that on my galaxy S as well. I do remember this happening on my galaxy S once. but that was using samsung provided email client and not native google email client. Per my notes, I deleted my exchange account and added it again and that fixed the issue for a while. I however ended up replacing stock email client with an app called Touchdown Exchange. it is much better exchange client. and allowed me to circumvent some additional annoyances with stock email client. I know this does not help you solve your issue necessarily
i have had this problem for a while.
i used to have a D1, and one day, randomly about 6 months ago, it decided to resend every email i'd sent from my phone, but with blank content. I noticed that i had "sync 2 weeks" selected, and it resent every email from the past 2 weeks.
last week (6 weeks after getting my GNEX), same issue - this time, i had it set to only sync 1 week, and again, only 1 weeks' worth of emails was resent. Then again, yesterday.
Exchange 2007 with stock client.
I've changed it from PUSH to EVERY 5 MINUTES, and restricted my "days to sync" to 3.
Were you on PUSH as well? I hope to God this is the cause (Push/Exchange conflict), because if not, my work will force me to ditch the GNEX and get a BlackBerry.

Any Touchdown email users?

For about a year I've been using RoadSync as my Exchange email client, which worked quite well. However I'm starting to use more folders with rules that automatically shift messages as they arrive in my inbox, and RoadSync doesn't seem to pick up new messages in these folders so I miss notifications of unread mail.
Enter Touchdown - I've been evaluating both it and Moxier Mail. Touchdown seems to win based on the customization features and the fact that new mail notifications have the subject visible (Moxier just says "New Mail").
The issue is that Touchdown doesn't seem to be responding well to push email. It only notifies me of new mail at longer intervals, acting as though it is polling - even though I've got it to push during peak hours. At the same time RoadSync is getting the push notifications immediately. (Note this still happens when I turn off the other apps push notifications, it doesn't appear to be a conflict between them).
Anyone else have push issues with Touchdown email?
Follow-up: after two days experimenting with these other apps, I just re-visited RoadSync and realized the issue was that the sub-folders were no longer selected for syncronization. Did that and everything is good.
I do really like Touchdown however (not least of all because I can get a completely unified inbox which RoadSync doesn't seem to do) so if it would do push notifications properly I'd make the switch.
I use Touchdown flawlesly on my T-Mobile SGS3. My only issue is that the Touchdown email widget is fugly
Been using TouchDown for several years on various Android phones.
Works flawlessly on my SGSIII. I'll often see e-mail show up on my phone with seconds of it showing up in Outlook (sitting at my desk of course).

Same here. Bought it when it launched. I use TD for all of my email, but then use the built in exchange only for contacts and my calendar.

I been using touchdown for about a year now. The only issue I have is that email attachments get corrupted when I download the attachment and won't open. Anyone have that issue or know how to resolve
I like and have been using Touchdown since I purchased a Samsung Vibrant some years ago. IMHO there just isn't much wrong with it. I do wish it did a better job of integrating contacts and calendar ala native email on an iPhone/WinPhone7 but it does let me sync folders, download and open documents and does support multiple exchange server accounts so I'm quite pleases with it.
Yep another Touchdown user. Mail arrives instantly for me. I do have a license for Moxier and try it out as i think the interface is nicer than touchdown's but there are less options and it is slower (not receiving mail but the interface).
Just now using Touchdown tablet interface on nexus 7. Works well too.
If you're mail is from a corporate server, you might want to contact your IT dept if you're seeing lag on your phone. I believe some versions of Exchange both have issues with ActiveSync (older versions) and some of the newer ones I believe can even limit the pushing to mobile clients.
Your issue might be a server based one and have nothing to do with Touchdown itself.
I've used touchdown in my last 2 companies and it's been GREAT. The only time i saw any issue with push mail was when I tried to modify some of the peak/offpeak settings in an earlier version of touchdown... that version had a bug where if you touched the settings at all, it would never do push and would only poll... perhaps that bug still exists? My solution at the time was to wipe all the touchdown data, uninstall the app, make sure the folder on the SD card was gone, then reinstall from scratch, making sure i didn't touch any of the peak/offpeak timings or anything to do with polling.. never a problem since.

Thanks for the advice. I did a re-install and without touching the settings, push was working perfectly. Then I set weekends as off-peak, push still working. Finally, set off-business hours during the week for polling, and push STILL works. So looks like I'm good now, just have to decide if I like Touchdown better or want to continue with RoadSync.
I've been using Touchdown for years. Works great. Almost always there is no delay in pushing emails.
I do note that the custom notification doesn't seem to work, as far as choosing LED alert colors.

Peak / Off Peak email schedule

I've seen a few slightly older threads about this but wanted to ask if anyone has a workable solution now.
In the past I've owned skinned HTC and Samsung phones and the email client has included the ability to set different synching periods for peak and off peak. This is missing from the nexus' stock email client.
What I want is to always have my work exchange email set to push during the day but either entirely manual or maybe every few hours otherwise. I would also like my gmail account to keep push mail on at all times.
I've looked into a few things like tasker, timerific and synker and a few third party email clients but nothing seems quite right.
I can kill all synching but I want my gmail synched, I can silence notifications / vibration etc but I'm still going to be using my phone in the evenings and if widgets etc are telling me I have work mail then I'm going to end up reading it :-(
I'm happy to consider pretty much anything that will sort this for me so please, any advice appreciated.
touchdown does this quite fine. i use it for my work email.
not sure about the stock client however.
I'll have another go but last time I looked at touchdown it was rather ugly.
I quite like the stock client :-(
Anyone else?
Does your samsung stock email client do push for gmail and yahoo on sgs3 i9300? I can only set to poll ar minimum 5min.

HTC Stock Email App

Hello,
I've recently bought an M9 and have had it for a couple weeks now. I get a very large amount of work emails a day (100+) and I notice that the email app struggles to keep up as far as syncing. Is anyone else experiencing these issues or are there any settings I can mess with to make the syncing work smoother than what it is? I notice the app struggles with push mail and sync. It works, but I hate the fact that my phone is now always 5-10 emails behind from outlook on my computer. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the smart sync setting? Or you can set it to sync every 5, 10, 15 minutes, etc. Smart sync works great for me during peak hours, though I don't get near that much email per day.
I get around 200 to 300 work emails a day on a slow day. I use the Apps Nine or Touchdown for exchange email. I had the issue on the M8 with stock app. moved over to the M9 and i have only used nine and have never had a sync issue.

I get a lot of SPAM in one of my personal accounts daily, but have not noticed any lag/sync issues. I have it set to 15 min checks.
One thing that I'm not sure of is what your work email account is... POP3? Exchange? Other? If it's exchange, you may want to give Touchdown a try (free for 30 days). Not only is it feature rich and smooth as butter, but my company employs lots of policies that only affect the Touchdown App, not the whole phone. (For example: They pushed a device encryption policy to Android phones--I didn't have to encrypt my phone as the Touchdown app "absorbed" and encrypted just me email.)
Nine will do the same thing. It has in app encryption. I went with nine over Touchdown because of issues with exchange 365 otherwise touchdown is awesome! I haven't tried touchdown in a few months so they could have worked out the issue by now.

It seems to me, now that Symantec is running the show, Touchdown is in a really good place. I had a configuration issue and they replied to my inquiry and resolved the issue within an hour. (I managed to find a bug/glitch--the rep said it would be fixed in a future update.)
I don't have trouble with my exchange account set for push.
I did have to encrypt the whole phone, but that makes sense since I get lots of attachments in my download folder.

Theres an apk you can find online that allows you to add an exchange account on gmail. Works flawlessly.
