I know I'm a noob. I have looked over these forums for a long time. And I did use the search with little success. I even searched the mighty Google for help. But my phone shows that I only have 3.9gb free on storage in settings. And 6.7gb free in application manager. What is going on? Please see included pics.

Can you offer some more info like what Rom you are running etc?
My first suggestion is to do a full wipe and re-install the ROM. Most "quirky" errors are resolved by doing a full wipe and re-install.
Format the internal sd card and flash back to stock with odin. I had the same thing happen to me when I used that app2sd script

Some zip archive files as well as any cwm backups you may have will not show up on the internal storage reports. To get a good picture of your actual storage usage and available disk space you need disk storage analyzer app - I have seen a couple people here recommend one from the play store, I don't remember which it was though.
You can search for one or maybe someone who knows of a good one will pop in and say.

I am so sorry. Phone is 100% stock AT&T 4.0.4 not rooted or anything. I'm sorry if this stuff seems elementary, but I came from a iPhone and I did mod and jailbreak and all that to it so I know my way around apple products but this phone has been a little bit of a learning curve. I just got sick of apples subpar hardware... So I moved to android.

Ok I can accept that. But what is really the free space? It shows 12.05gb of space. I know the OS and other system type stuff is taking the other 4gb that would total the 16 of the phone. But even the math of the doesn't add up in settings/storage.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
The system partitions aren't represented in the storage manager. Reason being: you can't change it. It's only showing what you have available for apps and your own files.
No ROM I've seen will show the "full" storage.

From my understanding the inc2 and majority of today's "smartphones" can only access up to 32gb of external memory. I have yet to see a 64gb card installed in any phone.
I could be absolutely wrong in my assumption.
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
Did a quick research and found out that anything above 32gb would be classified as a SDXC card which would not be read by current smartphones.

plenty of music (32gb alone), movies, videos etc.... I have Google Music, but I would also like the option of not having to stream online to listen to my music.
Just installed the 64GB microSDXC card from SanDisk and it works just fine. Formatted the card in the phone and copied all my stuff (music, pictures, etc.) over. Only problem I've run into was Astro FC, but a quick reinstall fixed that. Sure is nice to have a room for more ROM backups now.

Can't say I've noticed any change in performance vs the 32GB microSDHC I had before. Cost $160 through Amazon.

What the hell is that miscellaneuous thing taking up 4.11gb?
That's why you have no space.
i would expect it disabled for a mobile phone, but ext4 allows reserving space for root. On desktop systems that setting is often at 5% of availible storage. As you got root i'd try to grab enough of the start of the raw partition where /data is saved on (or all if you have the space and time) to a linux system and run dumpe2fs on the raw file to see if that's enabled. In case you can change it with tune2fs, but you'd likely need that crossbuild for android.
It this is really the cause something you used to format/wipe /data is seriously bugged though.

Not entirely sure about why its protecting you from downloading more.
But to clean up that misc folder, why don't you delete those ROM .zip's? You surely don't need them after you've flashed, why are you holding onto them? That's 356mb right there. Also look into your Clockworkmod folder for downloads that you've drone via ROM manager and don't need anymore.
that's not a reply is it. I can clean up and delete files I dont use but that's besides the point

Like I said, I don't know why its preventing you from downloading more, but while you try to figure it out, you can delete unused files and download apps again...
The first thing I would do is deleting the market app's cache and data in settings > apps > all. Then boot into recovery and wipe the /cache partitition. More often than not that resolves false "out of disk space" messages.
I did the market data delete and a full cache wipe through recovery
That doesn't work ... I've also started getting storage getting low messages in notification bar
I don't understand what the heck is 500 mb available showing for, if it is unusable?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
As seen in another thread you need to run Lucky Patcher. That fixes it.
I have this exact same issue floating around 500 meg free. Is it a set limit for other processes to be able to save stuff, eg camera pictures etc...?? Obviously if you ran it down to like 1 meg where would it save a photo?!
Coincidentally I'm on apex too.....

If you're truly interested in changing your default storage device to your ext sd I suggest you search xda. A much easier method to do what you're trying to do would be to find a camera app that will allow you to change the file destination. Good luck! Yep! Just checked and it was almost 3GB again. I just deleted it but this time I checked to see what was in there and it looked like it took a small video of every movie/video file that I have stored on my phone & SD card. Ok guys, it has nothing to do with any of this...
Its all related to Google.
Do this, go to settings, accounts, gmail.
Uncheck the sync Picasa albums.
Backout.
Then go to applications, all.
Scroll down to gallery an clear the cache.
With anyone using hangouts an sending pics, it caches every single one on your phone.

Of course that only works if you use (and sync) Picasa and hangouts. So ymmv
My thumbnail issue was definitely file manager related, switching to a filemanager that allowed me to manage its thumbnail cache fixed it.

Just delete the whole thing you wont loose nothing important. Save you time and space. Try "Root cleaner" I had 3.56gb of space. Bought the pro version and did a quick clean. Now I have 5Gb of space! What the app does it deletes all unnecessary files.

Well I'm still having trouble figuring out why it does this. I don't use Astro File Explorer, Picassa or Hangouts. I can't see this as a normal process because if left unchecked you would never have any internal storage or at least half or more would be swallowed up by these useless video clips.

Plain and Simple. How Many apps do you have installed on your Phone, Not Including System Apps
Also If you Don't Mind Listing them.
One hundred something. I don't know the exact number off the top of my head. That's what I love about the S4...so much memory that you don't have to worry about running out of space unless you install a lot of games (which I don't). Apps2SD solves that problem, too.

I guess i keep some just to see if theres updates which will make them useful; such as google keep which is begging to be integrated with google now.
But i just found an app to help with that task
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cypressworks.changelogviewer
It lets you add apps to observe for updates without having to install them. Currently i only use it to get an overview of changes to my all my installed apps since the play store sucks for that. This app shows changelogs all on one screen. It's really well made
My name is scoob and I'm a recovering appaholic... I used to download just about any app for any task i could find. I had apps on my phone that i never once used. It was like hardcore app hoarding...I used to have like 140-170 apps total, but I have since cut waaaay back. Backups used to take forever. I'm proud to say, I now only have a total of about 56

This gave me a good laugh because it hit so close to home! I had to purge my collection of useless apps I had a while back as well...
I have around 120 but lately I've been doing some app pruning and getting rid of ones that I haven't opened lately.
I probably have around 50 or so.
You guys got a lot of apps! I user to have about 40 apps, but I realized that I didnt use most of them. So now I have about 20 apps, if I urgently need an app I download them at the time.
Sometimes I keep looking for some games that I might like, but rarely find some lol

I have 302 installed, with a few gigs of free space.
I have 1562 user apps backed up with Titanium Backup though. I restore apps as I need them, so depends on how long since i've flashed a new rom.
What's the point of having a phone with a ton of free space? It's just wasted potential to me.
Usually around 50-60.
