GPS performance - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I am thinking of getting an S III when the 64 gb one comes out. How's the GPS? My wife's S II GPS is lousy. I know Sammy has (had) that reputation. My Motorola Photon GPS is very good. Sorry if this is a duplicate. I couldn't find anything in a search

I have found the GPS to be excellent on the gs3. I came from gs2 epic touch which had horrible GPS at times - completely wiping the phone and installing the ice cream sandwhich software helped a lot though.

Thanks! That's what my wife haas and it's unusable. My old Epic 4G had a terrible GPS as well. My Photon is stuck on Gingerbread but the GPS works well. I think the s3 looks like a winner. Now if only Sprint was......

GPS is working well for me on my GS3.. Stock

My GPS works great. Even used it today when i had no cell signal, took a little extra time but got a lock and followed me in Google maps.

Yeah GPS is better on the gs3 than the epic touch which I had before

Thanks! It seems that this phone has a good GPS. I hope the other radios are as good as the Photon. The GS II are definitely inferior to the photon...

GPS is phenomenal. Domestic sattelites and GLONASS. Even has a damn barometer so it can use pressure to gauge height.
Samsung has fixed their traditional gps problem. This is the best location solution on the market.

When I left my Touch Pro 2 for the Evo 4G I really thought I would miss the physical keyboard. I do miss it every one in a while but with the bigger screen and Swype I really do not miss the keyboard much.

Poor GPS reception on GS3 - - Please help...
I have been having problems out of my GS3's gps reception. Navigation will not lock on satellites. Telenav isn't much better. Sometimes, Navigation will revert to cell tower triangulation and give me a general location, but forget it when it comes to navigating with it.
I was rooted, but I have reverted back to stock with QBKing77's method and sextape's all in one stock rom. The problem started after reverting to stock so I think this might be the culprit. I am going to take it to a repair center and act like there has been no modification and see what they say.
But I wanted to check here first.
Thanks

I came from photon. Had issues where the phone has to be rebooted to get a GPS lock. No issues on the gs3. Stock jb and ics for a couple of weeks.

You could try installing GPS Status from the Play Store and use it to clear and refresh your GPS data. That may require root, though. This was how a lot of people used to fix GPS on the Evo 4G when using GB and ICS AOSP ROMs.

The app does not require root. Great program. Still had GPS issues though. Swapped it out since I have insurance. Now, every other day or so, I have to restart my new phone to get it to connect to satellites. Weird. I wish I knew what was going on or at least that someone else was having the same problems.

I have the very same issues with my S3 which is only less than a month old. Didn't why at first, and took it to Sprint Store and they said it was the bad antenna and will give me a refurbish phone. I didn't understand??? Kind of like, I bought a brand new car and take in for a fix and dealer took me to the use car lot for a certificated vehicle. They refused to give me a new phone, so I contact Samsung for repair.
Just my phone and the same problem reoccurring.
Please if someone can help? I always come here for advices...search all over the net, but no luck.

When will the first update be out ?

Currently a Nexus-S 4G owner, thinking of getting the GS II, but keep reading so many issues with WiFi...Network/Radio...SMS text problems...I am scared to upgrade to the S II, until an update/patch is released to fix these issues I have read about.
Also my Nexus-S has pretty crap WiFi signal already, in my house with a great WiFi setup, it drops way too often, my EVO 4G was rock solid always connected.
Any news or opinions on this ?

Honestly, I haven't had ANY of these problems. Maybe I got one from a different batch because I was backordered.
My phone seemlessly goes from WiFi to 3G and back again without any intervention from me, in weak OR strong coverage areas. To my knowledge, all my texts have gone through.
I just rooted late last night (with the stock kernel), and so far I haven't had any issues, either.
No issues what so ever trust me. Ask stock phone. Always on wifi when at home. Wifi turns on and connects super quick. text calls come thru right away.

I agree 100% with your sentiment IRT the thread...but, I had 2 LOS in the 5 or 6 days I was rooted. I rooted and had another 2 over 2 or 3 days. Stock kernel reinstalled and I've been good so far, but, I think blaming the kernel is foolish. The problem occurred before I rooted and after I rooted.
Does the fact that I am now rooted with a stock kernel and haven't had the problem suggest to you that only rooted stock-kernels are without fault?
You guys know that you can have everything stock, including kernel/rom/recovery, except the rom would also be rooted by addition of su binary/apk/busybox?
I haven't had any los or any other severe issues before or after I rooted the phone.
It may be that since I live in a small university town, my towers aren't getting upgraded to rev b, but yours are. These issues may not have anything to do with the phone at all. Maybe it has something to do with the sprint maintenance timing.
Or maybe it's because some people bought their phones from third-party retailers, and the phones weren't properly activated.
Or maybe it's some commonly used app that people with problems have installed, and I and others don't have installed.
I've had minimal to no issues personally. And I've had none while using stock Kernel. Using i9000 kernel I had a few LOS, but infrequent.
I also owned the Nexus S...and this is BY FAR a better device from a connectivity comparison.
Remember that the complaints you see are misleading...in that people are more apt to post about an issue, versus those that don't. It's human nature.
rooting or not has NOTHING TO WITH THE ISSUES!!
- I have had a stock phone since the day it came out, and have "watchdog lite" installed, watchdog alerts me about 10-15 times a day that "suspend", "events/0", and "base system" in my phone are using over 50% CPU while the phone is sleeping... LOL, it JUST happened again while i was typing this...
- also had the LOS issues 2 times, has to restart the phone to get signal again
- once, i was in a call, and when i went to "end" the call, i could not click the end button... the other side wud NOT hang up because it was customer service, they r not allowed 2 hang up on a person... so i had 2 restart the phone to fix this
- sometimes i click the power button to wake the screen, n nothing happens for about 5 seconds... so i click the button again, and the screen turns on and back off right away... n den i have 2 click the button a 3rd time to wake the phone...
- sometimes app just close randomly, and if you try to open the app again, its begins from the VERY BEGINNING, so w.e. u were doing in the app is lost... this sucks for games, and if ur in the middle of something important
- when the phone is on charge, the keyboard sometimes acts weird, typing letters u never click... and also u have 2 touch the screen 2wice sometimes 2 make selections... only happens when on charge, u take it off charge, n its back 2 normal right away
cant think of anything else as of right now... but there are some issues in the phone that can most likely be fixed either via root, or thru a sprint update...
I had the nexus s 4g and due to the antenas that phone was practically unusable especially on wifi. The gs2 doesnt have any of those issues. This is the first phone since the evo 4g that has impressed me snd i have owned the evo 3d and photon as well.

I seem to be having an issue with battery draw whenever wifi is on.
I'm not rooted, my phone is 100% unmodded. I haven't even installed a different launcher.
Im hoping for an update so my games dont continue to crap the bed 10 mins into them. Nothing like trying to lvl up in nova and never finishing an online match.

LOS can occur with or without the root. I've only experienced it once but it was in an area with good coverage and no one else with Sprint phones at my office encountered it when I did. It only happened once but I do NOT have a modified ET4G - it is stock. There is a detailed thread on this on android forums and it can occur with or without a root. Apparently it was listed on android forums or android police that this is a known issue. I don't use wifi but it seems to be a common issue for people using wifi from what has been reported.
That being said, I would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking to get a phone.

Yeah... you would think that being unable to handle games for more than 10 minutes would have been something that the engineers would have caught during development...
I have had no issues either. I had one LOS after I flashed the rooted kernel. Went right back to stock kernel and no issues since. And none before the rooted kernel either.

Damnit GPS

I had great GPS Locks until I rooted to ICS Roms...No problem with GB and any rom on GB...When I went to ICS modem after modem just random locks...Then I tried a GB Rom on ICS...this worked the best...I was usin an EL29 Modem...Today I did the One Click Odin back to stock installed CWM...Gotta lock ...went back to CWM...restored ICS Rom...gotta lock in seconds...without usin WiFi...just GPS Test...Now I'll try drivin with it ansd see what happens...Usually I get the first lock quick...then stop the car go wherever ...return to car fire up GPS...and no lock...the only way to get it back is to reboot...then I get it again in seconds...It drives ya crazy...But like I said when I was on GB...whether Stock or rooted...never had a problem with GPS...ILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS TODAY...
i've flashed between different modems and roms over the 5 months i've had my e4gt and gps locks within seconds for me. i'm on blazer4 EL29 right now, with the EG30 modem. it's always had the best signal and speed for me. screwed around with some FC modems last night, bootlooped my phone trying to downgrade from FC07 in CWM. had to use heimdall to flash EL29. s'all good tho.

The GPS issue is definitely a bummer. I'm unrooted fully stock & have tried everything possible to get GPS to lock on. The only thing not making me from making a big stink about to Sprint is that I hardly have to use GPS. Still this issue definitely needs to be addressed & fixed.

Okay if you are running ICS it is a known issue to have constant GPS lock-ups. I can run GB EL29 flawlessly with perfect GPS, and then flashed any ICS leak and have the GPS lock up after using it a few times.

"Ghost Touch" Issues

Idk if some of you have heard about the "ghost touch" thing where sometimes when you turn on the screen it'd be like someone was pushing on some of your capacitive buttons and you wouldn't be able to touch or do anything on the screen. Turning off the screen for a couple seconds and turning it on again helps alleviate the problem for me.
How common of a problem is this? It seems that this never used to happen until ICS came around. Is it due to software or hardware like a bad digitizer? Is this something that I should be worried about hardware wise because I'm planning on hanging onto this phone for at least another 6 months and warranty's going to be up soon in a week or two. I'm using The Goodness ROM and agat's kernel if that matters at all. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

After trying to figure out what nearby was causing the RF intererence so I could eliminate it, I found this thread which explains that the interference originates in the phones 3G radio, not the environment. I just recently started having this problem, and from reading that thread, I think I didn't notice it before only because I was using a kernel with a fix integrated. So if you are having this problem and don't want to do surgery on your phone, maybe try to find a kernel with the software patch.

This has been happening like crazy lately, ever since Hurricane Sandy and also since running the FK09 JB leak. The Sprint signal in my area went from bad to garbage since the hurricane, not sure if the JB leak is also adding to it or not.
It is so annoying I am tempted to actually buy a different phone even though I love the E4GT.

Agreed Sprint screwed NJ hard as AT&T and Verizon restored services within a week...
On a side note, AT&T's LTE was up and running within 48 hours...Dunno about Verizon cause most of my friends have iPhone's with them. But I was roaming on Verizon full bars the whole time. But guess what happened when I tried to make a call? "Welcome to Verizon, please have a phone card or credit card at handy to make a call". I have roaming under my plan and I would like to use it...especially not crapping out in emergencies.

Gps very fast

Over the years ive owned and used several blackberrys iphones and androids and I have never had the gps work as well as it does on the note 2. I mean I get a lock within seconds even when im indoors which has never happened for me before

I got a Rogers Note 2 and it connects very quickly as well. Correct me if im wrong but the galaxy line of phones i below actually have a real gps receiver built in that works with gps satellites where other phonea like iphones and blackberries use the wireless signal (data) to detect gps position.

I agree with the OP. GPS issues with the original Note was the single biggest reason I wanted to upgrade, but it also made me hesitant. GPS was terrible on the original Note (at least for me). I always had to end up downloading some third party app that was supposed to help the GPS lock quicker. It worked sometimes, but other times it didn't do much. *Knock on wood* seems like the GPS issues has been fixed on the Note II. I always get an almost instant connection. Very happy about that, as I use navigation a lot when I travel about.

That may be the case for some of the older phones but I know for a fact that the phones I had had a built in gps receiver. I suppose they just had software or hardware issues which prevented them from locking quickly? Trying to figure out exactly what it is now so I can hopefully keep it going for this note II and potentially help those who can't get a quick lock.

I attempted to use Google nav today and felt that there was a bit of lag between me turning and the app updating with the next instruction. It took a good 10 seconds for the final address to appear as I turned onto the last street near my destination. Perhaps it's a fault of the app and not GPS tracking.

In Sprint store, GSII, 2 GSIIIs, 2 Notes an no GPS connection! But HTC EvoLTE locked

My replacement E4GT's gps just does not work, brought it to store and they said they "fixed" it with some software patch. Well as I suspected it did not fix it and would love to know about this patch but didn't get any info out of them.
Went back and tested gps on a gsii, 2 gsiiis, 2 notes and none of them would get a gps lock. Tried HTC evo lte and gps locked almost instantly. Repair guy said he can reload original GB on my phone to see if that makes it work, he said he still has gb on his phone and it is better than current.
I can get a replacement but it will count towards my 3 exchanges per year, trying to argue that they gave me a defective phone from the start and that it should not count.
Oh well, my wife's E4GT gps locks instantly while mine keeps blinking for hours in the same spot. Both phones are on official OTA and no root.
I really like this phone and love that it is wimax since no lte yet, just sick of getting defective ones. Going back tomorrow to talk to someone else there and then will decide about exchange.
I could not believe that the GSIIIs and Note 2s would not even get a gps lock at the store but HTC did, Samsung really needs to do better with this.
Samsung phones have bad gps radios
Htc has better ones that's about it
Couple things I'd try, since this doesn't seem to be a typical "how do I fix" thread.. Or the beer kicked in..
Did you try a side by side with something like GPS Test from the play store?

I'm interested if it is actually hardware or software related.

I have had my E4GT next to my wifes E4GT with same stock OTA FI27 and hers locks pretty damn fast while my GPS icon blinks for an hour. I also had my phone in my car right next to my Garmin Nuvi and that locks and my phone does not.
I have downloaded GPS status tools from Play store and when I open that all it does is say searching for GPS....
I even grabbed another E4GT from someone and that GPS locked almost instantly!! It was on Calks GB 3.0

I am glad to hear this, my comment wasn't to say that all Notes have bad GPS, just my observation while in the Sprint store.
The GPS on my previous E4GTs have all worked but this one I have now does not.
My phone wouldnt lock either. I always lock gps in an app like gps status before anything. Anyway all I do is shut gps off then back on. Reboot with gps on. When booted up run gps status outside, get lock. After that it always locks instantly. I have to do this with every flash or it will not lock. I think its software not hardware

You aren't alone. I've had two E4GT and the GPS is horrible and sporadic. If you're indoors forget about even trying to get a lock.
There is some sort of hardware problem with some, but not all, samsung phones. My old e4gt had absolutely awful gps, and my new one locks incredibly quickly, indoors or not. I tried every single "fix" out there, probably flashed at least 15 different zips and settings. The simple answer is that the onlt way to fix the problem is with a new phone - and even then, it's a lottery.

My GNote locks on instantly also. Big improvement in that department over the E4GT.
