[Q] Can Sprint purposely slow data speed? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Tonight my data speed became SO slow. Terrible ping, and very low download and upload speeds. We all know Sprint isn't fast as it is, and this is just horrible. What really is weird about this, is my brothers S3 data speeds haven't changed, and are still normal. Can Sprint slow your data speeds if you download a lot? I didn't think they did, but then again... And, if not maybe someone has an idea for why it's being like this? Could it be that I rooted my phone, and am using a wireless tethering app? I know Sprint has been trying hard to crack down on tethering that's not being paid for.

I did a prl and profile update, but that didn't really do anything.

It's probably related to all the network upgrades going on. However...
Read your contract/TOS. Yes they can.
Sprint reserves the right, without notice or limitation, to limit data throughput speeds or quantities or to deny, terminate, end, modify, disconnect, or suspend service if an individual engages in any of the prohibited voice or data uses detailed below or if Sprint, in its sole discretion, determines action is necessary to protect its wireless networks from harm or degradation.

I hope it's just network upgrades. My phone seems fine this morning.

[Q] Extremely Slow 3G/4G Speeds T-mobile

Hello, I've been having a problem for the last few months. I don't know if its been posted already, but as the title states, I've been having EXTREMELY slow download speeds on the T-Mobile network, and I'm not throttled.
I see people complaining about how their internet speed is about 150kB/s.
Well mine, on 3g, averages out to about 3-6kB/s.
I get faster speeds on EDGE, pulling in about 25-30kB/s.
Does anyone know why?
I didn't have this problem before, I used to pull in around 400-500kB normally. As of around summer, internets been slow as molasses. Unless its around 4:00 am. Then its moderately fast.
Any suggestions? I'm shown to be in 3G/4G coverage, and I certainly showed it before, now, its just frustrating.
Check to see if you're being throttled. If not, then it's probably congestion. Hard to tell without going through the usual tests.
Are you positive you're not being throttled?
Where u from probably congested?

Try flashing the latest 04.19 radio then match the RIL files.

I know for a fact I'm not, I'm on a new billing period, and I haven't even used about 1GB
Mine speed is about 600-800kb/s, but sometimes it goes down to tens,or ever 0. Check first whether other devices work well or not.. Or fash the radio.

Have you ever been throttled before? Are you over your limit or come close? That's WAY TOO severe to be congested. I'd call Customer Care and check with them. You might be able to tell by trying out the old wap.voicestream.com APN...
Have you tried rebooting your phone? sometimes that could be the case.

[Q] Slow Tethering Speed

I've been tethering laptop to my Galaxy Nexus for a while now but recently the download rate has dropped from 12,000 kbps to 200kbps. Oddly enough my upload rate is 10,000kbps. These speeds are while tethered. My data rate on the phone is 21,000kbps down and 19,000kbps. I haven't made any changes to the software on the phone prior to this happening and I've tried tethering different devices.
Any clue what is happening here?

Is it happening after you have been tethering for a while, say an hour or so. Cause I have had the same issues as well after tethering my laptop for more than an hour. My fear is from what i've heard is starting to track down high data usage for us who have unlimited data plans and not paying the extra for tethering and somehow slowing the connection from 4g to 3g. Although mine gets so slow I cant load up a web page it takes so long.
It only happens when I'm tethering. My phone still has 4g data rates if I'm streaming a video or downloading something.
I've thought that Verizon might be throttling me given that my upload rate is still high, but do they have the ability to determine whether or not traffic is from the phone or from a tethered device?

Im certainly no expert but I do know that AT&T has implemented a plan to throttle the unlimited data plan customers down to 3g speeds after they reach 5gig limit till the end of the monthly billing cycle then bring it back up to 4g. I would think that Verizon can and do do this too. Also wouldnt it seem possible that since they require us to pay for tethering and have the ability to turn on or off that feature on our cell phones that they could also have the ability to track down the ones with high data usage and throttle them down? Again I am not an expert but only speak from the experiences I have and heard.

But he's on Verizon. And AT&T is throttling all data connections at 3gb or 5gb, not just when you're tethering. OP says he gets his full speeds on the phone but not the tethered device.
If Verizon was going to monitor him for tethering and try to manage the connection, they'd just shut it off and send him a warning email/SMS, not throttle.
Despite tethering and never using Wifi, I haven't exceeded the 5Gb soft cap yet. I don't think I've directly given Verizon a reason to throttle me unless they can tell that my phone is tethering without the feature being on my plan.
This weekend I tried installing different ROMs but all of them have the same low tethering speed.

Slow data speeds and spotty service

I've noticed spotty and inconsistent data/service on my phone. Even with full bars I get data speeds like shown in the attachments. When using the phone it will sometimes say I have no data connection and ask me to retry. I retry a few times and it finally loads whatever it is I'm loading. I've also noticed that my phone sometimes gets a little warm while in use. I've tried different modems with the same results and I'm about ready to just take it to the sprint store and get it swapped. Any suggestions on what might fix it? I can confirm that it is something with my phone because I've run side by side speed tests with my friends OG epic and their speeds are normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you have the HA/AAA passwords and also i figured out that in QPST in the PPP tab then click Um make sure the user ID and tether NAI are both Nulled

Thats about what I get too. Its a combo of this phone and Sprints crappy network! My evo got better speeds as well.
I am getting the same thing too. Funny thing is that it just started being this way recently, it wasn't always slow. It is not just the data speeds, I am getting no service in places where I used to get service.
I have been seriously thinking about switching carriers and moving to t-mobile but a little afraid because I have been with sprint forever.
If something don't change by the end of the month, sprint may be losing another customer since the GSIII is on ALL carriers.
I am in Raleigh/Durham NC by the way.
I agree... it didn't feel so bad until I got my ET4G, but I just figured it was a network issue. I'm trying the EL29 modem on my Calks 1.6 now. If anything I'll try going fully stock and see if that helps.
Welcome to the Sprint network
Some people are experiencing network issues in places where Sprint is upgrading to LTE. I don't know how far-reaching the effects are but could possibly have something to do with it.

Yes, I notice the same thing lately with Sprint Wimax, I may have to dumb Sprint later. Sprint data speed gradually slows down from time to time, some area, Sprint shows only 1X, I look at friends' phones with Verizon, ATT and Tmobile, they have very good speed. My brother has Verizon LTE phone, I speedtested at the same location, he got like 17mbps download and upload is about 15mbps, mine is 1X speed. Suck, I gonna say goodbye to Sprint later.
Welcome to the Sprint network with the New iPhone4s d-bags. Seems like things were great till they showed up. Even my Evo got slower.
data
Maybe your phone is stuck in 1x..
What i do is i go into debug (##debug# in dialer) and i go to others, and then i select hdr/1x and i click on evdo mode. Try doing this but you need your msl.
Caution: ive tried it on ics roms and its really weird. Try going on a GB rom and do that. Oh and on EVDO, you wont be able to recieve messages, so when you are done change the setting back to hybrid.

NC market has some EVDO issues affecting certain users.
I was just told this after getting off the phone with them earlier today for a different issue.
Still incredibly slow, but I'm hoping the network update fixes some things. Thanks for the information though!

Restricted Data Speeds

I can't figure this out and have researched it more than I like to admit without any luck...
I am running DN5v2 rom on my Note 2. I have been noticing that my data has been pretty slow lately and did a speedtest and only getting .5Mbps download. I have installed various modems with the same results. I did a clean install of the rom with same results. Checked APN settings and looked OK.
I thought it may be my area but did a speedtest on my sisters s5 with 20MBps download speeds (I understand different hardware may have something to do with it but I should get more than 0.5 MBps). I live in Orange County, CA so there is great signal around here.
I am all out of ideas. Anybody got anything I can try?
Much appreciated!!!
Last thing I checked was my data usage. Was at 5.7 Gb for this month. Talked to rep, they are throttling me till next billing period. Such #@[email protected]#%@!
Admin if you could please delete this thread. Thanks!

That'll cause your speed to slow down for sure. Hate when they throttle my speeds!
Anyway not sure what carrier you're using. But AT&T got hit by the Fcc for throttling customers, that had unlimited data..
Which I got hit plenty of times. Since I was in the 5% of users who used lots of data. BS I say... it's being investigated so it can be stopped.. hopefully.
One way around it was to use an older apn setting to trick the network. It worked sometimes, and then it wouldn't do squat.
I made a thread about data throttling awhile ago.

Yeah. I have had AT&T for over 10 years. Now they do this crap to their loyal customers. No need to say more...it's beating a dead horse. Hopefully the lawsuit that FTC put on them will take care of this once and for all.
My billing period is going to reset in a day or two. I'll try the old APN settings next time these douche bags throttle me.
Thanks for the response guys!

heavy t-mobile 5g users

I rarely only used my device internet at home, I would always get on wifi but this month seeing my speeds on 5g are better I left wifi off. So the issue I noticed is because I am over 50gb t-mobile blocks 5g and forces me to less speeds. The issue is the device thinks its still on 5g and does not knock down to 4g settings and that means no internet. So image my surprise waking up with missed emails and notifications from social media. Not a big deal really but it would be nice if my device switches automatically instead of me going into settings to change over to 4g.
This what the agent said and it makes sense, but why not slow my 5g to a crawl?
"Thank you for patiently working with me today. I was able to review the account and I can see that the reason for the slow connection with your mobile data is due to that we are on data deprioritization. This means that you are already exceeded the 50 GB of high speed data threshold per month, and you will experience slow mobile data connection. But definitely this will refreshed once your new billing cycle starts.

I dont believe it's the data being throttled. I dont use up my 50gb data but sometimes i get no data from 5g and have to change it to lte. I think its an issue with the towers because if i move to a new location it works fine and when going back to the previous location it stops working again. Might be that they are updating the towers or something. Atleast with that location i had issues with it stopped doing it. If lte works for you and 5g doesnt then its probably not being throttled

Doesn't matter if u switch back to 4g lte. Your data will be slowed to 2g speeds until this billing cycle is up. 50gb is a cap if high speed regardless of what network you use.

The tech promised a workaround and he honestly tried to help but no go. So we pushed it to a higher tech and they made a ticket. Second tech explained even if throttled the device should move down to 4g. Just like you said, its a tower issue that an engineer needs to check out.

After a second tier tech checked it out, she said it might be a tower issue that a engineer needs to check. She said if there is 5g issue the device should connect to 4g. Seems that 5g is on but not working. What she also said if its throttled it should switch down to other speeds. Are you sure that its not supposed to change?
Hopefully T-mobile continues to look into these "tower issues" - as others have said, 5G on T-mobile is a mess. I've just disabled it completely since it will constantly freeze the data connection on my phones.

I am pissed with 5g and I understand it's a new, but you are right it freezes and sometimes 4g lte is faster when i run speed tests. I can live with normal speeds, but freezing is not one of them.
My daughter consistently uses 50 to 60 gb a month alone and she never gets throttled.
