lightweight optional gb on internal memory? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

cm9/10 based roms are great and getting better with every passing day.but battery wise they are much worse compared to cleanGB or people's rom. i dont feel much problem on normal days as i am always near a power source, but when i have to travel somewhere, or stay away from charger for 10-12 hours, conditions become very bad. I hardly use the phone in such conditions and even then the epic fails most of the time to make it through. our epic has around 600 mb of internal memory free in cm9/10. so my guestion is, is it possible to have a dual boot internal memory light-weight version of gb(~100mb) so that we can use that while we are away from power for a long time.??i guess a lot of other epic users feel the same..developers please comment.

I'm currently using the gb miui 2.3.9 rom and battery life is very good.....That may be a good alternative for you.

It's all in the kernel and Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G doesn't have a dual boot kernel like the SGSII has. Be happy that you got 600MB is free for non SD card apps.

It would be a shame. I hate gingerbread on the Epic
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Hahaha seriously gingerbread is just so much better the leaks suck but the official is beautiful. Overclocking to 1.4 on froyo was burning my hands OC on GB is cold as ice....... there's just so much more stability on gingerbread if you know what your doing.

Yeah I don't understand either. Gingerbread is like 10 times faster with more memory free than Froyo was on my phone but to each their own I guess.

So you are saying I can safely run GB as a daily driver with no problems in wifi, 4g, gps, or any of the other odd quirks here and there? Or is it not quite there yet?
I am waiting in the wings for a solid stock like build with Sprint TV which actually is the only Sprint app that I would like to work and keep.
I am hoping to have a good GB daily driver!

I have been running GB since EF02 and never had any wifi or 4G issues and always was able to run Sprint TV. GPS was reduced to less satellite locks to conserve battery. The great Devs here ported the Fascinate library files to give us full locks again. I recommend Legendary 2.1 which has the GPS fixed library and the patch for key skips as well as a bunch of other goodies.

it was sooo damn close to being released too. Its probably the Official GB that killed the release. Apparently its still being worked on.

I had tried different GB build and ROMs. There's always the same issue, memory leak. So I always go back to my loyal friend SRF 1.2.

What you are seeing is a lot more apps loading themselves into memory whenever the heck they want to. I froze all the recent extras that I don't use like Google Talk, Google +, Maps, and a few others. Memory Booster Lite helped me see all the apps loading into memory to freeze or uninstall. I have no memory leaks, kill those apps in MBL task killer and I usually have 180MB free.

Which Kernel r you running?

Want to get a sense for what most plp flash. Thx

Ktoonsez's kernel. Getting decent battery life and it comes with a built in tweaking app, ktweaker.
Kt747, I think you'll find most people are running ktoonsez kernel.

+1 for KT747.

Another +1 for kt747
KT747! been having great battery life and performance. Also the ktweaker app is very useful
I use KT747 as well. Performance/battery life has been great, and I haven't even gotten into undervolting at all..yet
Stock Kernel + Stock ROM (LH1) + Cell Standby Fix = More than sufficient for me..
I run kt747 most of the time but my phone doesn't like it much. Tried faux and it was OK. I wish there were more choices. I had siyahs kernel on my gs2 and I loved that one. I see there's one for the i9300 but no att love

Ktoonsez's kernel awesome battery and no problems that i can tell
Stock
9-5b toonz
red s3 ocd 2.1
Faux's. It's the only kernel for this phone that I know of which has no issues and just works, stable, at super fast oc speeds.
I really want to try kt747 once some of the bugs are resolved.

I still can't find one that let's me move apps to the SD card. This is really driving me crazy. I tried "highonandroid" rom which switches the internal and external cards but had problems with some apps from the google play store telling me there was not enough room to download so I am back to stock.
Thanks

Why is moving apps to the sd card so vital to you? I'm not trolling, i'm curious. We have a ton of on board storage and big app installs go to sd anyhow.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I am not speaking about the internal SD as to me this is just my part of my phone internal storage that is filling up fast. I am speaking about the external SD card (mine is 32 gig). On all my other android phones (Atrix and Galaxy Note) I could us a program called Apps to SD and move some of my apps to the external SD card. We can't do this with the S3 because of something Samsung did and I am looking for way to do this.
Also, could some please post a link to Ktoonsez's kernel. So many are using it I would like to try it out.
Thanks
Kt747 is in original development, there's like 6 threads yu can't miss it.

I guess it's going to be repetitive to say this right now...but +1 for ktoonsez kernel
ktoonservative+underclock 96-1188+undervolt+noop=orgasm
Faux's jus got works and has no bugs or issues. It's better then stock and ocd up to 1.8.to fine tune you should get system tuner.
Kts kernel last time I read the thread seemed to have e a lot of bugs but seems to have great upsides also. I hope that most the issues get resolved soon as I really want to try to oc to 2ghz and play with gpu oc also
But If you need something that's as stable as stock just better.. Get Faux's

[Q] disadvantages of CM9

What is the disadvantages of CM9 ??
Camera quality isn't as good and slower to take photos, interface is a bit laggier than a stripped down stock gingerbread, battery drain can be worse depending on customisations and tweaks, some apps run slower/graphics can be jerkier/Mobo player is buggy (an ICS issue)
Advantages are AOSP interface, higher app compatibility, ability to install application data to the SD card and many more

I think the battery is quite good. Because mine can hold even almost 1 day. You should wait for 3 - 4 cycle charge before you can complaint about the battery issue If you just flashed rom. About the other I can say much because I don't use gb rom very much.
But for me cm9 is good fast smooth and stable for me

You should at least try using some GB roms before coming to a conclusion
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda premium
I think the strength of cm9 is in its ability to hold large amount of Apps without lagging like stock does.
The one and only thing I can think of is the fact that there are too many different choices you do not know which suits you.

If you want to use GB roms then use RebelROM something like that... simple like GB Stock but more reliable and transparent and it has no complaint.. i use just a month and then join ICS

I used a whole bunch of GB ROMs for the W before eventually settling with CM9 again after thinking it was giving me battery drains since CM9 provided a cleaner and smoother interface also better gaming experience than any of the GB ROMs provided.
GB is alright but compared to ICS and CM9 its not as good if you do alot of gaming since I found even the best GB ROM has more lag than CM9 gaming wise.

GB battery life better than ICS and JB?

I'm obviously not a 'dev' but is there any reason that the software that makes up GB compared to ICS allows the battery to last waaaaay longer, I am in the middle of the unbricking/rooting process and just playing around on the GB for a day and I noticed this? While on ICS it would be at 70% after just 2-3hrs or sometimes less % so what in your opinions allows for this and is there anything from GB software that can be used in unison with ICS or JB ROMs to allow for better battery life, maybe this makes no sense and it obviously doesn't for me either just wanted to ask this?
Thanks
I used to run the CM9 and CM10 builds, as well as the carrier ICS. I can tell you that my phone is more stable, and the battery seems to last longer under GB. Everything I need works in GB.. So until there is a version of android that doesn't crash my phone I will stick with GB.

Its odd hey and I only wish that some devs could work out why, maybe than some how work it into the ROMs so we don't have issues such as ICS?
The reason is simple in ics it fully utelize the processor thus using more power.

All I can tell you is this. When I first got my phone in May it came with GB, I would only get four hours before needing a recharge. Very upset about this I did research and found I was not alone, this is actually how I found XDA So I purchased an extended life battery and finally could go all day on a charge. Then I got brave and went through the unbrick process (because I was dumb and upgraded to v10j). As soon as I started running cm my battery life doubled, then after official came out I found it equally impressive with battery life especially after disabling fast dormancy. However I would be willing to try GB out again for a few days to see how my battery life is and in comparison.

UPDATE: Well I messed up when I was pushing the gb images over and BORKED my phone lol. Oh well I should have a replacement by the end of the week.
JB is little better than ICS.
Therefore GB > JB > ICS on my opinion.

That means ICS consume more? I found my phone always get random reboot and battery drains on cm9. I think i will back up everything and move back to gb and give a try again.

I would try one of the stocks, v20f or liquid nitro. They will give you better battery life than GB, cm9, cm10. After all this FUD above I put GB on my phone for a couple of days and couldn't even make it through the day. Screen on power is MUCH higher on GB and that is why. This is also what I experienced when I first for my phone in May.

Stable fast ROM for wife

What ROM is the most stable and fast ROM she likes extra features and likes touchwiz. She says here phone feels slow and wants it to go faster. Any suggestions I know I could just go flash some roms and test them but she can't go with out her phone to long
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda premium
Feels slow? With 2GBs of RAM there should be literally no slowness whatsoever. I haven't experienced a single bit of lag or stuttering
on either of the stock images. Either her expectations are just too high, she's got a defective device or she's got too much going on. So far as I hear though the AOSP ROMs seem to be a bit faster than stock, but not by much.
I found BlackJelly to be great in those aspects it also has a dark theme so that can help with battery life. (;
I've switched over to AOKP which I also find stable, smoother (more so than Touchwiz), lots of customization, and nothing but android!
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
If she is keen on having TouchWiz, check out the threads over in android development. Inverted apps can also help improve her battery life. Lastly, custom kernels such as KT747 can aid in battery life and performance.
The phones not slow but the launcher lags big time even when installing nova or apex its weird it just started doing that. Everything else is fast
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda premium
I'm just going to flash aokp and see if she likes it thanks for the replies
