Guys this is my last attempt at trying to find the problem with my DHD before sending it to the repair shop—and by repair shop I don't mean an official HTC Reseller which is not available in my country!
Here's what I've been facing for the past month:
Without any warnings, my phone started making weird noises
(interferance sound, as if the signal is very poor) during every phone-call, and dropping the call 1 out of 3 times, when connected to the 3G network. ([Edit] Even when I get 4 bars of 3G reception)
If I set my phone to GSM only mode, the issue disappears.
Also during browsing (or any internet use) the signal keeps switching from 3G & H and by doing so the data connection is EXTREMELY slow(and sometimes non-working).
After trying multiple radios(with their ril's) and different ROMs.. and finally switching to a stock rom(and radio), as well as trying other sim-cards/different network, and still having the same issue over the 3G network; I'm starting to believe it is a hardware issue.
Before I send it to the repair shop (and risk getting back awkwardly put-back phone) I thought I'd try one last time here..
Any advise is greatly appreciated..
Looks like a hardware problem. Does everything work fine with wifi?

Nothing wrong with your DHD. It's your provider. The area wherevyou live is probably not well covered with 3G since you said you have no issues switching to GSM. If you don't have any WiFi issues then it's not a privlem with the phone or the ROM. It's bad 3G coverage regardless of the provider

Everything works perfectly--including WIFI--except 3G.
I really hope it isn't a hardware thing, but now I'm 90% sure it is!
I took the phone to the only official reseller of HTC phones in Lebanon.
They told me they'd rather not open the phone up since they've had bad experiences doing so before.
They said issues with the touchscreen usually surface after reassembly.
After googling it seems the gsm antenna is in the sim cover; septate from the 3G one (which i couldn't find any pictures of where it is in the phone)

1. Don't panic.
2. As I explained before, I'm 99% sure it has nothing to do with hardware. Do you know someone with the same or similar issue?

I've tried different locations :/
As i said before, also prior to all that, it was working fine..
I tried my Sim card on a different phone and it works just fine.
I tried a different SIM (same and different providers) the problem persisted.
Still, i really hope u're right!

Hi guys,
After weeks of waiting, i finally got my HTC One x today.
But there is a problem.
When i put my Sim Card in , I get around 2 Bars of signal, and then it goes away and the cross comes over the bars, then the phone says ' Preparing Sim ... ' , then the 2bars appear again, then they go away and the the phone says ' Preparing Sim ... ' , and on and on and on and on again!
I am extremely sad and dissapointed. was really looking forward to this phone.
Can anyone help with this issue?
P.s. the phone is stock and untouched.

even i am having the signal problem when compared to my other phones. Nexus sits on full signal and One X keeps moving between 1 bar and 5 bars when holding in hand..have checked the display phone in my local shop which is also behaving same....do all of you have this problem?
I had problems with a cut mini-sim. Got it replaced with a proper micro sim and all is fine.
M.
For the people who have cut there SIM card, make shure you are using the new generation SIM card. Cutting a old generation one can bring issues!
That's weird. My one x is getting signal where my sensation had none!

Woke up today, no signal and sim couldn't be found.
Was fine last night.
Either T-Mobile deactivated it because they have sent me a new micro sim, the phone is a dud or somehow the cut sim decided to break itself over night somehow.
If the new sim doesn't fix the problem, the phone is going back and ill just buy something crappy to tie me over till GS III.
It has good wifi reception, I'm getting signal in places where I'd have to wave my hands around in the air before. But the gsm signal is really annoying me

none of you have my problem . My is faulty. no reception at all.
Mine jumps from H 3 bars to G (gsm), back and forth. Very sketchy signal.
Using a new micro sim I received today.
Hmm.. I'm using a cutted SIM and it didn't show any problem. Instead, I am getting signal at dead spots compared to my DHD in the past. Weird..

Got a microSIM sent out by my provider. Works fine. I'm getting even better 3G reception than with my Desire S. Sounds like a faulty sim to me.

Strange behaviour you guys are having there. My signal strength on the same telco has been improving switching fr DHD to HOX. Some places with weak signal reception those day in DHD (with 1 or 2 bars) now I could get 3 bars.
Most of the users in my region do not faced such issue, we are seen the coverage is jumping fr H to 3G back and forth rapidly, which we believe is due to service upgrade (cos have been notice such behaviour even in DHD)

I have exactly the same issue with you.
Actually this is my 2nd OneX, the previous one has "yellowish display", but there was no signal reception problem.
After replacement, I found the new one has the same problem described by you. It changes between 3G<->H quite oftern, and I found that mobile radio goes off very often, but then it's showing me "preparing SIM..." and signal comes back again!! Since my SIM on the previous OneX has no issue (at least I used it for 4 days already without this problem), so I don't believe my SIM is the root cause (and mine was the official micro SIM from telecom).

Yes, I agree that for some location that normal phone doesn't have any reception signal, OneX does have signal. And it also changes from 3G<->H quite frequently.

I'm having this issue too. It seems when the phone is trying to talk on 3G instead of H, it doesn't work. So, everytime the signal switches to 3G, I lose data. I still haven't been able to run a successful Speedtest.NET test on the phone.
Anyone have any ideas?
Also gave my HTC One back to supplier. Signal issue became so bad that i had almost no signal.
I found that when i was in a building my signal disappeared. Hold your device upside down and you get better reception. Also made a benchmark test when I got the phone and it score 4700+
when the signal issue started i did a test again and it only scored +/- 3700. Must be hardware. I tried Hard resets and nothing....
Going to be a long wait as I'm in Namibia in Africa and phone was ordered in UK. But overall just an awesome phone !!!
So I phoned tmob up to request that I be opted out of their orange 2g fallback when there is no 3g signal as it was causing my phone to totally disconnect while it switched over. Very annoying as it could take a good few seconds to log back on, causing streams to be interrupted etc. not to mention calls dropping. Anyway they told me its not possible to opt out anymore, but to call HTC to see if there is a setting to allow blocking of orange. HTC said type *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer to enter test mode and switch the phone to wcdma only instead of preffered, to prevent the phone from using oranges 2g network. I'm just wondering if this is any different to selecting that option via the regular personalize menu as this option is there also. I did what HTC recommends and I haven't had the phone disconnecting at all since I called 2 days ago, although now I seem to be using orange 3g and hspa networks along with Tmobile. Maybe this helps people that have the same problem or have tried the regular settings to avoid using 2g in the UK. Any comments or similar experiences please share, sorry if thread is in the wrong section btw!

Quite a useful diagnostic menu. Don't know if that code was previously known
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
There shouldn't be anything different from you selecting WCDMA only via the regular mobile networks screen and that test page.
Where I live has really bad 3G reception for both Orange and TMobile so I have it set to GSM only when at home.

Most Androids have that key combination to bring up that menu. *#*#4636#*#* = *#*#TEST#*#*
I have exactly the same issue with my Xiaomi Mi-One. Always dropping signal when switching, really F***ing annoying. I can't get t-mob in my house, so it reverts to orange then I look at the phoen sometimes and signals gone, also happens randomly out my area. Sometimes have to restart phone, sometimes it fixes itself. So annoying. 2G in my house seems fine, but as soon as I leave and switch to 3g it loses signal, takes as an age to reconnect as well.
I know this is a thread for T-Mobile / Orange but I am having this issue on Three as well, wonder whether it effects all networks or just networks that use more than one carrier. Three has its own 3G network but it uses Orange 2G signal.
I am wondering whether it is the switch between these networks which is causing it to lose signal and not reconnect, just as you guys are experiencing on T-Mobile / Orange.
I have had several instances where my signal has an R next to it as if it is roaming, this would be when it is connected to Orange 2G network, I never had this problem on my Desire HD or Sensation.
Does anyone know of any issues on Vodafone or O2 regarding signal loss?

I had it at first too with my cut- simcard (with a special cutter). After that i thought that might have caused the problem, went to vodafone and they gave me a new real micro-simcard. After that I didn't have the problem anymore.
Might be a coincidence but maybe it helps

Thanks, I have already tried this with Three, still no better I'm afraid. Might try returning phone for a replacement and see if that helps. Not holding out much hope tho.
Simpler option:
Settings
Mobile Network
Network Operators - and select your original network. It won't roam then onto any other network.

Unfortunately as I'm on Three, they class both 3G and 2G as their network even tho they use Orange network for the 2G side of it. The phone doesn't see any difference in carrier whether is 3G or 2G. So in this case your suggestion won't work.
Thanks for idea though.

Its a strange one.
Ill keep an eye on mine, although those in my local Three shop insist that the roam to Orange has been switched off UK wide now…

If you dial *#*#4636#*#* on your phone and select phone info you can select GSM only which is 2G, as Three don't have a 2G signal this must be Orange?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
*#*#4636#*#* is a nice trick and solves my problem, but as soon as i restart the phone it reverts back to WCDMA preferred? How can i make it to stay on GSM?
I don't think you can keep it on GSM only. Always switches back for me as well.

Hi, anyone else noticed this strange behaviour:
I have noticed when signal is low and there is no 3g/H data connection the signal drops out completely randomly. Switching of data connection brings it back to life!
Then if I check the phone idle power usage it reports 0% of time without a signal? Anyone else had this?
NB. On Vodafone UK

Hi. I am on three network UK and since I had the m8 from new, have had intermittent signal issues. One minute I will have 5 bars then it will drop to one bar while I am still in the same place. This is my second brand new m8 now with the same problem as the first. I also have a moto g on three to compare it to, and the reception on the moto g is far more stable. I can't find any posts from the UK of anyone with the same problem. Anyone else having signal strength problems? It affects signal as a whole as in both calls and data.
Im with 3 and have intermittent signal issues but thats nothing to do with the phone or network provider in my honest opinion.
Are you running a custom rom? Might be a radio issue?
Thanks for reply. I am still on stock at the moment because I didn't want to have to un-root and return to s-on etc. While I wasn't sure what the problem is. If you don't think it has anything to do with the phone or the network provider, what do you think it is? As I say, my moto g signal is far better and stronger. I don't get signal on the m8 where I normally have done on all my previous android phones. Thanks for any more input.
I'm on 3 and also have ****ty signal strength, yet I'm able to make and receive calls without issues.
Tbh I think it's an issue with three.
I was with Vodafone back in the day, and use to have full bars yet intermittently I was unable to make/receive calls.
3 appear to have some Gremlins, but after using almost every other provider, oddly they're consistent.

Thanks for reply. Tbh, I have been trying to not take too much notice of what the signal strength bars are telling me and just trying to use it anyway. But it just seems strange to me that I have only just started seeing this happening since I got the m8. As you say, three have been consistent, and for me, they have been consistently good. I now find the m8 not having data connection and no bars where before, other handsets are fine. Oh well. Thanks for your reply.

Hi. I have sent mine in for "repair" now, but am not holding out much hope that it will be working any better when it gets returned from HTC. I am in Hereford, west midlands.
Got the same, now on a second device thanks to the local thieves;anyway both handset's had the signal bar observation you made in the post.
So I'm guessing it's 3's network.
I'm in South east London.
Data & voice are a bit hit & miss

Thanks for reply. I think what i'll do when I get my device back, is to try a few other networks sim cards and see what happens. Perhaps I should have tried that a bit sooner but as I never had trouble before, it didn't really occur to me that it could be the network not playing nice with the phone. Thanks for all the replies guys.
I've been noticing signal problems too with three. I'm in Northern Ireland. I tweeted them and they said they were aware of a mast issue near where I live.

I had been with 3 UK for about 5 years and a couple of years ago I had a Desire HD and I was experiencing the same exact issues except sometimes the signal would get lost completely and even airplane mode or phone reboot would not register with the network again but since then they have improved the network (a little), I can tell you there is nothing wrong with your phone or the radio. 3 have great deals but their coverage is very patchy I am now with o2 UK and have not had any problems with reception or dropouts. one more thing; a bad simcard can cause reception issues so you might want to try another sim from 3 to see if that helps at all.

I have exactly the same issue however it doesn't seem to effect the usabilty of the phone. I had a Note 3 before which also suffered the same issue so I would assume it is Three.
I think Three are in the midst of a big 4G switch on and from what one of my pals in the store said they are doing a hell of a lot of work on the masts at the moment. I do however have a more consistent signal with the M8 with regards to signal stability (not the bars)
You may want to look at getting an app which measures the actual -db rather than bars. It may be that you are swapping between a couple of masts.
Have a look at Opensignal or this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.signalmonitoring.gsmsignalmonitoring

I have been trying not to take too much notice of the bars and just use it anyway but it still doesn't seem to be working as well in certain places, as my other handsets have previously on three. Oh well. I just took out another 2 year contract with three. I'll see how the network performs over this time and make a decision when the time comes.
