So there I was, riding a bicycle at work and like a badass that I am,I decided to go hands free. Well, some mysterious force decided that idea wasn't going to work out today and down I went. Got a few scrapes and bruises, nothing major but my phone.....oh dear. Like any loyal phone, it took a hit for me and in exchange it gained nothing more than "thank you" and a completely broken display. (I'll post some pictures tonight when I get off work). Anyhoo, I turn to you guys as to what I should do from here. I have a few ideas but not entirely sure which would be the cheaper/faster solution:
1) I am with T-Mobile and my headset insurance transfered over to my GN. I could send it in for repair which I'm not entirely sure T-Mo will honor my phone and pay a deductible. I imagine its somewhere around $150
2) Purchase a $180.00 display from Amazon and repair it myself.
3) Report the phone as lost (not sure how well that will work)
Thats all I have in mind as of now. Please guys, need some desperate advice. Cannot go without my GN :crying:
I would try to go the insurance way first and if you don't like what they say about it, they'll probably give you an estimate or something, go to option #2
Option #3 is actually insurance fraud and I would be careful to even post about it...
I'll give them a call later and get an estimate. My only hope is that it wont be too much. As far as the lost claim, thanks for that info. That was actually a suggestion from a co-worker didnt know how it would even work out.
How about a sale price. I could sell it on eBay and buy a brand spankin' new GN. The phone boots and everything, its just the display thats completely gone. You reckon I could geet ~$100 for parts only?

I doubt you will be able to earn much from a broken Gnex on ebay. Best bet would be that you "lose it" you know like, riding the bike and it slip from you. If you want to go legal, check how much it would cost you to send it to their repair center. Usually it's around 150$ (that's exactly how much it costed to me last time i broke my phone), but it might change depending on your carrier, why it's broke, etc. I would say that you try to change the screen yourself on a last chance hit. Pretty complicated and if you have broken connector in phone, you will pay for nothing.
Wouldn't reporting it as lost be insurance fraud or something? Don't do that
So turns out Asurion doesn't cover it. After being told by T-Mo initially when I first got it that It WOULD be covered, I now get a no. Paying Premium Headset Protection for nothing, magnificent. My only options right now are to sell it for parts, I find ~$100 a semi-reasonable price seeing as how the display is only $150 ish.....250 for a fixed GN is not bad. I would then be purchasing a brand new GN...
For the curious:

I'm posting an update with the intent of helping others who may run into my situation, where the insurance company doesn't directly cover the GN.
So after going through days of complications with Asurion, much more than I typically care for, ( 3 Claims, multiple faxes due to them "not receiving them" and a week and a half of calling them every day) I finally managed to get them to somewhat cover the loss. Since the beginning they could not find the GT-i9250 model anywhere on their list of covered devices and they always insisted on the Nexus S, which is worth considerably less than the GN. I had to get in contact with a claims adjustor which could only give me a phone comparable which is completely understandable. They gave me the option between HTC Amaze 4G and the Samsung SGSII STANDARD (Whatever that means?). I ended up going for the GSII which I will be selling to buy another GN. I just miss my GN that much
Would the SGSII STANDARD be the i9100? Because the image they showed me did not look anything like the T989 (T-Mo SGSII).

Here is what my Desire is doing:
It's under warranty, so I contacted HTC Tuesday. They recommended sending it in. They filled out the 'tick sheet' wrong, their error. I need it corrected to continue. Five phone calls and 15 emails later, I now have the correct paperwork, but they are refusing to cover shipping to their repair center. They blame UPS for not operating here in Jersey. That's between UPS and HTC. My contract is with HTC, I'm holding them responsible.
The warranty (Section 9c, yeah, I save and read everthing) agrees they will cover it. I can use Royal Mail, obviously. Getting the device in for repair is not the issue.
Has anyone had problems with HTC in getting your device repaired?
What did you do to resolve it?
I like the Desire, and I'll probably buy another HTC in the future. I have 4 from them so far, but this is my first problem and it's not going very well.
You should inform HTC that they have a responsibility for shipping regardless of who operates in a particular country. Other than that, if it's still in warranty you can take it back to where you purchased it from (or notify your mobile network of the fault). They hold ultimate legal responsibility for getting a repair (unless you waived them when you signed a contract). I remember when Amazon insisted that I use my warranty with the manufacturer (who also wasn't willing to pay for shipping) and then sent Amazon, that as a seller, my contract of exchange was with them and that they should provide a replacement. In the end, they didn't want the faulty item back and just sent me a new one.
Good point kabads,
I've sent the seller (Amazon) an email asking them to handle this from here. I found this gem on an OFT website
"The trader must sort out your problem, not the manufacturer
Remember, if you are entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or compensation, it is the trader who must sort out your problem. The trader cannot tell you to go back to the manufacturer or to claim through a guarantee or warranty."
It seems that HTC is the logical choice to handle this, but they are dragging their feet. The warranty people can't fix a mistake on the returns form once they email it. They supposedly 'escalated' the issue after email number 16 and agreed to arrange a courier to pick up. Now, no response for 2 days. I'm done babysitting them and forcing each step of the process. I think they are used to doing this and having a certain percentage of people give up and go away.
** BOOM, Update!
Amazon has already written back while I was typing this post. Full refund, no problem. Contrast this with HTC's shambolic response this far. I'll order a replacement and I'm done with these morons.
Now I have the problem of choosing a replacement. Do I gamble on HTC again, or go with a competitor? I guess it doesn't matter much so long as I order from Amazon again.
I know its odd, but I would still get a HTC, it is really bad customer service true, but the phones are really good. Just use Amazon to return the phone, I think having a broken desire is a bit of bad luck to have to return it.

I would go for a nexus s, I would love direct google love and the specs are very good. I dont know how long u could wait, but the dual core phones are just around corner, thats the way to go in my opinion.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yep dual cores are nearly here although HTC wont be getting them until toward the end if the year supposedly. But on the other hand I probably wouldn't be able to go without a phone for long so I'd get either another HTC or maybe a nexus s because of the higher spec, glad you got your refund some companies are really stubbern GO AMAZON !

MFW dealing with Amazon:
But seriously folks, I'm back using my trusty G1. I'll definitely order the next one from Amazon. They don't have the Nexus S, or I'd order one today. They no longer have the original Desire in AMOLED, like the one I'm returning. Amazon's selection of Android phones is fewer than usual right now for some reason. Maybe newer ones are coming soon. Looks like it's wait and see for now.
They have the Desire S, might be worth a look
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HTC-Desire-Free-Mobile-Phone/dp/B004NNU9YM
And Nexus One is there, just not direct from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/GOOGLE-Nexus-One/dp/B00332YPHQ
I bought a Galaxy Nexus from Clove.co.uk back in Nov last year and it has been a nightmare dealing with them and trying to get warranty replacement.
First of all they charged me VAT even though I am in New Zealand and I have to send them a couple of emails to get a refund but instead of reversing the entire transaction and charge the correct amount on my credit card (which is what mechants should do normally according to visa) they processed it as a partial refund which incurs additional conversion charges plus different exchange rates and leaves me 50 dollars short. (If they had accepted paypal instead of charging directly on customer's credit card this would be no problem)
When I recieved the phone, I discovered severe color banding across the entire screen(two vertical black lines). I know minor color banding is common in SAMOLED(didnt happen on my Galaxy S 1 though) but after comparing the screen with my colleague(hes ordered a GN from clove as well) I believe the screen is indeed faulty and send it back to clove (I have to pay for the return shipping charges)
After a long period of wait and even several phone calls (They only reply to 70% of my emails and I have been without my phone for about a month which is annoying) to their UK base (thanks to time difference I have to stay til midnight for them to open) I was told that they wouldnt issue me a replacement and my phone is to be shipped back.
Not sure about you guys but I am done with clove.co.uk, I wasted more than a hundred dollars (extra) on those idiots and ended up with a faulty phone. Wouldnt recommend purchasing anything from them ever again.
And I wouldnt even go into details of how they promised to have "taken extra steps to ensure the volume bug is not present on the phones they ship" and I have to wait for a bug fix because (un)surprisingly the phone I recieve does have the volume problem and they refuse to exchange it citing incoming firmware.
REMEMBER THEY DONT ACCEPT PAYPAL FOR A REASON (so you have no one to cry to when they f you in the ass).
Look at the f*ing screen!!!!!#$%#$%#%
And clove claims there is no problem?!#@!

Good advise but GN probably wouldnt arrive in New Zealand until 2013 or something.
Just a warning to potential Clove customers.

Talk to your bank and they will refund the money you lost through exchange rates
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
The bank will only refund the conversion charges, but there are some discrepancy in the exchange rates as well which they wont refund (as they calculate refund and purchase using two different exchange rates.)

Not relevant to the OP, but for anyone else - it's been available in Aus since December.
No offense, but this is the whole reason I actually waited patiently for it to arrive on our shores as opposed to ordering from the UK, all is well until something bites you in the butt and you have to deal with someone over the other side of the world.
I am surprised douche bags like clove.co.uk actually has any returned customers, oh well good luck as long as you dont have to deal with replacements!
I ordered two phones off clove and they were both opened, probably returned stock which had not been advertised. Returned, but was big waste of time. If buying from UK I advise reputable companies like amazon.
Those guys do sound dodgy....

My question is a relatively simple one... I sent away my desire hd to this company
http://www.htcphonerepairs.co.uk/HTC-Desire-HD/Housing-Replacement-Desire-HD.html
... to have the housing replaced, to make it look like new again. It arrived back in the post today, however there were several what looked like screwdriver scoring marks around the flash cover (see pics below) - that as well as the lense was loose and caused the phone to rattle!
Obviously I sent it back to the company under warranty immediately and they agreed to resolve.
My question is this... is it difficult to fit a new housing to the DHD without leaving marks? Also should a replacement housing cause the lense to be loose or was it just bad fitting by the repair company? Has anyone else had their housing replaced mark free?

not sure if it is that easy to do it yourself but hey, someone is selling it on eBay
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ORIGINAL...AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item3cc296c7de
2 things...they were not careful putting on that cover...or worse...used the old one again, maybe by mistake. the reason I say that is it looks like pry marks from trying to get it off. not that hard to put on all new case etc. that particular cover is tricky but with care should go on no problem.
I spoke to the company earlier this morning and they were very apologetic... should have the phone back again hopefully tomorrow morning... will update then.

There is plenty of youtube videos that explain how to do it. I don't like their work, if you watch the videos you can see that flash housing can be removed pushing from the inside and not externally with screwdriver.

Good to hear, thanks for that... will see what happens when my phone gets back for the second time.
The plot thickens - received an email from the company earlier this morning, asking me to call them re the work on my phone.
They informed me that most if not all "replacement housings" from the manufacturer, come with some minor blemishes and or marks (this was after a 10 min rant on my behalf about this being bulls*it)
Can anyone confirm this to be the case? They even said that replacement housings for sale on ebay are probably gonna have some minor marks on them already...
This is mostly true at least the part aboot ebay but if they're coming from the manufacturer they should be in new condition.
When I bought one on ebay it was described as having minor marks but it arrived to me in new condition.

This is BS, blemishes from the manufacturer? Are you serious? When you first bought your phone did they have any blemishes? OEM parts from the manufacturer are spotless or they never get used by HTC manufacturing! I'd ask for your money back, buy your own housing from Ebay and do it yourself.

Ooops forgot to update this thread! My phone arrived back for the second time, and although much better than the first attempt, the housing still had minor marks both front and back... NEVER using this company again OR recommending them either... they never even apologised the 1st time around, and never got a refund for my duplicated posting costs!

My S3 screen has been cracked for a while and I think it's time I replace it.
Samsung charges like $200 something to get it fixed even though everything works perfectly.
Can anyone here recommend a company that will replace it? Are these services reliable?
DeviceJack on eBay looks promising but wondering if there were any others people thought were good.
Does the display and touch screen still work? Just the glass is cracked?
If they don't work, its a very easy thing to replace yourself. There are plenty of vids online that can help.
You can get the LCD/digitizer assembly (already attached to a new housing) for roughly $100, sometimes a good bit less. Then all you have to do is move your motherboard and components from the broken one which is very easy to do.
You could also buy a used device which has at least a good screen then all you'd probably have to do is swap in your motherboard and that's it. These are often cheaper than the assembly I mentioned.

Replacing just the glass is extremely hard and tedious as the super AMOLED screen is glued to the glass, and to peel the touchh part off the frame is rough also, i tried it with a broken screen, i would recommend as doc has, its 5-6 screws to remove the back cover, 1 screw to take the -+board off, and 4 plugs maybe 5, it would take about 10-20 minutes total.
If its just cracked glass, but everything is still functioning, you should read the thread about replacing it in the General section, then make the call yourself if its something you want to try. It may not be the easiest thing to do, but it can save you a ton of money. Ive done it myself with pretty good results. Saved about $75-100 by doing so.

I don't have a temperature gun to do it and dont trust myself honestly lol
Do these EBay services basically provide the same thing? Found one for ~$40 I forget
Not all will be the same. Id ask to be sure what methid they use. $40 is probably as good as it gets, but check up on thr seller first. Most charge more than this so it does make ne wonder how trustworthy they might be.
As for the DIY method, a thermometer would be nice, but most people, including myself, dont have or need one. In the end it boils down to how comfortable youd be though. Nothing wrong with getting it serviced by a shop.
Oh, and make sure they guarantee their work. Also write down your serial number, IMEI, etc, and reverify it all when you get it back.

Most cities have a number of shops that will perform that service. No shipping costs, no waiting for shipping somewhere and back again, plus if dealing face to face they are less likely to be shady in their business practices.

I am having the same problem with this seller (AutoStereo).
My auto DVD is under warranty, I had problems with the operating system and can not solve with the seller.
Good morning, I also bought an android radio in this company, and they have also deceived me, first with a tracking that did not have any transport company, but it came to me, that if it worked badly from the beginning, and since yesterday it no longer has sound, I have read a lot, it hurts not to have looked before, and to make the purchase through Paypal, I bought in Aliexpress and we will see why they asked me to remove the dispute and remove it and now I can not put another one, time has passed, like this That we will see, do not buy from it, sure scam.
I have also bought a car stereo from them. I have chosen the right one for my car and paid it via paypal. They asked me for my car model and told me that it is the wrong model and i should have to pay another 150$ to get the right model. I said that i will cancel my order and buy the right one. The said, that would take too much time ich should pay them directly to their paypal account. I did not do that. Then they gave me another link with the exact amount of the price difference and told me to pay this link. I paid it via paypal and three weeks later i recieved the car stereo. It has been the wrong model. I contacted them and said i want to return the stereo to them and want a full refund on both payments. No reaction. I open two disputes for the one product. They contacted me and said, if i gave them a 15 star review for both payments, they would fuly refund me when i return the stereo. Time passed, nothing happened. When you remind them on their promises they only answer with "ok"
I opened two paypal cases for this stereo. They refused to refund me, because if you have two payments for one product there is no buyerprotection.
Now i have a stereo that does not fit my car, lost a lot of money and the seller once more scammed another customer.
Do NOT buy anything from them!!
Good afternoon, I forgot to say that they also have another name, AOTSR, and they also appear on various sites, Amazon, Ebay and Aliexpress, they are the same Zwnav. Now that I continue with the problems, the last thing they have told me is that I broke the team, of course they are scoundrels.
OH WELL too late for me , i purchased it soo expensive and no replies. before used to said, " email the engineers" im sure the engineer is a lab rat that never replies.
i messed up my ZLINK and the Zwnav. dont even respond .
i wanted to downgrade to android 9 but never helped .

I had a sad experience with ZWNAV,too!I paid 2 Media players Tesla style 4GB+128Gb ROM but they sent 2 Media players 4Gb+64Gb ROM for Ford Mondeo,2017,SYNC 3,without informing me what he send, they motivated that what I paid I do not go on my car!!!They was mounted by the specialized company and the surprise and more unpleasant was to see that it works only partially!
Does not work bluetooth, does not work radio and does not show information from CAN !
About a month I still talk to them to me the correct firmware for my car and refuse under various pretexts, these guys lie as they breathe!(contact person Irene Zhou)
And I'm of the opinion not to buy from the company ZWNAV, are completely out of trouble, do not care about customers after i have tricked to buy from them!!!
