I don't know if we have found this but we really should find a way to reset the flash counter to 0 maybe we should get a bunch of devs and really figure this out.

Isn't this an option in CWM? What does it do?
Ya why do I need to do that?

They really don't do anything about the warranty when you flash things. I have sent back many, I just make sure to 100% return to stock before you send it back.

As far as I have heard bring it back to stock by flashing via Odin therefore removing root and cwm. Then you should be able to send it for service as many have already done.

A few days ago, i sent my phone in for a warranty exchange. I unrooted the phone, but for some reason the boot logo never went back to stock. I also never could reset the flash counter because i do not have access to a jig. I had 3 days to get it sent in and i was forced to send it in without resetting the flash counter. Does anyone know what T-Mobile will do? Are they going to charge me any money??

No. It'll most likely get flashed to stock.right when they get it . I have sent phones in with counters and wrong boot logos such as mytouch and have never been charged.

I had to send my hard bricked SGS2 in for warranty exchange, it was still rooted even. They sent me a new one no questions asked. Most the time the techs who are doing the reflashing don't really care if you're rooted or not. Worst that could happen is they charge you, though I would say your probably on the safe side.
I sell cell phones for my job and I can tell you most employee's won't even know what rooting is if you told them. When I returned my Galaxy Nexus it was hard bricked and had the bootloader unlocked, but they had no idea.
I sent back a sensation fully rooted with a custom rom still on it and had no issues. I would not worry about it.

For future reference they say you have 7 days but you actually have 60 days from the date UPS ships it. They will bill you the non return fee after 30 days but they will credit it as long as its within 60 days. If your pushing it with the cutoff but made it get a printout showing you dropped it off.
Hope this helps

Am I the only one found this hilarious lol
I just got my galaxy s2 a month ago and was wondering, if I get a hardware defect or brick, will Tmobile replace It as long as its the first year on contract? That is what happened about 4 years ago with my other phone but I would like to know if Tmobile will still do this.
Thanks

Rooting voids your warranty. If they can *see* its been rooted, you will be charged a restocking fee of $400+
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
It's best you go through Samsung, from eat I've heard, as they not really check if you're phones been rooted

Well...i got mine about a couple months. They told me they could replace the phone only if phone has not been software or hardware modified..as i understand...only if they see phone is like when they gave it to u @ very first time. There is a way to restore ur phone and unroot it. So make sure u dowload the .tar file and keep it in PC in case u need to flash stock rom...via Odin before send phone to replace it....or any other similar situation. Follow the link at the bottom.
If u pay insurance Samsung will replace ur phone even if its stolen or lost. In that case u have to pay $150 in order to get a new one. Sorry about my english. ...just trying to help. Good luck.

I've heard of T-Mobile replacing the phone at the cost of the $130 for Tier 3 Smart Phones, but Samsung replacing them? I haven't heard of that.
Hmm...I voided my options the day I got mine, Lol.

I bought the insurance.
Thing is,everything in writing,it seems nothing is covered.
I spoke with tmo,and the insurance, and they both said "no matter what happens (excluding rooting/roms) "
Is covered. But in writing, nothing they said seems to be covered.
From my understanding tmo will replace the phone if its less than a year. But tmo is in financial hardship so who knows what they will do.
Im still waiting on a $30 credit for stuff I never purchased.
Forgive my English...
But,Im just illiterate.
Just go back to stock.its easy.

Samsung warranties their devices for 1 year, it has nothing to do with tmobile. Return your device to stock and get a new one if there is a problem. If it's hard bricked tmobile cant tell what you've done to it, anyways. They send it to sammy and they jtag it and it goes back into circulation as a refurb.

But note, the flash counter is only changed when you flash roms through Odin. Any roms flashed through Clockwork Recovery will not add to the counter. Just adding on to what you said.

This is somewhat true. Some custom kernels such as cm kernel can add to the counter even if flashed through CWM.
Touche to the posts made by the community. Good work.

Check your counter, sometimes it trips and sometimes it doesn't. Very simple to check yourself, as no one can tell you what's on your phone

I will be sending my phone ot samsung repair due to LCD issues but wanted to know if anyone has answer -
if the phone has stock image + root + NO TRIP COUNT INCREASE and status = Normal, does it still void the warranty as its ROOTED?
Anyone if has the same confi and have used the samsung repair please let me know
I just want to be sure so that they dont come back saying that phone is not covered due to warranty breakage...?
Why dont you just flash back to stock to be safe?

I don't believe so...
But if your problem is just with the lcd why not flash it back to stock first just in case?
Also.. What's wrong with your lcd if you don't mind me asking.. Is it a defect or something you did?

It got dropped it ....
My 6 months old Galaxy S2X Hercules seems to be having the infamous sticky power button issue.
Phone would sometime shut off and then vibrate every 3,4 seconds..
I took it into a samsung corporate store and they say because I rooted the phone I've voided the warranty and they cannot fix it without charging me 60$+ dollars even though the problem IS HARDWARE related not SOFTWARE.
Is there anything I can do at this point ?
I can barely use my phone because of this problem.
What is an s2x?
Why don't you bring the phone back to complete stock? Worked for me with warranty.

Is there a thread that shows step by step on how to "unroot" the phone?
Have you bothered to look in the dev section? If it were hard to find I would link you, but it's not so I won't

The s2x is the Canadian version of the t989. Basically the same thing. And I don't think he can go back to stock because it keeps rebooting constantly- > he won't be able to flash anything

It's quite possible to go back to stock, you just need to not touch the phone at all to risk the power button sticking again.
I had the exact same problem as OP, and I was able to go back to stock using Odin. Just take out the battery and then hit vol down and plug it in to the usb on the computer.
Then he should be able to go back to stock and then return the phone, they shouldn't charge him if it's under warranty.

So I convince my sister to let me root her phone after showing her my awesome phone. I get all the files and prepare for the Odin flash but when I go into download mode on her phone everything says custom and she has a flash count of 7. Weird thing is that her phone isn't pre owned and I can guarantee that her phone has never been rooted or had anything flashed on it. Anybody see this before?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Not I. The only way to trip the counter is to flash anything but official firmware via odin.
You sure it wasn't a refurb, or used and repackaged? Unless she got it direct from T-Mobile or a Wal-Mart type store, this is very possible.
Sent from my SGH-T999L using xda premium
That's the weird thing, she bought it straight from tmobile. My sister has no idea how to do any of this stuff so I know she didn't root it before.

Yeah but it kind of makes me curious what would have happened if she ever needed a warranty replacement...
