Weirdest thing ever.. - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So I convince my sister to let me root her phone after showing her my awesome phone. I get all the files and prepare for the Odin flash but when I go into download mode on her phone everything says custom and she has a flash count of 7. Weird thing is that her phone isn't pre owned and I can guarantee that her phone has never been rooted or had anything flashed on it. Anybody see this before?
Sent from my SGH-T999

Not I. The only way to trip the counter is to flash anything but official firmware via odin.
You sure it wasn't a refurb, or used and repackaged? Unless she got it direct from T-Mobile or a Wal-Mart type store, this is very possible.
Sent from my SGH-T999L using xda premium

That's the weird thing, she bought it straight from tmobile. My sister has no idea how to do any of this stuff so I know she didn't root it before.
Sent from my SGH-T999

Maybe it was used for batch testing? I kinda doubt there's any way to get to the bottom of this one...
Sent from my SGH-T999L using xda premium

Yeah but it kind of makes me curious what would have happened if she ever needed a warranty replacement...

Warranty Exchange

A few days ago, i sent my phone in for a warranty exchange. I unrooted the phone, but for some reason the boot logo never went back to stock. I also never could reset the flash counter because i do not have access to a jig. I had 3 days to get it sent in and i was forced to send it in without resetting the flash counter. Does anyone know what T-Mobile will do? Are they going to charge me any money??
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
No. It'll most likely get flashed to stock.right when they get it . I have sent phones in with counters and wrong boot logos such as mytouch and have never been charged.

I had to send my hard bricked SGS2 in for warranty exchange, it was still rooted even. They sent me a new one no questions asked. Most the time the techs who are doing the reflashing don't really care if you're rooted or not. Worst that could happen is they charge you, though I would say your probably on the safe side.
I sell cell phones for my job and I can tell you most employee's won't even know what rooting is if you told them. When I returned my Galaxy Nexus it was hard bricked and had the bootloader unlocked, but they had no idea.
I sent back a sensation fully rooted with a custom rom still on it and had no issues. I would not worry about it.

For future reference they say you have 7 days but you actually have 60 days from the date UPS ships it. They will bill you the non return fee after 30 days but they will credit it as long as its within 60 days. If your pushing it with the cutoff but made it get a printout showing you dropped it off.
Hope this helps

Tmobile manufacture warranty?

I just got my galaxy s2 a month ago and was wondering, if I get a hardware defect or brick, will Tmobile replace It as long as its the first year on contract? That is what happened about 4 years ago with my other phone but I would like to know if Tmobile will still do this.
Thanks

Rooting voids your warranty. If they can *see* its been rooted, you will be charged a restocking fee of $400+

It's best you go through Samsung, from eat I've heard, as they not really check if you're phones been rooted

Well...i got mine about a couple months. They told me they could replace the phone only if phone has not been software or hardware modified..as i understand...only if they see phone is like when they gave it to u @ very first time. There is a way to restore ur phone and unroot it. So make sure u dowload the .tar file and keep it in PC in case u need to flash stock rom...via Odin before send phone to replace it....or any other similar situation. Follow the link at the bottom.
If u pay insurance Samsung will replace ur phone even if its stolen or lost. In that case u have to pay $150 in order to get a new one. Sorry about my english. ...just trying to help. Good luck.

I've heard of T-Mobile replacing the phone at the cost of the $130 for Tier 3 Smart Phones, but Samsung replacing them? I haven't heard of that.
Hmm...I voided my options the day I got mine, Lol.

I bought the insurance.
Thing is,everything in writing,it seems nothing is covered.
I spoke with tmo,and the insurance, and they both said "no matter what happens (excluding rooting/roms) "
Is covered. But in writing, nothing they said seems to be covered.
From my understanding tmo will replace the phone if its less than a year. But tmo is in financial hardship so who knows what they will do.
Im still waiting on a $30 credit for stuff I never purchased.
Forgive my English...
But,Im just illiterate.
Just go back to stock.its easy.

Samsung warranties their devices for 1 year, it has nothing to do with tmobile. Return your device to stock and get a new one if there is a problem. If it's hard bricked tmobile cant tell what you've done to it, anyways. They send it to sammy and they jtag it and it goes back into circulation as a refurb.

But note, the flash counter is only changed when you flash roms through Odin. Any roms flashed through Clockwork Recovery will not add to the counter. Just adding on to what you said.

I wouldn't know what happens if you're going through T-Mobile but I assume you'll be fine if you're polite and explain you don't know what's going on, insist you've been with T-Mobile because of their excellent support if they make a big deal about it. Asurion the insurance company working with T-Mobile will take it anyways because they just fix it and that's it and resell it. And because you pay a monthly bill they're making money off of you regardless and you still have to pay a deductible.
But you SHOULD really return to stock.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 4
If they see that the phone is rooted, they'll just simply do nothing for you. That's why people say "your warranty is now void".
Do what is mentioned above or take your chances and hope the T-Mobile rep that is assisting you doesn't check to see if the phone is rooted or check the flash counter.

I rooted my phone once, but I will never do it again after what happened. Last year I rooted my GS3 and about a week later, my local T-Mobile store called my phone unexpectedly. The guy on the other end told me I was due for a price drop, but I would have to come into the T-Mobile store to sign the paperwork before it would take effect. 2 days later I stopped in to get the discount on my monthly payment. The T-Mobile employee said he would have to look at my phone just to verify that it was the correct serial number. He went into the back room and said he would be back in a few minutes. 10 minutes later, a police officer walks in the store and asks my name. I'm totally freaked out wondering what the deal is. He asks me to turn around a puts hand cuffs on me. The officer told me I was under arrested and being charged with "rooting a mobile device". I was booked and released, but I would watch what you do to your phone. Good luck.

Rooting a device isn't illegal. They can kiss my ring. Think about it, if it was illegal why are root apps allowed on Google Play? And also, why is XDA not been shut down?
Methinks something else happened there. Maybe you voided their warranty and tried getting a discount which may be against the rules. Or something. But I know for a fact this is legal. Unlocking is a different story however.
So my advice, root on my brothers it's the only damn freedom we have left here in America.

Rooted tmobile S4 - Insurance/protection plan question

If I get the UVUAMDL file that you flash with Odin from the computer and take the root off, will they accept the phone or can they still see I voided it somehow? I pay 10 bucks a month for tmobiles premium handset insurance plan... I cracked the glass so I'm assuming I'll have to file a claim....
Another question, do they send you the new device first? Or do you gotta pay the waiting game with them?

That won't reset the flash counter, but it will unroot it.
But if it's with T-Mobile, I don't think it will matter.
And they usually send out the phone first.

Yeah T Mobile sends the new phoen first. Then you have like 7 days to return your old phone or they charge you $600 for it. But they'll send you a return case and everything with prepaid shipping. Just slip the old phone in there and put it in a UPS box. They are really easy to work with on stuff like this.
I have no idea if you really need to reset teh flash counter or not, but it's insanely easy to do it so you may as well. Do a search for Triangle Away by Chainfire. You just get back to complete stock rom and recovery through Odin, root using CH auto root, install Triangle Away and run it, and it will reset the flash counter. Then uninstall the Tiranlge Away app and go to the Superuser settings and click "complete unroot" (Or something like that, I forget what the term for it is, but it's obvious)
You will now have a phone with stock rom, stock recovery, no Superuser APK, and a flash counter that says 0.
I just did it last week. Took me all of 10 minutes to do the whole thing.

Use CF Auto root by Chainfire to root phone.
Use Triangle Away to reset flash counter (TA need root hence step above)
Open SuperSU app and choose "Full unroot". It will remove SU binary and SuperSU app.

It installs as a user app though, so a factory reset after this would wipe the app out anyway.

Why does everyone get warranty and insurance confused? When you file and insurance claim it does NOT matter if it's rooted, if you bricked it, or dropped it in water. You're paying the $175 deductible sobit doesn't matter. If it was a warranty exchange THEN you would have to return to stock since they only charged you $5 for an exchange.

Yup. If you broke your screen you are paying the 180 or whatever for a new phone. May as well tell them you lost the phone and keep your cracked one for Battery and what not. Even a good back up phone.

It will not work as a backup phone. The IMEI will be blocked.
Also, while I get what you are saying and understand you are trying to suggest the most cost effective way to do something....what you are suggesting is insurance fraud and could be a felony.
Im not judging you because I agree the insurance company is dumb for making it advantageous to lie aboit what happened to a phobe. Im just saying you are advocating a crime. XDA tends to prefer that you don't do that here.

I didn't meant to promote insurance fraud. I just always at least keep battery and when micro sim cards came with the phone 4 years ago. Figured paying 180 for a new phone should cover that but I get what you mean

Thank you. I knew I wasn't looking for a warranty exchange cuz I cracked the screen too... So I knew I was gonna have to file a claim, and it does cover whatever you do to it, so it does make sense that messing with the system like that wouldn't matter. Thanks again. I don't even run custom roms, the s4 rooted is fine too me.
