[Q] Arc S become very hot - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My girlfriend has an Arc S, and when she plays the phone becomes hot.
The phone is stock. (locked bootloader ....)
Would it be better to unlock the bootloader, to unlock like mine?
I have an Arc S also debrand, unlock bootloader ..
My Arc S virtually no heat.
Thank you in advance for your response.
(sorry for my english, I'm French ...)
Sincerely TheCrowNambourg

Is your girlfriends phone rooted? and if so has she overclocked her CPU? if not it probably has something to do with her CPU being damaged or glitched

Thank you for your response.
Not his phone is not root, and not overcloker either.
I have not done anything on it, at least not yet. lol
Since it is still under warranty, can be a return to sav?

return the phone if its still under warranty and unmodified and get it replaced with another Arc/Arc S

you can't overclock processor without custom kernel, and can't install an custom kernel without bootloader unlocked.

it is normal to become hot because the processor is hight demand.

So it would be normal as it is boiling?
A return guarantee would be necessary?
thank you very much for your response.

its normal for tha Arc to become very hot from the upper of the back i have the same phone so dose three of my frinds and all have the same proplem it gets very hot when you open wifi or internet in general or play games or make long calls on the phone but switching the network to GSM only and reduce brightnes of the screen to about 80% and turning off wifi help reducing the heat

My Arc S doesnt get hot at all and i have CM7.2 flashed and underclocked, this might help your girlfriends problem
-root phone
-install a custom kernel (may not be needed for underclocking)
-underclock the phone (reducing heat on the phone, not recommended if you play 3D graphiced games)
that should make it less hotter... hope this helped

Ok, thank you very much for your answers.
Since it plays a Kinectimals, it is not advisable to underclocked?

it is still recommended to root and install custom kernel and rom just to make it less hot.. of course, dont forget the better battery life too!
i'm using jj hybrid with arcknight kernel and ever since, have not really notice any abnormal amount of heat while using the phone as compared to last time using stock kernel and rom

My Arc Pure White also hot near camera area when gaming and use in long time. I still use stock firmware 2.3.4 build .42 and still warranty.

arc s getting hot is a normal thing when browsing or playing games or using 3G..it is not abnormal..people who says their arc s doesnt get hot at all probly never played any games..so guys chill...any hardware will get hot if it is under stress..

Yes, it becomes hot... You don't even know how much after overclocking. It's normal, don't worry.

On cm7 it never got heat up but on gb and ics mainly while charging and gamingbor both it become to hot near camera n i think its common not an issue
Reducing kernal speed to 1 ghz mayb the solution bcz in cm it is the default speed

When my cpu/phone gets hot i starts lagging very much ... never happend on sgs1 and sgs2 do i have a faulty hardware : ondemand noop latest franco and modaco 4.0.4 beta 2 but happend on any rom...
a guy from a gsm service told me that galaxy nexus bootloader register anything i change to my phone and told me even if i reflash STOCK firmware from google they`ll find out that i changed kernel etc and will void my warranty
i used a programe named stabilitytest from the market and after 1 hour my cpu temp is 43degree and the gpu bench has massive frame drops from 20 :| fps to 1-2

That's bull****, he's just trying to scare you. If you think you have a problem, re-flash a stock ROM and kernel, re-lock the phone and send it back.

Don't think your phone is getting laggy because its getting warm. You probably have some serious problem happening that's causing your CPU to be overworked, causing the phone to be both laggy and warm.

You should be flashing back to completely stock to see if its a user-created problem or a hardware fault... That's what I would do.

so i use Galaxy Nexus ToolKit 5.3 then i flash latest google stock firmware? im used to odin))) then i relock bootloeader
You dont have to relock the bootloader...just load stock rom and test.
ok so i went to stock rom did a quadrant and an antutu when the phone was cold , i did several tests and when the phone started heating all scores lowered an example:antutu cpu float 1631 to 900 800
i used a stabillity test app and cpu heats to 45 degree very laggy should i go to change it? gta laggs insane and sometimes is smooth
i would flash to stock- completely (not rooted, no data on phone) so it's like you're unboxing it for the first time. if it heats up, you've got a hardware issue and should send it back.
or just send it back and get a new one that's shinier than yours.

[Q] Defy+ Temporary bricking due to overheating?

Yeah, got a major issue: My Defy+ is overheating and I usually end up with a blocked phone, which ends up being useless for about 4-5 hours. And it's becoming more often.
I have 2.3.4 on it, but I seriously doubt 2.3.6 solves this issue.
Any tips?

Try custom ROM's and DO NOT flash 2.3.6 full sbf as it's quite buggy and you'll be stuck with it.
You could also try to undervolt the CPU. In what conditions do you get an overheated phone?

How could I do that?
Also, I get it for no reason whatsoever. It gets overheated and that's it. I left it to cool about 4 God damn hours, and yet when I open it it works a bit, then it gets stuck. It's as if the memory isn't well processed.
To give ya an example, I left it over night and even charged it. Everything went fine. Then, got to school, got a break, wanted to listen to a song. Fine, listened to a song. A guy wanted to waste some time on Opera Mini with his Ikariam game. Fine, let him waste that 1 tab and browse online.
But then, when he gave it to me it was stuck.
Wait a lot of time to stop it via Android's button, did it eventually. Left it to cool 2 hours, tried again. Again, after less than 3 minutes of usage (wanted to share a file via bluetooth, but got to the folder only) it got stuck again. This time it was pointless, 30 minutes later I wasn't able to stop it so I took the battery off.
I kinda don't know if I should change it or still have faith in it.
Right now stuff seems worse. Sometimes it reboots itself, but that doesn't help with anything IMO.
BTW, would the 1% battery patch help? Might put that 720p functionality in there as well.
As Auris said, try flashing a custom ROM (CM7.2 is a good choice, stable and fast enough). For undervolting (if you are on a stock ROM only - because CM7 has a built-in CPU manager, accessible from the bootmenu) ), install SetVsel from the Play Store. Like PC overclocking/undervolting, be careful about the values you choose. You'll find a thread in the General section about SetVsel values.
If these ideas don't help you solve your problem, I think it might be hardware related.
Trimis de pe Defy CM9
My defy+ gets really hot on just about everything except stock! Undervolting didn't help, nor underclocking. Putting it in the fridge temporarily helped, but when I started using it again the temp climbed again!
What should I do? :-/
Sent from my Defy+ using Tapatalk 2 Beta
Well, since you flashed custom ROMs (unlike the OP), how about the baseband? I remember that when I flashed CM7 for the first time I didn't get 3G signal and the phone was overheating because the signal was too poor for the baseband that I used. Switched between a few and finally managed to get one with good signal and 2G/3G/3.5G working fine.
I never use 3G, so I've never bothered changing it. By the way... what are the differences between basebands with the same frequencies?
Could flashing a different kernel solve it?
Sent from my Defy+ using Tapatalk 2 Beta
Well, there are different regions - I don't know the technical details, but maybe some basebands work better with certain network operators. It's a trial&error method, you could choose one that works better or one that performs worse.
Regarding the kernel: I have no idea about the heat dissipation, but from what I've read there is a GB kernel that supposedly has better battery life. Ask Auris, he uses it (it's the kernel by walter79).
Okay, seems the issue solved itself, since now it works perfectly :|
I didn't play a game, which was kinda retarded: low quality, a simple Android game, and playing Temple Run/Angry Birds/ Angry Birds Space didn't give you me any issue.
I don't get it.

Xperia Play Temperature over 40°

Hi guys, i gotta an Xperia Play with some... trouble.
When i play (even Angry Birds! xD) it goes on 40°C, only DeadSpace made him go on 42°C, it's hot!
What happened?
I know that there's something wrong, but what can be?
I tried with another battery, it became hot the same way but a little less.
I was using a custom kernel, overclocked to 1.4ghz, but now i'm back to the origina rom, i have also relocked bootloader, but nothing changed.
Can i send it to Sony assistance now that i relocked bootloader?
Thanks a lot
Hmmm¡*¡*sounds like some electric leakage's shown up on your r800i mainboard,
1 ) Hey. it's the SUMMER time now, check if your ambient temperature is high to cause this 40^C temp.
2 ). if not reason 1 then let's say a power leakage on the mainboard, which, usually followed by much shorter battery standby time than before.
3 ). if 2 ) is right, especially if the standby time is abnormal, then sending back to Sony for repair is suggested...
---------- Post added at 04:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:20 PM ----------
BTW. once you unlock your phone, Sony Will keep a record of your r800i. Remember you had submit unlocking request to Sony site?
yeah Sony had your IMEI in record.
If you didn´t put the settings back from 1.4 ghz to 1.0 ghz than thats the reason why it´s so hot. I never used overclocking tools but when you play around with it i think settings are not stored on the internal memory. Did you change the kernel by the way?
Sure, all stock, rom and kernel!
I've unlocked the phone throught the Sony guide but the fact that i've the bootloader unlocking code doensn't mean that i've used it, i've relocked bootloader so my question is: can they know if i've actually unlocked it?
Ambient temperature is under 40°.
Battery seems to have the same lifetime than before but i see that Voltage is 4.1V instead of 3.6V!

BTW, if the battery standby works fine then I do think there is no need for a repair. You got a healthy machine and that¡®s all.
Seriously, I think it normal to hit 40 degree temp in summer, and there is no need to worry about it
You may actually check your system info when you feel hot, and probably you will find the battery temp is only 26^C, ¡«

1. i've dropped my phone plenty of times with 'barely there' cases, and it works fine
2. yes it's normal
3. you can with a certain app, but I'm not sure what it's called Some apps however wont have widgets working if you use that app though. i think it's called link2sd or something
Thx for that info bro...

1 - If you bought phone to drop it, you have really gotten something wrong.
3 - No, that's all you got. Adding it is close to impossible, due to high-tech electricity parts and stuff.
If you really want more internal memory you could partition your sd card and make it as internal memory...
How do i do that?

1 - It will still work... But Case is made of light plastic and will easily suffer cosmetic scratches and cracks.
2 - Yes... Any Smartphone Runs low on battery fast when playing HD games.
3 - Nope.
I'vr dropped it alot and it still works fine, I might have damaged the GPU or something like that, because my phone is laggy, but that's probably just software problems.
Camera is also worse, which is sad, and I don't think it's software fault.
My screen saver (the original from Sony) is very scratched but the screen is perfectly fine, no scratches.
Many phones get hot when running heavy games or tasks and when charging, and games usually drain battery faster.
To increase internal storage you could remove unnecessary system files, but be careful with that, or you could partition your SD-card (class 8/10 SD for less lag)
use my mod from dev section to increase internal memory
on stock roms it works awesome an everything works even widgets
dropping is no problem
heating does not happen when on stock
on custom roms it heats much

[Q] to upgrade or to root

Hi, I am having a dilemma as titled. I am getting increasingly frustrated by the low RAM and poor battery life (with hot phone) of my Xperia S (on B.1.96 latest firmware). I use Whatsapp a lot and it couldn't keep itself in memory if I launch/run Chrome at the same time. The push notification is still there but it will load again to get into the conversation page. Does custom ROM provide much better memory handling to allow better management? My Nexus 7 feels just fine even both devices run on 1GB RAM (of course Nexus 7 has more cores, but I think it doesn't affect memory management.)
Living in Malaysia, where temperature is generally higher also doesn't help the phone, which gets hot very easily. It gets hot easily and drains battery - I could get something as ridiculous as getting 5 minutes on screen time but already went through 40% of the juice after half a day. I don't believe there is anything to do with stupid background apps as I screen my apps pretty vigorously on their efficiency and most of them are inherited from my older HTC Desire - which has no background apps problem for me. I believe it's definitely a firmware issue but I am not sure how much can custom ROM fix in that department?
Should I upgrade? My current shortlist will be either an Xperia Z1 or a HTC One. I still admire HTC phones a lot and the One certainly does very well to impress me. My main concern is on its aluminium as I'll definitely opt for the black option, it may reveal scratch and scuff very easily. Z1 looks to be an impressive phone but I am slightly worried with its increased size and weight. I always try to handle phones in one hand to see if I could drag down the notification bar without reshuffling my fingers and the HTC One is as probably the largest I could take. But the extra battery, on-screen button (a plus for me) and water-resistant ability keeps me pretty interested (especially Sony Malaysia is bundling the dock together).
Will rooting and custom ROM solve my frustration? Or I am better off upgrading to a proper flagship?

That is one of the options but how much improvement it warrants? It baffles me that the Nexus 4 has twice the mileage my Xperia S could get - sure there's hardware and firmware difference and 300mAh difference, but it still does not make much sense to me. The Xperia S has not had good battery life and I must keep it charged whenever I have the chance.
