Epic Touch Blog: Temporary Stock E4GT from emmc
Utility for CM9 Epic Touch
This is a temporary ROM that boots Samsung's Gingerbread EL29 firmware entirely from emmc without making any changes to the ROM currently installed on your phone. When you reboot, you return to recovery where you can re-flash the ROM to return to CM9. This temporary ROM is useful for several purposes.
Update Profile.
Update PRL.
Sprint Activation.
Dial codes and diagnostic mode.
This should be helpful to users of any AOSP-based ROM including CM9, AOKP, etc.
Thanks to noobnl and mkasick for making this possible!
Really nice thanks a lot.
Awesome can't wait to test it out

Would this work to flash .zip updates (such as kobridge) or updated ROMs (such as alpha5)?
This definitely will come in handy, can I suggest seeing if you can get a video made of how it works. I can honestly say It seems to help out quite a bit in this forum for a lot of people and does cut down on the crazy questions.
Great job though!

You can use the directbootCWM file to update CM9 yes. Not sure about using it for Kobridge tweaks.

Its for AOSP roms. You currently can't update PRL/Profile, activate your device, or use dialer codes on them so this temporarily allows you to boot stock el29 off the SD card without changing your current rom. You can do what i said from there. Saves you time from doing backups, restoring, etc.

I'm hoping that someone can help me out as I am unable to boot into the temporary ROM. Here are the steps I followed:
1. I have everything extracted to emmc as directed.
2. I flashed directboot CWM utilizing mobile odin which correctly booted me into CWM version 5.0.2.7
3. I flashed boot_EL29.zip at location /emmc/multiboot/EL29 and received the following messages that appear to be correct.
Finding Update Package...Opening Update Package...Installing Update...Boot /emmc/multiboot/EL29/zImageCreate mount symlink.Remount partitions read-only.(Re)mount /emmc read-only.Unpack kexec.Load zImage and initramfs.Sync.Reboot into zImage.Install from sdcard complete.4. At this point I expected the phone to reboot into the temporary rom; however, it just shows the standard recovery menu. No reboot occured.
5. Because no automatic reboot occured, I selected "reboot system now" from CWM. Unfortunately this just brings me back into directboot CWM.
Thanks in advance for any help provided.
I am having the same problem I thought it could have been the downloading or unpacking so I downloaded it again and unpacked it and still have the same problem.

This sounds pretty cool and I would like to test it... what I don't understand is when I'm done with the temp rom, how do I get back to AOKP? Do I need to reflash the whole AOKP rom? Just the kernel?

When done updating prl/profile, etc. Just reboot your phone and it will take you back to cwm recovery. From there you can either just reflash the rom or just a compatible kernel so it boots.

I'm going to ask a noob question, since I stay in the shallow water normally with sfhubs one clicks. Could you provide a little more detail in how we use / install this?
Would I ODIN this directly from FF02? Or do I first ODIN FF09 from the one click (data or no data), then ODIN your kernel?
Second question would be, with your recovery included within, could we flash Calks, your rom or Blu Kuban's rom without brick fear? Can we nandroid with your recovery? I'm a little fuzzy on all these recoveries now and which ones are safe, which ones are useful, etc.
Thanks for your time. I appreciate what you do.

We keep his kernels in the updater, I flash with them all day, you need to be aware of what it is you're flashing cause you may unknowingly flash an app or something with that format() command which is what wakes that ugly superbrick Galaxy killer.

Well recovery is packed into the kernel, you can not use the same kernel for both operating systems lol. The phone simply will not boot a GB kernel (linux kernel 2.6.x) with an ICS Kernel (linux kernel3.0.x).
For flashing from ICS i am on CM9 so i just use the safe recovery thats been in the nightlies for awhile, alpha6 as well. TWRP is available for both TW and AOSP i believe. Agat's recovery is available for TW etc.
I think the question you should have asked is which ICS recoveries are safe? Keep in mind a zip with an unsafe updater binary is not safe on a safe recovery except those like TWRP that replace the updater binary when flashing.
Thanks, I'm learning a lot the last week this is def cool learning all of this. Thanks. I didn't realize the kernel was part of the recovery. I come from the Evo 4G and things were really much simpler.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah the recovery is packed in the initramfs of the kernel on our phone.
I won't say yes but, Agat recovery had allowed me to backup, restore, flash ICS to ICS and even wipe. i am not going to mislead you but it had worked for me everytime. I hard bricked using other recoveries in ICS. Agat is my recovery of choice. I would wait if not confident... Word on the street is that source code is out.

Throw some of the stuff you remember about the evo out the wind and keep an open mind about learning how Samsung works. I came from the evo as well and believe me you made a good choice. Learn odin it can be your best friend. Also pick up a jig just in case you need one, they are only a few dollars on ebay.
Good Luck

Not to nitpick but I think you meant you can't boot a GB ROM(not kernel) with a ICS kernel or a ICS ROM with a GB kernel. And also you can, I've seen 2.6.x kernels booting ICS frameworks, it just requires some mods.

The CM9 ROM has all EMMC erases disabled so it is technically "safe". And I believe that there are a few instances where TWRP doesn't manage to replace the update-binary.
Since Garwynn is busy with FL24 and N2 kernels at the moment I decided to make this one too.
I present the GA10 Repack Kernel with new recovery tRec_0.3.2.
This recovery has been compiled with CM10 (JB) source and works better with JB roms/OS.
The repack is not perfect yet but it can be used as daily driver as is.
I'll continue working on it and try to fix remaining bugs.
I didn't run many tests on this but since I've used same methods and same recovery it should
have same problems and also same thing should work.
So I guess you should be able to make and restore nands, flash zips etc.
If you discover new bugs let me know and I'll try to deal with them as they come.
Here is the link:

Hope this will work for you guys.

Sorry.
I'll run through a few of the usual tests tonight if I can and more tomorrow.
Hopefully someone else can run some too. Like to see if I can get a full restore from 'zero' - full X2 style formats from ROMs to ROMs etc..
Either way I'll post the results.
Thanks again Agat. Your dedication and support is amazing!
don't keep your expectations to high.
It should be pretty much same as FL16.
Only difference would be that you will have kernel from the build you running.

Did you have 'Wipe Dalvik' checked in Mobile Odin? I've seen that cause that for me. I don't select that when flashing kernels. After successful boot with new kernel I've had no problems using that option.

So far:
Installed via Mobile Odin with no problem.
All apps working - again so far.
Wiping cache and Dalvic cache from recovery works
Created backup (It seems quicker by the way. MD5 generation took longest)
Verfied md5 (with AFV app).
Installed a few zips from recovery with out issue.
Haven't done a restore yet but will later.

Well, I thought for a second that this repack didn't have the same apps on sd issue as previous releases, but then I realized that I had done the power off/power on test with the cable still attached. After removing from charger and powering off/on I have the same issue as before.
