Epic Touch Blog: Temporary Stock E4GT from emmc
Utility for CM9 Epic Touch
This is a temporary ROM that boots Samsung's Gingerbread EL29 firmware entirely from emmc without making any changes to the ROM currently installed on your phone. When you reboot, you return to recovery where you can re-flash the ROM to return to CM9. This temporary ROM is useful for several purposes.
Update Profile.
Update PRL.
Sprint Activation.
Dial codes and diagnostic mode.
This should be helpful to users of any AOSP-based ROM including CM9, AOKP, etc.
Thanks to noobnl and mkasick for making this possible!
Really nice thanks a lot.
Awesome can't wait to test it out

Would this work to flash .zip updates (such as kobridge) or updated ROMs (such as alpha5)?
This definitely will come in handy, can I suggest seeing if you can get a video made of how it works. I can honestly say It seems to help out quite a bit in this forum for a lot of people and does cut down on the crazy questions.
Great job though!

You can use the directbootCWM file to update CM9 yes. Not sure about using it for Kobridge tweaks.

Its for AOSP roms. You currently can't update PRL/Profile, activate your device, or use dialer codes on them so this temporarily allows you to boot stock el29 off the SD card without changing your current rom. You can do what i said from there. Saves you time from doing backups, restoring, etc.

I'm hoping that someone can help me out as I am unable to boot into the temporary ROM. Here are the steps I followed:
1. I have everything extracted to emmc as directed.
2. I flashed directboot CWM utilizing mobile odin which correctly booted me into CWM version 5.0.2.7
3. I flashed boot_EL29.zip at location /emmc/multiboot/EL29 and received the following messages that appear to be correct.
Finding Update Package...Opening Update Package...Installing Update...Boot /emmc/multiboot/EL29/zImageCreate mount symlink.Remount partitions read-only.(Re)mount /emmc read-only.Unpack kexec.Load zImage and initramfs.Sync.Reboot into zImage.Install from sdcard complete.4. At this point I expected the phone to reboot into the temporary rom; however, it just shows the standard recovery menu. No reboot occured.
5. Because no automatic reboot occured, I selected "reboot system now" from CWM. Unfortunately this just brings me back into directboot CWM.
Thanks in advance for any help provided.
I am having the same problem I thought it could have been the downloading or unpacking so I downloaded it again and unpacked it and still have the same problem.

When done updating prl/profile, etc. Just reboot your phone and it will take you back to cwm recovery. From there you can either just reflash the rom or just a compatible kernel so it boots.

I have been trying to update to the ACS custom recovery 1.0.0.4 but every time i try this in the ACS updater application it starts to download zImage, then gets to 99% and reboots my phonne. It doesnt go into recovery from there and the same version of CWM i was using is still the recovery system.
This has happened across 3 different roms i was trying (acs srf 1.2, and ERA rom, and bamboozle 1.1)
I would like to know iof this is a known issue, how i can get this work work, and if there is a flashable zip that i can use to install the custom recovery myself.
Interesting. I have been testing the recovery for like 2 months. I just thought it was labeled wrong because I am on 1.0.0.3. Let me try to get some info

Hey guys, I'm looking into this issue now. Not sure what caused it to just stop working.... I'll get back to everyone when I have an answer.
As for the zImage file - that's the recovery. It downloads into to your sdcard, then uses bmlwrite to write it, and then reboots.

Alright, great news everyone - got it fixed. Just uploaded to the market, give it time to reach you. Version is:
(Free) 1.5.0.3
(Donate) 1.5.1.3
I apologize for the issues... not sure how it went so wrong when it worked in testing.... I tested both versions though, all is good.
By the way -
I was able to do the following:
ODIN to stock
Root with One-Click
Here's the best part - even if your one-click does NOT install a custom recovery - you can still install it from the app. After I did ODIN / root, did not have to touch computer at all.... Installed recovery, then kernel, then rom, all from app.
Once again, I apologize for the issues.

I just saw this thread, but I have ACS Updater (Donate version 1.1) - I only use it for backup and restore and it works perfect - I don't understand this "stops at 99%" thing, but now you guys got me scared to update to the newest version.
One thing that is strange, I had to look up acs updater in the Market Place before I found you could update it - the Market Place never gave me a notification that there was an update until I saw this thread

Nope. One clicks don't work on 2.3.5. You need to use Odin to install CWM 5.027, then pull the battery before it boots, power up into CWM first then flash a custom GB ROM.

Why not just have him install the gb3.tar kernel instead of "pull the battery before it boots" much easy and less fearfull.

No but it qbkings tutorial he says to flash the kernel first.... then flash Cwm just saying it would be less chance of error. Something in the stock kernel has a script that searches for cwm and causes it to delet after the first boot anyways.....

Exactly! And no worries about it overwriting recovery as long as you flash a custom gb rom (there is a mostly stock one if trying to stay stock) as the kernel will be included with the rom... don't let biggorn scare you... its not scary to pull the battery after odin ;-)

Flashing a custom rom.... and a custom kernel.
Suggestions: legendary 2.2 and the samurai or shadow kernel
MarcusantRom revival v2..... just go through the android development forums to see which rom you'd like to use. Just be careful what your trying to download thought. If your Rom is BML or MTD then you have to download that type of kernel.

qbking77 has a 2 part video on it that is very step by step. just follow it and you will be fine. from what i remember just 1 extra fie to odin and you need a file on your sdcard. it was pretty gravy. have fun and mistakes are a short odin back to the beginning
edit.
haha forgot there was a second page..... use remember you can go from bml to bml, or bml to mtd, mtd to mtd type roms. YOU CAN NOT JUST FLASH FROM MTD TO BML!!! you must odin back to ec05 and make sure repartition is checked and use the victory pit. happy playing
just remember though... after reading the information on these forums, and you are still unsure or whatever... ask questions, ask questions , ask questions...

So since i purchased my beloved phone few months ago i was a truly happy camper....
...until latest ICS happened.
Now the phone is lagging freezing when some apps crash unlike before where crashing app would not freeze the phone for minute or so.
I followed suggestions and performed full reset but it helped for just a moment. Now my phone is worse than anything i had a chance to us before including my previous vibrant which i had to root to make it usable.
I was searching on the web other people opinions and could not find lots of complaints. Maybe it was just too early. Anyway i am rolling back my phone to previous OS version.
What a piece of c*** this ice cream update is? I am starting to have a feeling they are doing this for purpose so you start thing about upgrade to newest latest phone that could carry that useless burden with bunch of bloatware on board and all the bugs they embedded into this new update. It's kind of funny yet sad...
All of the people who have been complaining about TDJ's ROM - which of course is very early in its life - should have to run the stock TMO ics before they are allowed to speak.
I'm having very good luck with his UVLE1 based ROM and it will just continue to get better. Can't see ever needing to go back to GB - at least in my case.
Thanks TDJ for the great ICS experience.

Check out AOKP or CM9. AOKP is in the general section while CM9 thread is in the dev thread. Both stable enough for DD's.
Also, that thread won't tell you how to root your phone. You have to do that before you start flashing ROM's etc. Check this out first: Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650908 AND Post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27360280&postcount=123.
Rooting your phone won't give you a new ROM, you have to flash that after rooting.
I'd review it a few times first, and then follow it exactly.
Can someone please tell me how I am supposed to flash rooted stock UVLE1. I used an ODIN in the past bit always with tar files. This rooted stock zip file does not seem like something I played with before.
Just a link to brewing recipe please. Thanks in advance.

There is a lot of reading to do if you are completely unfamiliar. Here is a start.
Ti Backup
You may need to follow these instructions for rooting.
(Suggested) Flash latest version of CWM (Non-touch) here
Nand backup. (Option in CWM?)
Flash Darkside "superwipe" here
Flash ICS Modem from Mr.X here
Flash Rooted ICS from Mr.X here
Instead of the previous step you could flash just about any other ROM here, such as AOKP.
Flash Darkside "cache wipe" here
Reboot.
Restore select Ti backups.
Ti Backup says its for rooted phones. Mine is not.
What now?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
May I suggest you flash tdj's darkside ucle 7.1 . It has been flawless for me.

OK, I flashed CWM through ODIN.
I can boot into CWM recovery.
When I try to select
"install zip file from sdcard"
the menu flashes for a moment and resets into
"reboot system now"
so I am unable move forward. Why is it doing it? Is it because the battery is less than 50%?
Hmm...running stock with silky smoothness. Wonder what causes some to have issues.

Did you download the superuser zip to install after flashing recovery?
Edit: Better yet did you download the rooted stock rom from Mr. X thread? The reset was probably because to selected a location that does not have a zip file.

Follow that. It gets you rooted. Pictures and a video.
TWO STEPS .... That is all it takes!
I got it!
There are 2 (TWO) steps to flash rooted ROM like this one:
[ROM] Tmo UVLE1 & Telus TLLE4 ICS Stock Rooted
which by the way is exactly what I wanted.
STEP 1:
Flash CWM using ODIN (initially I flashed touch version which did not work - so I posted *****ng, after reflashing standard 5.2.0.6 works like a charm)
STEP 2:
Put ROM .zip file into sdcard and reboot to recovery
DONE! THAT's IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just can't believe none of you knew this or just did not care to share... what a waste. Google is best, helped me to find required files for CWM and ROM. Searching throughout thousands of posts on XDA is a waste of time. Unless you are already "rooted" ... to your chair.
I rather go to the beach.
First of all, to make it totally clear how noob Im at this... I dont even know if this post goes in this section, so feel free to move it wherever fits best.
Second, excuse my english, its not my first language so ill try my best to explain what I did
Last but not least, thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this post and tries to help me.
So, I finally felt courageous enough to try a non-stock ROM.
The first thing I did was search for a rooting guide for the Glide on the forums. And I found one that seemed pretty straight forward. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082). I downloaded Odin, the CarrierIQ free kernel, started the phone on download mode, started Odin, PDA the kernel file... and when the phne rebooted it got stuck on the samsung sign.
I think my problem is that the guide was old and for GB devices. I was running the stock ICS.
After that, I downloaded from samfirmware the ICS file (is it the kernel or the rom? <-yes, thats how of a noob i am). Tried to use odin with it, but it gets stuck after a couple of mins.
After searching for a while, I found on another forum that it says that I need to downgrade back to GB, and said to install CWM Recovery (I installed it -v5.0.2.7-). And now im downloading the inception ROM (the same post on that forum said to downgrade using that ROM). Since the download is really slow, Im writing here to see if someone knows what happened and how to fix it.
Thanks!
ICS stock kernal herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31695742
Try that maybe

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I downloaded the Stock Kernel but cant seem to install it. Im using CWM and trying to install from SDCard, but it only shows me the internal memory from the phone, not my SD. I already formatted it in FAT32 format. Same results.
Can I do this via Odin? Any idea why my SD isnt showing?
Cwmr on this phone doesnt see the external sd

Not sure about cwmr 5 but in ver 6 (touch) you can mount the internal memory, use your usb cable and transfer the zip to the phone with your pc. UN-mount and disconnect the cable and then you should be able to find the file to flash!

What option do I have then? Can I use Odin to do it?

Do you have a link for it? The dropbox one I found isnt working... dont know if the CWM is specific for each device, i found others on google, but since they are on another devices forums, I dont know if it will work with my glide....
Thanks for the help....
The other thing you can do is download the leaked ics that it's a Odin one click file that will flash the kernel and boot loader, should get your phone booted back into stock ics where you can get a fresh start. I'd recommend going to Thegreatergood's LiteRom ver 4 or 5 afterwords. At least until Dman gets cm10 going!

Thanks! No, the link is not working (too much traffic for DropBox), so if you have it, i would really appreciate it.
Also, can you point me into the Odin compatible ROM... I downloaded the LiteRom and Kernel, but both are zips, and cant use them with Odin.
ok here is the CWMR v6 its in a zip file. just unzip to your desktop, the tar.md5 file is useable in the pda mode for odin. just follow the guide listed in the CWMR 6 thread.

Tomorrow Ill try to go back to ICS. Will try thegreatergood rom.
Also, thanks.

here is the link to the ics leak. its a 665mb file that will completely wipe all data in your phone. just be careful!

I would also suggest making a backup if the /efs folder on your phone. that folder contains all the imei information that identifies you device to the networks. there is a thread in another forum that uses a tool to easily make a backup and gives the ability to restore! I have never had to use it to restore, but there have been reports on rare occasions where others have lost that information and the imei numbers turned to all "0's" I'm also not sure that you can use the tool until the phone is booted up. here is a link to that thread...

that's great, you might consider making a nand backup using the recovery and also once rooted, use titanium backup!
Well Im finally using the literom and its great. Cwm6 didnt read my sd card, but it allowed me to mount my phone as a drive on my pc, so i made a folder and copied the zips there, and installed from there.
I will try the backup thing later. Im so glad to have the keyboard backlight back!
I was really frustrated yesterday. I have a lot of experience with computers, but not that much with android phones. It was quite an experience.
Thanks again.

Glad you were able to get it going! It's somewhat hard to brick a phone but it is possible, I really hate to see that happen to someone! Over the past years I have found that android is a lot like Linux. Still some differences but a lot alike!

It took me about 3 hours..first time flashing roms in about 2 years.
I bricked but fixed it by reflashing everything in the correct order haha.
I have Kernel 3.1.10-I927UCKH2-CL970642 [email protected]=93 #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 16:55:50 KST 2012
Build number ImM760
My Baseband version is I927UCLG9
Running Android 4.0.4
Rooted
with AT&T service
and the backlight and tethering fix put on it
using the Nova Launcher for my launcher
Dialer One for calls
GoSMSPro for sms/mms
I am unfortunately stuck in the same position at the moment. I stupidly followed the root guide thinking it'd work for ICS and was horribly wrong.
My phone is now also stuck at the Samsung logo and is driving me crazy. Can you give me some instructions on what you did to restore back to GB? Thanks in advance.

I am trying to upgrade my Virgin ROM to the 9.12 build but get a fail upon trying to flash it. The background.... I'm using TWRP recovery and have tried the chainfire root method. Here are the results:
As you can see you can see some conflicting information... all shots were taken in sequence. I'm thinking the fail in twrp is coming from the system not having root but the info is telling me otherwise....
Bump... Anybody???

Do you have the latest SuperSU version?
I'm a little lost at what you are saying.
You flashed a rom, and it said fail, and you think it has to do with Root?
If you have TWRP installed it doesn't matter if you are rooted or not. It's going to over right the system partition regardless if you have root or not.
So it's either a bad download or bad transfer for it to fail.

I do have the latest SU version by chain fire. And maybe I'm doing something wrong the because I am running the virgin gpe ROM now and that flashed in twrp with no issues. Now when I go to install (after wiping) and select the 9.12 update that I downloaded it hangs on trying to open the zip and fails... I haven't changed any twrp settings but in the write options of twrp what boxes should be checked because system is not by default... Thanks for the replies!

You can give CWM a try, I've been using it for a while without any issues. Out of curiosity what version if TWRP you are using? I think most people recommend TWRP 2.5.0.2. I'm using the latest version of CWM.

If all else fails, just start from scratch, get stock UVUAMDL tar, flash it with Odin, make sure to do a factory wipe after you flash it, sometimes bootloops occur if you don't. You don't even have to go past the first screen where you pick the language. Just shut it down from there and boot into download mode and root with Chainfire with Odin, then shut down and boot up again into download mode again and flash custom recovery tar of ur choice with Odin. Then download whatever custom rom zip and install it via custom recovery.

heyyy saw your reply in my thread.
just as @byron1985 suggested there, it sounds like you got a bad download. the flashing scripts are essentially exactly the same from previous version. the flashing process has absolutely zero to do with SuperSU.
edit: re-read. so you've verified the download. if you had success with CWM previously, i would go back to that. i do not use TWRP.

Im going to give the twrp 2.5.2 a try as it seems most of my troubles keep happening on the 2.6.3 build. Hopefully that works either way its back to CWM for me as well. Thanks again for taking the time to help out and again sorry about hijacking the thread for a page... Your ROM is absolutely perfect so I appreciate the efforts and time!,
