This phone is OK. Ice cream is okay. My biggest gripe is the soft keys. I do not understand the logic in it. If your going to give me the soft keys (ie. Back button, home button, recent apps button) then give me my Back, Home, Menu, and search button. Its crazy how unproductive I find myself all because I need to click the top right corner of the screen for the search button, when my nexus s or Droid pro simply had a search soft key at the bottom.
Please tell me there's a way or tweak this?
Here's what I want. The Recent Apps button(far right key) by default should be the search key. Holding The Recent Apps button should activate the Menu button. As with the Home Button, holding it down should active the recent apps button. Its that simple.
It doesn't have to be like that but somewhere along those lines. I really think Google took a step back with getting rid of the soft buttons. Sure it makes phones like the. Galaxy nexus look pretty but I'm trying to be productive here

Its nothing Google did. On my gnex I have 4 soft buttons, search, back, home and apps. The function is still there. HTC just decided not to. Its up to manufacturer. At least with soft buttons they can be changed to add functions.
I was watching a few videos on YouTube that showed some custom roms for the one x and it actually tweaks the soft keys so they act a lot like android devices with four soft keys. I am relieved! Lol

It's everything Google did btw...they changed the button layout in the Galaxy Nexus and have tried to get OEMs to remove the menu button and use the 'Action Bar' instead...blame Google, not HTC
I don't really care whose fault it is. I'm looking for solutions eh

You know what? I am gonna blame Google for this. There was nothing wrong with the soft keys on all android hand sets. Yeah I think the menu keys on the galaxy nexua do look better but they seems impractical and it makes the menus inconsistent
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
The Menu and Search keys are deprecated as of Android 4.0. The reasoning behind it is that they did different functions in every app. With the back, home, and tasker buttons they are the same across the system regardless of what app you're in.

Little awkward coming from the Thunderbolt (Which had home in the first slot) but I feel like this works best.
Oh and of course long pressing home brings up recents.
I have played with this order too. I want to get on board with google and stay away from menu.
What bothered me was when I pushed it, on some apps menu would appear at the top. Leaving me to wonder why I just didn't push the in app menu.

Hopefully I am not too off topic saying it pisses me off that sometimes the menu is located up top and sometimes down low. wtf? This needs to be standardized and quick.

Thus you will always have people modding it to the navigation bar. It is (In my eyes) going to be too in consistent and power users will want a centralized location to always have it available.
I've played with a few different softkey orders (and played with adding the big menu button back), but I keep coming back to the stock arrangement. I guess I'm just boring.

Ive played around with ordering and I keep coming back to the stock setup.

I had it originally set up so that a long press on home showed recents, but the small delay of waiting for the recent apps was quite annoying. It's the little things that bother me apparently lol

Hey guys,
I received my Htc One X today.
It's great and all, I love it, but one thing that really annoys me is the menu button (3 dots) which is placed on the screen and resizes the screen (basically makes the screen smaller) on many games and apps, also, it's almost always visible in almost every app/game - very annoying.
I'd suggest if someone could fix that button, like.. remove the button completely from the screen and let apps use the full HD mode, like they're supposed to - and use a hardware button such as volume up/down (if pressed for like 3 seconds) for it.
That would be great and it would really improve the software, I think HTC messed that one up.
A picture to show those buttons:
blog.notebooksbilliger.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/vellamoquer.jpg
And they're always there, always on that side (if not build into the app - which it isn't in most cases), and very annoying when gaming.
What do you think?
Thanks in advance if any pro programmer is going to fix this!
That's not an HTC feature the 3 dots are ICS
The button appears when an app isn't optimized for ICS.

Maybe, modifying /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl to change that hardware key to MENU from APP_SWITCH will do the trick.

I'm not very surprised; the XDA app is sadly pretty mediocre. Most annoying thing is that it insists on showing only thumbnails of images, with no way to see the full image unless you open the thread in your web browser (and even if you do so, it won't take you right to the post you were reading; it'll start you at the top of that page of the thread and make you scroll.)

very true indeed, even on their premium version, their handling of images is a pain
Incidentally, everybody complaining about the menu button would do well to consider that on many phones, you *never* get that real-estate back, because *all* of the buttons are on that bar. The way HTC has done it, if the app is properly coded you get to use the full screen real estate, and you're not wasting battery power on backlighting a bar that's always unavailable to the apps, and always black.
When I've used ICS on my HTC Dz, the button isn't there, so it is definitely possible to instruct ICS not to use the button, if a hardware button is available.
I am pretty sure that it's possible to cook into the ROM.

Well I am running ICS on my nexus one and something has been done to that rom in order to not show the three dots, as it has a hardware menu button there is no need for the software one, and whatever they have done prevents it from displaying it so hopefully it could be done here

Does anyone miss the soft keys?
Sent from the Galaxy inside of my Nexus using xda app-developers app
I like the virtual keys as they change sides when I rotate the phone around. Plus they disappear when you don't need them.
I much prefer the virtual keys. It gives the front of the phone a sleeker look, it gives less areas for dust/dirt to get into the phone (vs physical keys), and I like that they can disappear when unneeded for some extra screen real estate.
I agree. Sometimes the old softkeys wouldn't turn off while I'm watching videos even after I had them timed to turn off. Plus we get a bit more screen space. And the phone looks differently from every other android that has the softkeys. I haven't seen other phones sporting the virtual keys. Why would that be?
Sent from a Galaxy inside of my Nexus
Coming from an HTC Incredible, I LOVE the change, I like how they rotate based on orientation, and disappear when not needed/wanted. The part I love the most is the fact that you can customize them with specific ROMs (or apps) so you aren't stuck with keys you may never use (like the search key...).
Another nice thing about the software keys is they always, always have the same exact sensitivity as the rest of the touchscreen. On my Epic they were less sensitive. My back key especially was even less sensitive.

Honest questions, what's to miss about the soft keys? There's nothing they can do that the virtual keys don't do just as well or better.

How about this, when ur old android won't boot down /turn off properly u realize something is wrong because youre experiencing a lag aka hang. The screen looks like its off but u know it is not completely powered down because the softkeys are still on. Which results in having to pull the battery out. That's not exactly a benefit of having softkeys compared to virtual keys, but do u understand what I mean?

Virtual are much better also because you can remove them totally and use other input methods.
Love them...
A. Reduces the bezel, less bezel = more screen
B. Looks much cleaner when the phone is off... love that the gnex is totally black when off
C. Can customize the buttons with custom roms... i don't ever use the Android Search and Recent/Task buttons but I use Menu religiously. I like that I can get rid of the buttons i dont use and add ones that I do and also change the ordering and size of them... customization is the whole point of Android IMHO

Anyhow, I am very happy with them. I always had the backlight turned off on the capacitive buttons on my previous phone as the backlight was way too bright, so the difference is minuscule.
Does anyone know if there is a patch or app or mod that will allow the use of the Flashlight torch via the volume or home buttons on the phone. For example I would like to be able to turn the flashlight on by clicking the volume up and down at the same time or double tapping the home button. Some how turn the light on without having to unlock the phone and navigate to a widget.
Bump
I've used an older app on another handset called "button remapper". It literally does just that, but I'm not sure if it'll knock out the buttons original function all together or just allow both functions to run depending on the current state of use you're in.

I've heard that other ROM's had this feature, I was just wondering if there was a way to install the feature manually apart from a ROM as I'm currently running the Jedi X17 ROM and it does not have this feature.
I will have to check out button remapper.

My D710 is driving me insane with the phantom menu button. Its so bad my search button has been going off at random too. This of course only happens when I am sending text messages, or receiving them. Which makes it extremely frustrating.
I know there's ways to disable these buttons. I do not have my phone rooted, and would rather not root it right now. I am still fighting sprint to replacing it with a different brand, but they insist on repairing it over and over again. If I root it, that will just give them ammo to deny my claims.
Is there anyway to disable the buttons on a bone stock GB27 setup?? Thanks in advance.
If you hold down the menu key. Search will pop up. So your search key is fine. The menu phantom press triggers a "hold" on the menu key at time thus, search pops up. There's a thread someone in the general forum that "fixes" the problem with the menu key.
EDIT: Unfortunately, the file to remap the keys are at system level, so rooting is the only way. You can temporary root, however.

No, if i hold my menu button down... nothing happens. But if i hit the search bar, search pops up.
I am having phantom menu & search buttons. My phone has a mind of its own whenever data is being transfered over the network. My daughters D710 does not act nearly as bad as mine does. Her's does phantom menu every now and then, but mine phantom menu & phantom searches EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unless i am at the sprint store of course.
Anyhow, I understand now that its not possible without root. When you say temporary root, does that mean just root, do the mod & then return to stock? Or is there some other method of temporary rooting?
Hmm.. On stock the way the keys are for me are the way I explained.
Anyway. When finishing running the exploit, you reboot, once the phone is booted, you'll have root. Once you finish editing the file, reboot. Once booted, root is gone. There's an app called frama-root for our device that let's you temp root if I remember correctly.

I sent my phone to Samsung twice for warranty repairs. They replaced the screen first, then when I sent it back they replaced the PBA. The problem never got any better, so I took it to my local sprint store where the tech was well aware of the issue. He replaced my screen (again) and it seems like the problem has gotten worse.
I will take a look at the tutorial you linked and see if i can make this work. Does that tutorial require me to root my device?

I hate giving up screen space for the navbar. Especially when only the Menu button is at fault. Is there anyway to disable JUST the menu button, and leave the Home, back & search keys?
