How do you order your soft buttons and which ones do you include. I started off modeling the Nexus S buttons and moved to the these three shortly there after.
Home long-press gives me the recent menu.

Little awkward coming from the Thunderbolt (Which had home in the first slot) but I feel like this works best.
Oh and of course long pressing home brings up recents.
I have played with this order too. I want to get on board with google and stay away from menu.
What bothered me was when I pushed it, on some apps menu would appear at the top. Leaving me to wonder why I just didn't push the in app menu.

Hopefully I am not too off topic saying it pisses me off that sometimes the menu is located up top and sometimes down low. wtf? This needs to be standardized and quick.

Thus you will always have people modding it to the navigation bar. It is (In my eyes) going to be too in consistent and power users will want a centralized location to always have it available.
I've played with a few different softkey orders (and played with adding the big menu button back), but I keep coming back to the stock arrangement. I guess I'm just boring.
Back-Menu-Home-Task-Search
Ive played around with ordering and I keep coming back to the stock setup.
Back / Home / Recents
*Although I do have the menu buttons show up on both sides*
I had it originally set up so that a long press on home showed recents, but the small delay of waiting for the recent apps was quite annoying. It's the little things that bother me apparently lol

Interesting differences. I just can't decide what's best for me. All options seems interesting.
In terms of standardization. We will have to see if new phones opt for on screen or off screen buttons.

Ok, this may be a totally dumb question, but how the hell do I control/interact with Google Earth on my Nexus (4.0.2). I cannot seem to get it to tilt and pan etc using touch. I see no other icons or menus with control options? Am I missing something simple?
Uninstall and redownload.
Terminators run on Android
Ok. I'll try that. but this was the pre-installed Earth that came on my phone. Not sure I can uninstall. will try though. It's updated itself since I got the phone so should have the latest version, but will try. thanks
Ok I uninstalled the updates to the app, but I cannot uninstall this "system app". So I disabled it, forced stop. Enabled it again and will now download updates to make it 6.1 again.
I'm not sure what I should be seeing when using this app. There are no controls.
Just go to market and search for your application on the menus, then press your app Earth and there will be an option to update.. That's what i've done.
Cheers!
I have the very latest google earth from the market. 6.1 something.
Here is a screenshot. Does this look right? how do I tilt the screen to get the 3d angle? all I can do is drag around, and rotate. I cannot tilt so I can see topography?
ARGH. Im sure its just me not knowing how to use it.
Screen shot - where are the tilt controls?

I too would like to learn how to tilt the view in Google Earth.
But I am bemused by the responses so far. Why is it necessary to uninstall and reinstall? Are you suggesting that the factory installation (with updates) is somehow broken?
Use two fingers to rotate/tilt.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Hold two fingers to the screen and instead of pinching, just slide both up or down to change viewing angle or rotate them in a circular motion around a centred point in order to spin.

I thought so, because the OP said other icons and controls were also missing. I also did not realize it was a system app (it was a Market app on my Fascinate and treated by my ROM as a user app)

How the hell did I not figure that out!! Never used multi-touch in that way before.
Thats great. Exactly the solution I needed. thank you.
I've been using touchscreen for 2 years, so I cannot be the first person not to figure that out. No hint on the app itself or help about how to do that.
anyway, cheers

Google maps works the exact same way. If you go to maps and drag 2 fingers down you will get that "3d" view. It's cool. They must be trying to get some continuity from app to app.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Although I'd agree it's not massively obvious in the app, there's always Menu > Help. Which has this to say:
To tilt your screen, touch the Look-Around icon and ensure it's enabled. To tilt up, touch the screen and move down. To tilt down, touch the screen and move up.

Spotted the problem? The "Look Around" button doesn't seem to exist any more, so the help is out of date! Wonderful.
I can confirm the "two finger draggy-spin" method works fine though
I know the solution. This was happening to me too but i figured out. This is how to do it. Enable auto rotation open Google earth and tilt your device then hold two fingers and swipe downward or upward. I hope i helped so thank me. Ok!!!!!!

This phone is OK. Ice cream is okay. My biggest gripe is the soft keys. I do not understand the logic in it. If your going to give me the soft keys (ie. Back button, home button, recent apps button) then give me my Back, Home, Menu, and search button. Its crazy how unproductive I find myself all because I need to click the top right corner of the screen for the search button, when my nexus s or Droid pro simply had a search soft key at the bottom.
Please tell me there's a way or tweak this?
Here's what I want. The Recent Apps button(far right key) by default should be the search key. Holding The Recent Apps button should activate the Menu button. As with the Home Button, holding it down should active the recent apps button. Its that simple.
It doesn't have to be like that but somewhere along those lines. I really think Google took a step back with getting rid of the soft buttons. Sure it makes phones like the. Galaxy nexus look pretty but I'm trying to be productive here

Its nothing Google did. On my gnex I have 4 soft buttons, search, back, home and apps. The function is still there. HTC just decided not to. Its up to manufacturer. At least with soft buttons they can be changed to add functions.
I was watching a few videos on YouTube that showed some custom roms for the one x and it actually tweaks the soft keys so they act a lot like android devices with four soft keys. I am relieved! Lol

The Menu and Search keys are deprecated as of Android 4.0. The reasoning behind it is that they did different functions in every app. With the back, home, and tasker buttons they are the same across the system regardless of what app you're in.

Hey everyone. Today I released a new version of my app, Tablified Market HD and I'd really like for you guys to check it out.
Tablified Market HD is the largest database of Android tablet apps. It is a curated list of apps that have been specifically designed to take advantage of the screen real estate of your tablet.
We've completely revamped this version with a brand new Holo interface. We replaced the aging list view with a beautiful, snappy grid view-similar to what the Google Play store offers. The UI itself was inspired from the Google Now cards.
We add apps constantly. Featured graphics are changes out every couple weeks and apps are added every 1-2 days depending on what we find. Remember, if developers don't make tablet apps, we have nothing to add.
I hope you enjoy my app!
Here's what's in version 4.4.1:
[NEW] Removed App & Prize sections until we fix the loading error
[NEW] Added exit confirmation prompt when pressing back button
[FIXED] In search results, back button takes you to previous page of results
[FIXED] After selecting app from the search results, pressing the top-left icon now takes you back to the results
[FIXED] In search results, the top-left button takes you back to the main app screen.

I really love the new update on my Nexus 7.
The new UI is beautiful and simple, just like a tablet UI should be.
You have done a very good Job!

I'm sorry you're having issues with the app. I am not having this issue on my test devices (which includes the Nexus 7). I pushed out an update today and maybe that will help address the issue. If not, feel free to email me at [email protected].

Does anyone know if there is a patch or app or mod that will allow the use of the Flashlight torch via the volume or home buttons on the phone. For example I would like to be able to turn the flashlight on by clicking the volume up and down at the same time or double tapping the home button. Some how turn the light on without having to unlock the phone and navigate to a widget.
Bump
I've used an older app on another handset called "button remapper". It literally does just that, but I'm not sure if it'll knock out the buttons original function all together or just allow both functions to run depending on the current state of use you're in.

Thanks everyone for your responses.
I've heard that other ROM's had this feature, I was just wondering if there was a way to install the feature manually apart from a ROM as I'm currently running the Jedi X17 ROM and it does not have this feature.
I will have to check out button remapper.
Thanks again guys!

Since you want to stay with the Rom of your choice. You just need to install xposed framework, then all you need is the Tweak Box module. And your good to go!

Any ideas for how to remap the buttons on 4.1.2? I'd like to be able to do a long home button press on the lock screen for the torch and a double tap when unlocked for Google Voice Search rather than SVoice.

My D710 is driving me insane with the phantom menu button. Its so bad my search button has been going off at random too. This of course only happens when I am sending text messages, or receiving them. Which makes it extremely frustrating.
I know there's ways to disable these buttons. I do not have my phone rooted, and would rather not root it right now. I am still fighting sprint to replacing it with a different brand, but they insist on repairing it over and over again. If I root it, that will just give them ammo to deny my claims.
Is there anyway to disable the buttons on a bone stock GB27 setup?? Thanks in advance.
If you hold down the menu key. Search will pop up. So your search key is fine. The menu phantom press triggers a "hold" on the menu key at time thus, search pops up. There's a thread someone in the general forum that "fixes" the problem with the menu key.
EDIT: Unfortunately, the file to remap the keys are at system level, so rooting is the only way. You can temporary root, however.

No, if i hold my menu button down... nothing happens. But if i hit the search bar, search pops up.
I am having phantom menu & search buttons. My phone has a mind of its own whenever data is being transfered over the network. My daughters D710 does not act nearly as bad as mine does. Her's does phantom menu every now and then, but mine phantom menu & phantom searches EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unless i am at the sprint store of course.
Anyhow, I understand now that its not possible without root. When you say temporary root, does that mean just root, do the mod & then return to stock? Or is there some other method of temporary rooting?
Hmm.. On stock the way the keys are for me are the way I explained.
Anyway. When finishing running the exploit, you reboot, once the phone is booted, you'll have root. Once you finish editing the file, reboot. Once booted, root is gone. There's an app called frama-root for our device that let's you temp root if I remember correctly.

Here is a tutorial on how to disable your key so you can use pie control and LMT. @graydiggy put it together and it works great, but you'll have to send it back to Sprint and have them replace the pba(mother board) to fix the issue completely. I sent my phone to Samsung twice for warranty repairs. They replaced the screen first, then when I sent it back they replaced the PBA. The problem never got any better, so I took it to my local sprint store where the tech was well aware of the issue. He replaced my screen (again) and it seems like the problem has gotten worse.
I will take a look at the tutorial you linked and see if i can make this work. Does that tutorial require me to root my device?
Yup, you'll need to be rooted.

Great, so I followed the guide and Disabled the softkeys, then enabled the Navbar. Seems like that took care of it, so far I have had 0 phantom keypresses.
I hate giving up screen space for the navbar. Especially when only the Menu button is at fault. Is there anyway to disable JUST the menu button, and leave the Home, back & search keys?
Thanks again for the help guys.
This method is for the power button, but I'm sure you could remap the menu button too-http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?t=796092
