My D710 is driving me insane with the phantom menu button. Its so bad my search button has been going off at random too. This of course only happens when I am sending text messages, or receiving them. Which makes it extremely frustrating.
I know there's ways to disable these buttons. I do not have my phone rooted, and would rather not root it right now. I am still fighting sprint to replacing it with a different brand, but they insist on repairing it over and over again. If I root it, that will just give them ammo to deny my claims.
Is there anyway to disable the buttons on a bone stock GB27 setup?? Thanks in advance.
If you hold down the menu key. Search will pop up. So your search key is fine. The menu phantom press triggers a "hold" on the menu key at time thus, search pops up. There's a thread someone in the general forum that "fixes" the problem with the menu key.
EDIT: Unfortunately, the file to remap the keys are at system level, so rooting is the only way. You can temporary root, however.

No, if i hold my menu button down... nothing happens. But if i hit the search bar, search pops up.
I am having phantom menu & search buttons. My phone has a mind of its own whenever data is being transfered over the network. My daughters D710 does not act nearly as bad as mine does. Her's does phantom menu every now and then, but mine phantom menu & phantom searches EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unless i am at the sprint store of course.
Anyhow, I understand now that its not possible without root. When you say temporary root, does that mean just root, do the mod & then return to stock? Or is there some other method of temporary rooting?
Hmm.. On stock the way the keys are for me are the way I explained.
Anyway. When finishing running the exploit, you reboot, once the phone is booted, you'll have root. Once you finish editing the file, reboot. Once booted, root is gone. There's an app called frama-root for our device that let's you temp root if I remember correctly.

Here is a tutorial on how to disable your key so you can use pie control and LMT. @graydiggy put it together and it works great, but you'll have to send it back to Sprint and have them replace the pba(mother board) to fix the issue completely. Be sure to thank him if it works for you! Happy Thanksgiving

I sent my phone to Samsung twice for warranty repairs. They replaced the screen first, then when I sent it back they replaced the PBA. The problem never got any better, so I took it to my local sprint store where the tech was well aware of the issue. He replaced my screen (again) and it seems like the problem has gotten worse.
I will take a look at the tutorial you linked and see if i can make this work. Does that tutorial require me to root my device?
Yup, you'll need to be rooted.

Great, so I followed the guide and Disabled the softkeys, then enabled the Navbar. Seems like that took care of it, so far I have had 0 phantom keypresses.
I hate giving up screen space for the navbar. Especially when only the Menu button is at fault. Is there anyway to disable JUST the menu button, and leave the Home, back & search keys?
Thanks again for the help guys.
This method is for the power button, but I'm sure you could remap the menu button too-http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?t=796092

Okay so today I flashed this ROM to my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889349
I went to get rid of the hardware buttons... but the modified generic.kl file did not disable the hardware keys like it did with the stock rom.
Any ideas why and how I can get the mod to work with the MIUI rom??

I fixed the problem by replacing the phone.
I got a LG G2. I will never get another Samsung phone.

I think the G2 guys could have taken this one cue from the iPhone and other phones. I'm really hoping this is something we can add after root is available.
Not a big fan of having to use the power button.
I have been using widget locker app and it allows to be waken from by trackpad.

ya on my n1 it was so much more convenient to just press the trackball to wake ugh patience i guess...

Yea it is kind of irritating having to press power to wake all the time

No legendary is right. Widget locker fixes this well enough.
Just disable the notification icon and in advanced settings check "wake up with any button press".
As far as I can tell the only draw back is having to slide the bar to unlock and then having to enter ur unlock pattern if u have one.

I'm glad you found your answer on your own. I really do like that app and when it worked it was a double bonus. Had it installed on my nexus one. Can't wait for ROMS to take advantage of it soon

I used it on my Vibrant. It was kind of buggy at times. Though, I'm not sure if that was the app, or the phone.
No its the app. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't...
Another trick
If you are holding the phone in your left hand (as I mostly do), use the trick that someone posted in another thread-- Just snap the keyboard open about 1/4 of the way. It will wake and unlock in one super-quick step. It can be done in the right hand, too, just not quite as easily.

You really have to tweak settings to make it reliable... took me a bit. Hiding the notification makes it less reliable by their own admission. I have it working fine now though.

I'm also using the rotary slider instead of the standard one...
so now I press the trackpad to wake up... slide to unlick, and then use unlock pattern to get to home screen. I still prefer that to having to press the top power button.

awesome - thanks for this, i'll be giving it a whirl!
[EDIT] i just tried it out, tried many different settings (including those suggested) and couldn't get it to work more than a few times. alas, that's more frustrating than helpful, so til it's fixed i've uninstalled. thanks for trying to help out though - i really do want trackpad wake.
^ ditto. It was reliable for a while then became sporadic
This should be an app fixable thing as opposed to needing root though. I will wait I suppose.
I really want this feature too, but I don't want to have the phone wake when pressing the vol/camera keys. Is there somewhere we can request this in the next software update from T-mobile / HTC? I assume this is not remediable without rooting otherwise. I'd prefer not to root my phone just for this one feature.
i haven't tweaked any settings and my trackpad now wakes the phone up every time. I say now, as it didn't do it consistently until i un-installed a live wall paper i had (Thunderstorms) - a couple of other issues vaporized when i un-installed that app
neat wallpaper though - the developer is supposed to be working out the bugs for use on the G2

Hahhaha! Don't ask tmobile or htc for help. They'll just lock it down more. I have a headache from trying to get root access working. This nand lock really sucks! Sorry a bit off topic, I guess.
So now that we've got full root, is there a quick, simple and reliable way to wake the phone by pressing the trackpad button (i.e. wake to the unlock screen, not fully unlock).
[Edit: Found it, works perfectly on my Desire-Z, needs root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830806]

This phone is OK. Ice cream is okay. My biggest gripe is the soft keys. I do not understand the logic in it. If your going to give me the soft keys (ie. Back button, home button, recent apps button) then give me my Back, Home, Menu, and search button. Its crazy how unproductive I find myself all because I need to click the top right corner of the screen for the search button, when my nexus s or Droid pro simply had a search soft key at the bottom.
Please tell me there's a way or tweak this?
Here's what I want. The Recent Apps button(far right key) by default should be the search key. Holding The Recent Apps button should activate the Menu button. As with the Home Button, holding it down should active the recent apps button. Its that simple.
It doesn't have to be like that but somewhere along those lines. I really think Google took a step back with getting rid of the soft buttons. Sure it makes phones like the. Galaxy nexus look pretty but I'm trying to be productive here

Its nothing Google did. On my gnex I have 4 soft buttons, search, back, home and apps. The function is still there. HTC just decided not to. Its up to manufacturer. At least with soft buttons they can be changed to add functions.
I was watching a few videos on YouTube that showed some custom roms for the one x and it actually tweaks the soft keys so they act a lot like android devices with four soft keys. I am relieved! Lol

It's everything Google did btw...they changed the button layout in the Galaxy Nexus and have tried to get OEMs to remove the menu button and use the 'Action Bar' instead...blame Google, not HTC

You know what? I am gonna blame Google for this. There was nothing wrong with the soft keys on all android hand sets. Yeah I think the menu keys on the galaxy nexua do look better but they seems impractical and it makes the menus inconsistent
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
The Menu and Search keys are deprecated as of Android 4.0. The reasoning behind it is that they did different functions in every app. With the back, home, and tasker buttons they are the same across the system regardless of what app you're in.
Okay, so I have a strange dilemma. I am currently using GB08 Stock Rooted of the ROM. Last week I was using my phone when suddenly my phone rebooted by itself, at first I thought it was an app crashing or something normal which happens to all of us so I restarted it. Strangely, on the bottom left hand corner displayed a text box saying "SAFE MODE", to my knowledge I had this on my original Epic 4G and the solution for me was to restart the device, but it didn't go away. In addition all my apps were gone and the volume down button seemed to malfunction when turning the music down. As a solution I tried to ODIN GB08 (strangely the volume down button works when trying to get to Download Mode), but the volume up button doesn't work even though it does work when I boot it into "Safe Mode". I tried to use Mobile Odin but it the device won't allow me to use apps other than those that were pre-installed into the device. I tried taking out the battery and waiting up to 10 minutes and restarted it but no luck, so I want to know if any of you guys know how to fix this?
:crying:
I had this issue happen about a month ago. The volume down key is sticking.
You need to take the phone apart and clean it up. Repeatedly press the volume rockers until you feel that it is back to normal. Then put the phone back together and put the battery back in.

Well the volume rockers seem to fix itself, but went back to safe mode, I guess it is broken. I guess I'll have to get a new phone, I'll wait for the GS4 to come out since my contract is over in mid April. But thank you for helping me!

A work-around for phones stuck in safe mode due to water damage etc but that seem to work fine otherwise is to convert the (trusted) apps you need from data apps to system apps (move the .apk from /data/app to /system/app after installing via the Play Store). You may need to use Mounts2Sd or something similar with an sd-ext partition if you don't have enough space in your internal /system partition for all the apps you need. (With Mounts2Sd, placing the apps in /data/app-system on the sd-ext partition will fool the phone into thinking the apps are in /system/app and you can then use them in safe mode). If anybody is aware of a simpler script that does the same thing, please lmk.
If this helps you, please hit the Thanks button.
Does anyone know if there is a patch or app or mod that will allow the use of the Flashlight torch via the volume or home buttons on the phone. For example I would like to be able to turn the flashlight on by clicking the volume up and down at the same time or double tapping the home button. Some how turn the light on without having to unlock the phone and navigate to a widget.
Bump
I've used an older app on another handset called "button remapper". It literally does just that, but I'm not sure if it'll knock out the buttons original function all together or just allow both functions to run depending on the current state of use you're in.

I've heard that other ROM's had this feature, I was just wondering if there was a way to install the feature manually apart from a ROM as I'm currently running the Jedi X17 ROM and it does not have this feature.
I will have to check out button remapper.

I believe you can remap your keys in generic.kl to wake with volume
check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203059
a very basic guide on how to get the .kl file then just edit as you wish
I have been looking for a solution for this for quite some time. I am using gravity off right now. I just tried to change this file many times. I commented out Key 116 and put the POWER in key 115, the vol up, but that didnt work. I then tried to comment out all the POWER buttons in the file and replaced VOL up with POWER button - that didnt work. Then i reverted back and added the WAKE to the ends of VOL up and down, and that didnt work either. After all changes, i reverted the permission to the correct values.
Any one get this to work? Stock rooted GB27.
