[Q] 3 dots ('Menu' button) - VERY ANNOYING - Could someone fix that? - HTC One X

Hey guys,
I received my Htc One X today.
It's great and all, I love it, but one thing that really annoys me is the menu button (3 dots) which is placed on the screen and resizes the screen (basically makes the screen smaller) on many games and apps, also, it's almost always visible in almost every app/game - very annoying.
I'd suggest if someone could fix that button, like.. remove the button completely from the screen and let apps use the full HD mode, like they're supposed to - and use a hardware button such as volume up/down (if pressed for like 3 seconds) for it.
That would be great and it would really improve the software, I think HTC messed that one up.
A picture to show those buttons:
blog.notebooksbilliger.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/vellamoquer.jpg
And they're always there, always on that side (if not build into the app - which it isn't in most cases), and very annoying when gaming.
What do you think?
Thanks in advance if any pro programmer is going to fix this!

That's not an HTC feature the 3 dots are ICS

The button appears when an app isn't optimized for ICS.

Oh ok. Thanks for the replies.

Maybe, modifying /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl to change that hardware key to MENU from APP_SWITCH will do the trick.
Or, something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21501238
However, my One X is still not here, so can't try that.

The best possible Solution would be long press Task manager to open Menu. But even after that it would be probably necessary to disable the menu bar from poping up.

Re-map task manager to the menu button, and use long press for task manager.
I don't think one can make too much use of the task manager anyways.

I'm not very surprised; the XDA app is sadly pretty mediocre. Most annoying thing is that it insists on showing only thumbnails of images, with no way to see the full image unless you open the thread in your web browser (and even if you do so, it won't take you right to the post you were reading; it'll start you at the top of that page of the thread and make you scroll.)

I absolutely agree. Would be nice if someone could do that and remove the digital menu button / let apps use the full screen.

very true indeed, even on their premium version, their handling of images is a pain

Incidentally, everybody complaining about the menu button would do well to consider that on many phones, you *never* get that real-estate back, because *all* of the buttons are on that bar. The way HTC has done it, if the app is properly coded you get to use the full screen real estate, and you're not wasting battery power on backlighting a bar that's always unavailable to the apps, and always black.

When I've used ICS on my HTC Dz, the button isn't there, so it is definitely possible to instruct ICS not to use the button, if a hardware button is available.
I am pretty sure that it's possible to cook into the ROM.

Yeah, but as you said, your DZ has a hardware menu button. But it's probably possible to use the multitask button as a menu button and keep the multitask menu that way is has been - you open it by long pressing home.

Well I am running ICS on my nexus one and something has been done to that rom in order to not show the three dots, as it has a hardware menu button there is no need for the software one, and whatever they have done prevents it from displaying it so hopefully it could be done here

Well I tweeted the following to Paul O'brien :

Permanent root has already been achieved; and S-Off achieved by HTCDev route. It'll likely be as good as it gets for a while at least.

Wake phone up with trackpad?

I think the G2 guys could have taken this one cue from the iPhone and other phones. I'm really hoping this is something we can add after root is available.
Not a big fan of having to use the power button.
I have been using widget locker app and it allows to be waken from by trackpad.

ya on my n1 it was so much more convenient to just press the trackball to wake ugh patience i guess...

No legendary is right. Widget locker fixes this well enough.
Just disable the notification icon and in advanced settings check "wake up with any button press".
As far as I can tell the only draw back is having to slide the bar to unlock and then having to enter ur unlock pattern if u have one.

I'm glad you found your answer on your own. I really do like that app and when it worked it was a double bonus. Had it installed on my nexus one. Can't wait for ROMS to take advantage of it soon

I used it on my Vibrant. It was kind of buggy at times. Though, I'm not sure if that was the app, or the phone.
No its the app. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't...
Another trick
If you are holding the phone in your left hand (as I mostly do), use the trick that someone posted in another thread-- Just snap the keyboard open about 1/4 of the way. It will wake and unlock in one super-quick step. It can be done in the right hand, too, just not quite as easily.

You really have to tweak settings to make it reliable... took me a bit. Hiding the notification makes it less reliable by their own admission. I have it working fine now though.

I'm also using the rotary slider instead of the standard one...
so now I press the trackpad to wake up... slide to unlick, and then use unlock pattern to get to home screen. I still prefer that to having to press the top power button.

awesome - thanks for this, i'll be giving it a whirl!
[EDIT] i just tried it out, tried many different settings (including those suggested) and couldn't get it to work more than a few times. alas, that's more frustrating than helpful, so til it's fixed i've uninstalled. thanks for trying to help out though - i really do want trackpad wake.
^ ditto. It was reliable for a while then became sporadic
This should be an app fixable thing as opposed to needing root though. I will wait I suppose.
I really want this feature too, but I don't want to have the phone wake when pressing the vol/camera keys. Is there somewhere we can request this in the next software update from T-mobile / HTC? I assume this is not remediable without rooting otherwise. I'd prefer not to root my phone just for this one feature.
i haven't tweaked any settings and my trackpad now wakes the phone up every time. I say now, as it didn't do it consistently until i un-installed a live wall paper i had (Thunderstorms) - a couple of other issues vaporized when i un-installed that app
neat wallpaper though - the developer is supposed to be working out the bugs for use on the G2

Hahhaha! Don't ask tmobile or htc for help. They'll just lock it down more. I have a headache from trying to get root access working. This nand lock really sucks! Sorry a bit off topic, I guess.
So now that we've got full root, is there a quick, simple and reliable way to wake the phone by pressing the trackpad button (i.e. wake to the unlock screen, not fully unlock).
[Edit: Found it, works perfectly on my Desire-Z, needs root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830806]

[APP] QuickSwitch (App Switcher) - ALT-TAB behaviour

It's an app I developed to mimic ALT-TAB behaviour.

Story:
I am a proud Desire Z owner and have to say the Vision is amazing with its keyboard. One thing I still hate about day to day tasks is switching between Google Talk and MSN apps. I hate reaching up to the notification bar from the keyboard.
So I wrote an app to solve this problem. I call it QuickSwitch.
By taking advantage of the quick keys on the keyboard, I wrote an app that basically launches other apps. It's configurable which apps you want favourit-ed and how many running apps to show. I also made it mimic alt-tab function by pressing Quick key 1 and comma. This would switch back and forth between apps very quickly.

If you like QuickSwitch, You can send me a donation to my Paypal http://bit.ly/quickswitch-donate-paypal or through the Android Market and search for "QuickSwitch (Donate Only)". The donate version does not add any functionality.
Questions / Comments
If you want to provide any comments and/or feedback, please post in this thread. New feature requests can be submitted at http://bit.ly/quickswitch-request.
If you could, please add comments and ratings on Market as it can encourage me to develop better stuff!
Thanks!
nice idea, but if your just using it to switch between gtalk and msn why don't you just install ebuddy and run both together?
its configuable to switch between any app.
i like the ability to make the quick keys function like alt and tab. im downloading it right now, will come back with comments
edit:
i think i misunderstood, can this make the quick keys function as alt or shift? i hate the placement of they keys and i hate the quick keys theyre pointless, i like better the keyboard layout on the merge
is there anyway to assign the quick keys the alt or tab function?
aside from that though, its pretty cool app and its fast too. good job
do you mean using TAB to switch versus comma and period key? I can look into making that possible. did I understand you correctly?
so it kinda mimics what happens when you hold the home key?
yes. there's recent running apps as well as favorite apps. its makes toggling apps a lot easier.
no i meant more like a keyboard remapping. i want the two center quick keys to act as either alt or shift
Very cool app! Thanks!!

Done. A well earned 5 *'s
As for making it better, I honestly think it is one of those rare gems that comes out the box 100%, its perfect for what it is used for. I like the clean look it has so I would have to see what overlay you use to judge if it will be good. Long pressing an app to add does sound good however.
You get these kind of apps once in a blue and what ends up happening is the dev always thinks that he/she has to improve it and just adds up making it bloated. I like it as is. Here's a great piece of advice; make a version with what you plan to add and put it up as a donate version, feel out the market, then just tidy the code up for this one and sit on it. You do great work.

Thanks for your feedback. Your suggestion is a good one. I can certainly split it up into two apps.
I am also thinking about how this can be used for devices with no keyboard. Maybe splitting the screen into two halfs - left selects from favourites and right selects from running. Hmm...
I love your app. Idk if it goes into two rows when u got a lot of shortcuts set but would be nice. Thank you for this wonderful app!

Windows Phone 7 - Multitasking conecpt

Hi Guys,
hope i'm somehow right here and you are - more or less - interested in my concept/idea.
I didn't really know about this forum, but some guy in an other forum suggest i should post it here. Well... i do, don't know...
Anyway. Since the day i knew that WP7 wouldn't have any multitasking from the start, i was pretty sure how i would let it look like.
And a few days ago i saw the pictures of version 7753 with this search-button on the rightside and i realized, that MS could actually use that space.
So i decided that it would be time to visualize my thoughts, so here they are:
htt p://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5137/mulasking.png
Instead of the search-button i'd put a taskbar-icon at that place. Pressing the icon drops the actual taskbar with all running programms. By pressing an icon you can directly go into the programm/app, by pressing and holding the icon you can close it. And with the little up-showing arrow you can close the taskbar.
I also made the mail-hub a "wide-hub" (don't know how to call it...). First of all, i love those "wide-hubs", but it would also be nice, to see who wrote your latest recieved email and whats the topic is.
And last but not least i would like to split the zune-functions. I use the zune-hub basicly for listing to my music for example, so it would be nice, to sort out that function and create a music-tile on the homescreen. This could also work with videos, podcasts etc.
And... while i was in the mood i made some customization-concepts. I tried to keep all basic Metro-elemnts and just improve some things.
The transparancy is not knew, i know that it was introduced in an earlier conecpt by someone else, but it's a nice idea and i'd just love to see something like that. Of course it only make sense, if you can put pictures or at least gradients (like in the mentioned concept) on your homescreeb background.
htt p://img846.imageshack.us/img846/1870/custom.png
At last i thought about some all-over-themes, where you can't individually customize your UI, but use themes. For exempale i love the zune-look with, which is why i even made three different zune-themes.
htt p://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7904/themesl.png
C&C is of course appreciated... in any way.
And sorry if i'm totaly wrong here.
Buddy i can not see the pictures...It says to login to imageshack! Please Upload them somewhere else or you can upload them here.
Regards.
No. I'm a first-time-poster so i can't put outgoing links into my posts. At least as long as i havn't made 8 posts. ;-)
But i put a [space] between the htt_p. Thats why those links won't work with simple copy-paste. You just have to erase that little space there and the links will work.
At least they do it for me and i also have no imageshack-account. o.0
I can see the pictures okay. It makes good use of the blank space below the "next screen" arrow in WP7.
Maybe this is why Microsoft left the area blank The only thing I do not like is the way you did the close menu. I would do it like the OS has the menu system - bottom. It would also give you more options.
Can you give me wallpaper on the second slide?
wow! i think your concept of multitasking is fantastic! i really like the way it looks and its a very smart use of the space on the right of the home screen!
Looks really good! But what if you want to switch while being in an app?
I can see the wide eMail icon come really soon! Hopefully ;-)

Ditto to your comment. I was wondering the same thing about switching within an app.
After all, having return to the home screen is what we CURRENTLY must do... There's no advantage in this unless you can call up the task manager from within any app.

This is just adding a second set of tiles to the homescreen. That's it. Unless there's some way to open that taskmanager up within any app- it's no different than what there currently exists.

yea i can see what you mean. opening the multitasking in an app would be nice. but it would not affect me to have to return to the home screen
Yeah, you're right. That was, was I was kinda missing.
But here is where the actual multitasking that MS showed before could come to work again. While you're in an app you press the back-button a litte bit longer. What than shows up could look like it does now in the "officel concept", or maybe like this...

Agreed.
I like the minimalist use of that side space, but I'm not sure a multi-tasking menu there is any improvement over the Mango demos. However, it might be a decent space for a "recent app" history bar, a toggle-able notification menu (a la Android/WebOS), or something along those lines.

i do have to say that is a fine idea. keeps all the tiles as the are on in the games area (like how if you enter multitasking on iOS the icons pop up with the same size as if they were on the main screen). so yea everything stays equal. both ideas are great! would be awesome to see microsoft impement one of them!
Very cool work! All of these are pretty realistic additions and I hope Microsoft eventually does something like this.
Your multitasking and customisation concepts look really good. I'd love to have multitasking like this.
After all, I would start the taskmanager by longpressing the Windows-button too.
Official concept says it will be longpressing the back-button but in my opinion you'll need the taskmanager more often than this useless voicecommand.
since ms is not yet done with their own concept of mt., i hope they are still open to other great suggestions such as this one. it maximizes the blank space on the right side, simple and neat. its a great concept. hope what they have presented in mwc will not be the final code for mt. they need to think of ways on how to simplify it and one good example is this one.

[APP] Standby Touch - simple app for a simple job

Today I got a little bit bored and decide to make this simple app. As the name says, it allows to put the phone in Standby (Lock) with the touch of app's icon. I know that there are many many apps that do this, but maybe in the future I could add other options to it. So far it seems to work fine, I tested it with Jellbro latest nightly and works like a charm. Maybe I am too lazy, but because my phone is on the desk most of the day, I find it not very convenient to press the Power button...

You can find it on Google Play at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alinberce.standbytouch
Feel free to give me suggestions . Also a high rating on Google Play would help. Thanks.
App looks fine and the design is not too bad, however I do not see a point in such Apps, since a simple press on the power button does the same. It is even faster, since one of my fingers is usually very close to it anyway.
But as I said, nice work.
Thanks for this! Just got a metal bumper and its annoying to press the power button.
This works great, nice icon !
Edit: don't know why but sometimes the screen wakes up Again right after sleeping. I can't seem to reproduce the problem, seems random.

Wow that does look pretty nice.Thanks.
Quite good idea
any I like your design and interface. it's nice!
Thank you all for your kind words.
@FC1032: I never had my screen turning on after lock, but I did with other apps. I am using a clean install with no apps installed (except keyboard app). Maybe there could be a conflict with other app ? I will restore a bunch of the apps I use and see if I can manage to reproduce this. The app code is fairly simple, just access basic android functions and close itself on clock. Even the Settings page is closed when you leave it
I was thinking of adding some extra features on shutdown... what would you like to do extra, when you send your phone to standby ? How about this: if I set some interval, for instance 10 pm-8am, add some functions like: switch to silent, disable data... etc.
PS: please don't be shy, spread some 5 stars in Google Play, it will help the app to get more users. Thank you all again.

Nope, stock.
I think I'll see if another application I recently installed. Thanks for the help guys

Just downloaded the app. Seems to work fine. One thing that will make it more professional is if you proof read your description on the Google Play page.
For example:
Responsibility, not Responsability
Installation, not Instalation
And the word nasTy, unless that T is supposed to be there.
These are nit picky things, but it makes the app and developer look more polished
Good luck!
Interesting request... I see one way of doing this: there is no way I could catch a double/triple touch on the app's icon, as the icon is in a Launcher app. However I could add in Settings an option with Re-Touch for Shutdown popup. Basically the App would start with a black screen, waiting for 1 seconds for another touch, if no touch it goes to standby, if touch it shows the popup. The only downside would be the shutdown command can only be run on a Rooted device (not really a problem for Nexus ).
Are there other users who would find this feature useful ?
@Cyberdan3: thank you for your corrections. Now it's fixed.
PS: thank you all for your ratings in Google Play... the app is starting to get some stars
@FC1032 do you still have screen wake-ups ? I am using the app since release and not even once the screen opened after lock.

Thanks for confirming it.
Nice, this along; with "PGM slide2wake" eliminates most power-button presses.

Unfortunately it seems that depending on ROM version (I've tested quite a few), sometimes there is a issue with screen starting again after lock. There are two ways of making things, one simpler and one more complex. I will go with the simpler one first and see feedback. I am preparing a new version which will add a really neat feature... but because I want to keep the design path of the settings page, also on the new feature, I will need to spend some time in the drawing app
Sneak preview of the new version... it just entered testing phase
Ok guys, new version is on Google Play. I did not have enough time to make extensive testing so this may have some bugs on the tasks feature. The Task feature allows you to define intervals in which the Sound/Data/Wifi are On or Off. The app, when you perform a lock will check and update the device of the status as set in Tasks. In order to avoid repetitive operations and prevent battery usage, the check is made only ONCE per interval. So for example if you set the phone to be silent from 22 - 07 and you lock your phone at 22:15, if you reopen and use it, when you lock it again, the app will only make simple lock without all the checks again. If some of you prefer it otherwise, please let me know so I could add an extra setting for it.
As I said earlier, there are some ROM versions where the screen comes On again after lock. The only way I found to handle this is to relock the device after half of second again. So you may notice a slight screen on, but most of the time it will not.
Please let me know if you find any bugs. Thanks.

I have test it
Will Post my 2 cent for the "New Features" Sony gave us with 4.2.2 here.
1. The Lockscreen and its Widgets.
For me absolutely useless and it looks like someone at the Sony Development Center is trying his first Steps. Why we need all these Methods to Enter the Camera?
For somebody who did not mentioned til now, if the Phone is Locked, Longpress Cam-Button will also Access Cam.
But the worst for me is the Look and Feel at all, a Lockscreen like a 2nd useless Desktop where nothing comes together, Terrible, in my Opinion.
The Way Google or CM does it is way better, easy and clean, but what Sony gave us here seems like an Alpha Build of a non Concept Thing.
Do your Homework Sony!
The Dialpad in Lockscreen, hm, in my Opinion the older One way better, so why we need that at this point of the System, where we can only enter Keys and Emergency Calls....don't Know...looks confusing.
2. Taskmanager and Small Apps.
In my Opinion, Beta also, Google mixed with Sony. Sonys Way before was Looking that they have had an Idea what they want to do, Now, it don't look like.
3. Status, Nav and Notification Bar.
The Toogles had have been there from first Build.....to have them now by Stock....very good....Best I've Seen in 4.2.2 from Sony.
The Way Sony goes with every new Build switching the UI, grey...black...half Transparent, Transparent....in my Opinion, give the User the Option to size and colour the Things for himself.
Conclusion:
Like great Philosophy says....to follow a Path you have to know where you want to be at the End. Don't make any Path your Target.
I'am very happy that the People, Developers in this Forum are existent and trying to make our Devices work for us.

"Opening camera by press hold camera key even when the phone is locked" this thing doesn't need a mention this feature is there in all Sony Phones from days of Xperia Arc and Xperia S (using ICS) and lockscreen widgets thing is optional u can just swipe and enter your phone normally like old 4.1.2 So why complain?
Daydream is also a new feature.
