Hi Guys,
hope i'm somehow right here and you are - more or less - interested in my concept/idea.
I didn't really know about this forum, but some guy in an other forum suggest i should post it here. Well... i do, don't know...
Anyway. Since the day i knew that WP7 wouldn't have any multitasking from the start, i was pretty sure how i would let it look like.
And a few days ago i saw the pictures of version 7753 with this search-button on the rightside and i realized, that MS could actually use that space.
So i decided that it would be time to visualize my thoughts, so here they are:
htt p://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5137/mulasking.png
Instead of the search-button i'd put a taskbar-icon at that place. Pressing the icon drops the actual taskbar with all running programms. By pressing an icon you can directly go into the programm/app, by pressing and holding the icon you can close it. And with the little up-showing arrow you can close the taskbar.
I also made the mail-hub a "wide-hub" (don't know how to call it...). First of all, i love those "wide-hubs", but it would also be nice, to see who wrote your latest recieved email and whats the topic is.
And last but not least i would like to split the zune-functions. I use the zune-hub basicly for listing to my music for example, so it would be nice, to sort out that function and create a music-tile on the homescreen. This could also work with videos, podcasts etc.
And... while i was in the mood i made some customization-concepts. I tried to keep all basic Metro-elemnts and just improve some things.
The transparancy is not knew, i know that it was introduced in an earlier conecpt by someone else, but it's a nice idea and i'd just love to see something like that. Of course it only make sense, if you can put pictures or at least gradients (like in the mentioned concept) on your homescreeb background.
htt p://img846.imageshack.us/img846/1870/custom.png
At last i thought about some all-over-themes, where you can't individually customize your UI, but use themes. For exempale i love the zune-look with, which is why i even made three different zune-themes.
htt p://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7904/themesl.png
C&C is of course appreciated... in any way.
And sorry if i'm totaly wrong here.
Buddy i can not see the pictures...It says to login to imageshack! Please Upload them somewhere else or you can upload them here.
Regards.
No. I'm a first-time-poster so i can't put outgoing links into my posts. At least as long as i havn't made 8 posts. ;-)
But i put a [space] between the htt_p. Thats why those links won't work with simple copy-paste. You just have to erase that little space there and the links will work.
At least they do it for me and i also have no imageshack-account. o.0
I can see the pictures okay. It makes good use of the blank space below the "next screen" arrow in WP7.
Maybe this is why Microsoft left the area blank The only thing I do not like is the way you did the close menu. I would do it like the OS has the menu system - bottom. It would also give you more options.
Can you give me wallpaper on the second slide?
wow! i think your concept of multitasking is fantastic! i really like the way it looks and its a very smart use of the space on the right of the home screen!
Looks really good! But what if you want to switch while being in an app?
I can see the wide eMail icon come really soon! Hopefully ;-)

Ditto to your comment. I was wondering the same thing about switching within an app.
After all, having return to the home screen is what we CURRENTLY must do... There's no advantage in this unless you can call up the task manager from within any app.

well honestly i wouldn't have a problem with it. by the time multitasking comes out we will be so accustomed to returning to the home screen to do anything so it wouldn't be much of a hassle

This is just adding a second set of tiles to the homescreen. That's it. Unless there's some way to open that taskmanager up within any app- it's no different than what there currently exists.

yea i can see what you mean. opening the multitasking in an app would be nice. but it would not affect me to have to return to the home screen
Yeah, you're right. That was, was I was kinda missing.
But here is where the actual multitasking that MS showed before could come to work again. While you're in an app you press the back-button a litte bit longer. What than shows up could look like it does now in the "officel concept", or maybe like this...
htt p://img839.imageshack.us/img839/4185/multi2d.png
... just a quick idea.
I'll have a second thought about it.
And thanks for all the comments anyway. Made my at least think of something i obviously forgott.

Agreed.
I like the minimalist use of that side space, but I'm not sure a multi-tasking menu there is any improvement over the Mango demos. However, it might be a decent space for a "recent app" history bar, a toggle-able notification menu (a la Android/WebOS), or something along those lines.

i do have to say that is a fine idea. keeps all the tiles as the are on in the games area (like how if you enter multitasking on iOS the icons pop up with the same size as if they were on the main screen). so yea everything stays equal. both ideas are great! would be awesome to see microsoft impement one of them!
Very cool work! All of these are pretty realistic additions and I hope Microsoft eventually does something like this.
Your multitasking and customisation concepts look really good. I'd love to have multitasking like this.
After all, I would start the taskmanager by longpressing the Windows-button too.
Official concept says it will be longpressing the back-button but in my opinion you'll need the taskmanager more often than this useless voicecommand.
since ms is not yet done with their own concept of mt., i hope they are still open to other great suggestions such as this one. it maximizes the blank space on the right side, simple and neat. its a great concept. hope what they have presented in mwc will not be the final code for mt. they need to think of ways on how to simplify it and one good example is this one.
there are also pic in wmpoweruser about themes and transparent tiles

good job on the concept.

Pay attention on this. Seriously.
The multitasking concept is absolutely brilliant.
Fits to metro in a much nicer way than these webOS cards.

One app I would like to see when WP7 comes out is a good, functional, yet nice looking IP calculator. This is the one that I use for my class, but it isn't for WM nor (obviously) for WP7. http://www.radmin.com/products/utilities/ipcalculator.php
I have tried getting someone to port the iPhone version http://www.addressplus.net/iphone/ipcalc/ because it looks pretty, but have gotten no responses either here or over at modaco. If someone could make a great ip calculator for WP7 then you would definitely have at least one buyer when WP7 comes out lol. (a WM 6.5.5 version to tide me over would be great too lol)
Subnet Calculator
I figured I'd give this a shot. Here's a few screenshots of what I've got so far:

It's all working pretty well at the moment. Clicking any of the buttons will bring up a popup list of the values to select from and you can drag the sliders to adjust the settings as well.
I'm thinking of setting it up so when you swipe the screen left/right it will go to the previous/next subnet and maybe adding a main page where you can select from a class/classless calculator.
If I have sometime later tonight I'll try to make a video of it running in the emulator.
Not bad, the idea is there. I think you need some more spacing between elements to make it proper touch friendly, but looks like we got a handy app for sys-admins here!
Yeah. There's definitely not much room for fat fingers on there right now :-( I think the lists could use a little more padding between the values, and maybe there could be a little more space between the buttons and the Subnet Bits slider. It's difficult to tell what's too close for sure without playing with it on an actual device, but I should probably take another look at the design guidelines (I remember reading something about the recommended minimum spacing between elements).
Anyways, here's a quick video of it in action. The emulator runs kinda crappy on my laptop because I don't have hardware assisted virtualization, so I apologize if anything looks choppy (could just be my amateur code too, hehe).

Nice work man.
That is totally awesome! I am glad someone decided to give it a go, now I really can't wait for WP7

Yup. I added the main page where you can select the type of calculator. Right now I'm pulling out the code that can be shared between the two calculators into a separate class.
I rearranged the way you select the subnet class and enter the IP address as well. The class selection is now a button with a popup menu like the Subnet Mask, etc, and the IP address is now a single textbox as opposed to the 4 separate textboxes.
I'll post an updated video once I have everything working again.
awesome. This is going to be a huge help to us net-admins. Doing subnetting is annoying as hell without the calculator lol
any updated video or screens?
Yup. Here's a quick screenshot of what it's looking like now. Now that the official pivot controls are out, I'm toying with the idea of making the calculator mode selection a pivot...

looking good can't wait, sadly I have to wait until verizon gets WP7, but when It does (hopefully when the LTE 4G is active) then I will definitely be getting this app . One thing I might put, instead of Classed and Classless, I would put Classful and Classless. I was taught that it was refered to as classful when all the subnets have the same mask. Other than that, looks awesome!!!
Haha, showing my ignorance I suppose :'( names fixed
cool that is awesome. Thanks again for doing this.

I suppose I need to register for MarketPlace first, and then it would be available at the release of WP7.
In regards to WM6.5...I'd need to rewrite the application since WP7 development is a different beast. I'll look into the amount of work that would be required to port it, and if it's not too bad, I'll release it in the WM Development thread as well.

Gotta wonder why they keep going that way instead of an "Exposé"-like approach. I mean, in webOS since the "cards" could be interacted with. Here it just feels like a waste of screen real estate...
I guess it's because they want to make individual task previews as large as possible when there are there many tasks to choose from.

I personally don't like this. wp7 is hassle free right now, the last thing on earth I want is yet another "task manager" or having to close apps to make sure they're not eating memory or battery or...

Maybe I'm not understanding it right, and it wouldn't be keeping apps open, just keeping your spot open in where you were with the app.

I don't think they have gone into enough detail of how it works. It could be like iOS or it could be like Android. We'll probably have to wait til MIX to see.
Honestly Figured MS would implement a task switching feature like this. Either similar to Cards in WebOS or the 6 previous you see in Android when you hold down the home button

Wooo-Hoooo! A real multitasking! Out-friggin-standing! I'm so excited I'm as giddy as a school girl...hehe
This MT is every bit as good as the WebOS MT.
Hopefully we can manually "turn on" apps we want to keep running in the background.
Optimistic me believes MS recognizes the issues of task managers in WinMo and Android and has some sort of fix worked out.
This is wonderful and im sure will be improved upon

Is it really multitasking? I saw a video on youtube and lost my erection a little bit.
First he talked about how "fast" it was to switch back to a game and showed a demo. Click back button, do stuff go back to the game and it is paused. Click continue and it starts immediately.
Then he showed off how to display the list of multiple apps by holding the back button and scrolling through them.
Then he mentions even 3rd party music applications will be allowed to play music even after the user switches screens "like Microsoft's music player".
This is great!

Yeah but notice he isn't actually going into anything else. He keeps saying "yadda yadda do whatever I want, then just press back! It's so easy!"
What he's not showing is that now the cache will have the phone "app", the sms app, and maybe something else in its memory. It won't know that you want to go back to the game. So you'll be cycling through stuff before getting back to it.
But you can probably just skip that with a long-press back button
Erm, what? Did you miss the middle part where he jumps between 2 games and e-mail by holding "back"? Or am I not getting your point?
sounds like fast app switching form what he is saying... no idea how it works but its perfect for me as long as apps which require a connection can just stay connected and updated like an IM app for example. It would be **** if you have to sign in again

No, that was me not watching the whole thing. Open mouth, insert foot.
There are many, many (and more to come) new featurs in 7.5 and I love them all!
But I miss something in WP 7.5 (7.10.7712.60):
(red marked)
1.
Was nice when listening to long audiofiles. (also on lockscreen)
WP7___________________________________________________WP7.5
2.
The "search website" features is missing
3.
Please MS, let us change the reload icon/button to the tabs or favorites icon/button!
4.
The Imagequality when uploading from picture hub to Facebook is horrible now!
5.
The colors have been renamed. i.a. limettengrün to lindgrün.
Some (all?) of them (I noticed it on limettengrün/limegreen) are less colorful
Do U miss more features from WP7.5 that was in 7?
6.
Several Members: Transparent lockscreen wallpapers gone (IMO this isn't a cut feature, some of us just used a glitch...)

I have to agree about the browser. It's not a make or break problem for me, but is kind of annoying to have that extra step. I also wish they'd give IE a Forward/Back Button instead of using the hardware Back button. Would be nice for the URL to be on top & auto-hide, swipe down to show it in portrait & landscape. Make it thicker since it'd auto hide. Just my 2 cents on it.
Also, don't like them (MS) breaking homebrew native app (INTEROPSERVICES). That is a big deal for me. That's the main reason I'm not using the Beta2. The new features are nice, but the lack of homebrew kills it for me.

Don't like the sense-esque weather or how busy it is as it'd muck up the UI but I like the concept, just too busy for metro.
Yup, a lot of these concepts don't take into account the amount of work the WP7 design team has put in to making the Metro UI uncluttered, simple and yet so stylish..
too busy and would look very out of place with the clean styling of the Metro UI
Looks like Android to me...
I love it - looks great and functional too.
Yes Metro UI is uncluttered, but unfortunately that means lists of white text on a black background...again and again. It's easy to use but boring to look at - reminds me of an old DOS terminal!

Did you seriously just copy "Notification Center" from iOS 5 right down to the name?
In any case, it looks good. But I'm not sure Microsoft wants to go the down-swipe route. Maybe swipe right to a pane to the left of the start screen?
Or even an extra button on the start screen to go to a Notification Hub. The App list has Search, the Home Screen can have the notification button with a number inside the bubble. I think taht would be elegant and the most unintrusive way to add it in.
In the Hub you can have Notifications and Reminders, however if you have to go to the Notification Hub to get reminders you're already somewhat failed there The OS supports Tasks and To-Dos with half-screen notifications/reminders. There's no need for that pane, IMO.
I am sort of pissed that Microsoft didn't make toasts a rolling 3D box like Apple did in iOS, though... They really need to add a bit more 3D to the OS. It's way way too flat IMO. Almost painstakingly so.
Your Skype thing bought an issue to mind. Why doesn't the message hub in Mango have a graphic or text to tell you your online status? After all, the phone does not log you on automatically when you [re]boot it up.
The music playback controls there are thoroughly unnecessary since they're easily accessible by just pressing a volume key. Waste of space.
I actually think the bubble (Notifications for Start, Search for App list in same spot) would be a better solution than a gesture. Some apps take over that top area and I'm not sure how the phone will handle it when you have UI elements up there that need to be tapped or dragged.
Looks like Android not Windows Phone!
Way to busy, Metro is an elegant yet minimalist UI. This concept looks like a breed between Android and Windows Mobile. With Nokia now contributing to the actual OS I believe the 3rd page concept found on Meego will/should make the jump (minus twitter and facebook since they're already in the People hub).

I much prefer your other concepts
I like the idea of a swipe down for a metro list of recent notifications though...that's a priceless idea and seems to flow properly within the windows 8 ecosystem
I think you are missing the point.
Ignore the background and additional applications etc. The notifications themselves look great and an idea I was thinking about.
If you don't code this up, I will

very wrong imo. A swipe down where? Lock screen? That's not very convenient, home screen? We swipe up and down to navigate the menu. The most viable option is a third table.

@Peew971 : I didn't create it , one of our designers ( Yanko ) worked on the design

look really good then.
Time to do some Apple Siri-Comparing!
Just Downloaded v1 from the marketplace out of curiosity. Definately needs some help with accuracy lol
I like positive news and this is positive, WP needs to keep up the good work and listen to what we want and need, if they do then I can see them reaching their goals in 2015 but if the don't then, well... it's not good and you all know how I feel about that so I'll spare you my complaining.
The new update looks awesome..cant wait for it..And the best part is that it is totally free!

Agreed, I read some where that the dev of this app has actually been trying to get Ziggy to do more but you know MS and their damned restricted API's. I'n my opinion they need to hire this guy.
The screenshots look cool. I may dl it again.
I tried it before, and 90% of the time the response was just "would you like to do a websearch for that" or whatever it says.
I could save myself time and a couple steps by just voice-searching Bing.

I know I hardly use it my self, I'll use it from time to time to entertain my self for a few laughs but it's great to see it evolve. You have to give it to the dev of the app; he has to improve it even with the MS restrictions.
I really don't like it when developers use a panorama design and put "Settings" as a screen to swipe to. They really should put the settings in the app bar. If he only wants the microphone icon in the app bar then add the settings to the "more" 2 dots part.
Otherwise I'm looking forward to this update!

LOL, I think he did it that way because people asked him to make it more metrofied.
Much better design and definitely if Microsoft know what they doing, they would hire this dude. These are people that are ready to dedicate their full time to Windows Phone.

Then he should look closely at how MS design their panorama apps. Settings are always in the app bar in People hub, messaging, xbox live hub, calender etc
Generally when a user swipes along a panoramic screen its to see more content. Settings isn't more content. Most users don't even fiddle with it each time they launch the app unless they need to change something, so therefore dedicating an entire panoramic screen to it is bad design and not metro.
That is my opinion

+1
It's the case with so many major app developers. It's the mindset from other OSes. That brings us to badly developed apps argument. There is always an app for what we need, if not official, a client - majority of the times. But most apps are so horribly metrofied that it's mortifying. Making apps esp free ones, is an amazing task! But then full hearted approach to match the metro concept will streamline an user's experience and they will love your app more. Else someone too choosy about how his phone looks might find distasteful breaks in his streamline experience. Most WP users gotta be choosy with UI, why else would you love this new UI so much!?
May be people here won't agree, but this is what I generally consider as a factor whether any particular app will stay on my WP. In my WM and Android days, that wasn't an issue because OS UI was ugly anyway. But can't let the UI experience be ruined just because I want some functionality of an app that I might only use once a week or once a month!
Oh this looks so much better. I'm not a big fan of how it looks right now.
I do agree with previous comments about settings. A whole screen to swipe to is uneccessary. Put it in the bar.
I can agree Ziggy looks dirty. I hope developer ask some designers to help him make ui better.
Function over finesse. It's more important to get the core working well, than to tweak the look and feel.
For the most part the real use is a 1 button deal. Make it listen. Make it stop and process.
The app without a function update was only a cool concept, but not much worked properly. Since it is a 1 person team, I am glad the focus is on getting it to function properly.
Once the guts are working properly, it can be delivered. Then, we will have a great functional app while the user interface tweaks are done. Then we will have a superb app.
