The other day I saw this in Titanium backup "AP Mobile" I looked it up but the only thing I saw was on the app store and it was an Associated Press app wich I don't have installed. Does anyone know what this is? And is it meant to make you think that it its something that its not?
Is it safe to remove?

AP mobile is like this media mobile site crap. Its safe to remove and get rid of once and for all!
its the associated press news app i believe. i also removed it immediately
1. Is there a list of crap we can safely remove?
2. Why can T-Mobile still monitor bandwidth usage on a rooted stock ROM after killing the monitoring apps / processes, but on some custom roms data usage cannot be monitored once the apps /processes are killed?

I'm sure t-mobile monitors data usage on their end, not by collection information from processes on your phone... otherwise I think everyone would be using this mythical custom rom and the 200mb data plan!

No. I thought that too until I saw it in person. The guy who showed me was using the Darkside ICS rom for the T989 from the AT&T Skyrocket port. He killed a few processes and presto. No more data usage monitoring. And trust me, I have been a Unix system Admin for years. I was shocked.

Not exactly sure, it was some networking WNIC related apps. He did not even change the APN from the default T-mobile one like most people do to break the cap, and further, I dont think he change the directory permissions that most people do to eliminate capping.
The only other way I was aware of the cap being broken prior to this was via changing the APN to that of an MVNOs.
All I ask in exchange for this information is, if you try this, please report your findings and or results to me regardless of whether or not you want to do so publicly on the forum.

TL;DR - He doesn't know because it can't be done. All data tracking is done on t-mobile's end.
Despite your encounter with that other persons phone it would be logical to think that their own towers should be able to track how much data is being extracted and to which assigned sim card and not getting the information from your phone which can be easily fondled with.
If it was easy as eliminating a few processes and tweaks, I'd say they better fire all those who implemented the data usage tracking system because they will be losing out on a massive revenue.

The three processes had to do with the Wireless NIC. All I can say is that once they were killed there was absolutely zero data usage reported. I have seen it done only on the Darkside rom. I have never seen it done on any other rom. It makes absolutely no sense to me why it works.
I agree with you guys that only an idiot would implement the data usage monitoring software on the Customer Provisioned Equipment, but I saw what I saw as crazy as it sounds.
My jaw literally dropped. I doubt it was fake unless I was somehow hoaxed, which would be very hard considering my background, but it is always a possibility.
The least we can do is look into it.

What can I use or how can I stop there since I seem to not need it.

So I don't know the exact behavior of every single Task Manager, nor do I know what you mean by stopping the DRM(Digital Rights Management?) services.
For one, that sounds like an issue associated with pirateing, which is not tolerated for discussion here at XDA Devlopers.
And so to probably answer your question:
Especially with an Eclair 2.1 version of Android, Task Managers are not able to kill processes immediately as they are created. I know the one that I use only kills the Auto-Kill listed apps when I turn the screen off. So your Task Manager may not be able to successfully kill the aforementioned DRM process.
Hope that helps. Don't pirate. At least don't make it obvous...
Just use titanium backup to freeze the drm services. And he's not wanting to stop it fire piracy issues, its a known issue that drm services cause a huge battery drain on our phones

What i do is, i created a custom shortcut to settings - running services. Tap the icon, click the process. No extra killers needed. I do it once per boot.. and, having tried a million other methods, this works the best.
Doesn't freezing it in titanium cause the same problems as if it was removed?

Yes, I have an Epic. If you use the desktop website you'll see it in my sig.
I haven't come across this DRM process issue yet, although I've only had my Epic for about two weeks. Regardless of the fact, when I do see problems I might be able to help with I will do my best to contribute.
Edit: Let me attempt to clarify what I have said.
I never guessed to check my processes, and whaddya know it's right there staring me right in the face.
The thing is task managers like Task Manager (which is what I use) only can target running apps. In case that wasn't apparent.
This process is starting along with the Android System, so unless you decide you don't want the system to start when the phone boots, it will start it every time.
The point is that task managers like Task Manager, cannot, and will not terminate processes other than its own, because (obvously for security reasons) the API for that behavior does not exist.
/lecture ^-^"
And I would imagine freezing it would cause issues. Just like decalex said. It does perhaps have a purpose.

Great find mate. I'd LOVE to see them try to argue that in court:
"well, your honor, the defendant found our secret software and then found our training manuals and posted mean stuff online."
"what exactly is the full scope of capabilities of your software? Do you have the ability to read private messages?"
"Umm, well, yes. Yes we can do that. But we have consent from the carriers!"
"but not from the people's whose information you are siphoning. Also, where did the defendant find these alleged manuals?"
"Umm well on our website."
"public website?"
"yes. Well... Yes. But we have since removed them so he is infringing on our copyright by still having them!"
"so he defendant discovered that your software spies on users without their consent, knowledge, or ability to stop it and then found on your website manuals that explained how your spyware works. Now you want the judicial system to punish him for exposing your company's illicit monitoring of the public? Not going to happen."

Companies like Carrier-IQ are a plague to our privacy.
It's one thing to create and provide (at a price) software to carriers that steals private information, but to try and threaten/ruin a person for talking about it shows a real "Big Brother" mentality IMO.
I hope this is the beginning of a major change in how the rights of the consumer are protected when it comes to the collection of information. We have the right to be informed as to what is being collected from our most private devices and to opt out should we choose (which most of us will..)
Carrier-IQ is the equivalent to digital theft, no question about it. It's happening without disclosure, without permission, and it's purposely hidden from the average consumer who would have no way to discover this for themselves.
Look at how upset Carrier-IQ is over what was PUBLIC information being "collected" from their website? Imagine if we were stealing the private data from their site/personal devices and being paid for doing it!

Just freeze it or uninstall it with Titanium Backup.
It's the app "System Manager" ironically. Check the process in your running services (Settings > Applications > Running Services)
You'll see "System Manager" and when you click on it, it will show you something like "com.tmobile.carrierIQ" (I forget exactly since I froze the app about a week ago.)
It does not affect the phone in any negative way, it actually runs slightly better now IMO
Wow, it never ceases to amaze me the stealthy things like this that software companies come up with, and then are outraged when everyone finds out and wants it gone.

I frankly don't care about advertising too much. I worry about them having massive amount of my data while ready and willing to hand it over to any governing body. Add to that the usually poor and easily overcome security measures in place to "safegaurd" our precious data. I seriously doubt they have the same security measures in place as what they use for their top secret products and software. Anyways yea eventually it all boils down to the basics, it is wrong to do this without consent, and don't tell me the contract is consent because i doubt it is clearly outlined there. I like my privacy and that is one fo the reasons I don't use facebook. the worst part is that they are not clear about what they do and don't gather, how long they keep it, what it is used for explicitly, what measures are being taken to prevent a leak, etc...

i just wanted to point out this comment by jordo_99 to that article...
jordo_99 said:
Since there seem to be people trying to inform everyone else about how this works I'm just going to explain it to you all...
1) ad blockers will block the ad request from being sent out to the internet...there is still a line of code from the app saying "buahaha, show these asshats my ad" but AdFree is all like "I pity the foo who has to look at ads. Access DENIED!"
2) Such "ad requests" are put out infrequently----meaning infrequently to a computer...so probably every few minutes or however often the ad would change...some apps will only show 1 ad per launch...some cycle regularly so it's always different. Regardless a few lines of code requesting an ad is very insigificant.
3) because the request is denied by the ad blocker (and preventing the phone from initiating a data signal) your battery usage is negligible at best...the few lines of code per minute that are being parsed and then denied are as insignificant and a few blades of grass on your lawn as far as your phone is concerned.
4) The display on any phone is what uses the most battery life...then radio/GPS signals...no exceptions. If your phone is in a locked state then ad requests are disabled. This is how Android OS works.
5) If you're on your phone NOT using a data connection is the only time when this is applicable...and that's IF you do NOT have an ad blocker (which is the majority of phones). Even then...the data signal caused by the ad request is insignificant to the battery cost of the screen.
6) The article itself even mentions that the "energy required" is only comparing ad requests to the rest of the apps commands...it's not comparing this to the OS energy use or display or radio signals...etc. If you aren't familiar with how much battery use a single app uses then you should know that at best these ad requests are going to be less than 4% at a very generous estimation.
7) This Mario guy should probably read the article he's summarizing before he actually posts about it
Considering all of the following...you have to be a non-rooted, non-AdFree (or other ad blocking app) user that is using the phone without any other app using a data connection for this to even be applicable...I'd say that's going to be a very small majority of people. I don't see many people being rooted and having AdFree installed to counter this...but I would be very surprised if someone is on their phone without using a data signal for enough of their usage to even make this worth mentioning.
****Cliff Notes****
ad requests are only a very small percentage of your battery use...This Mario guy didn't even read the article before posting his completely mis-leading title. The 70% estimation is comparing the energy of the ad request vs the application's battery use...which is very small. Additionally, your radio signals (the reason this figure is so high) are likely to be in use already and therefore not affected anyway.

I disagree. I'm noticing signficantly less drain on idle and during app usage. My Data Manager tells you there's always some data transfer occuring during idle. And anytime a 4G signal is pinged for anything the battery takes a nosedive. Any opportunity to prevent a needless data connection (on 4G) is a good one.

but does it tell you where that data request is originating? more likely it's push for gmail or something like that than an ad in an app when the screen is locked...
during app usage, sure blocking the ads will reduce radio usage and thus power, but nothing noticeable... especially compared to the screen. on idle, that's all placebo.
If any radio is being used, it will use power. If you can stop unwanted radio use, your battery will last longer. Basically if you put your phone in airplane mode, and all your radios are off, your battery will last much longer. If alot of ad requests were made, like 50000 it would impact battery.

Can you summarise what jordo_99 has said? I dont really understand..
Jesus, this is like 1 year old news...
Thought this may be useful for everyone to have as the device does sadly have a tendency to be a bit laggy.
Have followed a few guides and got some great info from XDA so trying to give a little back if I can
From what I have done I have found no ill effects that I have noticed so far, all fairly obvious choices so early on, but will get braver as I get more used to the handset and I'm sure others have been more adventurous than me and can help bulk the list up a bit and we can do away with a whole bunch of bloat to get a smoother ride from out G3. Some of these I froze as I prefer other 3rd party apps.
Frozen/Removed
Cell Broadcast
E-Mail
Documents
File Manager
Internet/Stock Browser
LG Health
LG Search Widget Provider
LG Setup Wizard
McAfee Security
Messaging (stock)
Music
Video
Video Trim
Weather
Weather Theme
Weather Platform
If you have any other suggestions please post and and I'll add updates to Post 1 for easy reference :highfive:
Hope this helps some fellow G3 users

I think you should do a different list for the Google apps, the main attention people will give this thread is to find out what LG apps they can freeze and remove, most people will not be interesting in removing the Google apps from their devices.

Understood, you are most likely correct. Google Apps removed from list
If possible, can you post the real app name (the apk name in /system/app or /system/app-priv) ?
Thanks
Get my G3 later today. Thanks for the list! I'm completely new to Android, so how do I remove bloat ware?
you need to keep file manager if you wish to write to the extsd card
I've not been able to disable the mcafee software

I didn't find the apk by myself, but root uninstaller found somehow
Is freezing them through TB essentially a better version of hibernating them through Greenify?

They do different things. Freezing them is like uninstalling them - they are gone and won't work at all but can be retrieved by unfreezing. Greenifying them just hibernates them but they work as normal.

Also in system/vendor/app. Found some stuff in there that tibu couldn't get rid of. Here's most of what I froze. If it's not in my list of frozen apps I deleted it lol

Could we have a non-root list, and also a description of what gets disabled/broken for each one. E.g. what does Cell Broadcast do? (I've googled, I 'm now aware, not relevant currently in the UK).
ActionManager service? Board Content Provider?
I've found this list but most of the bloat on Verizon wasn't on mine, since I'm not in the US: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/list-bloatware-safe-to-disable-t2819370
I wonder if anyone has the time, patience, and good will to compile all of these threads into one master index?

I've noticed that the system doesn't allow you to disable everything if you're not rooted so maybe anything you are allowed to disable is safe to disable.

And how is everything working out after having disabled all those 3 weeks ago? Any anomalies or bad experiences? So far your screenshots give the best list of the removable apps (I'm completely new to LG so I don't know about their stock stuff), and I'd love to remove them but I'm afraid to experiment without a fully working recovery to restore nandroid.

Everything is working great. Battery life is spectacular. There are 0 negative results to report.

Awesome, thanks for the quick feedback! I just got a notification about a new downloadable software update (will not do it ofc), I suppose freezing the software update app will mean no more notifications and to setbacks either?

Correct. I have mine frozen to avoid receiving update notifications. Also this is good until you find out if the new update is rootable. If its not then its good to stick with the current software.

My list is almost this one of yours. Had to unfreeze some of those because it made the home screen very lagged.
Everything Google uninstalled or frozen for over 2 weeks. No problems or complaints.
thanks the development has really taken off for this great device
So I froze most of these. Will it free up memory or do I have to delete them? Kinda scared to delete them. I have nandroid backup, just hate to possibly have to restore when the phone is running good.
