Great find mate. I'd LOVE to see them try to argue that in court:
"well, your honor, the defendant found our secret software and then found our training manuals and posted mean stuff online."
"what exactly is the full scope of capabilities of your software? Do you have the ability to read private messages?"
"Umm, well, yes. Yes we can do that. But we have consent from the carriers!"
"but not from the people's whose information you are siphoning. Also, where did the defendant find these alleged manuals?"
"Umm well on our website."
"public website?"
"yes. Well... Yes. But we have since removed them so he is infringing on our copyright by still having them!"
"so he defendant discovered that your software spies on users without their consent, knowledge, or ability to stop it and then found on your website manuals that explained how your spyware works. Now you want the judicial system to punish him for exposing your company's illicit monitoring of the public? Not going to happen."

Companies like Carrier-IQ are a plague to our privacy.
It's one thing to create and provide (at a price) software to carriers that steals private information, but to try and threaten/ruin a person for talking about it shows a real "Big Brother" mentality IMO.
I hope this is the beginning of a major change in how the rights of the consumer are protected when it comes to the collection of information. We have the right to be informed as to what is being collected from our most private devices and to opt out should we choose (which most of us will..)
Carrier-IQ is the equivalent to digital theft, no question about it. It's happening without disclosure, without permission, and it's purposely hidden from the average consumer who would have no way to discover this for themselves.
Look at how upset Carrier-IQ is over what was PUBLIC information being "collected" from their website? Imagine if we were stealing the private data from their site/personal devices and being paid for doing it!

I was hoping for a DEV to port the App over for us so we can TURN OFF that annoying Carrier IQ from our phones

Just freeze it or uninstall it with Titanium Backup.
It's the app "System Manager" ironically. Check the process in your running services (Settings > Applications > Running Services)
You'll see "System Manager" and when you click on it, it will show you something like "com.tmobile.carrierIQ" (I forget exactly since I froze the app about a week ago.)
It does not affect the phone in any negative way, it actually runs slightly better now IMO

Wow, it never ceases to amaze me the stealthy things like this that software companies come up with, and then are outraged when everyone finds out and wants it gone.

We already have NOCIQ check in the developement section .

Just checked this path and in my running services I don't have this listed anywhere.

It would appear on my Telus variant (SGH-T989D) that there is no CIQ installed. Checked my running processes but also used the app TrevE made.

Freezing it doesn't work, the CarrierIQ process is still running in the background

Ran the app on Juggernaut 3.1 and Bullet kernel 2.7b and it found nothing.

Impossible for the System Manger to be running when frozen.. I froze it and it hasn't popped up in a week.

I saw it running with System tuner, it disappeared when I deleted it altogether.

I ran the logging test app on the stock Telus ROM and it doesn't appear to have carrierIQ at all ... which is pretty good.

Was this on the stock rom ? I can't find it on running processes or on titanium by name or the process string (ie com.xxxxxxxxz)

It's called System Manager (even more shady), it should be there because it's definitely on the stock rom unless you have a slightly modified stock rom with the bloat removed.

Carrier IQ removal

Can please somebody explain to an idiot like me, how
can I remove Carrier IQ from my T-mobile T989 using stock everything, except for root and some frozen bloatware?
I looked around and couldn't find any results.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I assume you have Titanium Backup?
If so, uninstall or freeze the "System Manager" app
This will not completely remove all traces due to the fact it is embedded in the Kernel.. you can flash a custom kernal but it's really not necessary. Once you've frozen or uninstalled "System Manager" Carrier IQ can no longer effectively function
You can also use a file explorer and remove: system/lib/libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so
Doing both will pretty much clean your phone of Carrier IQ, it will be unable to run.
Thank you for your help.
I have frozen the Manager (will it break something else?) and I have removed the '' lib iq.... ''.
The app Carrier IQ Detector stil tells me that I have it.
But I believe you that will be ineffectual now.
Thank you for your help.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
No, it will not break anything else. And yes, as I said it is embedded in the kernel so voodoo or other detectors will still show it present, but inactive.
And no problem, glad to help. Searching is a great way to find answers.. But I know sometimes it's easier to ask lol
Sent from my T989 hunting for Siri Connor
Please remember that a single update from the carrier will put it back into active and working status. I hope you didn't spend any money on that detector.
Sorry for the late reply.
Thank you for letting me know about the update
and I presume you are taking about ICS update and
not a minor one.
No I didn't pay anything for the detector, it is free
on the Play Store.

OK I can't delete system/lib/libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so and I've tried it using a file explorer (with ROOT permission) and terminal using SU and I get the following message "rm failed for libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so, Read-only file system"
Also I can't find System Manager. I do have an application I have frozen in Titanium called "System Manager Application 1.1" with a little pink gear icon. However apps like premiatul described still show carrier IQ listed but state "however it seems inactive". I'm concerned cause I'm still getting detection scores of 290 and 100 in the logcat information. Mind you I used to have a Nexus one and those numbers were all zero.
So the question is even though I can't delete the file like premiatul, and I have a different application listed frozen; am I still preventing that IQ garbage using my battery up?
You have to mount the folder read/write to delete the file, use root explorer. The option will be in the upper left corner when browsing system folder for the file
You will still show a score on voodoo but once you delete that file it will lower the score slightly. If you want you can uninstall system manager (and yes you froze the correct one) and it will lower the score significantly but you'll get continuous force closes until you reboot. No need IMO once frozen it cannot function regardless of how high your score is
Sent from my T989 hunting for Siri Connor
I highly doubt that removing of CarrierIQ is possible without gaining root because all files related to it are located in the system space which is read_only and protected from anyone but a root user.
You cannot run RootExplorer in system space unless it is run by a root.
In my experience cleaning IQ-tmobile-release-...apk and several associated files belonging to the carrierIQ removed running service and made it undetectable by the above mentioned app.

What does the process "AP Mobile" really do?

The other day I saw this in Titanium backup "AP Mobile" I looked it up but the only thing I saw was on the app store and it was an Associated Press app wich I don't have installed. Does anyone know what this is? And is it meant to make you think that it its something that its not?

AP mobile is like this media mobile site crap. Its safe to remove and get rid of once and for all!
its the associated press news app i believe. i also removed it immediately
1. Is there a list of crap we can safely remove?
2. Why can T-Mobile still monitor bandwidth usage on a rooted stock ROM after killing the monitoring apps / processes, but on some custom roms data usage cannot be monitored once the apps /processes are killed?

I'm sure t-mobile monitors data usage on their end, not by collection information from processes on your phone... otherwise I think everyone would be using this mythical custom rom and the 200mb data plan!

No. I thought that too until I saw it in person. The guy who showed me was using the Darkside ICS rom for the T989 from the AT&T Skyrocket port. He killed a few processes and presto. No more data usage monitoring. And trust me, I have been a Unix system Admin for years. I was shocked.

Not exactly sure, it was some networking WNIC related apps. He did not even change the APN from the default T-mobile one like most people do to break the cap, and further, I dont think he change the directory permissions that most people do to eliminate capping.
The only other way I was aware of the cap being broken prior to this was via changing the APN to that of an MVNOs.
All I ask in exchange for this information is, if you try this, please report your findings and or results to me regardless of whether or not you want to do so publicly on the forum.

TL;DR - He doesn't know because it can't be done. All data tracking is done on t-mobile's end.
Despite your encounter with that other persons phone it would be logical to think that their own towers should be able to track how much data is being extracted and to which assigned sim card and not getting the information from your phone which can be easily fondled with.
If it was easy as eliminating a few processes and tweaks, I'd say they better fire all those who implemented the data usage tracking system because they will be losing out on a massive revenue.

The three processes had to do with the Wireless NIC. All I can say is that once they were killed there was absolutely zero data usage reported. I have seen it done only on the Darkside rom. I have never seen it done on any other rom. It makes absolutely no sense to me why it works.
I agree with you guys that only an idiot would implement the data usage monitoring software on the Customer Provisioned Equipment, but I saw what I saw as crazy as it sounds.
My jaw literally dropped. I doubt it was fake unless I was somehow hoaxed, which would be very hard considering my background, but it is always a possibility.
The least we can do is look into it.

Allshare cast
Allshare play
Allshare service
AT&T * (everything starting with "AT&T" can be frozen)
ChatON
DeviceHelp
Flipboard
Kies* (everything starting with "Kies" can be frozen)
media hub

samsung browser syncadapter
samsung calendar syncadapter
samsung cloud data relay

SNS
stock daemon
swype (keyboard still works fine without swype support)
sysscope
tethering provision
vpn client
weather daemon

weather widget main
yahoo finance
yahoo news
YP Mobile
There are many other things that can be frozen - this (so far) is just a list of what I'm currently freezing
AT&T users: The "mobile hotspot" icon that shows up in your app drawer doesn't have it's own app that you can freeze. It appears to be something in the settings.apk (and you probably don't want to freeze that.)
FM Radio
There isn't one. Based on my research, the hardware either doesn't exist or isn't physically connected. No luck with spiritFM either. This matches what international users have found with the n7105 (international LTE note2)

I'm trying to figure out how to deodex a JB firmware... once I have that, I'll be uploading doing a few minor mods (and uploading them, of course.)
Another reason to go international if you don't have lte in your area.

Great info! However personally, I'd wait with freezing apps since android operating systems have a wakelock specifically designated for deleted/frozen apps. Why or what for? No clue, but it's there. I'll wait until I can actually remove them completely. Either way this phone's battery and performance is awesome out of the box, even with bloatware

No.. your off base there. deleted_wakelock has nothing whatsoever to do with a frozen app. A wakelock is actually a kernel structure. When an app cleans up after itself, the time it had in wakelock is added to the deleted_wakelocks counter.

1. It wouldn't show up in benchmarks, as benchmarks tend to grab exclusive use of the device (meaning the other stuff wouldn't matter.) As well, I don't believe in benchmarks - they are too easily compensated for.
2. By freezing unused services, they'll never start which means the phone doesn't hold them in memory (freeing memory), doesn't use processor cycles to load/reload/execute them which will result in a lower battery usage (depending on the specific service) and allow the phone to "feel" faster in some cases.
3. Finally, freezing stuff that you don't use cleans up the app drawer. Why would anyone want an icon (even if they don't use it) for AT&T's navigation software when google gives us the same thing for free? (Freezing it also prevents someone else from using it if you loan them your phone.)
Of course, the idea of this thread isn't to discuss the merits of freezing bloat (or the merits of urinating when the need arises.) The idea is to let people know what is "safe" to freeze (and give other device information.)
As a guy coming out of the Apple iOS world, I have to say that the only Android device I've held is my wife's Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, and I'm not familiar with the terms "app drawer" or "freezing" apps. Can I ask for a little clarification without sounding like the total noob I am, please?

(I hope you take this with the humor intended...)
No, there is simply no possible way for you to ask that without sounding like a newbie. However, it's okay... we were all newbies at one time.
"app drawer" - in iOS, every app you install leaves an icon on your homescreen (or one of the homescreens.) That isn't the case with android. In android, YOU decide what your homescreen looks like - you can have app icons, widgets, or just leave them blank. There is usually an icon on the homescreen that lets you access your "app drawer" which contains all the phone apps. On the note2 with default configuration, thats the checkerboard looking icon on the lower right of the homescreen.
freezing - using an application such as "titanium backup", you can "freeze" an app. This is a way to basically completely disable and hide an application without physically uninstalling it. The only effective difference between a frozen app and one that's actually uninstalled is that the frozen app still can be "defrosted" (which restores it to normal.) freezing apps requires that your phone is rooted (which is a topic for another thread...)

The " app drawer" is the location on android that has your application launch icons (and widges). If you delete the app icon on the desktop you can gain access to the installed app here. You can grab a copy from the tray to deposit on other desktop pages.
The term "freezing" is a method to make installed apps dormant and thus not "call home" or use CPU cycles / memory resources that drain power or use data. These are usually done in preparation in determining what apps to un-install. Un-installing bundled applications may leave you no way to re-install them later, short of re-flashing to stock ROM.
Most folks will attempt to freeze apps to remove "bloatware". Later the storage can be reclaimed by un-installing the apps. By freezing, you can avoid "burning a bridge" you may find you need later.
Dynamite answers, thanks. I'm familiar with that app drawer, just didn't know its name, and the requirement of root for a freezing app will be juuust a bit down the road until I can understand the new OS environment.

Apps that can be safely Frozen or Removed

Thought this may be useful for everyone to have as the device does sadly have a tendency to be a bit laggy.
Have followed a few guides and got some great info from XDA so trying to give a little back if I can
From what I have done I have found no ill effects that I have noticed so far, all fairly obvious choices so early on, but will get braver as I get more used to the handset and I'm sure others have been more adventurous than me and can help bulk the list up a bit and we can do away with a whole bunch of bloat to get a smoother ride from out G3. Some of these I froze as I prefer other 3rd party apps.

If possible, can you post the real app name (the apk name in /system/app or /system/app-priv) ?
Thanks
Get my G3 later today. Thanks for the list! I'm completely new to Android, so how do I remove bloat ware?
you need to keep file manager if you wish to write to the extsd card
I've not been able to disable the mcafee software

I didn't find the apk by myself, but root uninstaller found somehow
Is freezing them through TB essentially a better version of hibernating them through Greenify?

They do different things. Freezing them is like uninstalling them - they are gone and won't work at all but can be retrieved by unfreezing. Greenifying them just hibernates them but they work as normal.

Also in system/vendor/app. Found some stuff in there that tibu couldn't get rid of. Here's most of what I froze. If it's not in my list of frozen apps I deleted it lol

Could we have a non-root list, and also a description of what gets disabled/broken for each one. E.g. what does Cell Broadcast do? (I've googled, I 'm now aware, not relevant currently in the UK).
ActionManager service? Board Content Provider?
I've found this list but most of the bloat on Verizon wasn't on mine, since I'm not in the US: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/list-bloatware-safe-to-disable-t2819370
I wonder if anyone has the time, patience, and good will to compile all of these threads into one master index?

I've noticed that the system doesn't allow you to disable everything if you're not rooted so maybe anything you are allowed to disable is safe to disable.

And how is everything working out after having disabled all those 3 weeks ago? Any anomalies or bad experiences? So far your screenshots give the best list of the removable apps (I'm completely new to LG so I don't know about their stock stuff), and I'd love to remove them but I'm afraid to experiment without a fully working recovery to restore nandroid.

Everything is working great. Battery life is spectacular. There are 0 negative results to report.

Awesome, thanks for the quick feedback! I just got a notification about a new downloadable software update (will not do it ofc), I suppose freezing the software update app will mean no more notifications and to setbacks either?

Correct. I have mine frozen to avoid receiving update notifications. Also this is good until you find out if the new update is rootable. If its not then its good to stick with the current software.

My list is almost this one of yours. Had to unfreeze some of those because it made the home screen very lagged.
Everything Google uninstalled or frozen for over 2 weeks. No problems or complaints.
thanks the development has really taken off for this great device
So I froze most of these. Will it free up memory or do I have to delete them? Kinda scared to delete them. I have nandroid backup, just hate to possibly have to restore when the phone is running good.

Latest update adds a new service that installs bloatware

A little bonus update For those Verizon Galaxy S7 users who are unaware http://www.smartphonesupdates.com/latest-verizon-update-galaxy-s7-galaxy-s7-edge/ not mentioned in the change log.
please share your thoughts about this service.
Ah, so that's what that is. DISABLED
Thanks for letting us know, I just checked and disabled it.
Something like this should be illegal. Disabled.

Thanks for this! I disabled it. I want my phone running as lean and mean as possible.
If you own the phone outright, paid in full, they should disclose what they are doing to it. I cleared and froze right after upgrading.
You all are welcome, i always try to share helpful info for my friends.
Thanks !

This was also present on S6 and forward. Not new, but this should never have been added in the first place. I don't want random games on my phone.
I tried to disable but asked "Would you like to replace app with factory version?" Is another app that does the same thing going to replace it? I can't disable DT ignite if I don't click yes

Its because DT ignite has updates installed. Click yes and it will put the "factory" non-updated version back on the phone. Then it will allow u to disable as normal.
Thanks so much for the find.
For those that may not have found it yet I have just started using Package Disabler Pro which let's you disable all of the verison and other bloatware without root...

DT ignite is a cancer waiting to spread. Forcing apps to install onto the device that has almost half its storage already taken by bloat. Haven't seen any apps besides the beam software install without my permission, had to install Nextradio manually ( which has annoying ads ). DT Ignite could one day install an app that can compromise your phones security due to programming flaws. All quickrooter exploits have been patched, however if it feels like a Trojan it is a Trojan
Just updated my VZ Galaxy S6 edge plus 64gb and this Cancerous AIDS is in that update as well. Before my eyes I had apps appearing like magic installing themselves one by one.
This is worse than most phones that have crap in their root preinstall folder that show up after every restart
Haven't had anything wacky installed, it's even installing an updated Instagram not from the Google play store
