Carrier IQ removal - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Can please somebody explain to an idiot like me, how
can I remove Carrier IQ from my T-mobile T989 using stock everything, except for root and some frozen bloatware?
I looked around and couldn't find any results.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I assume you have Titanium Backup?
If so, uninstall or freeze the "System Manager" app
This will not completely remove all traces due to the fact it is embedded in the Kernel.. you can flash a custom kernal but it's really not necessary. Once you've frozen or uninstalled "System Manager" Carrier IQ can no longer effectively function
You can also use a file explorer and remove: system/lib/libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so
Doing both will pretty much clean your phone of Carrier IQ, it will be unable to run.

Thank you for your help.
I have frozen the Manager (will it break something else?) and I have removed the '' lib iq.... ''.
The app Carrier IQ Detector stil tells me that I have it.
But I believe you that will be ineffectual now.
Thank you for your help.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

No, it will not break anything else. And yes, as I said it is embedded in the kernel so voodoo or other detectors will still show it present, but inactive.
And no problem, glad to help. Searching is a great way to find answers.. But I know sometimes it's easier to ask lol

Please remember that a single update from the carrier will put it back into active and working status. I hope you didn't spend any money on that detector.

Sorry for the late reply.
Thank you for letting me know about the update
and I presume you are taking about ICS update and
not a minor one.
No I didn't pay anything for the detector, it is free
on the Play Store.
Thanks for your help.

OK I can't delete system/lib/libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so and I've tried it using a file explorer (with ROOT permission) and terminal using SU and I get the following message "rm failed for libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so, Read-only file system"
Also I can't find System Manager. I do have an application I have frozen in Titanium called "System Manager Application 1.1" with a little pink gear icon. However apps like premiatul described still show carrier IQ listed but state "however it seems inactive". I'm concerned cause I'm still getting detection scores of 290 and 100 in the logcat information. Mind you I used to have a Nexus one and those numbers were all zero.
So the question is even though I can't delete the file like premiatul, and I have a different application listed frozen; am I still preventing that IQ garbage using my battery up?

You have to mount the folder read/write to delete the file, use root explorer. The option will be in the upper left corner when browsing system folder for the file
You will still show a score on voodoo but once you delete that file it will lower the score slightly. If you want you can uninstall system manager (and yes you froze the correct one) and it will lower the score significantly but you'll get continuous force closes until you reboot. No need IMO once frozen it cannot function regardless of how high your score is

I highly doubt that removing of CarrierIQ is possible without gaining root because all files related to it are located in the system space which is read_only and protected from anyone but a root user.
You cannot run RootExplorer in system space unless it is run by a root.
In my experience cleaning IQ-tmobile-release-...apk and several associated files belonging to the carrierIQ removed running service and made it undetectable by the above mentioned app.

Great find mate. I'd LOVE to see them try to argue that in court:
"well, your honor, the defendant found our secret software and then found our training manuals and posted mean stuff online."
"what exactly is the full scope of capabilities of your software? Do you have the ability to read private messages?"
"Umm, well, yes. Yes we can do that. But we have consent from the carriers!"
"but not from the people's whose information you are siphoning. Also, where did the defendant find these alleged manuals?"
"Umm well on our website."
"public website?"
"yes. Well... Yes. But we have since removed them so he is infringing on our copyright by still having them!"
"so he defendant discovered that your software spies on users without their consent, knowledge, or ability to stop it and then found on your website manuals that explained how your spyware works. Now you want the judicial system to punish him for exposing your company's illicit monitoring of the public? Not going to happen."

Companies like Carrier-IQ are a plague to our privacy.
It's one thing to create and provide (at a price) software to carriers that steals private information, but to try and threaten/ruin a person for talking about it shows a real "Big Brother" mentality IMO.
I hope this is the beginning of a major change in how the rights of the consumer are protected when it comes to the collection of information. We have the right to be informed as to what is being collected from our most private devices and to opt out should we choose (which most of us will..)
Carrier-IQ is the equivalent to digital theft, no question about it. It's happening without disclosure, without permission, and it's purposely hidden from the average consumer who would have no way to discover this for themselves.
Look at how upset Carrier-IQ is over what was PUBLIC information being "collected" from their website? Imagine if we were stealing the private data from their site/personal devices and being paid for doing it!

Just freeze it or uninstall it with Titanium Backup.
It's the app "System Manager" ironically. Check the process in your running services (Settings > Applications > Running Services)
You'll see "System Manager" and when you click on it, it will show you something like "com.tmobile.carrierIQ" (I forget exactly since I froze the app about a week ago.)
It does not affect the phone in any negative way, it actually runs slightly better now IMO
Wow, it never ceases to amaze me the stealthy things like this that software companies come up with, and then are outraged when everyone finds out and wants it gone.
We already have NOCIQ check in the developement section .

Just checked this path and in my running services I don't have this listed anywhere.
It would appear on my Telus variant (SGH-T989D) that there is no CIQ installed. Checked my running processes but also used the app TrevE made.
Freezing it doesn't work, the CarrierIQ process is still running in the background
Ran the app on Juggernaut 3.1 and Bullet kernel 2.7b and it found nothing.

I saw it running with System tuner, it disappeared when I deleted it altogether.
I ran the logging test app on the stock Telus ROM and it doesn't appear to have carrierIQ at all ... which is pretty good.

It's called System Manager (even more shady), it should be there because it's definitely on the stock rom unless you have a slightly modified stock rom with the bloat removed.

First off Carrier IQ and HTC loggers are NOT pulled from Synergy RLS1!
When I use the "Logging Checker by TrevE" it stated that everything was removed:
CIQ not found - removed with app
No usage logs found - removed with app
but it still finds loggers:
data/data/com.android.htcprofile
anr_history.txt
If I delete the directory and reboot it just creates a new directory and txt file. How do I get rid of this? Should I even be worried about this?

One option for removing Carrier IQ on Android is to flash a custom ROM,with this option. Most will have removed Carrier IQ.
Another option is to get this app. It will tell you if Carrier IQ is on your device.
If it tells you that Carrier IQ is there, then the easiest way is to buy the premium version of the app from the Market. It costs $1, but the developer is legit (he’s actually the one who discovered Carrier IQ’s SMS keylogging).
I recommend searching for your specific device, as some phones haven’t been playing nicely with the removal app. If it doesn’t look good, then I'd recommend flashing a custom ROM instead.

That i'm not sure of,you would have to ask the developer or someone here.I'm sure someone will come along soon and help you.
Can't you just HTC .com to the host file?

[MOD] Properly disable Carrier-IQ

Carrier IQ doesn't actually turn off when you disable it (the setting is hidden under System Settings -> Back up and reset.) If you check ps, battery stats, etc you will see it is still running to gather private data and send it off.
Fortunately, it is easier to disable on SGSIII than other devices. No framework mods needed!
To completely disable it (and remove the option from settings) you just need to remove the apps from /system/app. (Freezing is not enough, as it will still run in the background.)
Just remove these 3 files from /system/app and reboot to wipe it out completely:
IQ-tmobile-release-unsigned.signed_TMO.apk
IQToggle.signed_TMO.apk
IQ_OOB_TMO.apk
(If you are feeling paranoid like me, you can just move them to a different directory - ie /system/app-bak. So long as they are gone from /system/app, Android won't run them.)
If you watch logcat on the first boot, you will see the permissions disappear:
W/PackageManager( 535): Removing dangling permission: com.carrieriq.tmobile.permission.IPC from package com.carrieriq.tmobile
And when you launch the backup page:
D/PrivacySettings( 967): Package not found : IQToggle
(The error shows on logcat, but the backup prefs work fine without it.)

I'd hesitate to remove the library (the only thing it detects after you pull the apps out) because something else might depend on it. If you have a working recovery its easy enough to test though - move it out of the way, reboot. If it bootloops, boot recovery and put it back. (And let me know so I can update the first post..)
I suggest using TB to uninstall the CIQ and other bloatware because it also removes the entry in /data/data. Otherwise, you have to do it manually.

Anything in 'ps' related to IQ? After removing the apps through Titanium and rebooting the service was still running (and it even showed in battery stats - https://twitter.com/disconn3ct/status/223401642077327361 has a screenshot)

The default 'mv' just calls the move syscall, which creates a link and removes the original. (That fails across different filesystems since you can't create hardlinks between them.)
'busybox mv' will do it th at way if it is the same filesystem, but if not it will do a full copy-and-remove. (Or just use a file manager, as you did..)
On my GS2, just freezing it in Titanium was enough. It never actively ran after that. The CIQ stuff embedded in the kernel was still present, but there was no activity or battery usage. Weird that it's still active after freezing it. I'll have to look into this and see what activity is actually going on, because I don't want to root this phone or delete anything just yet. Right now the standard ICS "disable" is working just fine on several things, and so I thought on CIQ as well.

T-Moble was forced to install CarrierIQ? Why are they suing?
It tracks your location, activity, browsing, sms/mms traffic, email etc etc etc without telling you and sends it to the carrier (and others.) Some of that data has good uses. (For example, the carrier can say "there are a lot of dropped calls near these towers, lets get more information from those devices - exact locations, etc - and see if we can fix it.") The majority of it is purely for marketing, advertising and so forth.
In exchange, you get lower battery life and no privacy. (Oh, and as an added bonus, it doesn't actually turn off when you disable it in the settings..)

Glad the same method still works. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, but I was going to suggest it..
Will unchecking it from Droid Wall do the trick temporarily?
Rooted and uninstalled these 3 in Titanium Backup:
"system manager toggle"
"system manager application"
"system manager notification"
Then I went to the /System/CSC/ folder in Root explorer and edited both the Feature.xml and Other.xml files
Using Root explorer you long press the on the filename until a menu comes up. Choose to open with Text editor.
The text is at the bottom.
<!-- CIQ -->
<CSCFeature_CIQ_BroadcastState>true</CSCFeature_CIQ_BroadcastState>
Change true to false in this section of BOTH of these files and save and reboot.
The old files before editing will be saved with a .bak extension.
Worked great for me.

Lets Talk Bloat

I running Stock Rooted PK1, I have Titanium Back up and root installed.. I went and removed a lot of bloat ware. But here is the issue I have with newer roms.. When your done and rebooted, I have notice the bloat icons are still there.. If you go and try to remove them exp. Google games, movies the only option you have is to turn it off.. What happened to Titanium actually removing all of that for you.. And I have also noticed when you uninstall it, you start to notice a lot of FC as well.. I have also tried this with stock rooted roms that have some of the bloat already removed, but no enough of it for me.. Has anyone here notice the same thing? Or what is the solution for this.. When I want to get rid of something on my system, I want it completely gone, not just part of it..
I'm disappointed. I thought this thread was going to be about Amy Schumer.

LOL sorry.
Chances are TB is just uninstalling the updates and not the app itself. Try manually checking in system\app or system\priv-app for a folder containing the application. If it's there delete it and reboot, that'll remove them permanently. Be careful though as some apps will begin a fc that won't go away even after reboot. Make a backup first.

If you remove Facebook with an app like titanium, you could possibly lose /system/lib/libgnustl_shared.so which has been known for a long time to cause loss of rotation. Why that happens going way back in KitKat, I dunno. Just like I dunno why titanium update zip needs user edit since Lollipop. Great app but needs some work.
You could copy and save /system/lib/libgnustl_shared.so before removing Facebook since you're on stock so you have it to restore, if lost. Or get it from your Note 4 ROM zip if flashed.
I'm usually very conservative with bloat removal. Try freezing and check for effects before uninstalling; you know what to check now.
I'm more concerned about the apps that auto run in background without user launching so watch for that. Useless apps take resources away from rooted users; most likely you want to make resources available for custom apps. So make room for them. Debloat makes sense as long as you're not removing function.
