ive been talking to htc support via email and they tell me that carrier iq isnt shipped on the DZ.
ive still got the emails and webpages saved in-case they are full of crap but as my is still not rooted, i cant check and i have to take their word for it.
if someone does find it on the dz, ill be very unimpressed
Rooted T-Mobile G2 with Cyanogen 6.1.1
Used TrevE's app version 7.0. No CIQ found. Looks like good ol' cyanogen also removed some behavior tracking processes and logging to make the ROM even more secure.
I don't have a stock rooted ROM so I cannot verify if it's on the stock ROM, but most of us use cyanogen's stuff anyway, so I'm hoping it'll calm some people's minds.
Just adding to the comment above, this was just posted CyanogenMod will never have Carrier IQ

Cyanogen didn't remove it because it wasn't there in the first place; CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, CIQ is an application carriers add in to their build of Android.

I frankly don't care about advertising too much. I worry about them having massive amount of my data while ready and willing to hand it over to any governing body. Add to that the usually poor and easily overcome security measures in place to "safegaurd" our precious data. I seriously doubt they have the same security measures in place as what they use for their top secret products and software. Anyways yea eventually it all boils down to the basics, it is wrong to do this without consent, and don't tell me the contract is consent because i doubt it is clearly outlined there. I like my privacy and that is one fo the reasons I don't use facebook. the worst part is that they are not clear about what they do and don't gather, how long they keep it, what it is used for explicitly, what measures are being taken to prevent a leak, etc...

I think people that are new to this get some crazy idea that when you root, there are tons of these crazy apps that only root users have access to. Its really just a small group of apps that expand the functionality of the phone, and chances are you probably have aquired a good amount of them along your journey to obtain root.

Great find mate. I'd LOVE to see them try to argue that in court:
"well, your honor, the defendant found our secret software and then found our training manuals and posted mean stuff online."
"what exactly is the full scope of capabilities of your software? Do you have the ability to read private messages?"
"Umm, well, yes. Yes we can do that. But we have consent from the carriers!"
"but not from the people's whose information you are siphoning. Also, where did the defendant find these alleged manuals?"
"Umm well on our website."
"public website?"
"yes. Well... Yes. But we have since removed them so he is infringing on our copyright by still having them!"
"so he defendant discovered that your software spies on users without their consent, knowledge, or ability to stop it and then found on your website manuals that explained how your spyware works. Now you want the judicial system to punish him for exposing your company's illicit monitoring of the public? Not going to happen."

Companies like Carrier-IQ are a plague to our privacy.
It's one thing to create and provide (at a price) software to carriers that steals private information, but to try and threaten/ruin a person for talking about it shows a real "Big Brother" mentality IMO.
I hope this is the beginning of a major change in how the rights of the consumer are protected when it comes to the collection of information. We have the right to be informed as to what is being collected from our most private devices and to opt out should we choose (which most of us will..)
Carrier-IQ is the equivalent to digital theft, no question about it. It's happening without disclosure, without permission, and it's purposely hidden from the average consumer who would have no way to discover this for themselves.
Look at how upset Carrier-IQ is over what was PUBLIC information being "collected" from their website? Imagine if we were stealing the private data from their site/personal devices and being paid for doing it!

Just freeze it or uninstall it with Titanium Backup.
It's the app "System Manager" ironically. Check the process in your running services (Settings > Applications > Running Services)
You'll see "System Manager" and when you click on it, it will show you something like "com.tmobile.carrierIQ" (I forget exactly since I froze the app about a week ago.)
It does not affect the phone in any negative way, it actually runs slightly better now IMO
Wow, it never ceases to amaze me the stealthy things like this that software companies come up with, and then are outraged when everyone finds out and wants it gone.

It would appear on my Telus variant (SGH-T989D) that there is no CIQ installed. Checked my running processes but also used the app TrevE made.

It's called System Manager (even more shady), it should be there because it's definitely on the stock rom unless you have a slightly modified stock rom with the bloat removed.

Its an app manager that lets you control what apps have access to. You can block apps from accessing the internet, viewing your personal info and take away any permissions you dont want it to have.
A big benefit to this also is battery life will go up as a result of blocking apps which always connect to the internet to upload your data or steam ads to you. A lot of freeware apps also have way too many permissions and this lets you effectively block them.
Its the first thing I install everytime I use a new rom

So I installed it and I'm just dumbfounded at all the stuff that some apps want access to....Why the f*** does Angry Birds: Space need to access my phone's GPS data?? There's an odd one!

If I recall, there's a developer option you can enable in CM7 that allows you to do just this. Just press the permission you want to block when installing the app or afterward. CM9 doesn't (to my knowledge) have this option yet, but I'm sure it will. Good day, iPhone users =).

Its scary how many apps want full control of your phone. Ive seen them wanting to read my contacts list and even control my messaging app. A lot of it has to do with data mining of their customers. All the info they collect from you is pretty valuable and the gps thing is pretty scary too. Theyre able to record your coordinates and report the info back to them. Not to mention its going to kill your battery too with them doing this.
Security apps I use
Droidwall - simple iptables for android
PDroid - like it better than Lbe, takes less resources but needs patch and waiting for ics support
Addons detector - shows which apps have "adware, spyware, etc."
Thanks William for mentioning PDroid. The app thread is here
PDroid gives message saying I needed to build somethingortheother first in order for it to work on my OG EPIC 4G .... LBE working great right outta the box though
Wow its come a long way I remember this when I first got rooted the guy mentioned using this... but its icon was red and the ui was bland they really uped it a notch =] completely forgot about this app thanks.. love it.

Not exactly sure, it was some networking WNIC related apps. He did not even change the APN from the default T-mobile one like most people do to break the cap, and further, I dont think he change the directory permissions that most people do to eliminate capping.
The only other way I was aware of the cap being broken prior to this was via changing the APN to that of an MVNOs.
All I ask in exchange for this information is, if you try this, please report your findings and or results to me regardless of whether or not you want to do so publicly on the forum.

TL;DR - He doesn't know because it can't be done. All data tracking is done on t-mobile's end.
Despite your encounter with that other persons phone it would be logical to think that their own towers should be able to track how much data is being extracted and to which assigned sim card and not getting the information from your phone which can be easily fondled with.
If it was easy as eliminating a few processes and tweaks, I'd say they better fire all those who implemented the data usage tracking system because they will be losing out on a massive revenue.

The three processes had to do with the Wireless NIC. All I can say is that once they were killed there was absolutely zero data usage reported. I have seen it done only on the Darkside rom. I have never seen it done on any other rom. It makes absolutely no sense to me why it works.
I agree with you guys that only an idiot would implement the data usage monitoring software on the Customer Provisioned Equipment, but I saw what I saw as crazy as it sounds.
My jaw literally dropped. I doubt it was fake unless I was somehow hoaxed, which would be very hard considering my background, but it is always a possibility.

I am sick of the laggy, crappy stock T-Mobile 4.1.2 ROM and would like to install something faster, smoother and better like Wicked ROM.
My employer mandates that no rooted phones can be used if they are used to access corporate network - and they are a global company that are experts in intrusion detection etc. so they can probably detect a phone that is not compliant.
Is there any way to remove root/ensure the boot loader is locked after installing a custom ROM to ensure compliance?
Thanks.

The bootloader on this phone is not locked.
You can unroot with SuperSU or a billion other apps from the store. But you will cripple Wicked if you unroot it. Maybe stock rooted (debloat it yourself, then unroot it) would be the appropriate choice for you.

1: without physically having the phone, there is no way for your IT department to know if you're rooted. If the carrier that provides voice and data service can't differentiate a rooted phone from a not rooted phone, I very much doubt that the it department of your company can.
2: using the rooted stock ROM, then debloating it (better known as removing the tmo crapware), then unrooting, is the best option. Most custom ROMs rely on root access for the customizations they make to the framework, system apps, etc. Stock ROMs do not.

I am one who believes the carrier and/or manufacturer are able to tell if you're rooted. Or they have the ability to anyway. Things such as sysscope make this possible. And if they can check your imei they can check more, if they want to. Lots of info gets sent back to google, sammy, T-Mobile, etc via check-ins and such.

This was my thinking, and the company that I work for is one of 5 on the planet that does what they do - they essentially provide the entire physical backbone that allows companies like Microsoft, IBM, major banks etc actually HAVE internet. I'm certain they know exactly what's going in the network and have an array of tools designed to ensure full security.
I think the stock ROM, debloated and then root removed is best. I don't mind twiz, would just like my phone to run smoother.
I heard the sgs3 will get 4.3 but lord only knows how long it will take T-Mobile to release it, if ever!
Thanks.
I work for tmobile & im not from store. And theres no tool other than a physical inspection in store to tell if the device is rooted.
Even the so cal updates comes directly from manufacture they just have the provider crap the provider request.
I can see who you call, and who call you & for how long. Not hear the call. Text same **** we have no acess to the content. As far as what in your phone thats for you to know and for carriers & your company to find out.
Theres a lot of myths...now theres a few selectec engineers that will have access to the cells & repeater or the switch and if they want to they can see info. But they are not suppose to its against federal laws.
