Greetings all,
My wife recently updated her phone to EL29.....and now has horrible battery life.
I have root access on her phone, but I am not really familiar with the S2 family of phone (I have an HTC Evo).
Is there any way to fix this? She wants stock with Wi Fi tethering (the only reason why I rooted the phone for her).
Is there some Kernel fix for this, or some way to roll back to EL26 (I think)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...
Most here think el29 has the best battery life. Give it a few days to settle and try charging via usb port. My battery always seems to last longer when charged off usb, its a slower charge time so maybe thats why.
Give her a good el29 rom and say its stock

Most likely it is some app running in the background. That is what causes most battery issues. Install something like better battery stats and see if something is always running.
I noticed that Android OS is at the top of battery usage, so I don't know if that has something to do with it or not. I've been searching around trying to find a fix for it, but all I can find is people complaining that the EL29 update gave them horrible battery life.
I wonder if I could back her apps up and roll back to el26?

Just find a stock\rooted el26 ROM...

Install Blazer ROM and say its the OTA ICS update...
I think there might be something stuck running in the background.
I would suggest a clean install/factory restore. In addition to that, I would double check every app to ensure that they are not syncing constantly. the better battery stats app on XDA would be very useful in this situation to identify any apps draining the battery. Ignore Android OS usage as it truly means nothing. sfhub has an Odin one click package to install stock rooted el26 if you wanted to roll back still but I wouldn't. I suggest giving blazer 4.1 a try.

Battery life?!? Sheesh! Its horrible. I haven rooted yet tho. I'm seeing all of these rc3 roms that seem promising but the phone functionality out of box seems to be working out for me right now w/exception of battery issue. I waiting for the most perfect roms to be perfect before I root. Plus a verizon employee told me that theyre rolling out the ota's. Im a new incredible owner and I wanna get to know this phone a lil bit before I feel like I wanna root. I could just possibly wait til 2.2 has root. But golly gee, the battery life is horrible! Worse than the eris I owned previously... But it did get better when I rooted that one.

I won't recommend anything but will say that I flashed kings #3 kernel and my battery life almost tripled.
Every user is different. Honestly I can go two days with one charge, and some. depends on the type of usage and how extreme. Personally I am rooted, and running the under volted stock hydra kernel, and it gave me an extra boost. I would suggest getting a higher mah battery

Make sure you check to see if your phone is sleeping when you push the power button or the screen turns off. By comparing awake time vs. sleep time, I figured out that one of my apps wasn't letting my Dinc sleep. Once I set that app to be auto-killed when my phone sleeps, my battery life increased big time.
And just how do I figure all that out? A far as which apps are sucking up battery. My phone seems to be asleep when I push the power button. Screen goes dark and nothing happens when I push any buttons except the power to make it come back on again.

I too am considering going to kings #3 kernel but would you happen to know where I can download the stock froyo kernel if I decide to roll back?
Thanks
You can get the stock kernel on hydras website. Google search for hydra kernels. I think its under support.

I found that but I am wondering what kernel version that stock kernel is as there were a few changes between leak and official.
I followed this post with SetCPU, and it dramatically changed my battery life for the better. I use kingxkernel #1 on SkyRaider 2.5.2 Sense.

Right now using caulkin 1.5a and stock kernel 1.1. No Los but battery drops so quickly it seems.
Caulkin 1.5a Bare Rom and Rogue Renegade kernel is giving me awesome battery life.
Stock kernel no Los and best bar life but rogue outlaw comes close.

This for me. Just make sure to calibrate.
Calkulin's and StarBurst are both nice ROMs, but StarBurst has been the most stable with best battery life for me.
Funny, this combination drained my battery quickly until I replaced Rogue with stock--now battery life is great. Rogue had worked fine before the most recent Calkulin update. If you have problems I think you need to try the available options or reflash.
Before switching to a different ROM or Kernel, I always go back to stock to make sure I have a clean starting point. This is so easy now this is available > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
I am not saying this will solve every issue but its worked well for me. There really is no reason why a certain config should work fine on one device but not another.

that is now incorporated into my flashing routine as well. Takes about an additional 15 minutes but well worth it in my eyes.

Yeah caulk use to be awesome. Now I'm getting bad battery drain. About 3% since turning my screen on navigating to this Page and replying back.
Going to flash stock tonight and reflash.
I can easily get a full day of heavy use when off charger with calk's rom. Which is nice to know. I might just pick up another battery to have just in case but coming from the Evo this phone is light years ahead with battery. I suggest flashing stock tar and pit file as part of your "wiping" routine.

Yeah I use to also but last two days its been relatively bad. Definitely flashing stock.
What about this one on battery life as well as signal extra...
EpicAOSPmodv2.5.1
I UV the cpu and GPU on stock EG31 kernel
after flashing starburst 1.9.5 battery life was great but then getting worse
I had great battery life after flashing starburst ROM 1.9.5 and calibrating, but after a couple of weeks battery life has become 50% worse. What could be the cause of something like this when my settings haven't been changed?
running lostKernelExp+
i installed badass battery monitor and it appears that the application "kernel" is responsible for 30% of my battery life. when battery monitor shows "kernel" is it referring to lostKernelExp+?
quick question
i know its recommended to flash a rom at 100% for the best battery, but is it just the same to flash it at lets say 30%, fully charge it, then just wipe the battery stats?
thanks guys

I agree,
Ive flashed with my battery from 30-50% on a number of occasions and still got great battery life.
it doesn't really matter what your battery is at when you flash something (as long as there's enough to get you through your first boot anyway). probably don't get a good indication on a new rom's battery until at least the 2nd or 3rd day. and wiping battery stats has been repeatly reported as a waste of time though. doesn't hurt anything but doesn't accomplish anything either.
Hello, this is my first post but I have read this site for many years. If this post goes in a different section please move it, Im sorry. So a little backround first. My phone is currently running 4.2.1 with the JellyBam Rom. I rooted my phone basically the very first day I got it and the battery has been terrible. I get about 12 hours if I am lucky and thats with only an hour or an hour and a half of screen time. I have done all the basic tricks with screen brightness and sync is off and still no improvement. I have been on numerous roms and it has always been bad. So I have been reading that the kernel can affect battery life but to be honest this whole kernel thing confuses me. All i know is that I can not be on a JB kernel because i am on 4.2.1.
This is what my phone says now:
Android Version : 4.2.1
Baseband: S710.10 S.FI27
Kernel Version [email protected]#7
JellyBam Version jellybam-4.2.1_d710_v5.3.0-STABLE_20130207
Build Number d710-userdebug 4.2.1 JOP40D
eng.ken.20130207.010412 test-
I also have CWM recovery if this means anything regarding kernels. and would like to stay with it if I can
So my question is if I want to try a different kenel which should i try? And do you think it would help with battery? And how do I change it, is there a good video showing the steps? Is it flashed like a ROM?
Please help THANK YOU!!!!
Welcome, without JB kernel source yet we have to use what our devs made to work. The simple answer is that the kernel you have is your only option at the moment.
I have never tried that rom but battery life on AOSP roms is less than normal. Its a trade off of having the latest and greatest.

Ok so flashing another GB or ICS kernel will not do anything really? Does my battery life sound about normal then for running 4.2.1? Like i said I get 12 hours if im lucky....with just moderate use im looking at 8-10 hours.

That's about normal for any phone with a removable battery... Buy another one and an external charger and take advantage of the fact that you have a removable battery, if you carry a fully charged backup you're good for the day no matter what, even with heavy use... I don't know why nobody else does this. I used to have three for my Shift. I wanna know what phone you guys are coming from that that is bad battery life, especially with a screen this big... I swear about a quarter of the posts on this forum are about battery life, it's kinda ridiculous.

Wont work with a GB or ICS kernel. Yeah that battery life sounds about right, price you pay for the latest and greatest. As mentioned grab an external charger and spare batteries. I keep a spare with me and just swap and go worry free. I got some EzoPower brand batteries on Amazon a few weeks ago and so far so good. Paid under $15 for 3 batteries and charger.
Several weeks ago I switched to GA10 and my battery life is great. That is another option if you have not tried it yet its not bad.

Ok so i guess for right now if I stick with JellyBam Rom I can not use it. It states specifically not to use a JB kernel. Does anyone know if using a battery from the original galaxy in the S2 is ok? it does fit.
PS. I have been messing around with underclocking and voltage and I have seen some great improvements in battery. I clocked the CPU down to MAX 800 and MIN 200 for during the day and from 3am-8am I brought it down even more to MAX 500 MIN 200 and as of right now i have 41% battery left and i have 13 hours and 44 minutes with a screen time of 1 hour.
Can underclocking it that much hurt the CPU/phone?
Part of your problem is the build your on, 4.2.1 is an unofficial build, so you're dealing with a buggy system, if your battery is old and worn your going to have all kinds of issues.
The original S battery has less miliamps than the epic touch battery, 1600 mha vs 1800 mha, it's like using a partially charged battery. You need a new battery.
Under clocking and voltage is the wrong way to go, if you need to run at those numbers you may as well just get a flip phone because that's how retarded your epic will be trying to run it this way.
I suggest a new battery and some stock/rooted Jb. I'm on stock/rooted Ga10, no mods no tweaks and regularly get 16 to 20+ hrs in between chargings . And everything works.

Make sure you backup your sd card internal and external storage before flashing.
Someguyatx has the link you need its simple to use, make copies of your internal/external sd's on you're pc and use the "rooted restore" option. Do not use "keep your data" option, you could have a problem migrate to the new Rom by keeping your data. Its better if you start fresh from scratch.

Well while the ball is rolling midas well ask. Basically back up anything you don't want to lose. Have Samsung drivers installed.. Download the stock rooted 1 click he posted. Open one click. Put phone in download mode/odin mode, get com port and hit start. It puts phone in new state which is good. The other way is to download sextapes stock tar and odin 1.85 or 3.04. Flash stock by the same way but checking PDA and finding the file.
Ga10 is 4.1.2. It is a Samsung built rom. So it is 110% built for this device. I know many steer away from stock roms. I used to be that way, but ga10 is slick!. Its fast, smooth, no lag, gps reliable, data speeds (for me) kick ass. Battery life is bad a** too. I put in fresh battery in before bed last night and when I picked up phone 8 hours later it still said 100% Flash it and you will be a happy camper I guarantee it. The screenshot i have below is after hours of Tiger woods 2012, web browsing. gps ect. HEAVY use. Still has 34% I still be using this charge well into tomorrow. (extended battery). Still stock battery gets 3+ hours screen time-extended gets me 7+. Good rom. Thanks sxtp

You guys are the best...kicking myself for taking this long to get involved on this site. you guys/gals are very helpful....i understand your directions the pasrt that was confusing me was this:
Mac/Linux - Install 7-zip, then use it to unpack the individual ODIN components in Reference Section B (below). If Heimdall fails flashing all 3 files together, try doing them individually. Skip the remaining instructions that are windows specific (steps 3, 4, 6).
Android - Install ZArchiver, then use it to unpack the ODIN OneClick 7zip self-extractor file in this section (long press *-oc-sfx.exe, Open as archive, Odin-OC, select *-OneClick.exe, Extract). Use Mobile ODIN to Open File the resulting *-OneClick.exe file. Mobile ODIN issue - modem might not flash consistently. Skip the remaining instructions that are windows ODIN specific (steps 3, 4, 5, 6).
But i guess if i am using Windows and the One Click this does not pertain to me. Am i correct?
PS The only thing i think i will miss from 4.2.1 is the lockscreen widgets, i kinda liked how you could have a widget per page. And if i go to GA10 and say I want to go back to a custom ROM do i just flash it as normal? Will I still have CWM recovery?
One click on the pc is as simple as it gets. Linux, Mac, hiemdall none of this applies to you right now.
To go to a custom Rom you can follow a guide in development, there are several, for now it involves going back to Gb with a safe recovery.
Once you run this your not going to miss the custom roms with all the bugs they have. On this lock screen you can have up to 4 short cuts, just like having widgets without bugs.
Enjoy.

So I haven't had the GS3 since a week before the Note 2 came out, and my wife still has the GS3. She's lately been complaining of really bad battery life. Having to charge 2-3 times a day to make it home! So I've flashed CWM and rooted the stock Rom, but I'm looking for the best Rom/Kernel combo to alleviate her problem. She really wants to keep the stock TW look and feel. Just hoping to get a few GS3 users opinions! Even if it mean stock rom but a certain battery efficient kernel. Thanks in advance!
To be honest I've found the best battery life just from the completely stock TW rom and it's kernel. I say if you have battery issues now, try solving them before you go flashing rom after rom trying to fix the problem. Could be an app causing battery drain that just needs to be reinstalled or maybe completely uninstalled. Maybe you should try Juice Defender since you are tired now.
That being said, I just flashed Cyanogenmod 10.1 RC2 a few days ago with the ktoonsez 5/29 kernel and I got very good battery life. Very close to stock, maybe better (haven't spent enough time with it to decide). Last night I flashed RC3 with ktoonsez kernel and everything seems good so far as well.

I appreciate the response. I've been following her phone usage the last few days, in hopes of finding an app to blame (or her candy crush addiction), but everyday the top battery consumption have been Kernel and Android System. I use GSam Battery Monitor Pro on both our phones. I suppose just rooting the stock rom and bebloating may be an option. I've just always had good luck with battery life in finding a decent stock based TW rom and mild Kernel. CM isn't gonna work for here. She's a creature of habit and is comfortable in TW. I've seen the Ktoonsez kernel but only listed for 4.1.2 TW, does he have a version for 4.1.1? Thanks again for the reply!
Yea don't think there's a kernel version for 4.1.1. Have you thought about an extended battery? Not gonna lie, it is pretty big so it's not for everyone. But I got used to it very fast, and actually strongly prefer the size now because before I always lost grip of my phone and dropped it from how thin it was. If she manages to burn through a 4200 mah battery in a day, give her an award!

Download wake lock detector, let it install, reboot the phone and let her use it for a while, this will tell you what's been running on the phone. The other thing you can do to stretch out your battery is turn stuff off (disable) in settings>> applications
Safe stuff I have disabled so far... Also switch from Gamil app to stock email app since gmail seems to wake the device alot.

Whenever I need a very good performing TW ROM I go back to my nandroid of Blandroid 2.7 (4.1.1) and KT747 Mar 6. I'm not sure why but I get outstanding battery life with this combo. Yesterday I had 15 hours worth of usage with 10% left and over 4 hours of screen time. Kernel settings are 384/1512/ondemand/noop.
As mentioned already, there are some apps that really drain the battery. Especially intensive games.
I have a similiar situation on my wifes rooted HTC Vivid. She does not like it when I change/erase everything. Its been so long now, I dont know if there is a process to root without wiping everything, but if you do root, Debloat obviously, but this greenify app is working for me. Simple and so far decent. I am really liking Faux kernel, with his recommended settings on Intilledemand, lately(Chubz ROM), but the best battery i ever had was on DrewGaren's M7 Rom. Like 2% loss overnight on standby.
I've stuck with the last version of ICS, frozen the stuff I don't use with Titanium Backup, and I get pretty good battery life. ICS battery life is better than JB in my experience and I don't see that much of a difference between the two that makes me want to go to JB.
