Please help with Battery/Kernel - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello, this is my first post but I have read this site for many years. If this post goes in a different section please move it, Im sorry. So a little backround first. My phone is currently running 4.2.1 with the JellyBam Rom. I rooted my phone basically the very first day I got it and the battery has been terrible. I get about 12 hours if I am lucky and thats with only an hour or an hour and a half of screen time. I have done all the basic tricks with screen brightness and sync is off and still no improvement. I have been on numerous roms and it has always been bad. So I have been reading that the kernel can affect battery life but to be honest this whole kernel thing confuses me. All i know is that I can not be on a JB kernel because i am on 4.2.1.
This is what my phone says now:
Android Version : 4.2.1
Baseband: S710.10 S.FI27
Kernel Version [email protected]#7
JellyBam Version jellybam-4.2.1_d710_v5.3.0-STABLE_20130207
Build Number d710-userdebug 4.2.1 JOP40D
eng.ken.20130207.010412 test-
I also have CWM recovery if this means anything regarding kernels. and would like to stay with it if I can
So my question is if I want to try a different kenel which should i try? And do you think it would help with battery? And how do I change it, is there a good video showing the steps? Is it flashed like a ROM?
Please help THANK YOU!!!!

Welcome, without JB kernel source yet we have to use what our devs made to work. The simple answer is that the kernel you have is your only option at the moment.
I have never tried that rom but battery life on AOSP roms is less than normal. Its a trade off of having the latest and greatest.

Ok so flashing another GB or ICS kernel will not do anything really? Does my battery life sound about normal then for running 4.2.1? Like i said I get 12 hours if im lucky....with just moderate use im looking at 8-10 hours.

That's about normal for any phone with a removable battery... Buy another one and an external charger and take advantage of the fact that you have a removable battery, if you carry a fully charged backup you're good for the day no matter what, even with heavy use... I don't know why nobody else does this. I used to have three for my Shift. I wanna know what phone you guys are coming from that that is bad battery life, especially with a screen this big... I swear about a quarter of the posts on this forum are about battery life, it's kinda ridiculous.

Wont work with a GB or ICS kernel. Yeah that battery life sounds about right, price you pay for the latest and greatest. As mentioned grab an external charger and spare batteries. I keep a spare with me and just swap and go worry free. I got some EzoPower brand batteries on Amazon a few weeks ago and so far so good. Paid under $15 for 3 batteries and charger.
Several weeks ago I switched to GA10 and my battery life is great. That is another option if you have not tried it yet its not bad.

Thanks for the reply....I have 2 questions...first i have a battery for the origanl galaxy S and it fits the S2 do you think it would be an issue using it in the S2? And what is GA10 is that a jelly bean kernel? Where do i get it? My rom istrustions state I can not use a jelly bean kernel thats why i ask.

Ok so i guess for right now if I stick with JellyBam Rom I can not use it. It states specifically not to use a JB kernel. Does anyone know if using a battery from the original galaxy in the S2 is ok? it does fit.
PS. I have been messing around with underclocking and voltage and I have seen some great improvements in battery. I clocked the CPU down to MAX 800 and MIN 200 for during the day and from 3am-8am I brought it down even more to MAX 500 MIN 200 and as of right now i have 41% battery left and i have 13 hours and 44 minutes with a screen time of 1 hour.
Can underclocking it that much hurt the CPU/phone?

Part of your problem is the build your on, 4.2.1 is an unofficial build, so you're dealing with a buggy system, if your battery is old and worn your going to have all kinds of issues.
The original S battery has less miliamps than the epic touch battery, 1600 mha vs 1800 mha, it's like using a partially charged battery. You need a new battery.
Under clocking and voltage is the wrong way to go, if you need to run at those numbers you may as well just get a flip phone because that's how retarded your epic will be trying to run it this way.
I suggest a new battery and some stock/rooted Jb. I'm on stock/rooted Ga10, no mods no tweaks and regularly get 16 to 20+ hrs in between chargings . And everything works.

I have to say running my epic at max 800 CPU I see no real noticeable difference in performance. almost none at all.
Can you please tell me how I would go about getting on stock rooted JB with GA10. Is there a post I can read or can u explain? and remember I am a noob.

The one click GA10 thread is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36801656
Make sure you backup your sd card internal and external storage before flashing.

Someguyatx has the link you need its simple to use, make copies of your internal/external sd's on you're pc and use the "rooted restore" option. Do not use "keep your data" option, you could have a problem migrate to the new Rom by keeping your data. Its better if you start fresh from scratch.

Well while the ball is rolling midas well ask. Basically back up anything you don't want to lose. Have Samsung drivers installed.. Download the stock rooted 1 click he posted. Open one click. Put phone in download mode/odin mode, get com port and hit start. It puts phone in new state which is good. The other way is to download sextapes stock tar and odin 1.85 or 3.04. Flash stock by the same way but checking PDA and finding the file.
Ga10 is 4.1.2. It is a Samsung built rom. So it is 110% built for this device. I know many steer away from stock roms. I used to be that way, but ga10 is slick!. Its fast, smooth, no lag, gps reliable, data speeds (for me) kick ass. Battery life is bad a** too. I put in fresh battery in before bed last night and when I picked up phone 8 hours later it still said 100% Flash it and you will be a happy camper I guarantee it. The screenshot i have below is after hours of Tiger woods 2012, web browsing. gps ect. HEAVY use. Still has 34% I still be using this charge well into tomorrow. (extended battery). Still stock battery gets 3+ hours screen time-extended gets me 7+. Good rom. Thanks sxtp

You guys are the best...kicking myself for taking this long to get involved on this site. you guys/gals are very helpful....i understand your directions the pasrt that was confusing me was this:
Mac/Linux - Install 7-zip, then use it to unpack the individual ODIN components in Reference Section B (below). If Heimdall fails flashing all 3 files together, try doing them individually. Skip the remaining instructions that are windows specific (steps 3, 4, 6).
Android - Install ZArchiver, then use it to unpack the ODIN OneClick 7zip self-extractor file in this section (long press *-oc-sfx.exe, Open as archive, Odin-OC, select *-OneClick.exe, Extract). Use Mobile ODIN to Open File the resulting *-OneClick.exe file. Mobile ODIN issue - modem might not flash consistently. Skip the remaining instructions that are windows ODIN specific (steps 3, 4, 5, 6).
But i guess if i am using Windows and the One Click this does not pertain to me. Am i correct?
PS The only thing i think i will miss from 4.2.1 is the lockscreen widgets, i kinda liked how you could have a widget per page. And if i go to GA10 and say I want to go back to a custom ROM do i just flash it as normal? Will I still have CWM recovery?

One click on the pc is as simple as it gets. Linux, Mac, hiemdall none of this applies to you right now.
To go to a custom Rom you can follow a guide in development, there are several, for now it involves going back to Gb with a safe recovery.
Once you run this your not going to miss the custom roms with all the bugs they have. On this lock screen you can have up to 4 short cuts, just like having widgets without bugs.
Enjoy.

[Q] Custom ROM vs Stock ROM - is it really that much faster?

I bought my GSII used, already rooted, with a custom ROM already loaded on it.
I have to ask - since I never used one with a 100% pure stock ROM - is it really THAT MUCH faster with a custom?
I am currently running Juggs 5.0 - but if I went back to 100% stock would I feel that much difference?

It's not really about speed. But with a custom ROM you definitely have more customizations possible. You can change the look of the interface, the notification toggles, colors etc. I have the i9100, which is another variant of the SGS2 and I've had ICS for a couple of months now, but it's not getting officially released until this month some time. So, it's not really about speed but rather about the freedom to do other things with it. Some people might cite benchmark tests, and scream that I'm wrong, but the hardware is what makes your phone fast...the software's not at all going to choke that out (whether stock or custom). As far as speed goes, you're probably not going to notice the difference.
Also, though you've got root access which enables you to install apps and do things you just can't do otherwise.
All that said, there are certain advantages to stock. It's often times more stable than something custom. There are ups and downs. If you feel the need to experiment, you can always flash back. Just read a lot before you get your feet wet (it is very possible to brick your device if you muck it up) and you'll be fine.
I don't think so. I'm going to get flamed plenty I'm sure but I don't see much improvement over how my phone performed out of the box. I think the battery life may even have been better before I started flashing stuff.
I should have stated in my original post - I am definitely not a n00b to Android or to flashing/rooting. I can understand the customization aspect, but honestly other than flashing, I have never had a real use for Root access.
I can flash something with a new custom interface or colors and always end up coming back to something that has the stock look about it... In this case, I've tried almost every available custom ROM and keep coming back to Juggs .
I ask about speed though because all the ROM cooks seem to try to use that as a selling point... "FAST!" "Butter smooth!" blah blah blah ...

After I posted, I looked at your tag, and assumed as much with 700+ posts, you've been around the XDA block.
Really? No need for root?! I'm a flashing junkie (well, okay, that's exaggerated. it comes and goes in spurts) TitaniumBackup is my friend. Also CWM is a gift.
Agreed, stock ICS is love. But I do also like certain tweaks, i.e. the %-battery indicator (and while we're on the subject, I've got a little Android logo with a % indicator for my battery...I wonder why Android devs don't include little things like that).
Yeah, your best bet is to try some out. But IMHO devs talk too much in that regard. I'll probably get flamed if any read this, but devs are kinda like used car salesmen in that regard. They've got a product that they want you to use, so they try to sell it. Can't say I blame 'em, really. But again IMO, most of it's hype.
I didn't think you were new to Android since your account is almost 4 years old so I'd assumed you were familiar with all the "benefits" of rooting. The phone is so nice out of the box I don't think any of the roms are any smoother or better on battery. I think Warfare is probably the best on battery and for me CM7 was easliy the worst. I didn't notice a change in data speed, 2d smoothness, 3d smoothness, battery cover smoothness... Nothing. The device is so nice out of the box and I don't use it for anything other than a phone, text messaging, web browsing, e-mail, Skype, the occasional slicing of fruit or a word or two with friends so I can't comment on all the added functionality all the "super-duper heavy users" of this device probably use on custom roms. The only reason mine is rooted is for an ad host file and the occasional tether.

When I had a Fascinate... I was a huge fan of overclocking and undervolting. The same when I had a Thunderbolt. It made everything smoother and the Thunderbolt especially needed help in the battery area. This device just works. No need for anything other than what it came with for me. Obviously that didn't stop me from flashing the development section... But hey, I have a problem.
Warfare is very good.but,no advantage so far.
For me,im back on stock.just works better for me (doesnt mean I wont have a flash attack).

the thing with our device is that it came sooo sick straight out of the box that you don't really need to improve it that much. However, custom ROMs/kernels generally make the ROMs smoother, but not many people notice the difference.
I actually notice that because of the kernels implemented with certain ROMs, our phone is able to RUN just as smooth at a lower clockspeed which saves us battery. Other than that, I don't think Custom ROMs are actually "SMOOTHER" or faster than the stock ROM because Samsung really did well on this phone.

The main difference is the bloatware which really does make an impact on speed, memory consumption and overall smoothness.
Some rom cook faster, you should choose the rom cook by team have many vote on forum.

I was just going to start a similar thread actually. I have watched videos of the different ROM's that we can install on the T989 variant to get an idea of what's available and what I like. Currently SlickMOD ROM looks the smoothest with the best battery life.
Having said that, in the video that I saw, when quadrant was run on SlickMOD, while it was overclocked, the score was approx 2690. When I ran Quadrant on my Stock ROM (rooted Stock ROM without being overclocked either) I got a score of 3199. Also, after 16 hours of use I still usually have more than 50% battery life.
Other than the options for different themes and customizations and ROM control, are custom ROMs going to provide better performance and battery life than what I am already receiving with my Stock? I mean I really want to give the other ROM's a try, but the reason would be for speed and battery life and right now both are pretty good for me on Stock. Thoughts/Suggestions?

Generally speaking (I don't own this device) stock ROMs will normally get better battery life. Custom ROMs can approach stock, in this regard, but I'd be way beyond surprised if a cook made a ROM that had better battery life than Google's team of Android developers.
Problem with SlickMOD is that the dev's T989 broke and he isn't getting another one - so - development has HALTED.

It's the Stock ROM that came with my phone. I rooted the phone but haven't flashed any custom kernel's or custom ROMs on my phone. I also use Zeam Launcher as opposed to the TW Launcher by default. I have turned off animations, limited my homescreens to 3. I don't use too many widgets and I use an all black background. Also running Juice Defender to help with battery but I don't think that affects performance/speed.
Model Number = SGH-T898D
Android Version = 2.3.5
Baseband Version = T989DTLKJ3
Kernel Version = 2.6.35.11
Build Number = GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
I don't know if that helps or answers your question. Hope that helps.
I'm willing to bet that the performance gains that are being seen on the Stock ROMs is due to the fact that they are ODEXed. By DeODEXing the ROMs can be customized to the cook's heart's content, but there is a mild performance hit taken.
Thoughts?

My thoughts on GB ICS and JB on the Epic 4G Touch.

I'll just be giving everyone a little history on my experiences with the Epic 4G Touch and it's OS iterations since release.
Purchased brand-new on 10/1/11. It came with 2.3.6. When mid 2012 came I heard about 4.0 ICS coming around, so I kept checking every 5 minutes for the new update implementation. Read that it's been delayed... not confirmed; Sprint said that they've no idea... blah blah blah, that sort of nut-shell...
So, when it FINALLY got to my phone, I was excited only to figure out these 3 issues.
1. It wasn't ANYWHERE as smooth, responsive, or as fluid as 2.3.6.
2. Had much... much worse battery life (FL27 barely fixed that....)
3. Had the infamous "Sprint ID has stopped responding" issue (FL24 fixed that?) - it went away when I got FL24.
So, within the last week or so, I got sick of waiting for 4.1.2 OTA from Sprint and or Samsung, so I decided to do what we all here do. We take matters into our own hands; so I did, and threw the GA10 Build 4.1.2 with Nature UX onto my Epic 4G Touch.
Now, I love it. It's smooth, and is as good as any UI overlayed Android flavor.
I would keep it...if me, I, personally didn't get horrid battery life from it. (4G off, auto-sync off, most "useless apps and programs running in the background were disabled. I had GPS off, and 50% or so screen brightness.
Guess what mmy battery drain rate was? 30% an hour.... using the phone for mid-use texting would bring battery life from 99% to 20% in about 50 minutes.
As you guessed, I had to do something about that...
Oh what about custom ROMS you might ask? Man you guys here at XDA are on the ball today. Thanks for asking.
I used AOSP Alpha 6 4.1.1 and TBH I loved it. That from what I've experienced on my handset was an OTA worthy build. No known bugs or issues to me... but it still had bad battery life (20-40% an hour drain..)
And I tried AOKP 4.1.1, which was HORRID overall in my experiance. Slow, and bad battery life.
So, if it's OK here... I've come to the conclusion that Android 2.3.6, overall, is the BEST ANDROID version to date.
It offers the best combination of speed/smoothness, and battery life.
I have a Nexus 7 with Android 4.2.1, and my stock Epic 4G Touch running 2.3.6, is JUST AS FAST, and JUST as responsive..
Tl;DR: I think GB is better then JB or ICS generally speaking, and I'm curiorus on what the XDA input is on all this..
Strange, my battery life on GA10 stock rooted is similar to GB. I get 18-24 hours with 2-3 hours of screen time most days. My batteries are both new 1800mah. I occasionally use gps nav, regularly use bluetooth and have email sync every 30 minutes. No facebook or twitter type apps.
The touchwiz experience is definitely better in JB as well. I was on AOSP roms for 6 months before this and never thought I would go back.
My thoughts ill sum it up quickly. Gb was is great. Fast and works. Ics is a joke and very glitchy. Stock jelly bean ga10 now were talking its flat out amazing. The new google search and refinement is top notch. I recieved new phone under warranty. Ga10 is so good I flashed it as soon as I pulled phone out of box. I just pulled 7 hour screen on time- 3.5 hours of tiger woods 2012 with cheapo extended battery.
Now on batteries. If there old and getting crappy life like you well replace it. I have multiple batteries and wall dock charger. That being said my phone never is plugged in to charge. Most people smart phone habbits is plug phone in all the time. Trying to cram a few %. That kills a battery. Destroys them! If you can fully charge on dock and fully discharge in phone then dock charge your dead batttery. They last much longer and keeps android battery meter happy. I have 2 stock samsung batteries that came with the phone. 1 is 14 months old and the other is 1 week old that came with replacement. The old one dies very fast while new one last all day. Well good for you!
Hope you got your flame suit on.
I guess all the devs contributors and regulars here must be idiots or something. You know, trying to continually improve the OS, applications and experience. What's that all about? We should probably just take what we were given and be happy. I mean my old 66 VW bug was great, why would I want or need my new car?
After reading the 2 posts you've put up recently I think your problem is lack of understanding what you're doing. You should probably do alot more reading before you brick your phone, then the best Android version will be "none" cuz your phone's gonna be dead.
I like to break stuff!
Yeah, you didn't even try 4.2.1... Which is 10x better than GB. Touchwiz ICS I agree is atrocious.. but you only tried a couple AOSP JB ROMs and are condemning it as worse than GB. Now that is a joke!
And I am sure you didn't try to apply any kind of battery tweaks or even try ds battery saver. Idk for me GB was lacking in so many departments. But to each his own

I'm a noob when it comes to ROOTING and all things involving modification of them, true.
But, I know enough to come to the conclusion that Gingerbread has worked the best for me.
Perhaps I should have stated that the OP was subject to personal preference and bias.
I'm not trying to pass off anything I've said as absolute fact. Im just expressing my own two cents, so take what I say with a huge truck load of salt.
The OP says what I did, and what I experienced. Nothing more.

I never said 4.2.1 is worse then GB. I said that GB has proven to be faster, and more responsive then 4.2.1.
I have a Nexus 7 running 4.2.1.
With my stock phone, and stock tablet, GB runs just as smooth really. But I'd give the advantage to GB.
You are correct that I never tried any battery tweaks. I may have to when I learn how to.
But a stock GA10 ROM getting the lack of battery life I had?
If other people are reporting better battery life then even GB (Or even equal)
This means either I just did something wrong, or maybe it's not working for me.
I can accept either way.
Just saying how it all is... for me.

See, your results are something I wish I had. I also use factory 1800Mah batterys. I have 4 total. 3 purchased on Amazon for just shy of $10.00, and one factory original.
What are you doing right? Or, what am I doing wrong? XD
OP, I know what you're trying to say and understand how you reached your personal conclusion and insight about the state of custom and official roms available for our phone. With that said, I think you should give the stock rooted FL16 rom an install and try it out. For me personally, it's the best Jellybean I've tried so far.
I tried in the past Gingerbread (EL29 OEM, Calkulin v3.0), ICS (OEM and Blue Kuban), and Jellybean (FK23, FL16, and GA10). And among those, I've had the smoothest experiences with OEM EL29, Calkulin v3.0, FL16, and GA10. GA10, however, had the call waiting bug and faster battery drain than FL16. So I went back to FL16. The battery life of FL16, though good, wasn't as good as Calkulin v3.0. So I bought myself a Gorilla Gadget 3500mah extended life battery and everything is perfect now.
I hope you can derive more fun and usage pleasure out of our phone in the feature.
I'll chime in. The feature set in Jelly vs. Ginger is no contest. Even if Jelly had a bit of lag and slightly less battery life (which I have none in GA10) I'd still use it over Ginger hands down. It's 10X more powerful. It's like comparing an xbox to an xbox 360.
A side note on battery life. Sure it was longer with ginger, that was when my battery was new. A year later, no rom is going to have equal battery life. Buy a new battery and then see how many hours you get off Jelly.

I really jusy use my phone like normal with some minor adjustments for better battery life. I removed a few stock apps but nothing really significant mostly sprint and samsung bloatware. I don't use connection optimizer, removed it, but I am very good about manually toggling gps, bluetooth and wifi when not in use and backing out of apps. Default brightness with auto setting 1 minute off and I use notification light with blink app, fast blue for sms so I can see it quickly.
Email is set to sync schedule to check every 30 mins on weekdays with nights and weekends every 4 hours. Only email, gmail, calendar, contacts, and internet sync. Weather widget is updated every hour. Location services use wireless networks but not gps or google and google now is off.
I get a pretty 3g good signal most of the time. No 4g here in KY so its always off. I use wifi at home but not at work and at least an hour of my screen time is over 3g daily. I also use an external charger and run my batteries down to about 10% then power off and pop in a new one. Hope that helps you or somebody else.
Just get yourself a new phone with a bigger battery that will solve your problem thats what I did. For me I felt like GB was the best for the e4gt and well iCS was a joke snd well JB is great snd all but waiting for an update and for source just to make roms much better and kernels to get better battery is just taking too long. I solved my problem by getting a note 2 that runs JB real good and battery life is lovely especially when you dont have to carry extra batteries or a charger which is silly to me but thats just my 2 cents and plus im just a phone whore cuz im pretty sure when tge s4 or note 3 comes out ima just sell the note 2 and buy the latest best thing lol but that's just me.

My experience was opposite interestingly enough. When I first got my phone I took it back to the sprint store twice because the UI was so laggy I couldn't take it.
Decided to root and ROM. Flashed ICS and all lag was gone. JB is even better.
Gingerbread was horrendous for me.

gb was ok. no lag or anything but I had flashed to page plus on stock el29 gb and was so afraid of upping to ics for fear of losing flash, I learned how to flash phones myself for the most part, which I didn't need personally because u never lose flash for it is stored in nvram and anyway best ics rom is either shadow God's universe, or sniper's lightweight, or the infamous blu kuban. best jb rom = shadow god's jellyverse for tw based, sniper's black beans rom for 4.2.
my personal favorite rom that I always come back to = PACman!
anyways, I didn't really experience much lag or anything from gb, ics, or jb

I understand this is personal preference and bias, but you have to understand that these are still leaks. They have imperfections.
As far as battery life on gb vs jb, without tweaks, think of it like this.
You have a lawnmower engine (your battery) that runs great on your lawnmower (gb), then you decide to put that engine into a truck (jb) and you can't figure out why it doesn't work the same. Obviously the truck is much bigger, has more features, requires more resources right?
Its apples and oranges here man, a little research through existing threads will take you a long long way:beer:

new galaxy 3 user, what should i do first?

so i had a s1 vibrant 2 years ago. got ascreen protector, a case, rooted, rommed, kerneled, changed some settings, etc.
i havent been in the scene for a while now, and i am wondering what a new galaxy s3 user should do? same things?
1. does this need a screen protector
2. is a phone case a good idea?
3. WTF IS UP WITH THIS BATTERY? charged, then unplugged, went to bed and overnight 7 hrs dropped to 40%. i literally did nothing. gps was off too. ???

Hey Man,
Welcome to the GS3! =)
1. Yes you should get a screen protector. I have never dropped my phone and I can already see micro scratches after 6 months. Others have reported the same.
2. I would say a case is a good idea. Because the phone is made of plastic and the bezel does not completely cover the screen, if you drop it and it hits on a corner, there's a good chance of a crack.
3. Google Now. If you have opted in, opt out or your phone won't make it through the day. It is the biggest resource hog out there. My phone easily lasts 14 hours with 3.5 hours screen time. I had 1.5 hours screen time yesterday and was up to 20 hours.
4. It is preferential. If you like the features Touchwiz offers, stock isn't bad. I do recommend you obtain a debloated custom ROM or do it yourself though. The phone runs 100% smoother on a debloated ROM.
5. Again its all preferential. AOSP: CyanogenMod 10.1, AOKP, Task650's rendition of AOKP, Vanilla Root box just to name a few... TW: Graviton, CSROM, Synergy, GalaxyMod, etc..
6. Lots of preferential questions lol, a few popular ones are Task650's Underwear Kernel for AOSP ROMs and KT747 for both Stock and AOSP. Those are the only ones I've tried. Good things happening with both.
7. Titanium Backup is about the only must have. I prefer GooManager just to keep my Recovery up to date. Some people prefer ClockworkMod, however TWRP has seemed to make an uprising in the past short while. GooManager updates your recovery to TWRP (which allows you to do anything CWM would let you do).
8. I would start with rooting your phone. Once rooted download GooManager from the Play Store and press menu to "Install OpenRecoveryScript" This will give you TWRP Custom Recovery. From there find your favorite debloated ROM, make a full nandroid backup from within TWRP and start flashing. This is generally how I begin with new phones, but again its very preferential and 9 times out of 10 someone will have a different method.
Just make sure you read all instructions while rooting and flashing. Then read them again, then follow them. Never flash any ROM that does not specifically say it was designed for your devices model (GS3 has several US variants, Canadian variants and International variants).
Lastly, make sure you backup your EFS folder / NV Data before flashing so that in the event you lose your IMEI you have a backup ready and waiting. =)

I agree with all of this, but I would allso suggest before any of the rooting or flashing To just use and enjoy the phone first find the things you do and dont like about it being on the stock ROM. Once you have Those ideas and you want to flash. start Reading some of the roms available to you and see what is going to make for the best experience for your use.

2. try stock TouchWiz
3. make decisions (whether you happy or unhappy with samsung touchwiz)
4. if you're happy, dont wanna change, keep it.
5. if you're happy but hate bloatwares, root and uninstall/change
6. if you're unhappy with touchwiz launcher, download new launcher
7. if you're unhappy with stock rom, root and try custom roms.
8. if download custom roms, read first (many newbies flash international rom and hard bricked their phones then came to us crying for help)
9. if you wanna add mods to custom roms/stock roms, make sure you read carefully before installing (mods such as audio...)
10. hate the look? theme it.
11. hate font? change it
12. bored? download games
13. need buddies? download social network apps
14. battery drain? search for solution
15. bored/hate/dissastified of S3? get new phone

1. does this need a screen protector
I don't have one on my phone and am approaching one year of ownership. I have a few very tiny micro scratches on it, but that is because I occasionally put my work keys in the same pocket like I shouldn't, but when the screen is on, you don't see them at all. I usually only see them in sunlight at an angle. I personally hate looking at a beautiful screen though a crappy screen protector.
2. is a phone case a good idea?
I have several cases, all TPU cases and they fit very well. I love how thin my phone is so I find myself taking the case off from time to time. If you are a woman and are going to put it in your purse, get a case. If I go anywhere other than home and work, that is usually when I put my case back on.
3. WTF IS UP WITH THIS BATTERY? charged, then unplugged, went to bed and overnight 7 hrs dropped to 40%. i literally did nothing. gps was off too. ???
When I was on the stock firmware, my battery sucked. I rooted/rom'd my phone and ever since, the battery is stellar. I can go an entire day and have 30% when I go to bed, which is where I plug it in. I play games, use it during the day for whatever too. My work e-mail is on it so I get e-mails all day, I stream music in the car and I do have Google Now enabled and have no issues. GPS is also enabled.
4. is stock any good?
I tried to use stock for about a month and though I got used to it, I am a techy and a tinkerer and know the benefits of AOSP roms and AOSP Android. This however is a personal choice. If you know how to do it or can at the very least follow instructions, its a piece of cake. I recommend AOKP ( aokp.co ) or CM10. They tend to have the least issues and frequent updates to make it better all the time. I never had any interest in the extra 'features' Samsung put in the stock firmware so I didn't miss any of them when I went AOSP.
5. what are the top roms right now?
As said before, AOKP and CM10
6. is there a top "kernel"
I tend to use the kernel that came with AOKP. I have AOKP on my Nexus 7 too, but use the Franco Kernel. I haven't tried Franco on my S3 only because its fast as hell. I put Franco on my N7 because there was a noticible speed bump with it.
7. any must have apps like the s1 had? like titanium, etc
I finally bought Titanium when I got the S3 and am glad I did. The auto backup.restore is great. Wifi File Explorer Pro is great to have too if you don't have a cable handy to transfer files to and from your phone but do have a wifi connection handy. I got mine off Amazon's app store but I bet its on the Android Play Store too.
8. any other comments? thanks!
Have fun with the phone. Tinker and try new things to see what suits you best. Its very hard to truly brick your phone (if possible at all since Odin is awesome) so you can always get it back to stock and try again.

The Lean Kernel is a great kernel to use and works with AOKP and AOSP ROMs.
Been using it for 4 months and been getting substantial battery life.
Its a practically fool proof phone. Buy root explorer ( a must) and titanium backup and don't flash anything you don't find on the at&t forum and you will be fine. Its easy to try out certain fixes and play around a lot.

[Q] I'm at my wits end with my phone's battery life

I've had my Galaxy Note II for just over a year and a half. I have loved every minute of it. It's my favorite phone that I've ever had by far.
A few months ago I go an OTA update from T-Mobile to Android 4.3. Since then, my battery life has been so horrible. My phone doesn't last more than 5 hours. I have tried every solution online that I can find. Even running in airplane mode only extends my battery life for a few extra hours. I unplugged my phone at 100% this morning at about 7am. It's only nearing 11am and my phone is down to almost 50%. I only turn on WiFi when I'm using it, I have GPS turned off. I turned off Google Now and I'm running Greenify. This all has managed to add, maybe an hour tops to my battery life when before the update a 100% charge at 4am would last easily until Midnight with moderate use.
What are my options? I'm attaching a screenshot of Wakelock detector if that helps. I haven't had any interest in rooting my phone and running a different ROM but if that's my only choice, I've done it with other phones. Would anyone be able to recommend a good ROM that's similar to stock Android and won't completely wreck my battery life?
so, I can't attach my screen shot because this is a new account. But for a rundown:

Ever thought about resetting/wiping your Phone?
Or re-flash the 4.3 Firmware with Odin and then wipe your Phone and everything should be ok.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I have done a reset twice. I will look into trying to reflash 4.3 with Odin, thank you.

if you are willing to reflash 4.3....why not go the extra mile, and upgrade to 4.4.....kitkat kernel has sorted out ALL battery life issues i had prior to updating....for example on custom 4.3 kernel, with moderate use...i got almost 30+ hrs.....now...using stock 4.4.2, same usage......over 48 hrs....
note, i upgraded using the nordic release...the first kitkat ever to pop up on sammy's website

Is it possible to use that release with T-Mobile's SGH-T889?
Well I just had a look on Sammobiles website and 4.4.2 still isn't official for this device so that means, 4.3 is still the lastest.
BTW. Android 4.3 has brilliant battery life, recently I got 7h of screen time which is awesome
nope

im afraid not, you might have to use a custom rom on your model in order to get 4.4......but if you wish to remain stock, i guess sammy will provide you with the latest

Thanks for the info! I guess I'll be looking into reflashing 4.3 for now. The HD custom rom looks awfully appealing, though...
it's worth it

4.3 custom scene is filled with awesome roms dude, if you want the same bootloader, or stuff ......i recomend any touchwiz based ones you might find....(if you still want the s-pen), some tweaked out kernel for extreme battery life and you're set for another year.....or until the N4 drops onto the stage :highfive:
or go 4.4.4 aosp...
That's y I stay away from tmobile and orange.

[Q] ROMs that enhance battery performance?

I recently bought a used Sprint Galaxy S3, it is the SPH-L710 model.
It works great, I like it, I got it rooted with no problem, and got CWM flashed to it and I'm getting ready to flash a ROM.
I've been searching forums and sites for about 2 days for the ROM I want to use.
I'm mainly looking for something that enhances my battery performance, the reason for this is when I first got the phone, I updated it to the 4.4.2 KitKat when I first turned the phone on and the battery life was terrible, like I would charge it to 100% and use it browsing the web for about 10 mins and lose sometimes upwards of 10+% within that 10 minutes.
I searched around and found 2 Apps that I am using right now, one is a battery doctor type thing, the other is an app called Battery Saver (root) it changes some stuff and is supposed to make battery life better, since I have started using these 2 apps my battery life has increased, but it still seems to drain a little fast. So I would like to try and find a ROM that perhaps has tweaked the battery life.
Does anyone have any opinions on battery life for any of the ROMs here that would work for my device, like perhaps which one that you have tried that extended your battery life? I know I could just try them myself, but I am hoping to save a bit of time and see if anyone has some input.
Also another quick question, is there a way to test my battery and see if its just bad? A friend mentioned that the battery could have just gone bad so I'd like to check that if possible.
A. S3s aren't known for their amazing battery life. My battery does not go very far either, talking on the phone, which I do a lot for work, gobbles up the battery immensely. (Like 100% to 80% in 30 minutes.) Web browsing is another battery hog.
B. ROMs are only going to do so much as far as extending your battery life. Just bear in mind -- the lighter the ROM, the less battery it'll likely consume.
You'll do more to save battery by flashing a custom kernel on top of a light ROM that'll allow you undervolt/underclock. But, you want to make sure you flash the correct kernel to the correct ROM base (e.g. Touchwiz kernel for Touchwiz ROMs, AOSP/CM based kernels for AOSP/CM based ROMs).
I personally use the DKP kernel found here in the S3 original development thread.
Be careful w/ underclocking and especially undervolting, as this can cause the phone to freeze up. It's also important to choose a governor that has a nice balance between performance and power savings. (I like the freelunch governor.)
Hope this helps.

Thanks!
That gives me an idea of what I should start looking for, and I'll check out the DKP kernel as well..
I just thought of another question I had, maybe you can help me with it too.
Since I'm running Android 4.4.2 on my device, would I need to find a 4.4.2 ROM to flash?
For instance could I use a 4.3.1 ROM on my 4.4.2 device?

It doesn't matter which Android version you decide to go with. Just avoid two things:
1. Do not flash an older bootloader than the one you are currently on (e.g. If you are currently on ND8, do not flash any older bootloaders like MK5 or MD4).
2. Do not flash any modems older than the one you're currently on. Your modem version can be found in Settings -->About Phone --> and the last three letter/number combination under "Baseband Version". Hint: The baseband version also tells you which bootloader/ROM you're on.
Doing either of these, will trip Samsung's KNOX security feature, tripping the kill-fuse, and suddenly, you'll have yourself a nice hard brick.
I know that probably sounds intimidating, but I assure you if you avoid those two things, you can flash any D2LTE ROM you please. (D2LTE ROMs will work with the Sprint S3.)
idk man the batter life of my S3 lasts 2 days where my Infuse 4g would last less then one with a new battery.....so by far the best battery life I've had in a while

Wew! Thanks for that info, you may have saved me from a terrible mistake lol.
One of the ROMs I was looking at was using the MD4 bootloader, so that would have been a no-no xD
Thanks a lot for all your help, I learned a few things from it, epspecially about the bootloaders and modems having to match, I had no idea about that. Now that I know that, it opens up a few more possibilities for ROMs I can use!

Fun fact: The bootloaders and modems didn't always have to match.
Samsung wanted to be able to market their devices to business entities, and in order to do that, they developed the KNOX security feature.
Once it's on your phone, it's not coming off. It matters to corporate security policy people, because they want devices that aren't going to be compromised if someone tampers with them.
And, as you can see, the wrong kind of tampering makes the phone completely unusable and unrecoverable.

Right now I'm sort of leaning towards LiquidSmooth, Quantam4, or Tribute ROM, still sort of looking around though.
If you don't mind me asking @Higgs_Boson, which ROM are you using?
Also, to the other poster, my mothers GS3 is the same way, hers will last upwards of a day and a half, then again she doesn;t use hers for much, while I'm on mine like a computer lol.

Right now, I'm on CM11.
I usually switch between two that are my favorites:
CyanogenMod or Paranoid Android.
If you want an all-in-one, there is always PAC-ROM, which includes Paranoid Android, AOKP, and CM all under the same roof. (But then, we get back to that thing about light ROMs.)

personally yes after i replace the system UI with the Stock ND8/NDC one and same with the TW Framework and TWframework-res.apk and use the Stockish theme for it.....i like the stock look what can i say but im using xposed at the same time for little things here and there but if you don't want to replace somethings and want it to work 100% use the PCB theme that it comes with.......but either way its pretty smooth and fast and the battery lasts for 2 days with some gaming and listening to music with viper4android installed and making calls and texting the one thing that i would say drains my battery is watching videos but you'll be satisfied
Wow you arent joking. This is one of the best ive seen lately. Nice.

Wicked X, Tribute and Conquest Singularity are all 3 very good ROMs with pretty fair battery life. As stated, Kernal Settings do make a world of difference! I'm on Singularity with latest KT747 Kernal and love it :]
Cm 11 or paranoid
