rom flashing and battery - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

quick question
i know its recommended to flash a rom at 100% for the best battery, but is it just the same to flash it at lets say 30%, fully charge it, then just wipe the battery stats?
thanks guys

What ROM you trying to flash....I don't and still get phenomenal battery

i wanna try TDJ's ICS rom, i haven't tried the new leaked base yet but a lot of people are saying TDJ's rom is daily driver status so i might hop on.
i think somewhere i read TDJ himself say the battery life is on par with GB

I agree,
Ive flashed with my battery from 30-50% on a number of occasions and still got great battery life.

it doesn't really matter what your battery is at when you flash something (as long as there's enough to get you through your first boot anyway). probably don't get a good indication on a new rom's battery until at least the 2nd or 3rd day. and wiping battery stats has been repeatly reported as a waste of time though. doesn't hurt anything but doesn't accomplish anything either.

Kernel suggestions?

Here is the situation, I appreciate any feedback. I'm running Remptive Revolution with the Distinction 1.49 theme on it, I flashed over to one of ziggy's kernels not too long ago and it seems like it rips my battery up. I usually have it around 1.15 on demand in SetCPU with profiles set to 384max when screen off, and 768 max when below 50% and 691 below 30%. It seems like the original ROM kernel was wicked fast but I didn't get a good chance to test out the battery life. I've tried a few different kernels and I'm considering going back to one of the Hydra kernels, I feel like they haven't done me wrong. I'm just looking for a good solid kernel that will give me solid battery and good performance, I know I won't get the best of both worlds, but I'd prefer good battery life. Also, pro/cons/purpose of wiping battery stats? I can't seem to find any info about it.
I really like chads kernels. His newest one an oc to 1.113 and is faster then any other kernel ive ever used with really good battery life. (ive only tested the battery life at stock speeds.) And the purpose of wiping battery stats is to let your phone recalibrate the battery so basically you can get the best battery life. ( i believe at least)

Installing now. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have an update later on and we'll see where we stand.
The reason I'm hesitant to use KingKlicks is because of a constant bootloop I ran into. And Ziggy was just cool, got some really good quadrant scores on it, but it just ran through battery like nothing. Anyway, thanks again! I'm excited!
I've been using Heyitslou new kernel and battery life is the best since I've owned this phone. I'm also using his Redemptive Revolution ROM.

If you use aosp roms then I would go with invisiblek #17. It's the best that I've found thus far.

Best kernel i have used by far for cm6
I wiped battery stats a few days ago in recovery, and literally every app on my phone started force closing. I had to restore from a backup, and when I did, every app acted like it was the first time I ever loaded it. Had to set up EVERYTHING again. Do as you will, but the ONLY thing I did to cause that garbage was wipe my battery stats. I'd love better battery life too, but I think the software should be capable of relearning your power cycle of a battery if you replace the battery. Can't stay one way forever.. or at least it shouldn't.
does anyone know where I can download KXK #3 or one of his other kernels? I have tried to find them on this site and the ROM manager. Even google's top results are just sending me to theads about the kernels but none have links to the kernel itself. I am going to try using it to get my battery life extended since I really don't mess with my DINC much besides angry birds (addict for life).
Thanks,
JrdnThms
There is a kernel thread floating around here somewhere it has them. I'm on my phone so I can't link but its called the official kernel thread I believe

CM7 Battery Life?

I just root my phone last night and my phone is running at 33° and my battery is geting handed a new one.
Does anyone know if flashing a new.kernel or any tips to conserve my battery?
Any help would be awesome.
Well a new kernel COULD help your battery life, but you'd have to check the specs of the kernel, as some are for performance, others battery life, and ect. But be sure to see if its compatible, and if you find no data on it always make a backup before testing it!
Edit: In addition to a new kernel, turning off your mobile data [3G] when you're not using is always a big battery saver.
From my personal experience, flashing a different kernel like crack. Lol! but most do indeed improve battery life. I have 2-3 kernels in mind that you could use, how ever i use my wifi tether. So i had to go with a kernel that gives my battery life and doesn't affect my wifi, which the other kernels did effect my wifi.
So if you use your wifi tether, and still want to save on some battery life. Try this kernel.
[Netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-sbc-nohavs-suv-universal-singed]
If you don't use wifi tether, then go with these.
[sbc-bcnice-stable-v7]
[sbc-bcnice-stable-v8]
[Reminder Note]
It's really up to you if you want to use these, I'm not telling you to do it. Just offering some ideas to help you brain storm on things.. And yes I have flashed the bottom two kernels on cm7 rom, but my cm7 3g was pretty weak, and i do enjoy 4g at work, so i jumped to a different rom.
Got the links, but haven't posted enough to add links in my post yet.

Just saying, I would recommend staying with the CM7 kernel till a stable release since it's still a beta you never know what will happen!
Ummm....yeah. I flashed kernals to cm7 and lost my camera. Can't get it back either. Been trying everything.

Awesome guys I will most definitely look into it. Because I love cm7 and do not want to get rid of it.

Oh and I do have all of the little things down. I have taskpanel, oc widget at 245-576, disabling data, all of it. It just runs really hot and my phones almost dead lol. So hopefully a kernel fixes it.
CM7 is great for battery overall, and Savaged-Zen kernel makes it even better.
I'm averaging double the battery life from stock Sense.
See my sig for links.

Good job replying to a months-old dead thread.

What rom and kernel for best battery

Right now using caulkin 1.5a and stock kernel 1.1. No Los but battery drops so quickly it seems.
Caulkin 1.5a Bare Rom and Rogue Renegade kernel is giving me awesome battery life.
Stock kernel no Los and best bar life but rogue outlaw comes close.

This for me. Just make sure to calibrate.
Calkulin's and StarBurst are both nice ROMs, but StarBurst has been the most stable with best battery life for me.
Funny, this combination drained my battery quickly until I replaced Rogue with stock--now battery life is great. Rogue had worked fine before the most recent Calkulin update. If you have problems I think you need to try the available options or reflash.
Before switching to a different ROM or Kernel, I always go back to stock to make sure I have a clean starting point. This is so easy now this is available > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
I am not saying this will solve every issue but its worked well for me. There really is no reason why a certain config should work fine on one device but not another.

I love starburst but battery life winner goes to Calks rom. V1.5a can last me all day with 50% left.

that is now incorporated into my flashing routine as well. Takes about an additional 15 minutes but well worth it in my eyes.

Yeah caulk use to be awesome. Now I'm getting bad battery drain. About 3% since turning my screen on navigating to this Page and replying back.
Going to flash stock tonight and reflash.
I can easily get a full day of heavy use when off charger with calk's rom. Which is nice to know. I might just pick up another battery to have just in case but coming from the Evo this phone is light years ahead with battery. I suggest flashing stock tar and pit file as part of your "wiping" routine.

Yeah I use to also but last two days its been relatively bad. Definitely flashing stock.
What about this one on battery life as well as signal extra...

I UV the cpu and GPU on stock EG31 kernel
after flashing starburst 1.9.5 battery life was great but then getting worse
I had great battery life after flashing starburst ROM 1.9.5 and calibrating, but after a couple of weeks battery life has become 50% worse. What could be the cause of something like this when my settings haven't been changed?
running lostKernelExp+
i installed badass battery monitor and it appears that the application "kernel" is responsible for 30% of my battery life. when battery monitor shows "kernel" is it referring to lostKernelExp+?

[Q][kernal] What's a good one?

I have stock rooted, I love the phone and didn't want to flash a ROM so soon but I was wondering, what's a good kernal thats better than stock, that increases battery while not affecting the speed negatively, I currently get about 10-12hrs on my battery as is
Search doesn't work that well for me on mobile, so sorry if previously asked although I did scan the threads but just wanted to see how you guys are doing with your current kernals

Try tdj's dark side kernel. Very smooth and great battery life. Plus you can overclock and under volt.

i think there's only about 4-5 options out there... but each phone's hardware is different so each kernel will be different.
For example, my phone works really well with faux and darkside, but i get quite a bit of drain from eugene's kernel (yes I do configure my clock speed and voltages) people say synergy has great battery life and is smooth, however, my phone says different. it lagged more than the 3 mentioned and battery life was equivalent. There is also the bullet kernel... i haven't played with that... not sure if im missing any other kernels... but yeah i suggest giving the first three a try first as they are currently being supported.
reminder, you should let your phone go through at least 2 charges before comparing kernel's battery life etc... and with our phone.. thats 2 days lol
Pretty much any of the kernels on the first page will give you better than stock battery life. Faux, synergy and the dark side kernel are the three most popular kernels amongst Devs so that must mean something.

To be honest, i only ran stock for a few hours. Ive been running a custom rom since day 1. But I believe it would be better then stock because TDJ has undervolted the kernel slightly.
I'm using the darkside right now and so far so good
Swyped from my Sgs2 T989
I've tried most of the popular kernels and the best battery life I've observed has been with Synergy... hands down gives me the best standby battery life.
But what I've noticed that gives me even better battery life is just turning off mobile data when I don't need it (in class, during meetings)... which also turns off the background syncing.
But in the end, it's all up to you how crazy you want to get with your battery management.

Which has better battery life AOKP ics Rom or CM9 alpha 3?

I been on cm9 alpha 3 and the battery drains somewhat fast then when i used alpha 2 as a daily driver.. But i want to try out AOKP latest rom, but I know it's stable i just want to know about the battery life??
Epic touch phone of xXHELLBoy91Xx
They both have pretty junky battery life. I've ran them both but I decided to stick to AOKP because it has more features that I like. I got around the same battery life on CM9 that I did with AOKP, It was too close to tell the difference.
Just a sample from me. Day 2 on AOKP I got 15 hours battery time, 3.5 hours of screen on time and ended with about 35% battery.
Only a couple quick phone calls, not much to brag about time wise though.
I'm flashing aokp more to try it out, it seems fairly same as alpha3 battery wise but customization is awesome

Both are pathways to brickville. Take your chances but Calkins FD02. HAS GREAT BATTERY LIFE way less likely to brick.

Being misinformed and lack of reading is the pathway to brickville. Flashing, restoring, and wiping in ics based recovery is the cause, not cm9 or any aosp rom.
not hard to flash any of them especially if u purchase mobile Odin and read...
