Hi everyone/ developers/ users of xda developers and wfs owners. I'm quite new to xda developers ( as in ten minutes new) although I've been following things quite religious for a few months now.
SO, I was wondering whether anyone could tell me whether there are any roms with true hardware acceleration?
At the moment I have modpunks Ice cream sandwich/cm9 alpha 1 on my wildfire s (gsm) and I'm loving it alot, although I know he said he was releasing kernal 3.0 soon. Does kernal 3.0 have better hwa then? My second question is about forcing GPU rendering in applications ( on ICS ). I've searched and haven't been able to really find out much about it, by principal it should be good, especially since the adreno graphics drivers release for arm6, but I don't really know whether to use it or not.
I know this is a crapload of stuff to read but I'm really interest in custom roms and want to get involved, I appreciate any answers or discussion even

Hi friends,
I wonder what we will get with ICS. I think it will let us to have much more free ram at startup. Maybe smoother than virtuous affinity... So more what? I've read it would be more useful than sense based roms. I really can't wait to have an ICS rom which is really smooth; but i don't know why and for what i wait
Why would it give us more free RAM ? Surely it will be less, e.g. hardware acceleration uses more RAM.

in my opinion, base android roms (no sense) don't use much ram. somebody said we will not need sense with ICS. So it won't use much ram. as i said, these are my opinions... BTW doesn't sense based roms have hardware acceleration? is there any ram usage difference between gingerbread and ICS roms?
ICS is the newest operating system for android, which is definately alot to look forward to (eg. gingerbread made froyo absolete). But you're comparing it to a sense rom, which is a completely different thing. I think the best way for you to learn what you want to know is to google it.
yes but icsi with sense is impossible in G2 because have poor ram for this dual
I have found this page http://chromloop.com/2011/11/ice-cream-sandwich-first-boot-on-motorola-defy-aosp/
It says ics uses about the same ram with gingerbread. So it should be possible to have ics rom with sense. But i don't think that i need it, i only want ics based cyanogen 9. Thus it will be fast i though. Am i wrong?

Well you can play around with the ICS port that's still in the works. You'll get a general idea of new things to come. I can't wait till we have a nice, fully functional rom. Don't think I'd even want anything from sense after that

i've been playing with the ics port rom ever since the alpha version. so far it's the greatest. can't imagine (wait) what it will feel after a stable release
Have they implemented Hardware accelerated UI in the Desire S port?
It seems rather slow.
Of course it's in beta, so it's all cool and I don't expect a port to perform well in the long run either way. But I'm just curious since "3D acceleration" is kinda vague. Is it only for game apps and some fancy effects?
As far as I know hardware acceleration is fully working on the desire s port. I'm pretty sure, that most performance issues are simply due to the fact that it is a beta port of ics from another device.
Once we have a fully working aosp build or cm9, performance should be as good as expected.
I think you can get a good impression of ics without hw acceleration by trying out v 0.1 from andromadus, which redefines slow.
Ah I see. Thanks.
hello all! dev's any chance to see a rom with ics and the lastest sense from the Endeavor? thx in advance
Wrong forum. The Development forum is to show off your creations, not ask for something.

not only is this the wrong forum to ask for this, but we haven't even gotten a fully functional ICS rom yet.. It's going to take time, and ics sense is soo bogged down, even the phone it's released on (1ghz dual core, 1gb ram) lags, so I doubt it'll be pleasant.
So here is the situation.
We know our SE Xperia Plays are getting the major update to Ice Cream Sandwhich but Sony is doubting that it will be able to perform and deliver gaming performance like gingerbread does currently. This is because the Play has rather outdated hardware. But they are not looking outside the box. We have great developers here that have excellent skills for exaple DooMlord. These guys could help optimize ICS to give the graphic capabilitys Gingerbread does currently.
So my conclusion? We take the update and then all pull our wait to optimize it like we've done with gingerbread ( WE HAVE A 2GHZ OVERCLOCK)
Whats your view on this topic?
There are already custom ICS roms and kernels that work really well. Check the development section
I'm going to be a bit blunt here. Do you not know the word DEVELOPERS is in the website name? that's what his whole site was based upon. Taking sources and making them work for us so we can use our phones to the potential it was built.. So, in short. There is no situation.
What's up fellas?
I'm currently using Sony Ericsson Arc S and to be honest, I'm not happy with it.... I put my phone on sale and I got an offer. Someone wants to exchange his Desire HD to my Arc. The hardware is pretty identical, processor(Arc has 1.4GHz Snappy, but basically it's just factory clocked 1GHz one). Both are about the same price when new.
Does this phone have something really worth... Desiring?
DHD has a lot more roms than Arc, and it's something I like.
Thanks!

The DHD is an amazing phone with a lot of awesome, stable ROMs for it. Including ICS. But it's slowly becoming a legacy device. Many of the devs who used to make the best ROMs a few months back have now moved on to other devices. Mainly HTC One X and One S. In terms of Gingerbread ROM development, the DHD has reached a state where many of the GB ROMs available for it are in a very stable state, and there's not much to be done with them anymore in terms of bug fixes and new features. The DHD will receive one last round of development when the official ICS upgrade (announced by HTC) is released, which will help mainly to fix the camcorder in all the existing ICS ROMs by providing the required driver. Right now one ROM still going great in terms of development is IceColdSandwich by LorD ClockaN, which is a the best ICS ROM for the DHD.
I'm basically telling you the scene with DHD development right now, so that you can make up your mind better. If you can manage to get a newer generation device in the next few months, then I'd suggest you hold off this trade and get a new device once for all. But if you have no plans of getting a new device, then I'd say trade. The DHD is an awesome device with a very strong build quality and great performance (depending on ROM and kernel used). Feels very solid in the hand. Though it received dreadful battery life reviews when it was launched, that hasn't been a problem for me in a long time. I can get 1+ day with light use and 8 hours with very heavy use. The processor can be overclocked to 2 GHz too (if required) depending on the kernel used. I'd prefer it over the Arc S any day.

Aye, overclock the DHD to 2 Ghz if you wanna FRY your phone, or if your lucky....just reduce the life of it by 90%.
With the mentioned ICS build....yeah, go for it, but don't exprect to be able to take pictures, take videos or read Sim card contacts etc etc.
HTC Desire, for me, using NON-ICS Roms has been AWESOME. Solid build, feels quality, fast etc...if I had a choice i.e. money wasn't object....I'd get the HTC One X...but still keep my Desire HD as a 2nd/backup phone, coz it's sooooo awesome and reliable.
Matt
Yeah, the thing is that Arc has dozens of roms, but it its always slow. I don't know why... I've read a lit of people telling how great Dhd is, and I'm pretty sure it beats Arc. I don't know, they're about the same price, do there's not much to lose... I'll go for it!
Thanks for in fo guys. I'll trade my Arc to Dhd. I'm gonna buy newer phone later.

Alright, as we all saw in the last couple of days we got a new CM10 jb rom with minor fixable bugs. It's a step forward for our willy , but there's been a question bothering me and i hope most of you aswell: what are the actual highs and lows between a CM10 rom and especialy a CM7 JB styled rom (jellybread in our case) and also between CM10 and CM9 roms.
The actual question is: is it worth keeping CM10 as a daily rom with most of it's lags/delays knowing that there is something else to it than the simple "yo samsung user, i got CM10 on my willy too" ? Or we can use the CM7 jb styled or CM9 wich looks as good as the CM10 does but without the lagfest, the minor bugs (wich are not such a pain in the behind because the way i see it they should be fixed in about 1 week or so tops), and the excruciating pain I experienced when i was going through my settings, not changing anything, and it took my willy a good 6-8 seconds to show me the caller id after the ringtone started when my buddy called me.
Debate please and feel free to criticize my knowledge because i preety much started to dig deeper into android and willy since 1-2 weeks ago.
A really good question!
See there isnt much difference in terms of look between CM10 and jelly bean styled cm7 Roms.
There are a few good things about actual jelly bean like expanded/expandable notifications, better support for proxy connections etc.(We can get those kind of notifications in CMX as well )
Since,we dont have a gpu on our device, special features of ICS/JB like full hardware acceleration, butter project are pretty much useless for us.
Android has evolved to a great extent and has become much richer from times.Compare the looks of stock cm7 and now cm10,there's a huge difference. But its a good idea to have those rich looks with old speed and stability, without sacrificing a lot.
So if you ask me,I'll say cm7 roms will always win in the context of wildfire. You aren't sacrificing much being on gingerbread.
Yeah that's very true
CM9/CM10 are stable but somehow can't be bug free

I try many cm9 roms, all is good but our Willy lacks of Gpu support, and also some bugs can't be fixed. CM7 is the best for stability and performance, and also with all mods you can have any style you want (CM9-10 style, MUIU, etc).
My vote goes to CM7 based JB style roms!
(and sory for my bad English).
Yes that is true. Cm7 jb are best bet for our Willy. Can anybody remember that HTC never released any update for our wildfire based on 2.3 version. But it is due to cm based rom and the efforts of all the developers that we are still holding our Willy with us in the modernized android world where i think processing powers are touching new heights. As @Wasimk32 said we don't have a gpu so hardware acceleration lag is pretty much going to haunt us. So i personally thank all the people who work for wildfire to breathe life into it.
And to @klyon too for keeping 2.2 rempuzzle alive which still make me feel what had HTC forget to make froyo on wildfire a complete rom. But i am thankful to them all this lead to revolution for our wildfire.
